• Problem with the screen resolution on 12.04

- by sveinn
I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop. The screen resolution is stuck in 1024x768. The screen is made for 1280x800. When I run xrandr I get: xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 800 x 600, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 61.0* 800x600 61.0 1280x800 isn't offered and I get gamma size error. I was going to look into the Xorg.conf file but I couldn't locate it. 1280x800 was displayed in Windows 7 and I think it is being displayed in Grub before Ubuntu starts also. Here are some details about my computer: CPU: Intel atom D2500 1.86GHz Chipset: Intel 945GSE+ICH7M LCD: 14" TFT 16:9 Resolution ratio: 1280*800 Video Card: Intel integrated GMA950 Does anyone know how to fix this?

• Changing the rendering resolution while maintaining the design layout

- by Coyote
I would like to increase the FPS of my project. Currently I would like to try reducing the resolution at which the scenes are rendered. Let's say I never want to draw more than 1280*720. What ever the real resolution is. How should I proceed? I tried pEGLView->setFrameSize(1280, 720); but only reduces the displayed size of the frame on screen (boxing). In my activity I tried setting the size of the "surface" but this seems to completely break the layout (as defined by setDesignResolutionSize). @Override public Cocos2dxGLSurfaceView onCreateView() { Cocos2dxGLSurfaceView surfaceView = new Cocos2dxGLSurfaceView(this); surfaceView.getHolder().setFixedSize(1280, 720); return surfaceView; } Is there a way to simply change the rendered

• How do I create a big multiplayer world in UDK?

- by Dorpe
I want to create a big multiplayer world in UDK and I'm having a few difficulties. I created the biggest terrain possible but then any terrain related action I do takes forever. However, I've seen videos of people make same size terrain and working without a problem. My pc is strong enough, so maybe someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I want to make it even bigger then the biggest terrain size, so I was thinking of doing level streaming but then I read that streaming is working server side which means if I have a player on every terrain all terrains will still be loaded and I want to save as much memory possible so it will work well online. Thanks for any help you can give.

• Why does installing Grub2 give an "ISO9660: filesystem destruction..." warning?

- by Ettore
I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my computer, but at the end of the installation it gave me an error and it didn't install grub2. Installing GRUB there could result in FILESYSTEM DESTRUCTION if valuable data is overwritten by grub-setup (--skip-fs-probe disables this check, use at your own risk). We have a full complement of sessions planned, from updates for some of your yearly favorites to lots of completely new topics. Some of the long-standing favorites include the PeopleSoft Technology Roadmap, PeopleTools Tips and Techniques and a number of candid panel discussions. Coverage of the latest trends include new sessions on PeopleSoft on mobile platforms, PeopleSoft's new user experience and interaction model, advances in reporting and analytics and employing virtualization to reduce costs. The PeopleTools team is also working closely with Applications groups this year to demonstrate to users how advances in PeopleTools will have a direct and beneficial impact on the latest applications releases. There are plenty of sessions for developers and administrators as well, from sessions on enhancing, integrating, maintaining, and securing your applications, to tuning for performance. We'll also update you on the latest platform roadmap. In addition to these conventional sessions, we will of course be manning the demo pods, where you'll be able to see the latest functionality first hand. We plan to engage in lots of direct customer interaction. One of the highlights each year for our team as well as attendees is the session in which a panel of senior PeopleTools leaders talks candidly and engages in open Q&A with customers about our products. This is definitely a discussion worth joining in on. Keep your eyes on this blog in the coming weeks for details on many of the sessions we have planned. We look forward to seeing you at OpenWorld 2012!

• Did you know you can shrink a transaction log even when log shipping?

- by simonsabin
David's posted a great post on shrinking the transaction log and log shipping. Log shipping and shrinking transaction logs Unlike shrinking the data file shrinking the transaction log isn't a bad thing, IF you don't need the log to be that size. I've seen many systems that shrink the log because it has grown only for it to grow the next day to the same size becuase of an overnight operation. To reduce the growth of the transaction log you need to do one or more of the following, 1.Back it up more frequently2.Change to simple recovery model3.Use minimally logged operations4.Keep transactions short and small5.Break large transactions into smaller transactions6.If using replication ensure that your backup of the replication topology is frequent enough

• Html5 games, what is the standard dimension to use?

- by aoi
I am trying to make html5 games to be played on the browser(not offline apps), and I am trying to support the maximum number of platforms, hence I need to know what dimension should I use for the game canvas so that it works in the most number of places. Also is there anyway to "scale" a large game to fit in the tiny size of iphone(around 320x356px I think). By "scale" I don't mean to actually resize just the canvas, as because that can mess up the coordinate based calculations, and for a large number of objects, re-positioning based on canvas size can be a real hassle.

• Revisiting the Generations

- by Row Henson
I was asked earlier this year to contribute an article to the IHRIM publication – Workforce Solutions Review. My topic focused on the reality of the Gen Y population 10 years after their entry into the workforce. Below is an excerpt from that article: It seems like yesterday that we were all talking about the entry of the Gen Y'ers into the workforce and what a radical change that would have on how we attract, retain, motivate, reward, and engage this new, younger segment of the workforce. We all heard and read that these youngsters would be more entrepreneurial than their predecessors – the Gen X'ers – who were said to be more loyal to their profession than their employer. And, we heard that these “youngsters” would certainly be far less loyal to their employers than the Baby Boomers or even earlier Traditionalists. It was also predicted that – at least for the developed parts of the world – they would be more interested in work/life balance than financial reward; they would need constant and immediate reinforcement and recognition and we would be lucky to have them in our employment for two to three years. And, to keep them longer than that we would need to promote them often so they would be continuously learning since their long-term (10-year) goal would be to own their own business or be an independent consultant. Well, it occurred to me recently that the first of the Gen Y'ers are now in their early 30s and it is time to look back on some of these predictions. Many really believed the Gen Y'ers would enter the workforce with an attitude – expect everything to be easy for them – have their employers meet their demands or move to the next employer, and I believe that we can now say that, generally, has not been the case. Speaking from personal experience, I have mentored a number of Gen Y'ers and initially felt that with a 40-year career in Human Resources and Human Resources Technology – I could share a lot with them. I found out very quickly that I was learning at least as much from them! Some of the amazing attributes I found from these under-30s was their fearlessness, ease of which they were able to multi-task, amazing energy and great technical savvy. They were very comfortable with collaborating with colleagues from both inside the company and peers outside their organization to problem-solve quickly. Most were eager to learn and willing to work hard. This brings me to the generation that will follow the Gen Y'ers – the Generation Z'ers – those born after 1998. We have come full circle. If we look at the Silent Generation or Traditionalists, we find a workforce that preceded the television and even very early telephones. We Baby Boomers (as I fall right squarely in this category) remembered the invention of the television and telephone – but laptop computers and personal digital assistants (PDAs) were a thing of “StarTrek” and other science fiction movies and publications. Certainly, the Gen X'ers and Gen Y'ers grew up with the comfort of these devices just as we did with calculators. But, what of those under the age of 10 – how will the workplace look in 15 more years and what type of workforce will be required to operate in the mobile, global, virtual world. I spoke to a friend recently who had her four-year-old granddaughter for a visit. She said she found her in the den in front of the TV trying to use her hand to get the screen to move! So, you see – we have come full circle. The under-70 Traditionalist grew up in a world without TV and the Generation Z'er may never remember the TV we knew just a few years ago. As with every generation – we spend much time generalizing on their characteristics. The most important thing to remember is every generation – just like every individual – is different. The important thing for those of us in Human Resources to remember is that one size doesn’t fit all. What motivates one employee to come to work for you and stay there and be productive is very different than what the next employee is looking for and the organization that can provide this fluidity and flexibility will be the survivor for generations to come. And, finally, just when we think we have it figured out, a multitude of external factors such as the economy, world politics, industries, and technologies we haven’t even thought about will come along and change those predictions. As I reach retirement age – I do so believing that our organizations are in good hands with the generations to follow – energetic, collaborative and capable of working hard while still understanding the need for balance at work, at home and in the community! • Question about creating a sprite based 2-D Side Scroller with scaling/zooming

- by Arthur
I'm just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on how best to go about creating a 2-D game with zooming/scaling features akin to the early Samurai Showdown games. In this case it would be a side scroller a la Metal Slug, the zooming would come in as more enemy sprites entered the screen, or when facing a large sized boss. A feature that would be both cosmetic as well as functional to the game. I've done some reading and noticed a few suggestions that included drawing different sized sprites, a standard size and zoomed out size. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

• Partial Function Application

This is long overdo... Just a short and simple example of Partial Function Application.   For some good explanations, which also include the difference between Currying and Partial Function Application, check out: http://msmvps.com/blogs/jon_skeet/archive/2012/01/30/currying-vs-partial-function-application.aspx and also this answer on stackoverflow: http://stackoverflow.com/a/8826698/532517   And here is the example, taken from real code:           internal void Addfile(string parentDirName, string fileName, long size)         {             AddElement(parentDirName, fileName, (name, parent) => new File(name, size, parent));         }           public void AddDir(string parentDirName, string dirName)         {             AddElement(parentDirName, dirName, (name, parent) => new Directory(dirName, parent));         }           private void AddElement(string parentDirName, string name,                                 Func<string, FileSystemElement, FileSystemElement> elementCreator)         {             ValidateFileNames(parentDirName, name);             var parent = (Directory)_index[parentDirName];             FileSystemElement element = elementCreator(name, parent);             parent._elements.Add(element);             _index.Add(name, element);         }

• Ubuntu One isn't syncing in Windows 7

- by tuxtu
Ubuntu One was working just fine in friend's computer on Windows 7. Problem is that, suddenly it has stopped syncing. I want to share some observation regarding this problem. Hope this could be helpful to solve the problem. If I upload any file directly on web (using browser), the amount of file size (KB/GB) changed in both places, Web dashboard and Ubuntu One control panel on Windows 7, but I can't find the file on PC. "File sync in progress" hangs on the U1 control panel on windows for indefinite time. If I keep any file in the U1 synced folder, that's not available on the PC and the total amount of file size isn't changed anywhere. "File sync in progress" dialogue is always there, since the starting of the PC. User using the PC with administrative previlage. Hope this problem will be solved quickly.

But in tower of defense game my problem is, there is a tower which slow down the movement of the enemy. • Can my machine run Ubuntu( kubuntu | xubuntu | mint ) 12.04 WELL?

- by Steve
I have a 9 year old computer packing the hardware listed below. My question is, can I run 12.04 ( Ubuntu, Kubuntu, MINT or Xubuntu ) WELL? I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and I upgraded to 12.04 by going through each release via the update manager: 11.04 - 11.10 -12.04 During the installation process for 12.04 I saw an error message that there was an error installing and setting up part of the kernel. Later, when I tried installing a package in synaptic, I got another error message mentioning the kernel. When I rebooted, I got told somehting about my video and graphics was not configured properly and that I would have to do it manually ( like I know ). It gave me the option to enter the system in low graphics mode, but it just hanged. I had an old livecd of Xubuntu 10.10 around so I used that to get into my computer and copy data over to an external hard drive. I think tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 from the livecd, with the option "download updates" checked. The install process moved along a bit, then halted for about 5 hours. I rebooted my machine and tried the Xubuntu 10.10 installer WITHOUT the option to "download updates". The install completed in about 15 minutes. So, all of that is making me wonder if there is someting about 12.04 that does not like my hardware. I'm willing to try again, but only if I know I will not have to spend hours just to get to an error message and a hosed up system like I did last night. I also think I have a lot more RAM than is being reported in the output below. I had extra ram installed last year. I'm not good with the command line readouts, but there seems like there should be a lot more. I wasn't thrilled with Unity. I am willing to try Kubuntu 12.04. Will I run into the same problems? What is the highest version of a *ubuntu can I upgrade to? The Demo Images are virtual machines that run in VirtualBox.   They contain a fully functioning PeopleSoft environment, including the database, PeopleTools, and the application.  These images can be loaded onto nearly any sized machine that meets the specs outlined in the documentation, including a powerful desktop machine.     The image allows you to very quickly deploy a fully functioning PeopleSoft instance that you can use to explore new features and functions or run a conference room pilot. To take advantage these Demo Images: Go to the Demo Images Home Page (Doc id 1552548.1) on My Oracle Support. Use the " Demo Image Quick Start Guide" and additional documentation links on that page to download and install your desired Demo Image. New Demo Images are posted for each product area approximately every 10 weeks, available shortly after the corresponding patching image. When installed, use the Demo Image to explore the desired features and capabilities. Important Notes: - It is not required to use the Demo Images to evaluate features and functions – any 9.2 instance will support this. We recommend use of the Demo Images because the setup and configuration is dramatically faster than doing a traditional PeopleSoft install. - For those looking to explore new features and capabilities on PeopleSoft 9.1 releases, we have provided virtual machine images using the Oracle Virtual Machine technology. Details and links are available in Oracle’s PeopleSoft Virtualization Products page (Doc id 1538142.1). /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman";}

• Who could ask for more with LESS CSS? (Part 1 of 3–Features)

- by ToStringTheory
It wasn’t very long ago that I first began to get into CSS precompilers such as SASS (Syntactically Awesome Stylesheets) and LESS (The Dynamic Stylesheet Language) and I had been hooked on the idea since. When I finally had a new project come up, I leapt at the opportunity to try out one of these languages. Introduction To be honest, I was hesitant at first to add either framework as I didn’t really know much more than what I had read on their homepages, and I didn’t like the idea of adding too much complexity to a project - I couldn’t guarantee I would be the only person to support it in the future. Thankfully, both of these languages just add things into CSS. You don’t HAVE to know LESS or SASS to do anything, you can still do your old school CSS, and your output will be the same. However, when you want to start doing more advanced things such as variables, mixins, and color functions, the functionality is all there for you to utilize. From what I had read, SASS has a few more features than LESS, which is why I initially tried to figure out how to incorporate it into a MVC 4 project. However, through my research, I couldn’t find a way to accomplish this without including some bit of the Ruby on Rails framework on the computer running it, and I hated the fact that I had to do that. Besides SASS, there is little chance of me getting into the RoR framework, at least in the next couple years. So in the end, I settled with using LESS. Features So, what can LESS (or SASS) do for you? There are several reasons I have come to love it in the past few weeks. 1 – Constants Using LESS, you can finally declare a constant and use its value across an entire CSS file. The case that most people would be familiar with is colors. Wanting to declare one or two color variables that comprise the theme of the site, and not have to retype out their specific hex code each time, but rather a variable name. What’s great about this is that if you end up having to change it, you only have to change it in one place. An important thing to note is that you aren’t limited to creating constants just for colors, but for strings and measurements as well. 2 – Inheritance This is a cool feature in my mind for simplicity and organization. Both LESS and SASS allow you to place selectors within other selectors, and when it is compiled, the languages will break the rules out as necessary and keep the inheritance chain you created in the selectors. Example LESS Code: #header { h1 { font-size: 26px; font-weight: bold; } p { font-size: 12px; a { text-decoration: none; &:hover { border-width: 1px } } } } Example Compiled CSS: #header h1 { font-size: 26px; font-weight: bold; } #header p { font-size: 12px; } #header p a { text-decoration: none; } #header p a:hover { border-width: 1px; } 3 - Mixins Mixins are where languages like this really shine. The ability to mixin other definitions setup a parametric mixin. There is really a lot of content in this area, so I would suggest looking at http://lesscss.org for more information. One of the things I would suggest if you do begin to use LESS is to also grab the mixins.less file from the Twitter Bootstrap project. This file already has a bunch of predefined mixins for things like border-radius with all of the browser specific prefixes. This alone is of great use! 4 – Color Functions This is the last thing I wanted to point out as my final post in this series will be utilizing these functions in a more drawn out manner. Both LESS and SASS provide functions for getting information from a color (R,G,B,H,S,L). Using these, it is easy to define a primary color, and then darken or lighten it a little for your needs. Example: Example LESS Code: @base-color: #111; @red: #842210; #footer { color: (@base-color + #003300); border-left: 2px; border-right: 2px; border-color: desaturate(@red, 10%); } Example Compiled CSS: #footer { color: #114411; border-left: 2px; border-right: 2px; border-color: #7d2717; } I have found that these can be very useful and powerful when constructing a site theme. Conclusion I came across LESS and SASS when looking for the best way to implement some type of CSS variables for colors, because I hated having to do a Find and Replace in all of the files using the colors, and in some instances, you couldn’t just find/replace because of the color choices interfering with other colors (color to replace of #000, yet come colors existed like #0002bc). So in many cases I would end up having to do a Find and manually check each one. In my next post, I am going to cover how I’ve come to set up these items and the structure for the items in the project, as well as the conventions that I have come to start using. In the final post in the series, I will cover a neat little side project I built in LESS dealing with colors!
