• WMIC returns error when querying product

  I'm trying to automate the installation of an MSI on my server, however before the installation can go ahead I need to uninstall the previous version from the server. Searching on the internet I've found that WMIC is the tool required but there seems to be a problem with the setup of WMI on the server. Running the following command gives errors: command promptwmic then inside the tool /trace:on product get name This returns a long string of successes and one failure: FAIL: IEnumWbemClassObject->Next(WBEM_INFINITE, 1, -, -) Line: 396 File: d:\nt\admin\wmi\wbem\tools\wmic\execengine.cpp Node - ENTECHORELDEV ERROR: Code = 0x80041010 Description = The specified class is not valid. • Does SpinRite do what it claims to do?

  I don't have any real (i.e. professional) experience with Steve Gibson's SpinRite so I'd like to put this to the SF community. Does SpinRite actually do what it claims? Is it a good product to use? With a proper backup solution and RAID fault tolerance, I've never found need for it, but I'm curious. There seems to be some conflicting messages regarding it, and no hard data to be found either way. On one hand, I've heard many home users claim it helped them, but I've heard home users say a lot of things -- most of the time they don't have the knowledge or experience to accurately describe what really happened. On the other hand, Steve's own description and documentation don't give me a warm fuzzy about it either. So what is the truth of the matter? Would you use it?

• When my printer fails to print with only "printer error" as the message, how can I find details?

  Setup: Dell Latitude D620 in the docking station HP color laserjet 2550L Parallel cable Sometimes when I undock (and I do suspend before undocking and docking), when I reattach, the printer will not print. It simply says "error", with no description. Killing and restarting the spooler will not help, but rebooting will. There is nothing in the system event logs, nor does the print spooler window provide any details other than "error" My question is, when there is an error, is there any way to find out what is causing it to get stuck, so that I can "unstuck" it instead of rebooting?

• How to make TimeMachine back up contents of any path or mounted volume

  I keep different types of data in different encrypted sparsebundle images (say, one for each client) which automatically mount upon login but can't be opened by anybody other than myself. So, after login I have a number of virtual volumes in /Volumes/ which keeps my client data both secure and organized. How do I include data inside these virtual Volumes in TimeMachine's backups, or data residing in any path on any partition/volume? I found a promising solution description at blog.eurocomp.info involving editing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist but all I can get TimeMachine to do is backing up the sparsebundle files themselves. I want it to back up the files inside the mounted image, though - something like adding /Volumes/Client_abc/ to TimeMachine's search path. Please do not redirect my to this previous question as it doesn't solve the problem at all. Please also refrain from telling me why you think I should not want this answer as that will not solve anything either. Please lastly don't say "it can't be done" unless you can technically prove that claim.

• How do I setup a systemd service to be started by a non root user as a user daemon?

  I just finished the install and setup process of systemd on my arch-linux system (2012.09.07). I uninstalled initscripts (and removed the configuration files). What I want to do is create a service that can be started and stopped by a non-root user. The service is to start a detached screen session running rtorrent. However I want every user on the system who has set this service to start (enabled) to have a particular instance started for them specifically. How would one go about doing this? I remember reading that systemd supports user instances of services, however I have been unable to find any information on how to set this up, or whether it relates to what I am looking for.   I want to achieve following: (Note I'd like to get this done first of all with Win7 as both host and vm OS) Install Windows 7/xp/Windows 8 VM on Windows 7/Windows 8 host machine Configure it so that I can connect to it via remote desktop. This is because I use a screen reader software and audio output directly from VMs is not highly responsive. My software has a feature that it can connect to its copy on the remote machine (during rdp session) and then start receiving the text description which it translates into audio on the client (host in this case) machine. I want to know: Which VM software can let me do this – VMWare/Ms Virtual PC or VirtualBox If it is possible with every VM software, could you give an example of how to do this with anyone of these 3? Specifically, I know how to install Windows on VM (on both VMWare/Virtual PC), but don't really know how to configure a network such that I can remote into that VM from host OS. Hope it clarifies what I'm trying to achieve.

  I am working on an MVC project in Visual Studio 2010 with .NET Framework 4.0 + MVC2 and everything works if I set the target framework to .NET 4.0. However, my host does not offer .NET 4.0 in order to deploy the site I need to get it working on .NET 3.5. I tried converting it to ASP.NET 3.5 and everything builds just fine except now when I try to load the homepage, I get a 404 Error saying: The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. • How to troubleshoot a service failure?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

  I have a stationary computer with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. The primary (SSD) hard drive seems to have stopped working completely, it is not even visible in BIOS. The computer has a secondary hard drive (non-SSD, NTFS, 2TB). I have had Windows backup running and saving backups to that secondary drive. I am planning to buy a new SSD drive to replace the faulty one. I want to restore the backup to this new SSD drive. What is the most straightforward way to do this? A step-by-step description would be greatly appreciated. Further information: I have a Windows install DVD and the computer has a DVD-drive. The secondary drive is not bootable, so I cannot currently access it. The new SSD drive will probably not be identical to the original, so it might need different drivers

  I'm new to Chef and I think I'm missing something in reading the docs. I want to create servers using knife server create (options) but can't seem to find fully complete documentation on the options. Specifically, how do I find a mapping of server flavors to whatever knife is looking for? Given the official wiki entry for "Launch Cloud Instances with Knife," the following is an example server creation on Rackspace: knife rackspace server create 'role[webserver]' --server-name server01 --image 49 --flavor 2 Likewise, on the Knife Man Page, there are commands for EC2 server images (using --d --distro DISTRO) and for Slicehost servers (using -f --flavor FLAVOR) However, what none of the documentation I've found describes is how to translate what I want to build on Rackspace ("I want Ubuntu 10.04 LTS") to what the integer entry that knife is seeking. It strikes me that, given the lack of a description in the documentation for how to find the flavor, this should be obvious. Thus, I think I'm missing something.

• Starting Redmine at boot using upstart on Ubuntu

  So after installing redmine from the repositories on Ubuntu 12.04, i've tried to create an upstart script (see below) so it would start up at boot time. While service redmine start does start redmine, it does not start automatically when booting. Also when i run service redmine stop it does stop redmine but simply hangs until i press ctrl+c Also, after stopping starting it again does not work (Also just hangs). From all the upstart examples and tutorials i have seen this should work, so i guess i'm overlooking something. • What is "2LUN" mode in connection with RAID?

  I've came across RAID products that also list JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode and 2LUN mode. What the heck is 2LUN mode? I could not find a description; the closest thing seems to be LUN 'logical unit number' but I don't get the 2LUN thing. UPDATE 1 This is what Wikipedia has to say about JBOD: JBOD (derived from "just a bunch of disks"): an architecture involving multiple hard drives, while making them accessible either as independent hard drives, or as a combined (spanned) single logical volume with no actual RAID functionality. So JBOD can actually mean two different (albeit related) things. Answer of Guest says 2LUN means no spanning. Does this suggest that 2LUN would simply mean the JBOD-variant with no span?

• Firefox 4 is displaying all text as "bold"

  I installed Firefox 4 this morning excited to checkout some of the new HTML 5 features that have been implemented and found that all text was displayed in a bold font. Here is the comparison with what Firefox 4 is displaying on my machine and Chrome. It is getting really annoying. So far I've... Emptied the cache/history/etc. Re-installed the various core fonts (Arial, Courier, Times New Roman, etc.) Checked the font defaults in FF4. The interesting part to me is that I had FF3.6x on this machine with no problems whatsoever and now this. Any ideas? System Description Windows 7 (x64) Update I just found out that this is happening in IE9 (final) as well. Must be something with the system fonts. Like I said before, this wasn't happening pre-FF4.

  Hello, I have to connect an (ADO) application running on a standalone Windows 2003 R2 server to a SQL 2008 R2 database that is a member of the domain. I have setup an SQL authentication account for this and hard-coded the password into the connection string but I wonder if it wouldn't be possible to use certificate-based authentication for this instead. I haven't been able to find any documentation regarding this apparently new functionality of SQL 2008 R2 anywhere. Could someone kindly point me at some good documentation ? • Anyone interested in obtaining a cable list from a visio Diagram? [closed]

Just wondering if anyone had to deal with the following problem - you have to install over say a 100 network elements and servers - cabling is done via contractors, so you need to provide them with an accurate, error-free cable list - your inputs are a set of detailed, port by port, visio diagrams. Prb is to obtain the cable list and get the cabling started while you're busy crafting the switch/routers configs. I coded a Visio plugin, which I plan to release under the GNU license, that returns a cable list from a diagram, and tested it on intermediate size infrastructure, 2K+ cables. It works well. The tool needs a little work to be user friendly, so before getting started, I wanted to know if that was worth the effort. Questions are welcomed, let me know -A PS: the tool is targeted for those who need a port by port description of their network, in the form Source/slot/port/Destination/slot/port.
