• Geolocation Blocking and SEO

  I'm in process to block a particular geolocation from accessing my site. But i am not sure if this is going to raise any flags on my website. Basically i'm getting lots of spam from particular state and there are some webmaster copying my content without any attribution or backlink. I feel that is enough and i wish to save my bandwidth on that state or geolocation. So my question is how to block particular geolocation ? Do you have any suggestions for php scripts that help block particular geolocation ? and another question: if there are any SEO disadvantages ?

• window.scrollBy only works in Firefox !? [closed]

  In my website I have this javascript code, adding a vertical offset when in the url a specific section of the page is specified (#): if (!!window.location.hash) window.scrollBy(0,-60); However this only works in Firefox... I'm pretty sure window.location.hash works in all browsers, that is, the symbol "sharp" is correctly detected in the url. Our first instinct is to summarily remove these results, but I'm concerned that this makes us little better than the oppressive regimes that censor the web. Where does one draw the line and how might one justify removing results that we deem offensive?

  I saw this bit of code on an old forum post: SSLRequire %{HTTP_HOST} =~ m"\.secure\.powweb\.com" And I was just wondering what the =~ and m" ... " meant. I've been searching online and in the Apache documentation for any mention of the equal-sign tilde operator, but I've found no mention of it. I know that some directives can take a tilde to use a regular expression, but I've never seen the m" ... " form used before. What exactly is that m" ... " for? Where else would you see this form?

  Hey all, I know there's been questions about this before, but mine is a little more specific. I work for a high traffic website and we want to start tracking our visitors better. Unfortunately, Google Analytics is not an option at the moment, so what I'm looking for is some alternatives, preferrably server-side (but not necessarily). We're currently running Urchin, but what I'm missing most there is the way you can set conversions in Analytics and then track (for example) which keywords convert better or which landing pages convert better. Also, A/B testing is something I really miss. Which analytics tools can be compared to analytics in terms of advanced segmentation, navigation summaries, A/B testing, etc?

  My concern is about SEO. Now let me explain the scenario. I am making a 3 languages website. The development is alright, but I was targeting local customers with one domain, and international (english version) with another. Eg: Local http://www.minhalojadesapatos.com.br (this is not the real website, just example!) Other http://www.myshoesstore.com.br Both domain point to exactly the same hosting and content, but when user comes through local domain, default language is set to portuguese, otherwise, default is english. Language handling on backend uses PHP Sessions and cookies, so with just a click users can change content language. How to avoid being SEO-penalised in this context? (yeah, I was hungry when focusing market for choosing two domains but the activity really needs that, it is a travel agency).

• Hosting and domain registrations for multiple clients

  I am finally getting regular work desiging, developing, and deploying websites for small businesses and individuals. So far the websites utilize single-user content management systems, so the websites create, as far as I know, minimal load on the shared servers. I have always required that each of my clients purchase annual shared hosting at Dreamhost. For domain registration, I ask that they register with Dreamhost, but some already have a registered domain elsewhere and this is fine with me. I do this so the billing issues are the client's responsibility, not mine. My question is: Since I can register unlimited domains and connect them to my one shared hosting account at Dreamhost, should I not be requiring clients to individually pay for shared hosting and a domain? Should I actually be paying for one hosting account and then hosting all of my client's websites on that account? As I said before, I currently have each client buy their own hosting, because I feel that, for example, if there is high traffic to their site, there would be less a chance of the site going down than if their site was hosted with many others on one account. I am famous for being long-winded, please let me know if I can clarify at all. Thanks!

• Need some help on tomcat URL mod_rewrite or mod_jk

  I am trying to remove the context name from the url of my server. Current URL - http://www.domainname.com/MyApp/ What I need to make is to make it avaialble at - www.domainname.com/ So it is only going to host one main app and that needs to be displayed when we open www.domainname.com/ on browser. I have already tried couple of things like below - RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/(Context/.*)$ RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ /Context/$1 [P,L] OR redirect permanent /MyApp/ abcd://domainname.com OR Using JKMount - JkMount /MyApp/* ajp13 JkMount /MyApp* ajp13 OR Deploy war file to ROOT of tomcat and make relevant chagnes in web and server.xml All of these aren't working and I keep getting a intenal error.   Is there a blog of preference for SEO, when it comes down to Drupal websites. I ask as WordPress seems to have the better plug-ins, though may not integrate as well. Any thoughts on this? I am asking from primarily a SEO perspective though also a design one as well. In other words, there are so many fabulous blog templates in WordPress and not sure if there are in Drupal. • Can someone sue me/take my domain?

  I have found a great domain that isn't in use, but the .com and .net domains are already taken. There's nothing on the domains though, it just says they are registered with Network Solutions and are under construction. My question is: If i buy the .org version of the domain, and the .com guys later start a company on that domain, can they sue me or make me change name because it is too similar to their .com domain? Should i avoid using domains that have already been registered but with a different ending?

  I was reading about this article - SEO preference for WWW or HTTP:// protocol redirection? Do www websites rank better than NON-www? I have same problem but I needed a help on this further. What about https:// How will this be treated? Is the redirect 301 sufficient to solve the problem? I have a SEO company that says if possible, i should not have redirect but I don't think this is visible? Does permanent redirect in any way have effect on SEO services if properly done?   I run Wordpress in Network mode, which means I can have multiple websites running off one installation of Wordpress. Each website runs as a subdomain. Wordpress handles this using .htaccess, and a wildcard subdomain pointing to the location of Wordpress, so there are no actual subdomains created in cPanel; just a wildcard subdomain in cPanel, ad Wordpress handles the rest. I want to 301 redirect http://one.example.com/portfolio to http://two.example.com/portfolio. If I only have 1 .htaccess file in the web root of example.com, how do I achieve this?

The following are the only ones I want to see separately: /page?do=login /page?do=backlinks /page?do=revisions /page?do=subscribe How do I collapse the unwanted modes to the page itself (/page)? 2) Some modes do something that should really not have a page attached, such as: /page1?do=sitemap /page2?do=sitemap How do I get these to show up without the page part (/?do=sitemap)? 3) What do I do with the search mode? • Website migration is not working for all computers

  We got 2 servers on same network, Server-A and Server-B. On Server-A (widows server 2003), we have IIS 5.2 and our website was hosted on it few month ago (about 7-8 months). We bought a new server, Server-B (Windows Server 2008) with IIS 7.5 and copied our old website on this new machine. On our router, we forward the port 80 to Server-B. The Server-A is still on because we need to access some old data by our old website. I would like to access it with it's internal Ip (192.168.1.xxx/mywebsite) On my Windows 7 computer, if I write www.example.com or example.com (without www.), I'm being redirected to Server-B and I can see our new interface. On some Windows Vista computer, example.com (without www.) redirect to Server-B, but if I write www.example.com, I'm still on Server-A. In our website code (on Server-B), we sometimes redirect with a "www." so this is causing some error because we are trying to access a webpage that exist on Server-B but not Server-A and because the www.example I compared 2 computers with Vista Home on them and Internet Options looks the same. I cannot figure why this is happening

• HTML5 Audio: Which formats? Ditch Ogg Vorbis in favor of Ogg Opus? Is MP3 still needed?

  I'm currently working on a website which has to stream audio files. Since bandwidth is always an issue, the file size should be as small as possible. I wonder what audio formats I should provide. MP3 - Most common format but low quality, I don't know if it's even required, since AAC is well supported by the browsers incapable of playing free codecs MP4 AAC - Nice quality / small filesize, supported by Safari / Mobile Devices / IE9 / Flash / Chrome A free codec - well, until recently, there only was Ogg Vorbis, but Ogg Opus is standardized now and it's really good! Questions: Is it time yet to use Opus instead if Vorbis? Firefox supports Opus since version 15, and Opera has support on its roadmap - I guess Chrome will follow in the future too. Do I still have to provide an MP3 file?

  Please help me to further understand custom channels. As Google says it is a way to map your ads, but I still have a few questions: Is it correct that a single custom channel per 1 ad is not very useful, since you can specify Ad blocks in the AdSense reports? I have multiple Ads in multiple custom channels. After this I created 1 custom channel and added all the ads to it. I made this channel targetable, so people can target through this channel on all ads at once. Is this a good way to do it? In other words, is it possible to have ads in multiple custom channels (without targeting, just for analyzing) and then create 1 custom channel with targeting that embraces all the (desired) ads? Why is it not possible for me to analyze custom channels (or ad blocks & formats) per site in the Adsense (reports). Or am I doing something wrong? If not, I have to create different custom channels per site to see how certain ads are doing on a site level?

• Usefulness of blogs for multi language ecommerce site

  I have a multi-language ecommerce site for which I am trying to improve its online marketing. There's currently a blog for the english shop, on a subdomain, which doesn't really get very much traffic. I'd been recommended to set up blogs for each of the different language shops and try to generate traffic to each of the blogs. I'm wondering if this is really worth the effort and cost (blog devt costs and ongoing translations required). Does anyone have any experience/advice on this at all? Perhaps where they've used this approach successfully or otherwise?

• Getting rank for keywords that I don't want to appear on my website [duplicate]

One of them is what I consider correct and thus it is what I want to appear on my website. The other name is incorrect for me, so I would like to avoid it. But I know that many people will search my product using the "bad" name. How could I get the "bad" name indexed for my site on search engines even if nobody can read it there? Of course, I want to do it "legally" so that no engine will ban my site considering it as cloaking, black hat SEO, etc... EDIT: Having that "bad" name on my backlinks is not an option. For example I would perceive user reviews connecting my site to that word as a negative point. Maybe having my site as a search result for that word could be negative as well, but I think it is worth it.

• Ad networks that will serve via HTTPS?

  I've built a website with 160K page views per month that serves every page over HTTPS. The recent FireSheep news will probably increase the adoption of "HTTPS everywhere" but it's been very hard to find ad networks and affiliates that will serve their content via HTTPS. I don't want to use these because I don't want my visitors to get "broken security" notification from their browsers (and of course, relevant ads would be a leak of private information). I'm tired of spending a ton of time signing up with ad networks and affiliates only to find out down the road that they don't support HTTPS (e.g. AdSense). Can anyone suggest any options or provide a pointer to a list of these somewhere?

• Dynamically rewrite URLs upon the user's selection - is it possible?

  In my PHP based web application, there's a form that generates a URL according to the user's selection. The form has 7 different fields, each one of them affects the final URL, none of them is mandatory. The final URL can be: /field1/user_setting_of_field1/field3/user_setting_of_field3/field6/user_setting_of_field6/ or just: /field4/user_setting_of_field4 these URLs should be rewritten to- /results.php?field1=user_setting_of_field1&field3=user_setting_of_field3&field6=user_setting_of_field6 and: /results.php?field4=user_setting_of_field4 Is it possible to create a single rewrite rule that will cover these variations? I'd hate to create different rewrite rule for every possible scenario, it'll take forever... I'm currently developing the app on a Windows machine with IIS 7.5, but will eventually deploy it to an Apache server. Is it possible in both? I currently need to solve it for the IIS environment, and later on for Apache.

• Facebook Like Button on Individual Pages

  There have been a few questions like this asked before but not in the same way. I want to put a Facebook Like or Share or Recommend button on all of my website pages. The site is somewhat like Yelp but for different topics. I am wondering which button to put there. Does it do any good to have individual pages "liked" and does it show anywhere besides on that page? I basically just want people to be able to click a button and have the page show up on their wall and their friend's feeds and I am not sure what the best plugin for that is.
