• Bash command substitution not working as expected

  I'd like to view the last few lines of a file, but I want the columns aligned. Basically, I want to disable wordwrap. This is straightforward with: tail $FILE | cut -c -80 But I'm trying to generalize my script for other users, and I'd like to cut to the actual terminal width, which I can get with: stty size | cut -d" " -f2 So I would imagine that I could just tail $FILE | cut -c -`stty size | cut -d" " -f2` but it doesn't work: stty: standard input: Invalid argument cut: invalid range with no endpoint: - Try `cut --help' for more information. (Same results with the 'new' $() expansion.) Now, if I echo it, it seems fine: echo cut -c -`stty size | cut -d" " -f2` cut -c -103 Am I just missing an escape char? Or is this somehow just not possible? Thanks.

Generally on Database servers, like Sql Server, backups can be easily taken and restored very easily as they do not occupy much space for medium range applications. On the other hand how can we take backup of streaming server? If the server fails, the there should be an alternative server / solution that should decrease downtime of the server. • After extending the User model in django, how do you create a ModelForm?

  I extended the User model in django to include several other variables, such as location, and employer. Now I'm trying to create a form that has the following fields: First name (from User) Last name (from User) Location (from UserProfile, which extends User via a foreign key) Employer (also from UserProfile) I have created a modelform: from django.forms import ModelForm from django.contrib import auth from alert.userHandling.models import UserProfile class ProfileForm(ModelForm): class Meta: # model = auth.models.User # this gives me the User fields model = UserProfile # this gives me the UserProfile fields So, my question is, how can I create a ModelForm that has access to all of the fields, whether they are from the User model or the UserProfile model? • Custom component which displays voice recognition button if available

  Hi evereyone, I'd like to create a custom component which supports voice recognition. It will primarily be an extended EditText which should show the microphone button for voice recognition if it is available. I wanted to to look at the search app-widget on the homescreen but I don't find it in the source. This is intended to use the voice recognition as some sort of dictation device, i.e. the user does not have to type but use his voice instead. So could anyone please point me in some direction? • msi netbook refuses to connect to home wireless network (windows xp)

  Hi - I'm trying to connect my girlfriend's MSI netbook to the wireless network in my house, and failing repeatedly. It's not a hardware issue, b/c it connects to other networks successfully, and, it's not a network issue, because I have another mac and linux laptops that have no problem detecting and connecting to the same network. When I open windows' network connections box, I can see the network available, and when I try to connect to it (using a password), I get a "network no longer in range.." error (the router is 2 ft away). This has been the case for the past 6 months, and I'm about to give up. I've reset the router, erased all saved network preferences and pretty much all I could think of short of re-installing XP. Any idea what else could be done? thanks.

• Munin "Available entropy" when using address space layout randomization

  Having just configured Munin for statistics logging on my gentoo server (hardened profile), I am noticing that my "Available entropy" is consitently in the 200-300 range. This seems way to low, so I checked it manually using the command $ cat /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail 3544 Odd. Consistently very low values in Munin and practically filled up when checking manually. After thinking about the problem for a while I came to the conclusion that the problem is probably that I'm using Adress Space Layout Randomization which is using the entropy when running commands/programs. Since Munin runs a whole slew of programs all the entropy is used up, and Munin then measures how much entropy there is, resulting in the low values. Does anyone have any experience with this? How can this be avoided?

  Dhcpd running on Linux gets a dhcp request over dhcrelay which is running on other remote machine. It seems (of course) is should also listen to external interface for replies. It appears it is not important where the packet destined to. dhrelay will forward it to internal net. HOWEVER, I have deleted route on dhcpd server to reach 172.16.17.x subnet. It again tries to send reply to 172.16.17.81. • What is a good custom MAC address? [closed]

  My new notebook has been dropping the WiFi connection infrequently. The reason was, that my PS3 had the same MAC address. I changed the MAC address of my notebook and the WiFi is now stable. At first I just reduced the address' last block by 1, which happened to be the MAC address of another device. I reduced it again and for now it's fine. In order to avoid conflicts in the future, is there an address range that is safe to use for custom/non-vendor MAC addresses?

  Hi there, I extended a ModelAdmin with a custom field "Download file", which is a link to a URL in my Django project, like: http://www.myproject.com/downloads/1 There, I want to serve a file which is stored in a S3-bucket. The files in the bucket are not public readable, and the user may not have direct access to it. Now I want to avoid that the file has to be loaded in the server memory (these are multi-gb-files) avoid to have temp files on the server The ideal solution would be to let django act as a proxy that streams S3-chunks directly to the user. I use boto, but did not find a possibility to stream the chunks. Any ideas? Thanks.

  So, I'd like to implement my own custom authorization system in MVC2. If I'd have to create a global class, where do I instantiate it? Can HttpContext be extended with my own additions and where do I do that? Should I use Authorization filters for rights validation or ActionFilters or do it within an action? Can ActionFilter pass any data to the action itself? Previously (in WebForms) I was using a Session object where I would put a serialized object containing essential user data (account id and a list of roles and rights) and I'd extend my own Page class.

  I have issues calculating the accurate size of a NSString displayed in a UITextField. My goal is to update the textfield frame size according to the string size programmatically (without using sizeToFit).   We need to be able to create a dBase database (.dbf file) containing numeric columns with specific width and precision. I seem to be able to set the precision but not the width. The following code shows my connection string and my command text. using (OleDbConnection oConnection = new OleDbConnection(String.Format("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source = {0};Extended Properties=dBase 5.0", msPath))) { .... oCommand.CommandText = "CREATE TABLE [Field] ([Id] Numeric (15, 3))"; oCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(); } This gives me a column Id,20,3 in the file. There must be a way to set the field width without resorting to editing the .dbf file manually? Has nobody else come across this before when creating shapefiles?

  I'm trying to reverse map a block of IP using PTR record to some special name so their usage can be easily reflected by a simple nslookup. For example, here's a nslookup result: # nslookup 172.17.201.101 Server: 10.253.33.1 Address: 10.253.33.1#53 101.201.17.172.in-addr.arpa name = for.internal.use.only. And I learned that I can add PTR record for a /24 block by using $GENERATE directive $GENERATE 0-254 $.201.17.172 PTR for.internal.use.only. So here's the question: Am I doing right exposing infomation of IP address by adding PTR record? Any better idea? If the question above is YES, then how to add PTR record for a /16 IP range? I know I can write 255 lines of $GENTERATE directive but any better solution?

  Is it possible to reconfigure one of the LAN ports on a WRT54GL (running Tomato firmware) to act as a second WAN port? I have the following networks: PPOE connection to ADSL modem (works fine on the normal WAN port) WiFi neighbourhood network (in 178.X.X.X range), via a Mikrotik routerboard which I'd like to put on the WAN side of the router. I'd then like to set up routing so than some traffic (172.X.X.X) is routed to the Mikrotik and the rest to the ADSL modem. p.s. for practical reasons, I can't use the Mikrotik as the firewall/router. Edit: It seems this can be done by editing iptables, can someone tell me exactly how?

  The problem: the computers [Xbox 360 and a Kubuntu 12.04.1 laptop] can't access Internet through a recently-installed desktopless Debian 6 laptop (which is wirelessly connected to a WLAN station) but addresses are successfully given by dnsmasq. The attempts: 1.1) /etc/dnsmaq.conf conffed according to http://wiki.debian.org/HowTo/dnsmasq: add lines interface=eth0 dhcp-range=192.168.0.50,192.168.0.150,255.255.255.0,12h 1.2) Follow http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/rhel-fedora-linux-internet-connection-sharing-howto/ and use their script to setup iptables. 2) Follow the Ubuntu Internet Gateway Method (iptables) at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Internet/ConnectionSharing recommended and which worked at Share internet in Linux. The Debian laptop was rebooted many times and between each attempt, with and without the script auto-executing via /etc/rc.local. While adding the iptables-restore command to that file I disabled the script.

Currently, here it is: ^[a-zA-Z\s/-]+ I'm using it to pull out medication names from a variety of formulation strings, for example: SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TRIMETHOPRIM 200-40 MG/5ML PO SUSP AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE 125 mg-31.25 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE AMOXICILLIN TRIHYDRATE 125 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE 125 mg-31.25 mg ORAL TABLET, CHEWABLE Amoxicillin 1000 MG / Clavulanate 62.5 MG Extended Release Tablet The resulting matches on these examples are: SULFAMETHOXAZOLE-TRIMETHOPRIM AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE AMOXICILLIN TRIHYDRATE AMOX TR/POTASSIUM CLAVULANATE Amoxicillin The first four are what I want, but on the fifth, I really need "Amoxicillin / Clavulanate". How would I pull out patterns like "Amoxicillin / Clavulanate" (in fifth row) while missing patterns like "MG/5 ML" (in the first row)?

I'm using a 2.6 kernel, and the program is being run on a dual-core processor with realtime priority. I'm trying to disable cache effects by declaring the memory arrays as volatile.   Does anyone know how to replace the IBM JSF Portlet Bridge with Myfaces Portlet Bridge 2.0? I want to set up a small local testing environment. Pluto + Tomcat + Myfaces Portlet Bridge. My Portlets are on JSF 1.1, but it should be possible to use JSF 1.2 Implementation!? Target is that a developed portlet(some old portlets use ibm jsf extended components) work on websphere portal and pluto without changes. I managed with maven profiles to get a small portlet with ibm jsf components to work in pluto, but i dont get it to work in websphere portal... Does anyone have experiences with that issue?

• Visualize compiler warnings

  I'm looking for a way to visualize compiler warnings and remarks, by annotating or otherwise showing which lines cause a report. This is much like a modern IDE like NetBeans or Eclipse already does, but I'd like to take output from several compilers (and other static code analysis tools) at once, and create one single annotation in order to get a better overview. The rationale is that we've seen some problems go completely undetected by, say, Visual Studio 2005, but accurately detected with a proprietary ARM compiler, and vice versa. Cross-referencing warnings could potentially locate problems better, but doing so completely manually is infeasible. Have you heard of such a tool? Could an open-source IDE like Eclipse be extended to use several compilers at once, or has it already been done?

• 80x86 16-bit asm: lea cx, [cx*8+cx] causes error on NASM (compiling .com file)

  Title says it all. The error NASM gives (dispite my working OS) is "invalid effective address". Now i've seen many examples of how to use LEA and i think i gots it right but yet my NASM dislikes it. I tried "lea cx, [cx+9]" and it worked; "lea cx, [bx+cx]" didn't. Now if i extended my registers to 32-bits (i.e. "lea ecx, [ecx*8+ecx]") everything would be well but i am restricted to use 16- and 8-bit registers only. Is here anyone so knoweledgeable who could explain me WHY my assembler doesn't let me use lea the way i supposed it should be used? Thanks.

• Why might SQL execute more quickly on SQL Server 2000 when NOT using a stored procedure?

  I could see nothing wrong with the execution plan. Besides, as I understand it, SQL Server 2000 extended many of the performance benefits of stored procedures to all SQL statements by recognising new T-SQL statements against T-SQL statements of existing execution plans (by retaining execution plans for all SQL statements in the procedure cache, not just stored procedure execution plans) It's a fairly straight forward SELECT statement with sensible table joins, no transactions included or linked servers being referenced within the query and WITH (NOLOCK) table hints applied. The stored procedure was created by dbo and the user has all the necessary permissions. So my question is this: What are the likely reasons for a query to take only a few seconds to run but then take several minutes when identical T-SQL is run via a stored procedure?
