• Optimize bootup sequence

  I'm on Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from 10.10) and suffering really high bootup times. It got so annoying, that I decided to dive into bootchart analysis myself. Therefore I installed bootchart and restarted the system which generated this chart. However, I'm not really experienced in reading such stuff. What causes the long bootup sequence?   Does anybody knows of a good application to get it done quickly and efficiently ? I bought Word Cleaner but the results are merely sufficient and I need go over all the generated html files to clean tons of useless injected tags like <strongH</strong<strongell</strong<strongo </strong<emWor</em<emld</em Most of the articles displayed on a website I manage are based on documents written on MS Word by people how has little idea of what are margins for or ordered/unordered lists, foot/end notes etc and I cannot make them use something else. Does anyone has a tip to help me handle those pages more efficiently than going over them to correct and apply my CSS style ? NB: Just for the record, using "Save as HTML DOC" in Word is faaar worst than Word cleaner

• 2 Google Tag Manager containers = double triggers?

  I have a Joomla website with existing analytics done by a GTM tag and I need to add another image tag (1x1 pixel) from a separate GTM container. I set the event name for the additional GTM container to a different name from from the existing GTM container (default 'gtm.js') so that the new tag only fires under the specified event. The new container tested out fine in a blank HTML page, but when it is put in the website, it ends up firing twice. I know that because Firebug showed 2 1x1 pixels being loaded and I mark each request with a randomly-generated UID to distinguish them on the server side. I suspect this being caused by having multiple GTM container tags but want to check whether anyone has run into this problem before? As of now, I could not verify nor fix the double counting problem.

• How secure is KeePassX?

  I have hundreds of passwords, since I use a different random one for each website/service. They are all generated & stored with KeePassX, which can be synced to different computers and my android phone via dropbox (or ubuntuone). I know the database of KeePassX is secure (at least with a good passphrase). But what about when I am copying the password into the clipboard (where it is stored for 5 seconds)? Can any program running in user-space access the clipboard and store the password? If so, how big of a security risk is this?

So in my game implementation I have to create body for all found vertices and I have to generate image based on that polygon shape. So my problem is how to create image that match the user provided vertices. In cocos2d I listen that there is an implementation of something like Image Masking. • Powermapper alternatives and google analytics?

  Whats a good application to map the hierarchical structure of a website and maybe get some google analytic action going on? Powermapper is pretty expensive and the trial version didnt seem particularly good at importing google analytics CSV files as advertised. In fact, out of the 1000 pages mapped, exactly 0 were successfully imported. I dont really need all the features Powermapper offers anyway, so the price tag is a bit much. All I really need is like, a simple visual representation of my (automatically generated) site structure (like a hierarchical site structure) and the ability to integrate my google analytic stats (page views mostly) with it.

• Using PhysX, how can I predict where I will need to generate procedural terrain collision shapes?

  In this situation, I have terrain height values I generate procedurally. For rendering, I use the camera's position to generate an appropriate sized height map. For collision, however, I need to have height fields generated in areas where objects may intersect. My current potential solution, which may be naive, is to iterate over all "awake" physics actors, use their bounds/extents and velocities to generate spheres in which they may reside after a physics update, then generate height values for ranges encompassing clustered groups of actors. Much of that data is likely already calculated by PhysX already, however. Is there some API, maybe a set of queries, even callbacks from the spatial system, that I could use to predict where terrain height values will be needed?

• Software Center won't take into account my changed OpenID name: any idea?

  Failing to install IntelliJ from the Software Center, I realized my login is wrong in the /etc/apt/auth.conf entry that the install process generates. In this file, I see my original OpenID, that's the one which got automatically generated when signing up on Launchpad. It contains my last name so I changed it. I purged conf and binaries for Ubuntu One, reinstalled, deleted all listed "Devices" from app, all "Applications" from Launchpad. Deleted ~/.cache/software-center/, reboot, but still: When installing IntelliJ, the auth.conf file receives my original OpenID, not the modified one Problem is that the commercial subscription, for IntelliJ private PPA, uses my modified OpenID, so authentication attempt fails. I can't remove nor modify this subscription, even by changing back my OpenID into Launchpad. Any idea to solve this?

• How can I apply Readme Driven Development to an ongoing project?

  I'm assigned to a project where the goal is to update an existing software. This software was developed in a totally ad hoc manner, which means that any documentation generated is outdated, confused and just plain useless. I do not want to retroactivelly produce all the missing artifacts, since this would just be a waste of time. The code base is ugly, and really need some serious refactoring, but this is another story. What I want is to apply Readme Driven Development to guide this project. So, basically, I want to write a Readme, which will document every change meaningful at the user level. The problem is, I have no idea about how to structure this document. For me, it's pretty clear that it should have a different layout than the traditional Readme. I really want to document changes, and not the current state of affairs. Any ideas?

  Please, here is my little code for creating thumbnails of pictures saved in a folder named 'pictures', and saving them in another folder named 'thumbs'. ! /bin/bash for i in *.jpg do convert -thumbnail 100 pictures/$i thumbs/$i done However, there two things the program doesn't do: 1) It does not retain the name of the pictures in the thumbnail. For instance, I would want it to generate a thumbnail with the name pic.jpg for a picture named pic.jpg 2) Also, when I run the program, i don't want it to generate the thumbnail for a picture it has already generated its thumbnail, unless that picture has been modified.   I was in the process of discussing with a client using adwords for their next step of promotion and no-one at the company was aware of the system, and certainly hadn't created any adwords campaigns, however in the midst of the discussion and trying a few relevant search queries out, one of the ads in the ad block on the right hand pane was for their website. Is there any way of determining if the ad was somehow generated of is it definitely the case that someone had to consciously take the ad out and if so who might have placed it? They have no referral system so someone outside of the company would get no benefit from running the ad

• Why can't I get 100% code coverage on a method that calls a constructor of a generic type?

  Today I came across a wierd issue in a Visual Studio 2008 Code Coverage Analysis. Consider the following method:  private IController GetController<T>(IContext context) where T : IController, new() {     IController controller = new T();     controller.ListeningContext = context;     controller.Plugin = this;     return controller; } This method is called in a unit test as follows (MenuController has an empty constructor): controller = plugin.GetController<MenuController>(null);  After calling this method from a Unit Test, the following code coverage report is generated: As you can see, Code Coverage is only 85%. Looking up the code results in the following: Apparently, the call to the constructor of the generic type is considered only partly covered. WHY? Google didn't help. And MSDN didn't help at all, of course. Anybody who does know?

• Is there an application which organizes my "Downloads" folder automatically?

  I'm looking for an application which puts all files from my Downloads folder into a new generated folder (called like the date) per button press or automatically is able to move files to its destinated directory automatically (p.e. *.png files should be put into /home/user/pictures/random/, *.avi to /videos/, ...) If you are familiar with the DayFolder application: I'm looking for an application like that but for any folder (not only the Desktop). In my case that's Downloads because this folder gets cluttered on my PC very fast. Thanks for your advice/help!

• Duplicate (Spotify) Icon in launcher

  I have installed spotify on Ubuntu 13.04 and have locked the icon on the launcher. But when I exit the program fully or even restart and use that icon to open spotify, a new icon is created or a different icon is generated with a ? on it. It is a clean install of Ubuntu 13.04 so was wondering if this is a known bug or if there was a way of making sure it just doesn't created a duplicate icon? N.B it has not happened as of yet to any other program I have installed (Chrome & Steam)

• Color based collision detection

  I am making a game where you fly a ship around some randomly generated planets. Since I am using a for loop to draw over 5000 planets, using the rectangle class or an oval-type class for this is not an option, since creating many objects will severely affect performance. Bitmasking each planet will likely result in performance issues too, so the only candidate is color based collision detection, because I don't need to apply some sort of object to everything I want to check for collisions. Is any way to check the perimeter around the ship for a certain color?

  I got a bunch of C++ sources files and headers. They may use external libraries such as Boost e.g. I am interested in the process of building binaries for Windows and *nix. Makefiles (*nix) and .vcproj (Windows) call compilers with some specifications such as the order of compilation, compilation options and stuff. CMakeLists.txt can be used by CMake to build either makefiles or .vcproj and use very helpful commands such as recursive search of files, automatic linkage with known libraries, installers, variables that can be used in source files... Is there any existing tool that would generate a CMakeLists.txt from specified options ? Options could be like : scan this folder and make a library out of it, then scan this other folder and make an executable and automatically link both with Boost as well along with a user friendly installer with generated INSTALL.txt and README.txt. Something very powerful like that.
