• How to specify unique container styles for heterogenous hierarchies using SL3 and TreeView control

  Hello, Just look for strategies that have been successful in rendering hierarchies that represent inheritance structures using SL3/4 TreeViews. I need to render certain nodes differently than others, depending upon what kind of container they are (a choice between things, or simply a list of related things, etc.) So far, I've been very successful with the DataTemplate route: I've been able to use a technique described in Ted Glaza's post "Easy DataTemplateSelectors in Silverlight" (you may have retrieve a Google cache of this page). SO what I'm trying to discover is something on the order of a StyleSelector, not a DataTemplateSelector. I'm considering leveraging my current implementations of Glaza's pattern of selector objects to somehow detect the node type and set the ItemContainerStyle there, but it doesn't seem clear right now. • silverlight vs ASP.NET MVC

  I'm debating whether to use Silverlight 2.0 vs ASP.NET MVC for a web application. The web application will be a subscription free service marketing all age groups. It's important the source is highly testable, but also with the Web 2.0 movement a graphical web application is important as well for competitive reasons. I'm assuming silverlight is better than the ajax helpers/MVC graphically, but foundation-wise testing is better/easier with MVC. Possibly an MVP pattern with Silverlight could increase the testability of the source. Could anyone elaborate on the pros/cons of each technology and recommend one or the other based on the above? (addition 9/22/08) In regards to allowing search engines to index the site, using either technology it will utilize a backend database whereas a lot of the content will be dynamically generated. Based on some of the comments, when we talk of the searchable content would the home page of the application if written in silverlight be searchable? Would I be able to get the site to appear in a google search?

  I like the new Dynamic keyword and read that it can be used as a replacement visitor pattern. It makes the code more declarative which I prefer. • What are some of the useful concepts to know about when building Silverlight apps?

  The Silverlight(& WPF) space seems to have a whole new nomenclature around it so at times I'm having a hard time figuring our what is important and useful to research a bit more. For example I 'know' about the MVVM pattern but I'm looking for things that are a bit smaller in scope, that is topics, ideas, programming constructs that might be used in implementing MVVM and would need to know before hand. So basically I'm looking for some of the key topics and concepts that people have found useful or are important when creating a Silverlight apps. And maybe why it is useful or important and when\where it might be applied or used. Thanks.

• UIImageView is clipping a pixel of the bottom of my UIImage...?

  I'm not sure what might be causing this, but UIImageView occasionally clips off about a pixel or 2 from the bottom of some square/rectangular UIImages I'm using as subviews for UITableViewCells. These UIImageViews are well within the borders of the cell, so it shouldn't be due to cliptobounds. There seems to be no consistency or pattern to which images are being clipped, nor when they're clipped, other than that it only happens to (or is only noticable in) square/rectangular icons, and only ones that are parented to UITableViewCells (or their subclasses). I'm having trouble reproducing the problem consistently, which is why I haven't posted any code this time. Has anyone encountered something similar to this before? I've encountered a similar bug that involved floating point values for origin/size being interpreted weirdly... but that doesn't seem to be the cause of this particular problem. I don't need a specific solution at this point, I'm just making sure I haven't missed any well-known bugs or documented problems that involve UIImageView.

  I understand that MVC & MVP are design patterns that are commonly used for web development, as well as ASP.NET WebForms (more of an anti-pattern, really!). What other patterns are used in web application development? I'm not necessarily saying I want to learn/use new patterns just to be different - I do believe there's a lot of value in taking the conventional route - but I think it's good to know what else is out there to be able to properly understand what I'm currently working with.   I am passing the SCJP 6 exam in a month. I have the "SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065" book. It seems great for the exam. But I want your advice on this. Getting the closest possible to 100% would be great. I have found a site that answered some of the questions you ask yourself when you go trough the book. • Why should I use MVVM when it breaks built in functionality

  I'm struggling to grasp why MVVM is really a good pattern to implement in riaserivces, To me there's nothing but trouble to it, it just add's another tier that I have to code. I Get that I could change the UI, but really I don't need to. Instead i won't be able to user out of the box functionality with riaservices, datagrid, dataform all controls require some implementation. Why can't it just be simple? Is there really no way to get MVVM to automatically set "IsBusy" and all the dataform edit functionality. It's like reinventing the wheel to me, and it seems that I'd be able to write code much faster just using riaservices

• What can I use the Google App Engine for?

  This question possibly doesn't belong here. We'll see how the answers pan out, if this doesn't belong here please move it to where it belongs. I'm following the getting started guide for Google App Engine, and I'm seeing what it can and can't do. Basically, I'm seeing it's very similar to an MVC pattern. You create your model, then create a View that uses that Model to display information. Not only that, but it uses a controller of some kind in this fashion: application = webapp.WSGIApplication( [('/', MainPage)], debug=True) My question is, why would you use this Google App Engine if it's the same as using a number of other MVC frameworks? Is the only benefit you gain the load balancing being handled by Google automagically? What is a good example of something you would need the App Engine for? I'm trying to learn, so thanks for the discussion.

• How do you tell that your unit tests are correct?

  I've only done minor unit testing at various points in my career. Whenever I start diving into it again, it always troubles me how to prove that my tests are correct. How can I tell that there isn't a bug in my unit test? Usually I end up running the app, proving it works, then using the unit test as a sort of regression test. What is the recommended approach and/or what is the approach you take to this problem? Edit: I also realize that you could write small, granular unit tests that would be easy to understand. However, if you assume that small, granular code is flawless and bulletproof, you could just write small, granular programs and not need unit testing. Edit2: For the arguments "unit testing is for making sure your changes don't break anything" and "this will only happen if the test has the exact same flaw as the code", what if the test overfits? It's possible to pass both good and bad code with a bad test. My main question is what good is unit testing since if your tests can be flawed you can't really improve your confidence in your code, can't really prove your refactoring worked, and can't really prove that you met the specification?

• Project Euler #163 understanding

  I spent quite a long time searching for a solution to this problem. I drew tons of cross-hatched triangles, counted the triangles in simple cases, and searched for some sort of pattern. Unfortunately, I hit the wall. I'm pretty sure my programming/math skills did not meet the prereq for this problem. So I found a solution online in order to gain access to the forums. I didn't understand most of the methods at all, and some just seemed too complicated. Can anyone give me an understanding of this problem? One of the methods, found here: http://www.math.uni-bielefeld.de/~sillke/SEQUENCES/grid-triangles (Problem C) allowed for a single function to be used. How did they come up with that solution? At this point, I'd really just like to understand some of the concepts behind this interesting problem. I know looking up the solution was not part of the Euler spirit, but I'm fairly sure I would not have solved this problem anyhow.

  In my project I have it set up so that all the tables in the DB has the property "id" and then I have the entity objects inherit from the EntityBase class using a repository pattern. I then set the inheritance modifier for "id" property in the dbml file o/r designer to "overrides" Public MustInherit Class EntityBase MustOverride Property id() As Integer End Class Public MustInherit Class RepositoryBase(Of T As EntityBase) Protected _Db As New DataClasses1DataContext Public Function GetById(ByVal Id As Integer) As T Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault End Function End Class Partial Public Class Entity1 Inherits EntityBase End Class Public Class TestRepository Inherits RepositoryBase(Of Entity1) End Class the line Return (From a In _Db.GetTable(Of T)() Where a.id = Id).SingleOrDefault however produces the error "Class member EntityBase.id is unmapped" when i use VS 2010 using the 4.0 framework but I never received that error with the old one.   I'm working on a Grails web app that would be similar in access patterns to StackOverflow or MyLifeIsAverage - users can vote on entries, and their votes are used to sort a list of entries based on the number of votes. Votes can be placed while the sorted select queries are being performed. Since the selects would lock a large portion of the table, it seems that normal transaction locking would cause updates to take forever (given enough traffic). Has anyone worked on an app with a data access pattern such as this, and if so, did you find a way to allow these updates and selects to happen more or less concurrently? Does anyone know how sites like SO approach this? My thought was to make the sorted selects dirty reads, since it is acceptable if they're not completely up to date all of the time. This is my only idea for possibly improving performance of these selects and updates, but I thought someone might know a better way.

  I have a set of Java 5 source files with old-style Doclet tags, comments and annotations. And based on that I would like to write a generator for another set of Java classes. What is the best way to do that? And are there any good standalone libraries for code analysis/generation in Java? Any shared exprience in this field is appreciated. So, far I have found these: JaxME's Java Source Reflection - seems good, but it does not seem to support annotations. Also it had no release since 2006. Annogen - uses JDK's Doclet generator, which has some bugs under 1.5 JDK. Also it had no releases for a long time. Javaparser - seems good as well and pretty recent, but only supports Visitor pattern for a single class i.e. no query mechanism like in the 2 above packages.

In the process of development, we have come up with a class that has 5 attributes, all these attributes correspond to an entry in the xml file, now if the user adds/modifies the xml entry the object corresponding to it must change automatically, one approach would be generate the source code, before compile time.Is there any other way ?   Hi all, I'm struggling with a Grails service. I suppose this is a rather typical situation to end up in. Could you recommend any pattern/good practice to fix this issue? For example, is there a way to say to one of the service instances to hang on and wait for the other to finish its stuff and try again? Cheers!

I can't figure out how to do this easily. • Regular expression: who's greedier?

  My primary concern is with the Java flavor, but I'd also appreciate information regarding others. Let's say you have a subpattern like this: (.*)(.*) Not very useful as is, but let's say these two capture groups (say, \1 and \2) are part of a bigger pattern that matches with backreferences to these groups, etc. So both are greedy, in that they try to capture as much as possible, only taking less when they have to. My question is: who's greedier? Does \1 get first priority, giving \2 its share only if it has to? What about: (.*)(.*)(.*) Let's assume that \1 does get first priority. Let's say it got too greedy, and then spit out a character. Who gets it first? Is it always \2 or can it be \3? Let's assume it's \2 that gets \1's rejection. If this still doesn't work, who spits out now? Does \2 spit to \3, or does \1 spit out another to \2 first?
