• Windows 2003 Storage Server Hanging on Large File Transfers

  In one of our offices we have a Dell PowerVault 745N NAS device which acts as the main file server. Its running 32bit Windows 2003 Storage Server SP2 with 3GB RAM. The server holds around 60 users HOME folders, which are mapped via AD. The office clients are a mix of XP SP3, Vista and Windows 7. Occasionally the server will completely hang when transferring large files. When the hang happens the console becomes unresponsive with only the mouse active and blank wallpaper. Sometimes stopping the copy frees the server, sometimes not. The hanging can last around 20 minutes. During this time other servers also become unresponsive with blank wallpaper at the console. If you do manage to get onto another server the taskbar and run commands are unresponsive. This also transcends to the client computers sometimes with explorer crashing. I'm guessing this is due to the HOME folder mapping. Eventually the NAS server with free up and everything will be back to normal. The server is configured as follows: PERC 4/DC DATA 2 - 12 SCSI HDD - RAID5 SHADOWCOPY 2 SCSI HDD - RAID1 CERC SATA DATA 11 4 SATA HDD - RAID5 OS 4 SATA HDD - RAID5 All the drivers and firmware is up to date. I've been through all the diagnostics with Dell and the hardware has come up clean including full HDD tests on the arrays. The server has NOD32 installed as the AV, but the hanging happens when it is uninstalled. There are no errors in the event log when this happens and we don't have any errors logged on any of our ProCurve switches. DNS is fine on the domain and AD from what I can tell is running happily. There are no DFS or NFS shares setup either. All the shares are standard Windows. I've unchecked the allow the computer to turn off this device to save power box under Power Management on the NIC. "Set Link Speed and Duplex to Auto-negotiate 1000 " Increased Receive Descriptors buffer from 256 to 352 (reserves more CPU resource for handling data) I've run network traces using network monitor and have found the following: 417 8.078125 {SMB:192, NbtSS:25, TCP:24, IPv4:23} 192.168.2.244 192.168.5.35 SMB SMB:R; Nt Create Andx - NT Status: System - Error, Code = (52) STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND I've tried different cabling; NICs and switch ports all with the same result. Transferring files from other servers on the domain is fine. All I haven't done is run CHKDSK on the drives to look for any file system errors. On the Vista clients I have also run netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled with no result. Could it be that the server has a faulty drive or that the I/O is too much for it to handle? Any ideas why would the hang cause issues with the other servers on the LAN? Many Thanks.

  O.K I am trying to do the following very simple command and it is failing as follows... mv '/home/admin/Downloads/folder1' '/home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/TV/folder1/' mv: cannot move `/home/admin/Downloads/folder1' to a subdirectory of itself, `/home/admin/MyLibrary/MyVideos/TV/folder1/' The destination is NOT a subfolder of the source - why is it giving me this error?? Linux version is a custom version of Red Hat on a NAS box. Thanks

• Copying between 2 network devices

  My network has 3 devices - 1 PC and 2 other network devices (which could be PC, NAS, external hard drive etc) If I want to copy data from one network device to another network device from my PC (using the copy and paste method (i.e right click a file, select copy and then right click into the destination folder and click paste) and therefore not using any tools that could be built into the network devices for such a transaction), does the data get routed via my PC or use my systems resources?

• Different Ip adress range from provider

  I have different ip-range on the network, the dhcp is from the bordaband that says it uses different iprange as balancednetwork. however this causes issue as my nas and other computer gets the otner iprange of 84 and some computer gets iprange start at 94.254. i have use netgear switches gs108v2 but still get the issue with different ip adress. would apriciate answer on how i can get all devies on the same ip-range thanks

• Protecting Backups from Viruses

  Currently we are using ReadyNAS RN102 by NETGEAR to hold all our images from all our machines. My question is can viruses expand from the machines and infect the NAS drive and the backups? We are using AOMEI Backupper. EDIT: Basically, I want to keep my clean backups clean. I keep Daily, Weekly, Monthly achievable backups, my worry is a virus might attempt or try to infect these backups making using them worthless.

• xtreamer doesn't see Window 7 shares

  Weird situation after reinstalling Windows 7 on my PC. Suddenly the xTreamer (media streamer) that's connected to the same LAN doesn't see shares by my PC. Other PCs (and even a MacBook) on the same network can access these shares just fine. And the xTreamer is capable of seeing other shares in the network (e.g. by some other NAS server I have). It can't be permissions/firewall because the Mac does connect to the shares... I'm stumped. Ideas?

• Sharing files between multiple sites using only desktop software

  Our organisation has three sites; a head office, where the master copies of company files are stored, plus two branch offices using only workstations and a NAS or two. Currently we're talking about <10GB. At the main office, we have no admin access to the file server, as this is entirely controlled by the larger institution where we are located. For the same reason, we have no VPN remote access to this network. Instead, we simply have access to a network share using over a Novell LAN. Question: how can we share files between offices in way that minimises latency, i.e. that gives us a mirror of the main network share at each site? (There is little likelihood of concurrent editing, and we can live with the odd file conflict now and again). Up to now branch office staff have had to use GotoMyPC-type solutions to remotely access files held at the main office. Or email. I was hoping to use Google Drive on a dedicated workstation at each office to sync the contents of the network share (head office) or NAS (branch offices) via the cloud, but at my last attempt (29 Jun '12), the Google Drive installer would not allow me to designate the remote network share as the "target" folder. (I chose Google Drive over Drobbox et al. as we already use GMail for corporate mail) The next idea was to use a designated workstation at head office to mirror the network share to a local drive, then use Google Drive to push that to the cloud. This seems a step too far. Nor do I have any good ideas about how to achieve this network/local mirroring, as we can't, for example, install the rsync daemon on the server. I do not want to use Google Drive locally on each workstation as this will inconvenience users, and more importantly, move files off the backed-up, well-maintained (UPS, RAID etc) network share at head office. Our budget is only in the £100's. Should we perhaps just ditch the head office server and use something like JungleDisk? At least this presents the user with what appears to be a mapped drive.

• How can I direct rsync output / log to the remote server?

  I am able to output rsync logs on the client machine using --log-file=FILE but I want the output to be sent to the server instead. The client is a W7 machine (cygwin) and the server a Linux NAS. This is the command I use which successfully logs the file on the client. • Oracle WebCenter: uma nova vis&atilde;o para os Portais

  O conceito de “Portal” existe há muito tempo, mas está sempre mudando. Afinal de contas, o que é um portal? Nos primórdios da internet, o termo “portal” era utilizado para sites que guardavam muitas páginas (ou seja, muita informação). “Portal de notícias” era um termo comum, embora estes “portais” não passassem de um conjunto de páginas estáticas, que basicamente serviam conteúdo aos usuários. Com a evolução da tecnologia, os web sites passaram a ficar mais dinâmicos, permitindo uma interação maior do usuário. Sites de comunidades sociais são o melhor exemplo disso. Neste momento, o “portal” passou a ser não apenas um grupo de páginas, mas um conjunto de serviços e recursos dinâmicos, como a possibilidade de publicar fotos e vídeos, e compartilhar este conteúdo com amigos on-line. Aqui temos o que podemos chamar de “Portais Sociais”. Ao mesmo tempo, dentro das empresas, outra mudança estava acontecendo: a criação de padrões de comunicação entre aplicativos, sendo o mais famoso destes padrões a tecnologia de Web Services. Com estes padrões, as aplicações podem trocar informações e facilitar a experiência dos usuários. Desta forma, é possível desenvolver mini-aplicativos (chamados “portlets”), que publicam informações dos sistemas corporativos nas páginas dos portais internos. Estes portlets permitem interações com os sistemas, para permitir que os usuários tenham acesso rápido e fácil às informações. Podemos chamar estes portais de “Portais Transacionais”. Aqui temos 2 pontos que eu gostaria de chamar a atenção: 1 – O desenvolvimento de portlets é necessário porque eu não consigo publicar uma aplicação inteira no portal, normalmente por uma questão de padrões de desenvolvimento. Explicando de uma forma simples, a aplicação não foi feita para rodar dentro de um portal. Portanto, é necessário desenvolvimento adicional para criar mini-aplicativos que replicam (ou melhor, duplicam) a lógica do aplicativo principal, dentro do portal. 2 – Os aplicativos corporativos normalmente não incluem os recursos colaborativos de um portal (por exemplo, fóruns de discussão, lista de contatos com sensores de presença on-line, wikis, tags, etc), simplesmente porque este tipo de recurso normalmente não está disponível de forma “empacotada” para ser utilizada em um aplicativo. Desta forma, se eu quiser que a minha aplicação tenha um fórum de discussão para que os meus clientes conversem com a minha equipe técnica, eu tenho que desenvolver todo o motor do fórum de discussão dentro do meu aplicativo, o que se torna inviável, devido ao custo, tempo e ao fato de que este tipo de recurso normalmente não está no escopo da minha aplicação. O que acaba acontecendo é que os usuários fazem a parte “transacional” dentro do aplicativo, mas acabam utilizando outras interfaces para atender suas demandas de colaboração (neste caso, utilizariam um fórum fora da aplicação para discutir problemas referentes ao aplicativo). O Oracle WebCenter 11g vem para resolver estes dois pontos citados acima. O WebCenter não é simplesmente um novo portal, com alguns recursos interessantes; ele é uma nova forma de se pensar em Portais Corporativos (portais que reúnem os cenários citados acima: conteúdo, social e transacional). O WebCenter 11g é extenso demais para ser descrito em um único post, e nem é a minha intenção entrar no detalhe deste produto agora. Mas podemos definir o WebCenter 11g como sendo 3 “coisas”: - Um framework de desenvolvimento, aonde os recursos que as minhas aplicações irão utilizar (por exemplo, validação de crédito, consulta à estoque, registro de um pedido, etc), são desenvolvidos de forma a serem reutilizados por qualquer outra aplicação ou portlet que seja executado neste framework. Este tipo de componente reutilizável é chamado de “Task Flow”. - Um conjunto de serviços voltados à colaboração, como fóruns, wikis, blogs, tags, links, people connections, busca, bibliotecas de documentos, etc. Todos estes recursos colaborativos também estão disponíveis como Task Flows, desta forma, qualquer aplicação que eu desenvolva pode se beneficiar destes recursos. - Um “Portal”, do ponto de vista tradicional, aonde os usuários podem criar páginas, inserir e compartilhar conteúdo com outros usuários. Este Portal consegue utilizar os recursos desenvolvidos no Framework, garantindo o reuso. A imagem abaixo traz uma visão deste Portal. Clique para ver em tamanho maior. A grande inovação que o WebCenter traz é que a divisão entre “portal” e “aplicação” desaparece: qualquer aplicação agora pode ser desenvolvida com recursos de portal. O meu sistema de CRM, por exemplo, pode ter um fórum de discussão para os clientes. O meu sistema de suporte pode utilizar Wikis para montar FAQs de forma rápida. O sistema financeiro pode incluir uma biblioteca de documentos para que o usuário possa consultar os manuais de procedimento. Portanto, não importa se eu estou desenvolvendo uma “aplicação” ou um “portal”; o que importa é que os meus usuários agora terão em uma única interface as funcionalidades dos aplicativos e os recursos de colaboração. Este conceito, dentro da Oracle, é chamado de “Composite Applications”, e é a base para a próxima geração dos aplicativos Oracle. So, how big can your SharePoint 2010 installation be? There are three kinds of limits you should know about Hard limits that cannot be exceeded by design. Configurable that are, well configurable – but the default values are set for a pretty good reason, so if you need to tweak, plan and understand before you tweak. Soft limits, you can exceed them, but it is not recommended that you do. Before you read any of the limits, read these two important disclaimers - 1. The limit depends on what you’re doing. So, don’t take the below as gospel, the reality depends on your situation. 2. There are many additional considerations in planning your SharePoint solution scalability and performance, besides just the below. • Comunidades de pr&aacute;tica

  Este ano eu comecei a fazer um mestrado em Gestão de Projetos na Uninove, aqui em São Paulo. E um dos temas de pesquisa que irei desenvolver é sobre comunidades de prática. Basicamente, são comunidades criadas pelas pessoas que objetivam a expandir o conhecimento sobre determinado assunto. Um exemplo desse tipo de comunidade seria, por exemplo, os grupos de usuários Java. Essas comunidades podem se desenvolver nas mais variadas formas: dentro de empresas, fora das empresas com profissionais de diversas companhias, dentro de empresas com colaboração com usuários de outras empresas. Atualmente, muitos desses grupos acabam usando recursos oferecidos na Internet (grupos, fóruns, emails) para se comunicarem. Eu, por exemplo, cuidei de um grupo desses, por cerca de um ano, na época em que trabalhei na IBM. Quem tiver conhecimento de comunidades desse tipo, e quiser colaborar com meu estudo, entre em contato. Tenho especial interesse em coletar experiências desses grupos, principalmente ajudando a desenvolver o conhecimento dentro das empresas.

• Disable automount in Nautilus

  I have added my mount devices in /etc/fstab and they get correctly mounted (2nd partition with ntfs and nas-share with nfs). I have also disabled automount in Nautilus preferences by using dconf-editor (following this post): user@server:~$ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.media-handling org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount false org.gnome.desktop.media-handling automount-open false org.gnome.desktop.media-handling autorun-never false Now i see every mount device twice in Nautilus (the entry in fstab already mounted). When clicking on the other entry i get the eligible message mount.nfs: /media/nas_share is busy or already mounted How i can i disable the appearente of those devices in Nautilus? EDIT Regarding automount: I have only one line in /etc/auto.master: +auto.master

• How to move files over samba share with gnomevfs cli

  Ok I am in the process of backing up my film collection to a NAS and I wanted to automate this as much as possible as I have to work at the same time. I am trying to setup a daily dump of ISO's ready to be converted overnight. I would like to do this as a cron job using gnomevfs. I have been able to connect and do an ls command successfully with gnomevfs-ls smb://user:WORKGROUP:password@media-centre/videos/ but I am having trouble setting up a mv command from a local folder to the same shared folder keep getting the Usage: gnomevfs-mv <from> <to> quote which isn't particularly informative ;) any ideas?

• Steps to diagnose SNU5600 disconnection problem

  I have a Philips SNU5600 WiFi dongle plugged into two machines (ie I have two SNU5600 dongles, one in each machine). One machine is running 10.10 and the other is running Linux Mint. The dongles work absolutely fine, except if I do a lot of file transfers to a NAS attached to the wireless router. After a while the connection to the router will go. To get the connection back I either need to run sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart or I need to unplug and plug in again the dongle. Otherwise the dongle works fine (web browsing, streaming, etc). Output of lsusb: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0471:1236 Philips (or NXP) SNU5600 802.11bg Output of lsusb -v at http://pastebin.com/dXYKkF01 What steps should I take next to resolve this? Is it a known problem? Could it be the router? It is a 3Com "OfficeConnect Wireless 11g Cable/DSL Gateway Version 1.02.15".

• 12.10 cifs shares not mounting after modifying /etc/fstab

  From Ubuntu 11.04 to 12.04 i've been able to mount my nas shares by first making directories in the /media folder, then : sudo gedit /etc/fstab to include the following line for each share I want to auto-mount; //servername/sharename /media/windowsshare cifs guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode 0 0 Now, however, I upgraded to 12.10, and suddenly I'm not able to mount the shares after saving /etc/fstab and sudo mount -a, giving me this error: Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) mount error(22): Invalid argument When in Nautilus, The shares are visible under the network tab, unmounted, and when I click on a share, I get the following message: mount: only root can mount //192.168.1.71/photos on /media/photos I checked to ensure smbfs was installed, and no problems there. I'm stumped.

• Uploading or attaching files that located on a shared drive doesn't work?

  I have this odd, quite minor, but annoying issue that I am quite perplexed about. Whenever I try to upload a file via my browser(let's say attach a file to an email in GMail), I click 'Browse' button and it opens standard file selection dialog, that doesn't show network drives. Further more if I try to drag a file from a network drive into GMail, it doesn't work either, it just doesn't let me do that. This issue has been around for quite sometime now, and I am just curious if this is something on my side or if it's a bug or a misconfiguration of some sort. FWIW, I am currently running 10.10, network drive is a samba share on NAS. This happens in FF and Chrome and this is only happens with Samba mounts. As a matter of fact, NFS volumes that are located on the same network operate perfectly fine.
