• Why can't I index a SUBST'd drive in Windows7?

  I've got a SUBST for a folder to drive letter P: I have noticed that exploring these folders from P: is now INCREDIBLY slow, taking up to a minute sometimes to show files. I'm showing them as general files and not thumbnails, so it's not that. Looking at the original folder in explorer is lightning fast. I've checked the indexing options and indeed the folder where my files are stored is checked as indexed. I can see my P: drive in the list, but clicking on the checkbox won't do anything. It's not even checkable. Does anyone have any clues as to how I can fix this? (Running Windows 7 just to be clear).

• Do any filesystems support multiple forks / streams on directories?

  Apple's HFS+ supports multiple forks such as the old data and resource forks. NTFS supports alternate data streams. I believe some *nix filesystems also have some support for multiple file forks or streams. Given that directories (folders) are just a kind of file at the filesystem level, I'm wondering if any of the filesystems which support this feature support it for dirs as well as files? (Or indeed directories in the alternate forks / streams?) I'm mostly asking out of curiosity rather than wanting to use such a feature. But one use it would have would be additional metadata for directories, which seems to be the most common use for these streams for files currently.

• Failing RAM, or something else? [closed]

  I have a IBM Thinkpad T43, currently running Windows XP. Programs were crashing, XP was blue-screen-of-deathing, (more than usual) - it was basically unusable, but I couldn't get any informative error out of XP. I booted Ubuntu off a thumbdrive, which made it to the desktop, but as soon as I started to try to do anything, X segfaulted, along with several other services, followed quickly by kernel warnings and a kernel panic. I'm currently running Memtest86+ on this machine, which is spitting out numerous errors. (16k over 3 passes, and counting) The failing areas are numerous, and look something like this: 0001055da4 - XX.X MB, etc. The addresses that fail seem to cluster around 0-20 MB, 250MB, and, more rarely, 750MB, 1000MB, and 1200MB. However, a lot (but not all) of the failing addresses that I've seen end in XXXXXXX?da4 where the ? is a 1 or a 5. The machine has two sticks of RAM, one 512MB, one 1024 MB, the 512MB mapped to the lower addresses, the 1024 MB stick following. Is this indeed RAM failure, or should I consider other things before purchasing more RAM?

  I'm working on script meant to start/stop a set of services. For stopping, it has to terminate many processes which take a while and might hang. The script needs to verify that the process has indeed terminated, and send an email if such does not happen after a given period. • Setting up SSL on Nginx, Passenger, Sinatra

  I have a Sinatra app that runs both on locally and on Heroku. When visiting my site over HTTPS across Heroku, it will indeed work as Heroku provides this by default. How can I set up SSL to work on my localhost machine? I will enable my Sinatra app to only allow secure connections so I need to test this both in development and production. Currently, I am running the following locally: SERVER= nginx/1.6.0 + Phusion Passenger 4.0.42 Also, where is my nginx folder? I don't have it installed in the normal location (Ubuntu) so this must come custom with Passenger?

• Linux program unable to access files in group

  I'm having trouble configuring things on linux so that a program can access certain files. Let's call it pgm A. It has uid uA and gid gA. In addition, uid uA is listed in /etc/group as a member of group gX. The problem is that pgm A cannot access files for which the uid is root and the gid is gX, but only when pgm A is called from another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA. If I su as user uA and run pgm A from bash, it has no problem accessing files in group gX. But if another program, pgm B, which also runs as user uA, forks and execs pgm A, pgm A cannot access the files. I've verified that pgm A is indeed running as user uA, group gA, when launched from pgm B. So, if uA is a member of group gX, why can't the program access files which are readable by group gX? It's as if the operating system is ignoring the fact that user uA is also in group gX.

• Restoring openldap configuration from ldif file?

  I am trying to restore my OpenLDAP server from an ldif file I made before it went horribly wrong. All of the websites I found talk about using slapadd but when I run slapadd -v -l ~ns01/openldap_config.ldif it returns the error Could not stat config file "/etc/ldap/slapd.conf" : No such file or directory (2) slapadd: bad configuration file! When I look in the directory indeed the file does not exist, but this is because Ubuntu 11.10 is running in RTC mode, my LDAP server uses the /etc/slapd.d/cn=config for the configuration. So? What am I missing? Is slapadd the wrong tool to use? As I said above I running on Ubuntu 11.10 server edition 64-bit.

  I'm running some lengthy video encodes using the Handbrake command line interface. After all my encodes are done, I would like to have the PC speaker beep, as I usually turn my large external speakers off. On Linux I would install the "beep" package, but so far I haven't found such a program for Windows 7. Possibly related links: System "Beep" sound does not function in Windows Vista x64 with HD Audio devices (I am indeed using an HD Audio device: the SoundMAX ADI1986A) What’s up with the Beep driver in Windows 7? • MySQL gzipped Export in PhpMyAdmin has wrong size in Mozilla

  That is really strange. I am using PhpMyAdmin 2.11.9.6 on Linux hosting. While I am Exporting databases using "gzipped" compression in Mozilla, I am getting files which have size of uncompressed database, but they seems to be downloading in incredible speed (10 times quicker than is possible using my ISP). So at the end: for database of 10M size I am getting 10M gzip downloaded in miniseconds it has indeed shown 10M size on drive it is corrupted Zip compression is working just fine (I am getting file with cca 1M size with fine content of compressed database) And the weirdest thing: that is happening for Mozilla Firefox (13.0.1) only, Internet Explorer 9 is downloading correct gzipped files... Any hint?

• How do I configure ubuntu server's iptables to allow java without opening the floodgates?

  I'm new to servers, so please bear with me. I have my amateur site running. Problem is, I followed Rackspace's instructions on setting up iptables and am pretty sure that's why the java server I'm trying to use on port 8080 isn't working (it runs the script but my android test app doesn't connect to it). When I try running the same java server script on port 80 it doesn't even start. I also ran nmap on my domain and saw that indeed only port 80 and 22 (for ssh) are responding. Is it possible to run Java and apache happily on the same server? If so, how can I configure my iptables correctly. (I'm aware that I should probably do some sort of filtering in the java server itself, but will figure that out later).

• Numpad's Enter key is acting like the Command key instead

  I can't get the numpad Enter key to work on OS X 10.6.5. The numpad works fine, as do the plus and minus keys. Only the Enter is not working. I tried 2 keyboards and I get the same problem with both, so it's got to be a setting somewhere. In Keyboard Viewer, when I press the key, it shows that the ? keys are pressed. And indeed, pressing Enter-L puts the cursor in the location bar of my browser, just like Command-L would. Is there a way to remap it?

• What would cause a single working website to not work on 1 out of 5 devices on a network?

  There is a specific website that loads up without problem on all machines on my network (both wired and wireless) except one laptop. This laptop is a Windows 7 machine that was just recovered using the recovery partition, so it is fresh. The site will not load in Firefox 3.6 or IE 8. The website is http://www.weightwacthers.com The site loads fine on my desktop, iPhone, and Droid, but not the laptop. In all my years in this business I've honestly never seen this happen. Also, 'Is it down for me or everyone' reports that it is indeed only me. What would cause this to happen?

• Share Only 1 folder using SMB

  I want to share my "My Videos" folder using Windows's built in SMB. The problem is that when I decide to share my video folder and check it on another device, the path always is: networkname>username>my videos instead of just my videos I noticed that indeed sharing gets turned on from the user folder down to the video folder instead of just on the folder I selected. So now my question is why this is happening; And how cold I just display my "my Videos" folder on my remote device and not the entire path? • Unable to connect to sharedfax error

  I'm running SBS2k on a machine with a 56k modem for all outgoing faxes. We have a terminal server running server 2003 enterprise and in printers the sharedfax shows "unable to connect status". When you right-click, properties, it gives you an error saying the spool service is not running and you cannot view properties. The spooler service is indeed running on the 2k3 server because I can view the other printer's properties..and on 2k I show the Microsoft Shared Fax service AND Print Spooler as started. Here's the tricky part, I can add the shared fax printer on a domain computer locally (Windows XP) and it will show ready status and I can send faxes, they show up on the 2k server's fax console manager as in progress. I've sent a couple from a few different workstations today successfully, but still unable to send from 2k3 terminal services.

• SSH Tunnel doesn't work in China

  Last year I was working in China for a few months. I never bothered setting up a real VPN, but just created a SSH tunnel, and changed my browsers proxy settings to connect through it. Everything worked great (except flash of course) but that was fine. However, now I'm back in China but I'm having problems with this approach. I do the same thing as last time, and according to https://ipcheckit.com/ my IP address is indeed the IP of my (private) server in the US, and I'm logging in to my server using a fingerprint I created long before going to China so no MITM should be possible. Furthermore the certificate from ipcheckit.com is from GeoTrust - so everything should be OK However, I still can't access sites which are blocked in China. Any idea how this could be possible?

• Unidentified Window OnStartup

  Every time I start up windows vista lately, I see a random floating window. It is a tiny little window with no title, and only the resize, maximize and restore buttons. I'd post an image, but I don't have reputation here yet. I can close it, and it does indeed go away, but I would love to figure out what it is and stop it from popping up at all. I used Autohotkey's window spy on it and all I learned is that it is a swing window, which doesn't help me out a whole lot. Is there a good way to identify which process it belongs to and figure out how to kill it?

The latest php version is indeed installed in /usr/local/bin The problem is that my $PATH variable is the following (doing an echo $PATH reveals it) : /usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/X11/bin ...so the old version of php (that comes with mountain lion) always run first Any ideas on how to solve this? • 2 GB of memory in 1 GB system is a problem?

  Hi folks, I just installed 2 1 Gig sticks into my friend's machine, thinking that it would take all the 2 GBs. Unfortunately, according to Dell's website, it says the maximum amount of memory accessible to the machine is arbitrarily set to 1 GB! The system indeed reports having 1 GB of memory accessible to it, but I'm worried that having 2 GB in there might break something. Are my fears reasonable? Should I buy two 512 MB sticks instead? • Why do I get a PHP 5.2.6 segmentation fault when using PDO_SQlite?

  This is an installation on ModWest's shared hosting. I have enabled both PDO and PDO_sqlite on the server and phpinfo() verifies both are running. When I access PDO itself, I'm fine, and getting a meaningful error. <?php $dbh = new PDO(""); ?> This gives me an "Invalid Connection String" error. But, as soon as I begin a connection string with sqlite:, I get a total crash. When I run via the webserver, I'm seeing NO error. When I enter a nonexistant filename, PHP does indeed create the file. I tried running the constructor via CLI and there I do get a simple error: Segmentation Fault I'm not seeing ANYTHING in the PHP 5.2.6 changelogs about this bug. Anyone have any additional troubleshooting steps? The OS is Debian 5.0.4

  Hi, I have ubuntu 9.10 desktop VMware VM with the default grub2 installed. There is some weird problem with this VM. When you clone this vm and have a customization script run, the cloned machine crashes at first boot (VMware does not officially suport customizaing Ubuntu newer than 8.04). After the creash the Grub boot menu is displayed but there is not time out. I checked /boot/grub/grub.cfg and it does indeed show a timeout of 10 seconds. Nothing happens till I select an option with the keyboard. The second time the Ubuntu loads, it does not crash. My question is, how do I make the grub menu timeout in that case? Thanks.

• Managing multiple ssh keys

  I have a lot of ssh keys, they are all passphrase protected and managed by ssh-agent. As a result of this, I am now getting "Too many authentication failures" on some connections. As has been explained on this site before, this is because ssh will try all keys the agent throws at it. The proposed solution is to use IdentitiesOnly in the config, together with an IdentityFile. While this indeed stops offering wrong keys, it seems it completely disables the agent in full, so now I have to type the passphrase on every connection. I could not find clear info about this. Does IdentitiesOnly just disable getting keys from ssh-agent in full? Or should it just block out the keys that aren't mentioned? • Meeting reminders disappearing after accepting

  I have a particular user whose Outlook is acting up. Whenever he accepts a meeting invitation from a specific person, the reminders get turned off in the calendar. Every other person who got the meeting invitation still gets the reminders. This is the only thread that I found somewhat relevant: http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/32118199/lost-functionality-when-accepting-meeting-requests.aspx This is weird though because he doesn't have any rules that should cause the meeting invitations to be stored in a weird folder or anything, they are left alone. I tried loading his profile and accepting the invitation on my end, and it went through fine (it was marked down in the calendar with a 15 minute reminder). When I looked at previous meetings he accepted from that person, there is indeed no reminder set. Any suggestions? Windows XPSP3, Outlook 2007, Exchange 2k3
