  • How do I make the launcher progress bar work with my application?

    - by Kevin Gurney
Background Research I am attempting to update the progress bar within the Unity launcher for a simple python/Gtk application created using Quickly called test; however, following the instructions in this video, I have not been able to successfully update the progress bar in the Unity launcher. In the Unity Integration video, Quickly was not used, so the way that the application was structured was slightly different, and the code used in the video does not seem to function properly without modification in a default Quickly ubuntu-application template application. Screenshots Here is a screenshot of the application icon as it is currently displayed in the Unity Launcher. Here is a screenshot of the kind of Unity launcher progress bar functionality that I would like (overlayed on mail icon: wiki.ubuntu.com). Code class TestWindow(Window): __gtype_name__ = "TestWindow" def finish_initializing(self, builder): # pylint: disable=E1002 """Set up the main window""" super(TestWindow, self).finish_initializing(builder) self.AboutDialog = AboutTestDialog self.PreferencesDialog = PreferencesTestDialog # Code for other initialization actions should be added here. self.add_launcher_integration() def add_launcher_integration(self): self.launcher = Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_id("test.destkop") self.launcher.set_property("progress", 0.75) self.launcher.set_property("progress_visible", True) Expected Behavior I would expect the above code to show a progress bar that is 75% full overlayed on the icon for the test application in the Unity Launcher, but the application only runs and displays no progress bar when the command quickly run is executed. Problem Investigation I believe that the problem is that I am not properly getting a reference to the application's main window, however, I am not sure how to properly fix this problem. I also believe that the line: self.launcher = Unity.LauncherEntry.get_for_desktop_id("test.destkop") may be another source of complication because Quickly creates .desktop.in files rather than ordinary .desktop files, so I am not sure if that might be causing issues as well. Perhaps, another source of the issue is that I do not entirely understand the difference between .desktop and .desktop.in files. Does it possibly make sense to make a copy of the test.desktop.in file and rename it test.desktop, and place it in /usr/share/applications in order for get_for_desktop_id("test,desktop") to reference the correct .desktop file? Related Research Links Although, I am still not clear on the difference between .desktop and .desktop.in files, I have done some research on .desktop files and I have come across a couple of links: Desktop Entry Files (library.gnome.org) Desktop File Installation Directory (askubuntu.com) Unity Launcher API (wiki.ubuntu.com) Desktop Files: putting your application in the desktop menus (developer.gnome.org) Desktop Menu Specification (standards.freedesktop.org)

  • Some Insight on the Field of Knowledge Representations

    - by picmate
I started following an MS in computer sciences after about two years of work for a software company. I worked primarily in data warehousing and business intelligence related software development during my previous occupation. There is a high chance for me to select a research in knowledge representations, ontologies and reasoning, as there are no other research available in any other interesting fields, such as pattern recognition and navigation. I developed an interest towards knowledge representation with what I learnt from the courses I am taking currently. But I do not have a deep understanding of it in terms of which areas such a field would have an impact in a real life scenario, and how it will help me when I am hunting for a job in the near future. Some thought about this would be greatly appreciated.

  • How can I prevent Google mistakenly offering to translate a page?

    - by DisgruntledGoat
Several of my site's pages are appearing in search results with [Translate this page] next to it. When I click that it takes me to Google Translate and translates my page "from Catalan to English". The pages are in English but have a couple of foreign words (actually Japanese romanisations, not Catalan) that appear to be tripping Google up. A few weeks ago I set the html tag to <html lang="en"> which from research appears to be the best method to specify the language of a document. Google has cached the pages with this attribute but it is still offering to translate. More research led me to a "notranslate" attribute which prevents translation entirely: <html lang="en" class="notranslate">. The problem now is users cannot translate from English to their desired language! Are there any other solutions that force Google to parse my site as English only?

  • How do I know if my game's average game session time is too small?

    - by you786
My game has only one life, and the aim is to stay alive as long as possible to get as many points as possible (it's an endless runner). Using Google Analytics I found that players are staying alive for an average of 17 seconds. I could easily increase or decrease this by manipulating acceleration or starting speed. The question is, should I change it at all? Is there any research or general ideas on the best playing time for a game like this? I would also like to know about any research about how long an ideal mobile game session should last.

  • Left Join Returning Extra Rows T-SQL?

    - by davemackey
I have the following query: select * from ACADEMIC a left join RESIDENCY r on a.PEOPLE_CODE_ID = r.PEOPLE_CODE_ID where a.ACADEMIC_TERM='Fall' and r.ACADEMIC_TERM='Fall' and a.ACADEMIC_SESSION='' and a.ACADEMIC_YEAR = (Select Year(GetDate())) and r.ACADEMIC_YEAR = (Select Year(GetDate())) and (CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'FR%' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'SO' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'JR' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'SR%') and r.RESIDENT_COMMUTER='R' For each person in the database it returns two rows with identical information. Yet, when I do the same query without the left join: select * from ACADEMIC a where a.ACADEMIC_TERM='Fall' and a.ACADEMIC_SESSION='' and a.ACADEMIC_YEAR = (Select Year(GetDate())) and (CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'FR%' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'SO' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'JR' OR a.CLASS_LEVEL LIKE 'SR%') ORDER BY PEOPLE_ID It returns only one row for each person. I'm doing a left join - why is it adding an extra row? Shouldn't it only do that if I add a right join?

  • Learning how to program real things.

    - by Sean
How would you guys recommend I actually learn to program real things? I mean, I know how to do basic academic things. I can implement a templated stack/queue/map/etc. data structure in C++ or Java or whatever. I can make a text-based hangman game or whatever. Etc etc. But how can I learn to program something real, something useful? I've done project Euler up to question 100 or so, and I feel like that's given me more mathematical maturity but not programming maturity. Should I buy a book and follow exercises, struggle through interesting projects, etc, ? In short, how did you guys transition from academic exercises to real, fun and/or useful programs?

  • Web Development Internship Interview Help

    - by Todd
Tomorrow morning I'm interviewing for a web development internship position and I'm seeking general advice pertaining to the questions that interviewers might ask, some questions I should ask them during the interview, and any general tips/suggestions that might help. They're looking for someone with knowledge mainly in HTML/CSS, Joomla, MySQL and PHP, all of which I have excluding Joomla (which I'm installing/doing as much research on as possible at the moment) and I was able to provide them a link to a site I'd been paid to build for a small business which they mentioned they were impressed with. I'd like to prepare myself for the interview as much as I possibly can but I'm wondering how much time I should spend rehashing elements of the languages they're looking for, or if it'd be a better use of my time to research their company and figure out how I'd respond to general questions. I feel that perhaps because I showed them a project I've completed that they'll know that I can grasp the technical side of what they're going for... but this is my first internship interview in this field so I'm not exactly sure what to expect. Thanks

  • The Challenges of Corporate Financial Reporting

    - by Di Seghposs
Many finance professionals face serious challenges in managing and reporting their company’s financial data, despite recent investments in financial reporting systems. Oracle and Accenture launched this research report to help finance professionals better understand the state of corporate financial reporting today, and why recent investments may have fallen short. The study reveals a key central issue: Organizations have been taking a piecemeal—rather than holistic—approach to investing. Without a vision and strategy that addresses process improvement, data integrity, and user adoption software, investments alone will not meet the needs or expectations of most organizations. The research found that the majority of finance teams in 12 countries—including the U.K., USA, France, Germany, Russia, and Spain—have made substantial investments in corporate financial management processes and systems over the last three years. However, many of these solutions, which were expected to improve close, reporting, and filing processes, are ineffective, resulting in a lack of visibility, quality, and confidence in financial data. • How to design brain games [on hold]

    - by samesky
I will wonder if anybody has some information about designing games for brain improvement. Recently lumosity is into a gear. I guess they research a lot or have experts. But is there any other research paper that is publicly available for designing the brain games ? Any equation or data that can help? Or what characteristics a brain game should have ? I am getting interested on this and search internet a lot, but unfortunately I could not find the core structure of it. It will really a helpful for me if somebody can give some information. Thank you.

  • Where can I train my game AI skills? (any upgoing competition?) [on hold]

    - by user1671710
There are 2 main options - building AI plugin for existing game or entering to some competition. Do you have some concrete tips? Is there any competition which will be soon open? From my research, competitions: http://aichallenge.org (last 2011) http://www.battlecode.org (January 2014) http://webdocs.cs.ualberta.ca/~cdavid/starcraftaicomp/index.shtml (August 2014) http://aibirds.org (maybe summer 2014) http://www.marioai.org (last 2012) http://www.ice.ci.ritsumei.ac.jp/~ftgaic/index.htm (last 2013) http://www.pacman-vs-ghosts.net (last 2012) http://ai-contest2013.gameloft.com/index/contest (last 2013) http://www.botprize.org/ (last 2012) And maybe more. These are from quick research. Obviously there were many competitions this year but it is difficult to catch it. Main question is: Do you have any information of any currently running AI competition?

  • Make your Silverlight applications Speak to you with Microsoft Translator

One of the announcements that happened during the MIX10 conference was the availability of the V2 of the Microsoft Translator API. This is the engine that powers the translation behind http://www.windowslivetranslator.com and some other Bing-related properties as well. A lot of research has gone into the engine from Microsoft Research and others. Language translation isnt an easy task especially taking into consideration cultural significance of words, etc. I have heard that the most challenging...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? We already have over 80 articles in several categories including Silverlight. Take a look: here.

  • Separating portion of website to its own server

    - by Brett
So my job is to take the homepage (or maybe I should say "homesite" because it encompasses a few interrelated pages) and drag this onto its own Apache server. The problem I'm having right now is being able to weed out jumbled/bundled files (such as folders of js, css, and other files that i cant even identify) and knowing what is necessary to keep the homesite running. I'm new to this stuff (I'm an intern) so feel free to ask questions if I'm leaving vital information out. What I'm asking of you guys here is basically any pointers or tips you may be able to give me in order to get the job done. I could use some advice from people with a little more experience in web development. btw: This question may appear as though I have not completed any prior research and that is, for the most part, true. But the problem is I really am not sure how to research this. If you guys could throw me some keywords to play with that would really be helpful. Thanks!
