• how to escape white space in bash loop list

- by MCS
I have a bash shell script that loops through all child directories (but not files) of a certain directory. The problem is that some of the directory names contain spaces. Here are the contents of my test directory: $ls -F test Baltimore/ Cherry Hill/ Edison/ New York City/ Philadelphia/ cities.txt And the code that loops through the directories: for f in `find test/* -type d`; do echo $f done Here's the output: test/Baltimore test/Cherry Hill test/Edison test/New York City test/Philadelphia Cherry Hill and New York City are treated as 2 or 3 separate entries. I tried quoting the filenames, like so: for f in `find test/* -type d | sed -e 's/^/"/' | sed -e 's/$/"/'`; do echo $f done but to no avail. There's got to be a simple way to do this. Any ideas? The answers below are great. But to make this more complicated - I don't always want to use the directories listed in my test directory. Sometimes I want to pass in the directory names as command-line parameters instead. I took Charles' suggestion of setting the IFS and came up with the following: dirlist="${@}" ( [[ -z "$dirlist" ]] && dirlist=`find test -mindepth 1 -type d` && IFS=$'
' for d in $dirlist; do echo $d done ) and this works just fine unless there are spaces in the command line arguments (even if those arguments are quoted). For example, calling the script like this: test.sh "Cherry Hill" "New York City" produces the following output: Cherry Hill New York City Again, I know there must be a way to do this - I just don't know what it is...

• Code Chess: Fibonacci Sequence

- by SLaks
Building upon the proven success of Code Golf, I would like to introduce Code Chess. Unlike Code Golf, which strives for concision, Code Chess will strive for cleverness. Can you create a clever or unexpected Fibonacci generator? Your code must print or return either the nth Fibonacci number or the first n Fibonacci numbers.

• SharpZip escape filename

- by mr.moses
I'm using SharpZipLib to create a zip file with an html page and images. If the html file has a / in the name, it creates a folder (which messes up the image paths). Example: If the html file should be named Web/Design.html the zip file will contain a Web folder with a Design.html file in it. I've tried escaping / by replacing / with // or / but nothing has worked so far.

• jQuery sequence and function call problem

- by Jonas
Hi everyone, I'm very new to jquery and programming in general but I'm still trying to achieve something here. I use Fullcalendar to allow the users of my web application to insert an event in the database. The click on a day, view changes to agendaDay, then on a time of the day, and a dialog popup opens with a form. I am trying to combine validate (pre-jquery.1.4), jquery.form to post the form without page refresh The script calendar.php, included in several pages, defines the fullcalendar object and displays it in a div: $(document).ready(function() { function EventLoad() { $("#addEvent").validate({ rules: { calendar_title: "required", calendar_url: { required: false, maxlength: 100, url: true } }, messages: { calendar_title: "Title required", calendar_url: "Invalid URL format" }, success: function() { $('#addEvent').submit(function() { var options = { success: function() { $('#eventDialog').dialog('close'); $('#calendar').fullCalendar( 'refetchEvents' ); } }; // submit the form $(this).ajaxSubmit(options); // return false to prevent normal browser submit and page navigation return false; }); } }); } $('#calendar').fullCalendar({ header: { left: 'prev, next today', center: 'title', right: 'month, agendaWeek, agendaDay' }, theme: true, firstDay: 1, editable: false, events: "json-events.php?list=1&<?php echo $events_list; ?>", <?php if($_GET['page'] == 'home') echo "defaultView: 'agendaWeek',"; ?> eventClick: function(event) { if (event.url) { window.open(event.url); return false; } }, dayClick: function(date, allDay, jsEvent, view) { if (view.name == 'month') { $('#calendar').fullCalendar( 'changeView', 'agendaDay').fullCalendar( 'gotoDate', date ); }else{ if(allDay) { var timeStamp = $.fullCalendar.formatDate( date, 'dddd+dd+MMMM_u'); var $eventDialog = $('
').load("json-events.php?<?php echo $events_list; ?>&new=1&all_day=1&timestamp=" + timeStamp, null, EventLoad).dialog({autoOpen:false,draggable: false, width: 675, modal:true, position:['center',202], resizable: false, title:'Add an Event'}); $eventDialog.dialog('open').attr('id','eventDialog'); } else { var timeStamp = $.fullCalendar.formatDate( date, 'dddd+dd+MMMM_u'); var $eventDialog = $('
').load("json-events.php?<?php echo $events_list; ?>&new=1&all_day=0&timestamp=" + timeStamp, null, EventLoad).dialog({autoOpen:false, draggable: false, width: 675, modal:true, position:['center',202], resizable: false, title:'Add an Event'}); $eventDialog.dialog('open').attr('id','eventDialog');; } } } }); }); The script json-events.php contains the form and also the code to process the data from the submitted form. What happens when I test the whole thing: - first user click on a day, then time of day. Popup opens with time and date indicated on the form. When user submits the form, dialog closes and calendar refreshes its events.... and the event added by the user appears several times (from 4 to up to 11 times!). The form has been processed several times by the receiving php script?! - second user click, the popup opens, user submit empty form. Form is submitted (validate function not triggered) and user redirected to empty page json-events.php (ajaxForm not triggered either) Obviously, my code is wrong (and dirty as well, sorry). Why is the submitted form, submitted several time to receiving script and why is the javascript function EventLoad triggered only once ? Thank you very much for you help. This problem is killing me !

• perl regex escape characters

- by freshWoWer
I have heard perl is a good language at doing regex but i am a bit confused at the characters that requires escaping I tested the code on http://regexlib.com/RETester.aspx and got the result I want //home/dev/abc/code/hello/world.cpp#1 //home/dev/((.*?)/[^/]+).*# Match $1 $2 //home/dev/abc/code/hello/world.cpp# abc/code abc However, I am not quite sure how do i translate this to perl code I tried, //home/dev/\(\(\.\*\?\)/\[\^/\]\+\)\.\*\# and //home/dev/((.*?)/[^/]+).*\# and both failed Don't you think the escaping makes the regex very unreadable? Am i using something wrong?

• Google Chrome: JavaScript associative arrays, evaluated out of sequence

- by Jerry
Ok, so on a web page, I've got a JavaScript object which I'm using as an associative array. This exists statically in a script block when the page loads: var salesWeeks = { "200911" : ["11 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200910" : ["10 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200909" : ["09 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200908" : ["08 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200907" : ["07 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200906" : ["06 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200905" : ["05 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200904" : ["04 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200903" : ["03 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200902" : ["02 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200901" : ["01 / 2009", "Fiscal 2009"], "200852" : ["52 / 2008", "Fiscal 2009"], "200851" : ["51 / 2008", "Fiscal 2009"] }; The order of the key/value pairs is intentional, as I'm turning the object into an HTML select box such as this: == SELECT WEEK == 11 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 10 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 09 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 08 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 07 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 06 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 05 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 04 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 03 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 02 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 01 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 52 / 2008 (Fiscal 2009) 51 / 2008 (Fiscal 2009) ...with code that looks like this (snipped from a function): var arr = []; arr.push( "" + "== SELECT WEEK ==" ); for(var key in salesWeeks) { arr.push( "<option value="" + key + "">" + salesWeeks[key][0] + " (" + salesWeeks[key][1] + ")" + "" ); } arr.push(""); return arr.join(""); This all works fine in IE, FireFox and Opera. However in Chrome, the order comes out all weird: == SELECT WEEK == 52 / 2008 (Fiscal 2009) 08 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 06 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 02 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 07 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 04 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 09 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 03 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 05 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 01 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 10 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 11 / 2009 (Fiscal 2009) 51 / 2008 (Fiscal 2009) NOTE: This order, though weird, does not change on subsequent refreshes. It's always in this order. So, what is Chrome doing? Some optimization in how it processes the loop? In the first place, am I wrong to rely on the order that the key/value pairs are declared in any associative array? I never questioned it before, I just assumed the order would hold because this technique has always worked for me in the other browsers. But I suppose I've never seen it stated anywhere that the order is guaranteed. Maybe it's not? Any insight would be awesome. Thanks.

• How to "escape" a whole String - an SQL query

- by Ankur
When I add a relative path to an SQL query as a String all the \ get removed. I am trying to add the String ("pics"+onlyFile) and as you can see I have escaped the \ character so I don't understand why it is being removed. onlyFile is a variable containing a file name. The value of the "src" variable (the one I am discussing) just before the SQL statement is correct, hence it is something happening when it is added to the SQL query.

• Mysql Real Escape String PHP Function Adding "" to My Field Entry

- by Jascha
Hello, I am submitting a form to my mySql database using PHP. I am sending the form data through the mysql_real_escape_string($content); function. When the entry shows up in my database (checking in myPhpAdmin) all of my double quotes and single quotes are escaped. I'm fairly certain this is a PHP configuration issue? so: $content = 'Hi, my name is Jascha and my "favorite" thing to do is sleep'; mysql_real_escape_string($content); $query = 'INSERT INTO DB...' comes up in my database as: Hi, my name is Jascha and my "favorite" thing to do is sleep Who do I tell what to do? (I cannot access the php.ini). -J

• Counting longest occurence of repeated sequence in Python

- by user248237
What's the easiest way to count the longest consecutive repeat of a certain character in a string? For example, the longest consecutive repeat of "b" in the following string: my_str = "abcdefgfaabbbffbbbbbbfgbb" would be 6, since other consecutive repeats are shorter (3 and 2, respectively.) How can I do this in Python? thanks.

• Regex Pattern for ignoring a custom escape character

- by user1517464
I am trying to find a suitable regex for matching pair of custom characters in an input string. These custom characters are replaced by their corresponding html tags. For e.g. The input string can have underscores in pairs to indicate words in bold. Hence, _Name_ outputs as Name However if there is a genuine underscore in the string, it cannot be replaced by "bold" tags and has to be ignored. The genuine underscore has to be preceded by / (I couldn't find a better character, it could be one more underscore or hyphen or whatever). Any single or paired occurrance of this genuine underscore has to be ignored by regex. So far I could come up with this regex: var pattern = @"(?!/)_(.*?)(?!/)_"; But it fails in below input string: _Tom_Katy/_Richard/_/_Stephan_and many users It outputs as TomKaty/Richard/_/Stephan_and many users Many Thanks in Advance, Pr

• Tell jQuery to ignore clicks during an animation sequence

- by dclowd9901
I'm in the midst of writing a slideShow app (click a button, and you slide through a list of images) for jQuery, but I've run into a little bug where it will respond to the click() request even while an animation is happening. I'm using the animate() function already, so that isn't staving off the additional animation requests. Any way to program around this?

• Sharepoint Designer Workflow with multiple tasks in sequence

- by Triangle Man
I have a multi-step Sharepoint workflow in task list A that starts when a new task is created in that list and creates a task in another list, B. When that task in list B is completed, I would like the workflow in list A to create another task in list C. I am using Sharepoint Designer 2007 to build all of this and at the moment I have this represented by multiple steps. So, step one is to create the task in the other list, and store its ID as a variable. Step 2 is conditional on a value in the task created by step one being marked complete, and it creates a task in the next list, and so on. However, when I run the workflow, it marks its status as complete as soon as the item in the first list is completed, and does not go on to create the task outlined in Step 2 of the workflow. I would like to know why the workflow is marking itself complete at the end of step one, and why the subsequent steps are not executed. Thanks in advance for your help.

• Escaping escape Characters

- by Alix Axel
I'm trying to mimic the json_encode bitmask flags implemented in PHP 5.3.0, here is the string I have: $s = addslashes('O\'Rei"lly'); // O\'Rei"lly Doing json_encode($str, JSON_HEX_APOS | JSON_HEX_QUOT) outputs the following: "O'Rei"lly" And I'm currently doing this in PHP versions older than 5.3.0: str_replace(array('"', "\\'"), array('"', '''), json_encode($s)) or str_replace(array('"', '\\\''), array('"', '''), json_encode($s)) Which correctly outputs the same result: "O'Rei"lly" I'm having trouble understanding why do I need to replace single quotes ('\\\'' or even "\\'" [surrounding quotes excluded]) with ''' and not just '''.

• Add new row in a databound form with a Oracle Sequence as the primary key

- by Ranhiru
I am connecting C# with Oracle 11g. I have a DataTable which i fill using an Oracle Data Adapter. OracleDataAdapter da; DataTable dt = new DataTable(); da = new OracleDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM Author", con); da.Fill(dt); I have few text boxes that I have databound to various rows in the data table. txtAuthorID.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "AUTHORID"); txtFirstName.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "FIRSTNAME"); txtLastName.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "LASTNAME"); txtAddress.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "ADDRESS"); txtTelephone.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "TELEPHONE"); txtEmailAddress.DataBindings.Add("Text", dt, "EMAIL"); I also have a DataGridView below the Text Boxes, showing the contents of the DataTable. dgvAuthor.DataSource = dt; Now when I want to add a new row, i do bm.AddNew(); where bm is defined in Form_Load as BindingManagerBase bm; bm = this.BindingContext[dt]; And when the save button is clicked after all the information is entered and validated, i do this.BindingContext[dt].EndCurrentEdit(); try { da.Update(dt); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } However the problem comes where when I usually enter a row to the database (using SQL Plus) , I use a my_pk_sequence.nextval for the primary key. But how do i specify that when i add a new row in this method? I catch this exception ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("SYSMAN".AUTHOR.AUTHORID") which is obvious because nothing was specified for the primary key. How do get around this? Thanx a lot in advance :)

• msysgit git-am can't apply it's own git format-patch sequence

- by Andrian Nord
I'm using msysgit git on windows to operate on central svn repository. I'm using git as I want to have it's awesome little local branches for everything and rebasing on each other. I also need to update from central repo often, so using separate svn/git is not an option. Problem is - git svn --help (man page) says that it is not a good idea to use git merge into master branch (which is set to track from svn's trunk) from local branches, as this will ruin the party and git svn dcommit would not work anymore. I know that it's not exactly true and you may use git merge if you are merging from branch which was properly rebased on master prior merge, but I'm trying to make it safer and actually use git format-patch and git am. We are using code review, so I'm making patches anyway. I also knew about git cherry-pick, but I want to just git am /reviewed/patches/dir/* without actually recalling what commits was corresponding to this patches (without reading patches, that is). So, what's wrong with git svn and git am? It's simple - git am for a few very hard points is doing CRLF into LF conversion for patches supplied (git-mailsplit is doing this, to be precise), if not rebasing. git format-patch is also producing proper (LF-ended) patches. As my repo is mostly CRLF (and it should remain so), patches are, obviously, failing due to wrong EOL. Converting diffs to CRLF and somehow hacking git am to prevent it from conversion is not working, too. It will fail if any file was removed or deleted - git apply will complain about expected /dev/null (but he got /dev/null^M). And if I'm applying it with git am --ignore-space-change --ignore-whitespace that it will commit LF endings straight to the index, which is also weird. I don't know if it will preserve over commiting into svn (via git svn dcommit) and checking it out and I don't want to try out. Of course, it's still possible to try hacking around patches to convert only actual diffs, but this is too much hacks for simple task. So, I wonder, is there really no established way to produce patches and apply them to the same repo on the same system? It just feels weird that msysgit can't apply it's own patches.

• Correct sequence of actions when using Markdown & MySQL?

- by Andrew Heath
I want my users to be able to write an article in Markdown, have it stored in the MySQL database (with the option to edit it in the future), and displayed for other users. In practice, this is my understanding of how it works: INPUT user input via HTML form using Markdown syntax $queryInput = mysql_real_escape_string($userInput); insert sanitized string into database OUTPUT query field from database $output = Markdown($queryResult); display $output Is that it? Does PHP Markdown preclude the need for htmlspecialchars or Pure HTML ? Thanks!
