I need to develop some small software for which I think using some professional suite like Visual Studio will be overkill. Most of the macro recording tools like AutoIt or AutoHotKey provide enough power to write decent application. Plus they are small and free. Which option will be good? Using one of these tools or using some other small/free compiler?

• Can output from OutputDebugString be viewed in VisualStudio's output window

  I am using C# and VS2010. When I use OutputDebugString to write debug information, should it show up in the output window? I can see the output from OutputDebugString in DebugView, but I thought I would see it in Visual Studio's Output window. I have looked under Tools-Options-Debugging-General and the output is NOT being redirected to the Immediate window. I have also looked under Tools-Options-Debugging-Output Window and all General Output Settings are set to "On". Finally, I have used the drop-down list in the Output window to specify that Debug messages should appear. If I change Tools-Options-Debugging-General to redirect the output to the Immediate window, the OutputDebugString messages do not appear in the immediate window. Ultimately, my intent is not to write a lot of debug output with OutputDebugString, rather I will use System.Diagnostics or NLog or something similar. I am just trying to find out, if I configure a logging platform to write to OutputDebugString, will the output be visible from within the debugger. Edit: I went back to my original program (not the simple test above) which uses TraceSources and TraceListeners configured via the app.config file. If I configure the trace sources to write to the System.Diagnostics.DefaultTraceListener (which is documented as writing to OutputDebugString), then the trace source output DOES go to the debug window. However, lines that write directly with OutputDebugString (such as in my simple example) DO NOT go to the debug window. Also, if I use a different TraceListener that writes to OutputDebugString (I got one from Ukadc.Diagnostics at codeplex), that output DOES NOT go to the debug window. • Is a successor for TeX/LaTeX in sight?

  TeX/LaTeX is great, I use it in many ways. Some of it's advantages are: it uses text files, this way the input-files can be diffed and many tools exist to work with text it is very flexible it has a stable layout: if I change something at the start of the document, it doesn't affect other things at the end of the document it has many extensions to reach different goals (a successor would start without extensions, but would have a good extension-system) you can use standard build control tools to support complicated documents (thanks dmckee) you can encapsulate solutions and copy&paste them to new documents or send them to others to learn from (thanks dmckee) But on the other hand some little things are not so good: it is hard to learn at the beginning it is complicated to control position of images a few things are a little counter-intuitive sometimes you have to type too much (begin{itemize} ... \end{itemize}) So, does there exist a successor/alternative to LaTeX or at least is some hot candidate for an alternative in development. A real successor/good alternative would keep the advantages and fix the disadvantages, or at least some of them.

• How to obtain the root of a tree without parsing the entire file?

  I'm making an xml parser to parse xml reports from different tools, and each tool generates different reports with different tags. For example: Arachni generates an xml report with <arachni_report></arachni_report> as tree root tag. nmap generates an xml report with <nmaprun></nmaprun> as tree root tag. I'm trying not to parse the entire file unless it's a valid report from any of the tools I want. First thing I thought to use was ElementTree, parse the entire xml file (supposing it contains valid xml), and then check based on the tree root if the report belongs to Arachni or nmap. I'm currently using cElementTree, and as far as I know getroot() is not an option here, but my goal is to make this parser to operate with recognized files only, without parsing unnecessary files. By the way, I'm Still learning about xml parsing, thanks in advance.

• Xaml not WPF

  I am interested in using Xaml with expression blend for creating user interfaces in an application. However, because of the limitations of the target architecture, I cannot use WPF or C#. So, what I am interested in is in any examples / existing projects or advice from anyone who has experiance of this technology on the use of Xaml in it's "Pure" form as a specification language not tied to WPF. Specific questions: 1) Is it possible to use Blend + Xaml without the WPF elements, or without C# backing classes? 2) Are there any other implementations of Xaml parsers etc. which use different architectures, and can they work with blend or similar tools. 3) Are there alternative editor / designer tools which can help in this situation? I am aware of the MyXaml and MycroXaml projects, and have found a lot of resources on the web about Xaml, but 99% of it relates directly to WPF. This is fine for understanding the concepts of Xaml, but doesn't help with the implimentation I need. Many thanks!

  I'm considering using postgreSQL 8.4x db on windows/Mac for development and linux for production. wondering what front-end tools are out there that are comparable to Toad (for Oracle) ? PostgreSQL comes with PgAdminIII. It's OK but I feel there might be something better than that. I prefer free or open source but if something is NOT too expensive(we are a NON-PROFIT), would not mind evaluating. minimal tools that I want 1) connection manager 2) Nice SQL Editor 3) Explain Plan 4) help with SQL embedding into various languages. 5) E-R diagrams would be good but this would not be a killer feature for me.   I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: When attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. • Opening a Silverlight project causes APPCRASH is Visual Studio 2008

  Hi guys I've got to add a Silverlight project to a solution for a deployment procedure (it's a pre-build dependency for the main project). I've installed Silverlight tools v3, silverlight itself and the silverlight sdk 3, and am using Visual Studio 2008 with ReSharper and the DevArt oracle database tools. Every time I go to open the relevant silverlight .csproj file VS crashes with the following error message: Problem Event Name: APPCRASH Application Name: devenv.exe Application Version: 9.0.30729.1 Application Timestamp: 488f2b50 Fault Module Name: StackHash_20af Fault Module Version: 6.0.6001.18000 Fault Module Timestamp: 4791a7a6 Exception Code: c0000374 Exception Offset: 000b015d This also happens if I try to create a new silverlight project from scratch. I'm a complete novice with programming and I'm trying to get started with this Ruby on Rails tutorial (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/ruby-on-rails-tutorial-book?version=3.2) I have been trying figure this out for about 7 hours now and since I don't have any hair left to pull out I'm turning to these hallowed pages. I have searched for solutions here again and again.   I have an old customer list of 4,000 businesses. I want to determine if the phone numbers associated with each listing are still working (and therefore the business is probably still open). I can put each number in whitepages.com and check them one by one... but want to automate the results. I have looked at their API and can't digest it. I can form the correct query URL, but trying things like cURL -O doesn't work. I have access to Mac tools, Unix tools, and could try various javascript stuff if anyone could point me in the right direction... would even pay. Help? Thx

• What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

  I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

• Design Code Outside of an IDE (C#)?

  Does anyone design code outside of an IDE? I think that code design is great and all but the only place I find myself actually design code (besides in my head) is in the IDE itself. I generally think about it a little before hand but when I go to type it out, it is always in the IDE; no UML or anything like that. Now I think having UML of your code is really good because you are able to see a lot more of the code on one screen however the issue I have is that once I type it in UML, I then have to type the actual code and that is just a big duplicate for me. For those who work with C# and design code outside of Visual Studio (or at least outside Visual Studio's text editor), what tools do you use? Do those tools allow you to convert your design to actual skeleton code? It is also possible to convert code to the design (when you update the code and need an updated UML diagram or whatnot)?

In our environment we use windows, c#, msbuild, cruisecontrol.net and subversion. We are currently using DocToHelp to create our help file, which is based on an msword document. I'm looking for some guidance on how to manage the end user documentation. What documentation tools should I use? Should any of the documentation tools be part of the build script? Should the output files from the documentation tool be stored in subversion? What type of help files would be best to use?

• What are the reasons to use SQL Server instead of MySQL with a complex .Net project?

  We currently have a 10 year old nasty, spaghetti-code-style SQL Server database that we are soon looking to pretty much re-write from scratch as part of a re-write to a large web application. (The existing application will serve as the functional requirements for the next incarnation of the app) The new version will be developed in .Net, so a large portion of the application stack will be based on Microsoft technologies (Visual Studio will be used IIS will be the application server). One of the developers on the project has raised the possibility of switching to MySQL instead of SQL Server in order to save on cost for both the licence of the DB server, as well as the tools to design and manipulate the DB (such as the wonderfully free MySQL Workbench). What are the various pros and cons of using SQL Server vs. MySQL as the database for a complex .Net project? Price is one factor we have identified, both in terms of the DB server licence as well as tools to manipulate the DB, but what other factors come into play?

• End User Ad-Hoc Reporting Tool: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio or Microsoft Access?

  Our centralized IT department has suggested two primary ad hoc query tools for our general user base of approximately 200 staff members: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008 (SSMS) Microsoft Access 2003 Environment The backend database is a read-only Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database. The schema is 400+ tables; allowing access to the raw data for our general staff would be a disaster. We will be building an "abstraction layer" over the raw data for our general staff to run ad hoc queries against. The abstraction layer will most likely contain a number of views. A number of users have basic knowledge in Microsoft Access; none have used SSMS. Which of the above tools (or alternative) would be best for a decidedly non-techie user base of approximately 200 people? What are the pros and cons of each? Also, the IT department has suggested teaching people T-SQL so they may use SSMS. Is this reasonable?

• Accurev SCM

  Does anyone use Accurev for Source Control Management? We are switching (eventually) from StarTeam to Accurev. My initial impression is that the GUI tool is severely lacking, however the underlying engine, and the branches as streams concept is incredible. The biggest difficulty we are facing is assessing our own DIY tools that interfaced with starteam, and either replacing them with DIY new tools, or finding and purchasing appropriate replacements. Additionally, is anyone using the AccuWork component for Issue management? Starteam had a very nice change request system, and AccuWork does not come close to matching it. We are evaluating either using Accuwork, or buying a 3rd party package such as JIRA. Opinions?

• How to model my database when using entity framework 4?

  Trying to wrap my head around the best approach in modelling a database when we are using Entity Framework 4 as the ORM layer. We are going to use asp.net mvc 2 for the application. Is it worth trying to model using the class diagram modeller that comes with Visual Studio 2010 where you graphically configure your models into the EDMX file and then generate out the database structure? I have run into a bunch of non trivial issues and for complex many to many mappings or multi primary key entities the answer is not that obvious even after poking around a while with the tools. I figure its easy at this point to give up and start modelling the DB using real, working DB modelling tools and then try to generate out the EDMX from the database, rather than trying to do the model first approach.

• Eclipse hangs when rebuilding after the addition of an external JAR file.

  I'm fairly new to Eclipse so if this is something simple I apologize, however when I attempt to add an external JAR file to my build path (specifically the "rt.jar" file which contains certain tools that I require) and then rebuild my project, Eclipse will hang at the end of the Build process. It'll get to 100% then just hang there using 100% of one of my CPU cores. At first I thought it may have been due to the relatively large size of the rt.jar file, but I tried using smaller JAR files and it still hung at 100%. Any help would be greatly appreciated! If there is something wrong with using the rt.jar file does anyone know of another JAR file that contains both tools for dealing with SOAP requests as well as XML/DOM manipulation? Thanks again!

• Faking user interaction on CMS

  I'm working with a CMS and need to import data to it using typical html forms. The data itself is in csv files with one page per row. Such is the CMS that importing directly to db isn't possible due to the complexity of the design. It's pretty important that i "fake" usual user interaction because the CMS does a lot of background work that's crucial for the import. Basically, for each row in the csv file, I need to copy a csv column to a html textfield, or select a checkbox, or click a certain button. One major issue is mapping the data in the csv to actions in the CMS. So if one column contains the string 'foobar' is really means "set the firstName dropdown widget to 'foobar'". Is there a tool to automate this? I´ve been looking at AutoHotKey, Selendium, Web-Harvester and many other tools but I'm not convinced they are the correct tools. The main problem is being able to interact with the html pages in a easy way.

• Scrolling RelativeLayout- white border over part of the content

  I have a fairly simply Fragment that adds a handful of colored ImageViews to a RelativeLayout. There are more images than can fit on screen, so I implemented some custom scrolling. However, When I scroll around, I see that there is an approximately 90dp white border overlapping part of the content right where the edges of the screen are before I scroll. It is obvious that the ImageViews are still being created and drawn properly, but they are being covered up. How do I get rid of this? I have tried: Changing both the RelativeLayout and FrameLayout to WRAP_CONTENT, FILL_PARENT, MATCH_PARENT, and a few combinations of those. Setting the padding and margins of both layouts to 0dp. • What the performance of Festival TTS vs FreeTTS on windows platforms?

  9 hours ago I had the wonderful idea to build up from scratch Festival TTS on Windows. In the meanwhile, and in less than 30 minutes, I build up the same source code on Linux, but only because tons of development tools were already installed :D Also this morning I downloaded FreeTTS. I started a simple testing project in less of 10 minutes, thanks to the Java power :D. Unfortunately FreeTTS does not provide immediate support for international mbrola languages, so this morning I thinked "it needs too much work"... Backing to Festival TTS on Windows, after many obstacles, and tons of wrong downloads, CYGWIN before, then "make" and other exotic C++ tools "forgotten" in the installation of CYGWIN, then Visual Studio 2008, then Windows Platform SDK 2008, but it lacks of System.h, so just now I am downloading Windows Server Platform SDK 2003, etc... So now, as I am yet here without having compiled a single line of damned C-- code, my question is: at least Festival TTS is a good choice on Windows for Java development?
