    I can have a table and function defined as: CREATE TABLE mytable ( mycol integer ); INSERT INTO mytable VALUES (1); CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol = l_myvar; RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; In this case l_myvar acts as a bind variable for the value passed when I call: SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); and returns the row where mycol = 1 If I redefine the function as: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (l_myvar); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; SELECT * FROM myfunction(1); still returns the row where mycol = 1 However, if I now change the function definition to allow me to pass an integer array and try to this array in the IN clause, I get an error: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myfunction (l_myvar integer[]) RETURNS mytable AS $$ DECLARE l_myrow mytable; BEGIN SELECT * INTO l_myrow FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); RETURN l_myrow; END; $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; Analysis reveals that although: SELECT array_to_string(ARRAY[1, 2], ','); returns 1,2 as expected SELECT * FROM myfunction(ARRAY[1, 2]); returns the error operator does not exist: integer = text at the line: WHERE mycol IN (array_to_string(l_myvar, ',')); If I execute: SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE mycol IN (1,2); I get the expected result. Given that array_to_string(l_myvar, ',') evaluates to 1,2 as shown, why arent these statements equivalent. From the error message it is something to do with datatypes, but doesnt the IN(variable) construct appear to be behaving differently from the = variable construct? What are the rules here? I know that I could build a statement to EXECUTE, treating everything as a string, to achieve what I want to do, so I am not looking for that as a solution. I do want to understand though what is going on in this example. Is there a modification to this approach to make it work, the particular example being to pass in an array of values to build a dynamic IN clause without resorting to EXECUTE? Something like: SELECT * FROM table WHERE id IN CASE WHEN @param THEN (1,2,4,5,8) ELSE (9,7,3) END I've tried all combination of moving the IN, CASE etc around that I can think of. Is this (or something like it) possible?

  • Take data from an XML file and put it into a MySQL database

    Hi Guys, I'm looking to construct a script that would go through an XML file. Would find specific tags in it, put them in a table and fill the table with specific tags within them. I'm using MySQL 5.1 so loadXML isn't an option and I think that ExtractData() method wont be much use either.. but I don't really know. What would be the best way to go about this?

    Ok, so I was comparing some stuff in my own DSL to Ruby. One construct they both support is this x=["key" => "value"] Knowing the difference between arrays and hashes, I would think this to be illegal, but the result in Ruby is [{"key" => "value"}] Why is this? And with this kinda syntax why can't you do x=("key" => "value") Why is an array a special case for implicitly created hashes?

  • Does rails do a rollback if I use begin...rescue?

    I'd like to add a begin...rescue block to one of my controllers create method, in order to log better info and construct the correct error message to return to the client. Does the rescue in any way 'interrupt' the rollback process? I'm assuming rails automatically does a rollback. When does it happen? Has it already happened by the time I get in the rescue clause? I'm using mySQL on Dreamhost and I think they use innoDB.

    Python offers an optional else clause in loop statements, which is executed if and only if the loop is not terminated by a break. For an interesting discussion about this neglected commodity, see this question. Here, I just wanted to know: if the very concept of this loop-else construct originates from another language (either theoretical or actually implemented), conversely, if it was taken up in any newer language. May be I should ask the former to Guido, but he surely is a too busy guy for such a futile inquiry. ;-)

    Hi, How to properly construct regular expression for "grep" linux program, to find all email in, say /etc directory ? Currently, my script is following: grep -srhw "[[:alnum:]]*@[[:alnum:]]*" /etc It working OK - a see some of the emails, but when i modify it, to catch the one-or-more charactes before- and after the "@" sign ... grep -srhw "[[:alnum:]]+@[[:alnum:]]+" /etc .. it stops working at all Also, it does't catches emails of form "[email protected]" Help !

  • I've heard that LaTeX is Turing complete. Are there any programs written in LaTeX?

    It's possible to do interesting things with what would ordinarily be thought of as typesetting languages. For example, you can construct the Mandelbrot set using postscript. It is suggested in this MathOverflow question that LaTeX may be Turing-complete. This implies the ability to write arbitrary programs (although it may not be easy!). Does anyone know of any concrete example of such a program in LaTeX, which does something highly unusual with the language?

So I want a type "Length" that behaves just like float -- except I'm going to make it's constructor explicit, so I have to explicitly construct Length objects (rather than have random conversions flying around). Basically, I'm going into the type-a-lot camp.

I have a method that returns a string array of all the rows in the table that I want to make into an enumerated type. Is there any way to construct an enum with an array?
