  • Using the vim split command from the command line to get 4 quater splits

    - by sixtyfootersdude
    I want to open four vim files on the command line: vim file1 file2 file3 But I would like each file to be opened in a separate split: vim -c "split file1" -c "split file2" -c "split file3" file4 (The above splits the screen horizontally 4 times) Ideally what I would like to do is split the screen into 4 squares like: |-------|-------| | | | | | | |-------|-------| | | | | | | |-------|-------| I know how to do this once vim is open but I am unable to do this from the command line (using vs). Any ideas? Everything I try ends up looking like this (or a different variation): |-------|-------| | | | |-------| | | | | |-------| | | | | | | | |-------|-------|

  • Unable to convert file to UTF-8

    - by antoniocs
I am on windows xp sp3 and I am trying to convert a file from ASCII to UTF-8. I use notepad++ to do this. I go to Encoding Convert to UTF-8 without BOM. I save the file, reopen and it is still on ASCII. I am using this file in a webpage and I need the file to be UTF-8, because I have strings in utf-8 and they am seeing little squares with ? on them.

  • Radeon HD4850 serious issues when using DirectX 10

    - by ricsmania
Hello, I have a problem with my video card. Whenever I run a DirectX 10 game, it works for a few seconds (10 or so) and then starts displaying nothing but big polygons. I have tested this with Crysis and Resident Evil 5, both have the same problems. The same games running under DirectX 9 work fine, except for some small black squares once in a while. I have the following specs: Asus P7P55D LE Intel Core i5 750 Sapphire Radeon HD4850 1GB 2x2GB Patriot Viper II Sector 5, DDR3 1600 MHz OCZ Stealth X Stream 500SXS 500W At first I thought it could be the video card overheating (it has stock cooling), but the game crashes even when it's running at 50 degrees C, and it's never been higher than 70. I also thought it could be the PSU, but as far as I know 500W is enough for this computer, especially because I haven't overclocked anything. My OS is Windows 7 X64 and I am using Catalyst 10.10, but I have also tried many older versions with no success. I don't think there is a problem with the card itself, or else it wouldn't run DirectX 9 games I believe. I have spent many hours searching for a solution but I couldn't, so any help is appreciated. Thank you. EDIT: I did some further investigation about the problem, and it seems taspeotis was right, it might be related to memory. I slightly underclocked the memory from 993 to 965 MHz and the problem went away completely. Both the black squares using DirectX 9 and the weird polygons using DirectX 10. I was using RE DirectX 10 Benchmark, as it consistently crashed around the same point, and now I can play the full benchmark with no artifacts at all. Unfortunately, the underclock has an obvious hit in performance. Although it's not critical, it's definitely noticeable. So, if the video memory test software showed no erros, but the card needs an underclock to work, what might be the problem? Temperature? Voltage? By the way, I couldn't find what the default voltage for this card is. And what is a good software to try and increase it? I tried Ati Tray Tools but it has a bug that increases the clock speed dramatically whenever I change something in the Overclock tab, so I'm afraid it might fry my card. Worst case scenario, if I don't find I solution I will try to slightly increase the GPU clock to compensate for the memory clock. Thank you again.

  • Multiple cable adapter setup not working - VGA to smartphone. All cables tested and work

    - by Christopher Rucinski
Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. Cable #5 in the picture below. However, both my coworker and I have been wanting to just display our phone screens on the projector. This I knew would require some extra work. What I have VGA cable to projector (cables go through the wall) For laptops HDMI to VGA cable For laptops MHL adapter For 11-pin microUSB phones microHDMI to VGA cable For ultrabooks 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter For older 5-pin microUSB phones) Equipment Projectors 1 projector with VGA and HDMI input (issue is coworkers forget to switch sources) 1 projector with VGA only input Laptops 2 new Samsung ultrabooks w/o VGA or HDMI support 1 ultrabook with VGA and HDMI support several other laptops with at least VGA support 1 tablet with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 new phone with 11-pin microUSB at least 1 old phone with 5-pin microUSB Tested VGA cable (#1) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to laptop Good VGA cable (#1) to microHDMI adapter (#5) to laptop Good Projector to HDMI cable (not shown) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Good VGA cable (#1) to HDMI adapter (#2) to MHL adapter (#3) to Galaxy Note 3 smartphone Does not work!! Extra Notes The 11-pin MHL adapter will not fit inside the 11-pin to 5-pin microUSB adapter so older phones can be displayed on the screen.

  • Linux centos trouble with egrep command in words folder

    - by seth
i need the commands to list these things for a class but for the life of me i cannot figure it out if anyone could offer any insight on how to get so specific with the egrep command or just answer the questions it would be highly appreciated some i have already figured out but if they look wrong any corrections may help too List all words that have the letter a followed immediately by the letter z. egrep {a,}{z,} words List all words that have the letter a followed sometime later by the letter z (there must be at least one letter in between). Egrep {a,?,z} words List all words that start with the letter a and end with the letter z. egrep "^a.*z$" words List all five letter words that start with the letter a and end with the letter z. List all words that start with two capital letters followed immediately by at least one lower case letter. List all words with two consecutive a’s or i’s or u’s. Use {2} to denote “two consecutive” and the pipe character, |, to denote “or”. egrep [a|i|o] {2} words List all words that contain a q where the q is not immediately followed by a u. For instance, queen should not be in your list but Iraqi should be. List all entries in the file that contain at least one non-letter.

  • NTDS Replication Warning (Event ID 2089)

    - by Chris_K
I have a simple little network with 3 AD servers in 2 sites. Site A has Win2k3 SP2 and Win2k SP4 servers, site B has a single Win2k3 SP2 server. All have been in place for at least 3 years now. Just last week I started getting Event 2089 "not backed up" warnings (example below) on both of the win2k3 servers. I understand what the message means, no need to send me links to the technet article explaining it. I'll improve my backups. What I'm more curious about is why did I just start getting this message now? Why haven't I been getting it for the past 3 years?!? Perhaps this is related: I recently decommissioned a few other sites and AD controllers (there used to be 3 more sites, each with their own controller). Don't worry, I did proper DCpromo exercises and made sure we didn't lose anything. But would shutting those down possibly be related to why I get this error now? This won't keep me awake at night but I am curious as to what changed... Event Type: Warning Event Source: NTDS Replication Event Category: Backup Event ID: 2089 Date: 3/28/2010 Time: 9:25:27 AM User: NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON Computer: RedactedName Description: This directory partition has not been backed up since at least the following number of days. Directory partition: DC=MyDomain,DC=com 'Backup latency interval' (days): 30 It is recommended that you take a backup as often as possible to recover from accidental loss of data. However if you haven't taken a backup since at least the 'backup latency interval' number of days, this message will be logged every day until a backup is taken. You can take a backup of any replica that holds this partition. By default the 'Backup latency interval' is set to half the 'Tombstone Lifetime Interval'. If you want to change the default 'Backup latency interval', you could do so by adding the following registry key. 'Backup latency interval' (days) registry key: System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NTDS\Parameters\Backup Latency Threshold (days) For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

  • finding the best network latency between two countries

    - by Yoav Aner
I know there are many tools to test for bandwidth and latency, but they all rely on having at least one host from which you can run those tests. I wonder whether there's an online source or some other way to guestimate the latency or speed between two countries (in general). For example, would a customer in Japan get lower latency if the server is located in Singapore or Australia? Is a user in India likely to get higher download speed from a server in the UK or in the US? Are there any online resources or some clever ways to answer those questions with a reasonable degree of accuracy? [UPDATE]: Thanks for the great suggestions from Raffael Luthiger. I didn't know about those looking glass servers. The submarine cable maps were also really cool to discover (Thanks to Jesper Mortensen). Also seems really wise if I could ask those network professional in the area for their experience, but obviously I don't have access to those. At least some of them are on SF :) However, I'm still a little unsure how to combine those resources to give me some measurements. This is the information I have: Two countries (A,B). I do have IP addresses of customers in country A (I can obtain those from the web server log files for example). Presumably I can find some looking glass servers in country B and run a trace to those IPs. What's the best measurements to use? Are there any scripts that help automate at least some of this process?

  • Disaster recovery backup of files/photos for personal use

    - by Renesis
I'm looking for the best method to store a backup of important files and 5+ years of digital photos that is safe from some type of fire/flood disaster in my home. I'm looking for: Affordable: Less than $100/yr or first-time cost. Reliable: At least a smaller chance of failing than there is of fire or flood Easy for initial backup and to add to, and at least semi-easy to recover. I recently purchased a small home safe for physical vitals. It was inexpensive, solid, and is fire/water safe. If I had a physical copy of the digital files, the safe would work fine for this, but I don't know what to store in it that adequately meets the requirements above. Hard drive - I read that the danger of it not spinning up makes a hard drive a bad choice for this type of storage, although it was my first thought and would definitely be the simplest choice - very easy to take out once a month and add files to. DVDs - Way too much of a hassle for both backup and restore. Tape - No idea on the affordability of this option Online - Given that I have at least 300GB already and ever-increasing megapixels means ever-bigger files, and my ISP upload is about 2Mb at the best, this just doesn't sound like a good option for me, but I could be convinced. Other - Have I missed something? Also, I'm already covered both for sync between computers (Dropbox) and a nightly backup of these files (External HDD). The problem with the nightly backup is obviously that it's always with the computer and in a disaster would be destroyed along with it. Is anyone else doing something similar? Is the HDD as poor of a choice as I read, or is it a feasible option? Maybe two to reduce the likelihood of failure?

  • organizing my music and my itunes

    - by Cawas
What can we do to organize our music? I've got over 20k items on my iTunes Library, at least 5k with ratings and play counts, apparently just 12k music files and I can't understand how this question have not been properly answered yet. Maybe there is no answer. I have too many duplicates, broken links, bad music, corrupted files... Well, a big mess with no tags! Probably there's no single software capable of just organizing everything, though I'd love one. Hopefully some time in the near future we all will be able to just sync the cloud of our automagically selected music to the newly created offline copy. But meanwhile... Please, do consider I've at least gave a shot (even while not a full test drive) to every single answer linked here already, plus a few more. I'm fine with using other software (mac too, please) to organize, but I'd need it to sync (retrieve and put back) at least iTunes ratings, because of iPhone and smart playlists. Not looking for iTunes replacement. I'm hoping to hear what you hardcore music organizers out there are using as your own solutions! :) I myself am using way too many tools, getting way too little done and end up going song by song.

  • Reliable router with good VPN and WAN Throughput [closed]

    - by Asdande
I have 2 cisco rv180 VPN router. These routers are giving me lots of problems. The webpages wont load correctly, slow response to load webpages plus other many issues. I have several cases pending with cisco. I give up on these routers. I would like to know if you guys can recommend me a reliable router for our 3 branches (NY - main, SC and FL). In NY- main office, we have 55 users. In SC branch, 6 users. In Florida we only have 1 (will grow soon). I need a router capable of support: 3 VPNs Site-to-Site connection VPN throughput of at least 40-50 Mbps WAN throughput at least 100 Mpbs and up PPTP Server for at least 5 PPTP users Web filtering - all users need access to internet Good Firewall Port forwarding for FTP Server - able to show the public IPs of FTP users (rv180 cannot do that, just shows me router's LAN interface IP, opened a case with cisco, now escaleted to level 2, still no answer or workaround) Dual WAN ports for balance or backup internet. Gigabit WAN/LAN ports Price between $400-$500 range. I was thinking on the TP-LINK TL-ER6120 or TL-ER6020 according to the review on smallnetbuilder.com http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-reviews/31983-tp-link-tl-er6020-safestream-gigabit-dual-wan-vpn-router-reviewed but I don't want to make another mistake as I did when I bought the cisco RV180. Thank you in advance,

  • Serious 64-bit laptop

    - by Daniel Gehriger
For the past couple of years, I have been using an IBM Thinkpad T60p for daily work (software development, desktop & embedded). I am extremely satisfied with this machine, due to its robustness. It also has a few features I depend on: a high resolution display: 15.0" TFT FlexView display with 1600x1200 (UXGA); excellent keyboard; decent graphics and CPU performance. Some of the software I develop benefits from larger amounts of RAM, and 3GB (Windows 7 32-bit) or 4GB (Windows 7 64-bit on T60p) are no longer sufficient. My customers run desktop computers with 20GB and more, and I need to have at least 8GB to at least be able to run reasonable test cases. So I'm shopping around for a new laptop, but I'm struggling to find anything that matches my requirements: must run Windows 7 64-bit Pro or higher; must support at least 8GB of RAM (more is better) high screen resolution! While I prefer 4:3 I can live with wide screen. But I really hope to find something with a vertical screen resolution similar to what I have now... portable, so < 16" but = 14" I realize that FlexView isn't available anymore, but I'd like to avoid a glossy screen if possible. decent (not more) graphics performance, ideally hybrid (I'm doing a lot of CAD, never games). good keyboard reasonable CPU -- but I'm still fine with my current Core 2 Duo, so that shouldn't be too complicated. The T60p fits all those requirements, except the 8GB of RAM. Can you help me find a current notebook that would match most of them? I don't mind changing brand. Thanks!

  • Backslash escaping in RegularExpressionValidator

    - by frogbot
I need to ensure that the input value contains at least one dot, so i use the following: <asp:RegularExpressionValidator runat="server" ControlToValidate="MyInput" Text="*" ErrorMessage="must contain at least one dot" ValidationExpression="\.+" /> And that doesn't work. By inspecting the page source i can see that ASP.NET escapes the backslash character so in java-script it looks like "\\.+". Why does it do so and how do i prevent RegularExpressionValidator from escaping it?

What is the least amount of code you can write to create, sort (ascending), and print a list of 100 random positive integers? By least amount of code I mean characters contained in the entire source file, so get to minifying. I'm interested in seeing the answers using any and all programming languages. Let's try to keep one answer per language, edit the previous to correct or simplify. If you can't edit, comment?

  • PHP mobile browser detection?

    - by TreyK
I'm in need of a way to detect mobile browsers server-side. I'd like a way that requires me to do little to set up and little to maintain, yet still provide me with accurate detection of (at the VERY least) Android, Mobile Safari and Blackberry browsers, along with alternatives like Opera. I'd like to have at least the majority of the mobile market covered, and I'd really prefer virtually all of the market if it doesn't take much.

  • A Taxonomy of Numerical Methods v1

    - by JoshReuben
Numerical Analysis – When, What, (but not how) Once you understand the Math & know C++, Numerical Methods are basically blocks of iterative & conditional math code. I found the real trick was seeing the forest for the trees – knowing which method to use for which situation. Its pretty easy to get lost in the details – so I’ve tried to organize these methods in a way that I can quickly look this up. I’ve included links to detailed explanations and to C++ code examples. I’ve tried to classify Numerical methods in the following broad categories: Solving Systems of Linear Equations Solving Non-Linear Equations Iteratively Interpolation Curve Fitting Optimization Numerical Differentiation & Integration Solving ODEs Boundary Problems Solving EigenValue problems Enjoy – I did ! Solving Systems of Linear Equations Overview Solve sets of algebraic equations with x unknowns The set is commonly in matrix form Gauss-Jordan Elimination http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss%E2%80%93Jordan_elimination C++: http://www.codekeep.net/snippets/623f1923-e03c-4636-8c92-c9dc7aa0d3c0.aspx Produces solution of the equations & the coefficient matrix Efficient, stable 2 steps: · Forward Elimination – matrix decomposition: reduce set to triangular form (0s below the diagonal) or row echelon form. If degenerate, then there is no solution · Backward Elimination –write the original matrix as the product of ints inverse matrix & its reduced row-echelon matrix à reduce set to row canonical form & use back-substitution to find the solution to the set Elementary ops for matrix decomposition: · Row multiplication · Row switching · Add multiples of rows to other rows Use pivoting to ensure rows are ordered for achieving triangular form LU Decomposition http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LU_decomposition C++: http://ganeshtiwaridotcomdotnp.blogspot.co.il/2009/12/c-c-code-lu-decomposition-for-solving.html Represent the matrix as a product of lower & upper triangular matrices A modified version of GJ Elimination Advantage – can easily apply forward & backward elimination to solve triangular matrices Techniques: · Doolittle Method – sets the L matrix diagonal to unity · Crout Method - sets the U matrix diagonal to unity Note: both the L & U matrices share the same unity diagonal & can be stored compactly in the same matrix Gauss-Seidel Iteration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gauss%E2%80%93Seidel_method C++: http://www.nr.com/forum/showthread.php?t=722 Transform the linear set of equations into a single equation & then use numerical integration (as integration formulas have Sums, it is implemented iteratively). an optimization of Gauss-Jacobi: 1.5 times faster, requires 0.25 iterations to achieve the same tolerance Solving Non-Linear Equations Iteratively find roots of polynomials – there may be 0, 1 or n solutions for an n order polynomial use iterative techniques Iterative methods · used when there are no known analytical techniques · Requires set functions to be continuous & differentiable · Requires an initial seed value – choice is critical to convergence à conduct multiple runs with different starting points & then select best result · Systematic - iterate until diminishing returns, tolerance or max iteration conditions are met · bracketing techniques will always yield convergent solutions, non-bracketing methods may fail to converge Incremental method if a nonlinear function has opposite signs at 2 ends of a small interval x1 & x2, then there is likely to be a solution in their interval – solutions are detected by evaluating a function over interval steps, for a change in sign, adjusting the step size dynamically. Evaluates the function & its derivative at each step. Can be extended to the Newton MutiRoot method for solving multiple roots Can be easily applied to an of n-coupled set of non-linear equations – conduct a Taylor Series expansion of a function, dropping terms of order n, rewrite as a Jacobian matrix of PDs & convert to simultaneous linear equations !!! Secant Method http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secant_method C++: http://forum.vcoderz.com/showthread.php?p=205230 Unlike N-R, can estimate first derivative from an initial interval (does not require root to be bracketed) instead of inputting it Since derivative is approximated, may converge slower. Is fast in practice as it does not have to evaluate the derivative at each step. Simple recursive method – given an initial value, calculate derivative deltas. Unstable & not very accurate (O(h) error) – not used in practice A first-order method - the local error (truncation error per step) is proportional to the square of the step size, and the global error (error at a given time) is proportional to the step size In evolving solution between data points xn & xn+1, only evaluates derivatives at beginning of interval xn à asymmetric at boundaries Higher order Runge Kutta http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runge%E2%80%93Kutta_methods C++: http://www.dreamincode.net/code/snippet1441.htm 2nd & 4th order RK - Introduces parameterized midpoints for more symmetric solutions à accuracy at higher computational cost Adaptive RK – RK-Fehlberg – estimate the truncation at each integration step & automatically adjust the step size to keep error within prescribed limits. • How to render axometric/isometric tiles that are a 2d array in logic, but inclined 45º visually?

    - by TheLima
I am making a tile-based strategy game which i plan to have 2.5D visuals in an axometric/isometric fashion. Right now i'm programming it's logic and rendering it as a literal 2-dimensional array (perfect squares, like an isometric top-down-view). In short, i have something like this: And i want to turn it to something like this: Do i keep going on the 2d-array logic? Is it all just a change in rendering behavior, as i'm thinking it is? or 2d-array is the wrong approach for my objective and I should change before it's too late? What are the ways of doing it, anyways? How should i apply the 2.5D axometric/isometric view (45º rotation to the side, and 45º rotation upwards)?

  • General approach to isometrics

    - by MrThys
I am currently discovering the world of isometrics, now I found out there are two approaches to creating the tilemap; Just create 2:1 ratio tile-images and draw those. Creating squares and transforming them to the 2:1 ratio. What is the general approach on developing an isometric game? Now I was wondering a few things; How do more known games like AOE1/2 do this? What are the pros/cons of both methods? Which method is preferred to be used in this day and age? Edit added more general question
