• Programmatically change the icon of the executable

  I am developing an application called WeatherBar. Its main functionality is based on its interaction with the Windows 7 taskbar — it changes the icon depending on the weather conditions in a specific location. The icons I am using in the application are all stored in a compiled native resource file (.res) — I am using it instead of the embedded resource manifest for icons only. By default, I modify the Icon property of the main form to change the icons accordingly and it works fine, as long as the icon is not pinned to the taskbar. When it gets pinned, the icon in the taskbar automatically switches to the default one for the executable (with index 0 in the resource file). After doing a little bit of research, I figured that a way to change the icon would be changing the shortcut icon (as all pinned applications are actually shortcuts stored in the user folder). But it didn't work. I assume that I need to change the icon for the executable, and therefore use UpdateResource, but I am not entirely sure about this. My executable is not digitally signed, so it shouldn't be an issue modifying it. What would be the way to solve this issue?

• Turn image in google maps V3?

  Hi, I need help with JavaScript in google map v3 I have an image and I need to be able to turn it. That works, but the real problem it's that I cant afect an marker cause I don't know how to call it and modify this marker. • Best practice for managing changes to 3rd party open source libraries?

  On a recent project, I had to modify an open source library to address a functional deficiency. I followed the SVN best practice of creating a "vendor source" repository and made my changes there. I also submitted the patch to the mailing list of that project. Unfortunately, the project only has a couple of maintainers and they are very slow to commit updates. At some point, I expect the library to be updated, and I expect that my project will want to use the upgraded library. But now I have a potential problem... I don't know whether my patch will have been applied to this future release of the 3rd party library. I also don't know whether my patch will even still be compatible with the internal implementation of the upgraded components. And in all likelihood, someone else will be maintaining my project by that point. Should I name the library in a special way so it is clear that we made special modifications (eg. commons-lang-2.x-for-my-project.jar)? Should I just document the patch and reference the SVN location and a link to the mailing list item in a README? No option that I can think of seems to be fool-proof in an upgrade scenario. What is the best practice for this?

• Why pseudo-elements :before and :after appear in front of my DIV element and not behind?

  I have a DIV element with this given class: .slideshow { background: white; width: 700px; height: 300px; padding:10px; margin: 0 auto; position: relative; box-shadow: 0px 0px 5px grey, 0px 10px 20px rgba(0,0,0,.1) inset; } I define those two pseudo-elements (:before and :after): .slideshow:before, .slideshow:after { content: " "; background: green; width: 50%; height: 50%; position: absolute; z-index: -10; } My problem is that those two pseudo-elements appear in front of my DIV and not behind. Is there any specific reason for this behaviour? Here is an example: EXAMPLE The Javascript part is a bit messy but i'm still working on it. Also I've noticed that if I delete all the JS part I don't have anymore this problem, but I don't think there is anything in the code that should modify the slideshow DIV SOLVED: The problem is in the javascript part where I have: $('.slideshow').css('-webkit-transform', 'rotate(0deg)'); Removing this line solved the problem. I guess that pseudo-elements :before and :after are not compatible with the property transform.

• In need of a Smarter Environmental Package Configuration

  I am trying to set up a package template in SSIS, following the Wrox Programmer to Programmer book, SQL Server 2008 Integration Services: Problem - Design - Solution. I'm really liking this book even though it is 2008 and we're using SQL Server 2005. I've got a working package template that uses an Indirect XML package configuration to identify what environment (local developer, dev, QA, production, etc) the package is being run in. That locates the SQL Server package configuration for the environment. That set-up is great and all except for the environment variable at the very front of it all. My team would prefer it if the package could use the same environment resource locator as all our other applications and tools use, so we don't two environment markers with essentially the same information in them. Normally we look up a registry key in HKey_Local_Machine but the Registry Package Configuration type only lets you look up the HKey_Current_User registries. My first thought was to write a new Package Configuration Type class that extends the Registry type; after all we'd had such luck writing our own custom log provider. SSIS is super extendable, right? So there doesn't seem to be a way to write your own Package Configuration Types. Is there still some way I can configure my SSIS SQL Server package configuration from a HKLM registry key connection string? If this is not possible, what other workarounds are available? My idea is to write a PowerShell script that will create/modify the Environment Variable that the package will use by fetching the connection string from the registry. This way there's still two markers, but at least then it's automatically maintained and automated. Is this kind of workaround necessary? Thank you for your time.

• finding links that are hyper-links in jQuery

  Im trying to take a link either when clicked or hover over be able to grab the attribute href and tell if its a hyper-link or not. Also i want it to be able to tell me if its a hyper-link to my own site. Plus various other filters. The main purpose for this is so that when a internal link is clicked it will tell ajax to grab the content, alot of my links are generated (via wordpress)so I can't modify them too much. Another purpose for this is so i can also make all external links open on a new window. I have a solution that works on a simple test page but when i put into a working page it breaks. I know i am probably making this harder then it should be. • How to detect what allowed character in current Regular Expression by using JavaScript?

  In my web application, I create some framework that use to bind model data to control on page. Each model property has some rule like string length, not null and regular expression. Before submit page, framework validate any binded control with defined rules. So, I want to detect what character that is allowed in each regular expression rule like the following example. "^[0-9]$" allow only digit characters like 1, 2, 3. "^[a-zA-Z_][a-zA-Z_-0-9]+$" allow only a-z, - and _ characters However, this function should not care about grouping, positioning of allowed character. It just tells about possible characters only. By the way, complex regular expression like find two words near(\bword1\W+(?:\w+\W+){1,6}?word2\b) must be ignore to verify and it should return any characters is possible. Do you have any idea for creating this function? PS. I know it easy to create specified function like numeric only for allowing only digit characters. But I need share/reuse same piece of code both data tier(contains all model validator) and UI tier without modify anything. Thanks

• How to pass data to a C++0x lambda function that will run in a different thread?

  In our company we've written a library function to call a function asynchronously in a separate thread. It works using a combination of inheritance and template magic. The client code looks as follows: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, &DemoThread::SomeFunction, stringToPassByValue); Since the introduction of lambda functions I'd like to use it in combination with lambda functions. I'd like to write the following client code: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, [=]() { const std::string someCopy = stringToPassByValue; }); Now, with the Visual C++ 2010 this code doesn't work. What happens is that the stringToPassByValue is not copied. Instead the "capture by value" feature passes the data by reference. The result is that if the function is executed after stringToPassByValue has gone out of scope, the application crashes as its destructor is called already. So I wonder: is it possible to pass data to a lambda function as a copy? Note: One possible solution would be to modify our framework to pass the data in the lambda parameter declaration list, as follows: DemoThread thread; std::string stringToPassByValue = "The string to pass by value"; AsyncCall(thread, [=](const std::string stringPassedByValue) { const std::string someCopy = stringPassedByValue; } , stringToPassByValue); However, this solution is so verbose that our original function pointer solution is both shorter and easier to read. Update: The full implementation of AsyncCall is too big to post here. In short, what happens is that the AsyncCall template function instantiates a template class holding the lambda function. This class is derived from a base class that contains a virtual Execute() function, and upon an AsyncCall() call, the function call class is put on a call queue. A different thread then executes the queued calls by calling the virtual Execute() function, which is polymorphically dispatched to the template class which then executes the lambda function.

• How can I specify processor affinity?

  I have an application that's having some trouble handling multi-processor systems. It's not an app that I have a particular affection for modifying and would like to avoid it if possible. However, I'm not above modifying the code if I have to. The application is written in VBA (and hence my inclination to avoid touching it). We've noticed that the application seems to run pretty smoothly if we set the processor affinity to a single processor using task manager, only manifesting instability when processor affinity isn't set. I know that I can specify the processor affinity of a task using .NET and as such, there lies a possibility of me writing a shell application that could be used to run legacy applications with a specified processor affinity, does anyone have any experience with this and can throw out some ideas as to headaches I'm likely to run into with this approach? The other question is: Is it in fact possible to modify the core VBA product to handle its own processor affinity? I've never had to handle this with any of my applications natively so this (at this point in time) is completely outside my realm of expertise. Thanks in advance

• Efficient (basic) regular expression implementation for streaming data

  I'm looking for an implementation of regular expression matching that operates on a stream of data -- i.e., it has an API that allows a user to pass in one character at a time and report when a match is found on the stream of characters seen so far. Only very basic (classic) regular expressions are needed, so a DFA/NFA based implementation seems like it would be well-suited to the problem. Based on the fact that it's possible to do regular expression matching using a DFA/NFA in a single linear sweep, it seems like a streaming implementation should be possible. Requirements: The library should try to wait until the full string has been read before performing the match. The data I have really is streaming; there is no way to know how much data will arrive, it's not possible to seek forward or backward. Implementing specific stream matching for a couple special cases is not an option, as I don't know in advance what patterns a user might want to look for. For the curious, my use case is the following: I have a system which intercepts memory writes inside a full system emulator, and I would like to have a way to identify memory writes that match a regular expression (e.g., one could use this to find the point in the system where a URL is written to memory). • mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine gives me problems since security patch of MS

  I am busy on this problem since 2 days ago and hope someone can get me out of it. I have Excel 2010 (full install 944Mb) on my Windows 8 computer. It works well. But when I modify my workbook (containing a ListView version 6.0) I am not able to run it on my client's computer. I get the error: Could Not Load An Object. Not Available on This Machine. Even it works well on my dev machine. The reason is: Microsoft applied a Security Patch (near august 2012 I think) on mscomctl.ocx and my Excel 2010 installation files (downloaded not long ago) contains the new version of mscomctl.ocx. The clients using my Excel file don't apply the security patch at this moment. Se everytime I publish my Excel file to client's computers (from my dev environment), I reference the new mscomctl.ocx. That's the problem. I already try to get the old mscomctl.ocx from client's computer and copy & register it on my dev machine but then I got errors (Class not registered, ...) when I create a userform and drag a listview on it. So: mscomctl.ocx on client's machine is version 6.1.98.13 from 2008. mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine is version 6.1.98.34 from 2012. My question: Does someone have an idea how to proceed to have a usable version of mscomctl.ocx on my dev machine? Thank you very much.

• Computation overhead in C# - Using getters/setters vs. modifying arrays directly and casting speeds

  I was going to write a long-winded post, but I'll boil it down here: I'm trying to emulate the graphical old-school style of the NES via XNA. However, my FPS is SLOW, trying to modify 65K pixels per frame. If I just loop through all 65K pixels and set them to some arbitrary color, I get 64FPS. The code I made to look-up what colors should be placed where, I get 1FPS. I think it is because of my object-orented code. Right now, I have things divided into about six classes, with getters/setters. I'm guessing that I'm at least calling 360K getters per frame, which I think is a lot of overhead. Each class contains either/and-or 1D or 2D arrays containing custom enumerations, int, Color, or Vector2D, bytes. What if I combined all of the classes into just one, and accessed the contents of each array directly? The code would look a mess, and ditch the concepts of object-oriented coding, but the speed might be much faster. I'm also not concerned about access violations, as any attempts to get/set the data in the arrays will done in blocks. E.g., all writing to arrays will take place before any data is accessed from them. As for casting, I stated that I'm using custom enumerations, int, Color, and Vector2D, bytes. Which data types are fastest to use and access in the .net Framework, XNA, XBox, C#? I think that constant casting might be a cause of slowdown here. Also, instead of using math to figure out which indexes data should be placed in, I've used precomputed lookup tables so I don't have to use constant multiplication, addition, subtraction, division per frame. :)

• Is it acceptable to wrap PHP library functions solely to change the names?

  I'm going to be starting a fairly large PHP application this summer, on which I'll be the sole developer (so I don't have any coding conventions to conform to aside from my own). PHP 5.3 is a decent language IMO, despite the stupid namespace token. But one thing that has always bothered me about it is the standard library and its lack of a naming convention. So I'm curious, would it be seriously bad practice to wrap some of the most common standard library functions in my own functions/classes to make the names a little better? I suppose it could also add or modify some functionality in some cases, although at the moment I don't have any examples (I figure I will find ways to make them OO or make them work a little differently while I am working). If you saw a PHP developer do this, would you think "Man, this is one shoddy developer?" Additionally, I don't know much (or anything) about if/how PHP is optimized, and I know that usually PHP performace doesn't matter. But would doing something like this have a noticeable impact on the performance of my application?

  I use Hibernate3 and Hibernate Tools 3.2.4 to generate hbm.xml and java files and I want to use List instead of HashSet(...). I've tried to modify the hbm.xml files, putting list instead of set. Is there any way to specify to hibernate tools that I want to generate automatically a list not a HashSet? • Spork doesnt reload code

  I am using following gems and ruby-1.9.3-p194: rails 3.2.3 rspec-rails 2.9.0 spork 1.0.0rc2 guard-spork 0.6.1 Full list of used gems is available in this Gemfile.lock or Gemfile. And I am using this configuration files: Guardfile .rspec spec_helper.rb factories.rb If I modify any model (or custom validator in app/validators etc) reloading code doesnt works. I mean when I run specs (hit Enter on guard console) Spork contain "old code" and I got obsolete error messages. But when I manually restart Guard and Spork (CTRC-C CTRL-d guard) everything works fine. But it is getting tired after few times. Questions: Can somebody look at my config files please and fix error which block updating code. Or maybe this is an issue of newest Rails version? PS This problem repeats and repeats over some projects (and on some NOT). But I haven't figured out yet why this is happens. PS2 Perhaps this problem is something to do with ActiveAdmin? When I change file in app/admin code is reloaded.

• Post parameters to a frame of new window

  I have to modify an existing web search page. There is a page, where all the search filters are (form with name "searchform"). When the search button is pressed, results are shown in new window. Because the search takes up to 30 seconds, and while searching the window stays blank, I have to add a label "Searching. Please wait..." at the new created window with the results. So the search window is created, and I set it's location to a frameset. First frame will show the label, and the second will show the results. But i can't manage to update the second frame with the results. • push_back private vectors with 2 methods, one isn't working

  I have a class with a private vector of doubles. To access or modify these values, at first I used methods such as void classA::pushVector(double i) { this->vector.push_back(i); } double classA::getVector(int i) { return vector[i]; } This worked for a while until I found I would have to overload a lot of operators for what I needed, so I tried to change it to get and set the vector directly instead of the values, i.e. void classA::setVector(vector<double> vector) { this->vector = vector; } vector<double> classA::getVector() { return vector; } Now, say there is a classB, which has a private classA element, which also has get and set methods to read and write. The problem was when I tried to push back a value to the end vector in classA. void classB::setFirstValue(double first) { this->getClassA().getVector().push_back(first); } This does absolutely nothing to the vector. It remains unchanged and I can't figure out why... Any ideas?

• At what point is it worth using a database?

  I have a question relating to databases and at what point is worth diving into one. I am primarily an embedded engineer, but I am writing an application using QT to interface with our controller. We are at an odd point where we have enough data that it would be feasible to implement a database (around 700+ items and growing) to manage everything, but I am not sure it is worth the time right now to deal with. I have no problems implementing the GUI with files generated from excel and parsed in, but it gets tedious and hard to track even with VBA scripts. I have been playing around with converting our data into something more manageable for the application side with Microsoft Access and that seems to be working well. If that works out I am only a step (or several) away from using an SQL database and using the QT library to access and modify it. I don't have much experience managing data at this level and am curious what may be the best way to approach this. So what are some of the real benefits of using a database if any in this case? I realize much of this can be very application specific, but some general ideas and suggestions on how to straddle the embedded/application programming line would be helpful. Thanks

• Using array instead of lots of db queries in PHP

  My function looks like that. It works but does lots of work (recursively calls itself and does lots of db queries.). There must be another way to do same thing but with array (with one query). I can't figure out how to modify this function to get it work with array. • Winforms App Not Displaying Graphical Elements in Design Mode

  I wrote a bunch of code in the .cs file in c# for a winforms application. The application runs fine, and everything is in it's place. Something like this: using.. namespace Temp { public class Temp : Form { Button b1; TextBox t1; Temp() { b1.Text = "Some Text"; b1.Size = new Size(50,20); ... } void function1() { // stuff } static void Main() { Application.Run(new Temp()); } } } How can I modify my code (or fix it somehow) so that the design view displays the elements in their correct positions and view so that I can visually edit them instead of having to trial/error everything. Edit for Clarification My application runs fine. The problem is, that I didn't use designer to create the application and so in the designer view, the app is empty. But not empty when I run it, since everything is positioned programmatically in the .cs file. My question is, how can I fix this, so that the designer shows the objects correctly. There is no quick fix other than to redesign everything?

• Cannot redeclare class on a copy of a site

  I've developed a small SMS utility for a customer in PHP. The details are of non-importance. This project is hosted in: http://project.example.com/customer1 Now a second customer requests almost the same functionality, one cheap way of providing this is to copy the project from the first customer and modify it slightly. So i made a direct copy of the project for customer1 to another folder for customer 2. This project is hosted in: http://project.example.com/customer2 Now when i try and run the project for customer2 (calling a single page), i get the error message: Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class SmsService in /var/www/html/project/customer1/application/service.class.php on line 3 Here, service.class.php is a simple interface with 3 methods: interface SmsService { public function SendSms($mobile, $customerId, $customerName, $message); public function QueryIncomingResponse(); public function CleanExpiredConfirmations($maxConfirmationDays); } printing the backtrace in service.class.php reveals something interresting: #0 require_once() called at [/var/www/html/project/customer2/endpoint/queryIncomingResponse.php:2] Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class SmsService in /var/www/html/project/customer1/application/service.class.php on line 3 Line 2 in queryIncomingResponses is the very first require line there is. Line 3 in service.class.php is the first statement there is in the file (Line 2 is an empty line and line 1 is the php file opening tag). Naturally, I only work with relative requires (double checked this) so there is no way one include/require from customer2 actually refers to a file for customer1. It seems to me that in some way SmsService and other classes gets cached by PHP. (I have little control over the server environment). One solution to this would be namespaces. Unfortunatly, we work with PHP 5.1.7 where namespaces are not a part of the language feature just yet. Another way would be to mimic namespaces by prefixing all classes but this approach just feels dirty. Does anyone have more information on this problem and possibly solutions? • Html 5 Time Tag not recognized by IE8 when cloning

  I have been having trouble getting IE to recognize the new Time tag in this context. This all works great in FF. '' : 'that') + '">' + commentHtml.html() + '</article>'; $(html).insertAfter('.articleComment:last'); The HTML looks something like this: <article class="articleComment that"> <div id="156" class="parent"> <div class="byline"> <p>Posted <time pubdate="pubdate" datetime="2010-05-07T09:11:08">today</time> by<br/> <a class="username" href="/u/matt">matt</a> </p> <p class="report"><a href="#">Report?</a></p> </div> <div class="comment">left</div> </div> </article> IE can find the Time tag but it returns a collection of 2 elements. I assume the beginning and ending. However, I cannot access it to modify it. I have tried val(), html() and text(). I also can't drop to the actual HTMLElement. I can't get(0).innerHTML. But, if I .get(0).tagName it actually is the Time tag I've got. Any ideas? I hope this makes sense.
