  • How can I make this arcade-highscore game more fun/interesting?

    - by j-a
I'm having difficulties getting the fun factor into this iPhone game, and I am looking for some ideas or advice. I was asked to generalize the question a bit. What are some techniques for arcade highscore games that can be applied to this game in order to: Make each second of the game fun and challenging, from the first second to the end of the game. Regardless of skill level. Make the player want to try again and again to beat the high score. Briefly about the game: you aim using your finger and pull the bow chord and release by lifting your finger. That part feels quite nice how the bow interacts with the finger. The game idea: hearts fall down and you get 1 pt for each heart you shoot. You start with a few arrows and every now and then a bag of arrow comes down which - if you hit it, you get more arrows. Once your out of arrows the game is over. So it is all about beating your previous high score or your friends high scores. Unfortunately I don't find it that fun. Thankful for any ideas/suggestions/thoughts on how to make it more fun/interesting.

  • Is there an application that converts a PC into a video game kiosk/arcade machine?

    - by Rahil627
Sorry to make the question so vague. What I ultimately want is software that allows people to play independent video games on a PC and not have to worry about maintaining it. Imagine a game that was made in a few hours that does not have a restart button and crashes often. It should be able to handle these kinds of things and do more! The software should: allow the game to be restarted manually handle game crashes (likely by restarting the game) restrict the user from doing anything crazy later... offer a UI to select the game from a list handle pre-configured key bindings cross-platform (start with windows) I just want to know if this exists already before I start creating one. As of now AutoHotKey is being used to do this sloppily. If such software does not exist then perhaps someone could recommend a general open source Kiosk software? Open Kiosk? I'll take anything. (I also could not find a related tag. Not even sure if this question should be here rather than stackoverflow)

  • What kind of physics to choose for our arcade 3D MMO?

    - by Nick
We're creating an action MMO using Three.js (WebGL) with an arcadish feel, and implementing physics for it has been a pain in the butt. Our game has a terrain where the character will walk on, and in the future 3D objects (a house, a tree, etc) that will have collisions. In terms of complexity, the physics engine should be like World of Warcraft. We don't need friction, bouncing behaviour or anything more complex like joints, etc. Just gravity. I have managed to implement terrain physics so far by casting a ray downwards, but it does not take into account possible 3D objects. Note that these 3D objects need to have convex collisions, so our artists create a 3D house and the player can walk inside but can't walk through the walls. How do I implement proper collision detection with 3D objects like in World of Warcraft? Do I need an advanced physics engine? I read about Physijs which looks cool, but I fear that it may be overkill to implement that for our game. Also, how does WoW do it? Do they have a separate raycasting system for the terrain? Or do they treat the terrain like any other convex mesh? A screenshot of our game so far:

  • What resources are there for creating a dedicated NES emulator box?

    - by normalocity
Where do I start, and what communities should I get involved in, in order to achieve the following? Ideally, I'd like to have a box that does the following (doesn't have to do this out of the box, I'm just looking to be able to achieve these goals through configs and necessary dependencies): Either bypasses login, or auto login Auto-start FCEUX with options that will (a) automatically start a ROM of my choosing, and (b) go into full-screen mode. You can assume that before I get that far, I've already configured the input devices and video options. I'd like to create (or install, if it exists) a full-screen app that takes a list of ROMs, allows me to select one with a gamepad/arcade stick, and press a button to open that game Be able to map a button on a gamepad/arcade stick to the "Power off" or exit function of the emulator, such that it will take me back to the ROM selection screen. I've already successfully installed FCEUX and tested it with an arcade stick I own, so I'm not looking for an emulator installer guide. I don't know if the ROM selector app exists already, but I'm a Java developer, and could probably create one (so long as it's not too difficult to support controllers - I was thinking of using Slick2D for this - a gaming library that I'm already pretty familiar with). The goal would be a dedicated box that I have connected to my TV. I power it on. It boots up and starts the ROM selection app, which passes the proper parameters to FCEUX (or another emulator that I might switch to at a later time), and I'm ready to go. Basically an NES emulator as a real, living room console. Also, as far as mapping a controller button to functions in the app, well, I've also played around with hardware, and it would be pretty trivial for me to modify a gamepad to trigger key presses. I just don't want to go to that length if it's not necessary.

  • Variables are "lost" somewhere, then reappear... all with no error thrown.

    - by rob - not a robber
Hi All, I'm probably going to make myself look like a fool with my horrible scripting but here we go. I have a form that I am collecting a bunch of checkbox info from using a binary method. ON/SET=1 !ISSET=0 Anyway, all seems to be going as planned except for the query bit. When I run the script, it runs through and throws no errors, but it's not doing what I think I am telling it to. I've hard coded the values in the query and left them in the script and it DOES update the DB. I've also tried echoing all the needed variables after the script runs and exiting right after so I can audit them... and they're all there. Here's an example. ####FEATURES RECORD UPDATE ### HERE I DECIDE TO RUN THE SCRIPT BASED ON WHETHER AN IMAGE BUTTON WAS USED if (isset($_POST["button_x"])) { ### HERE I AM ASSIGNING 1 OR 0 TO A VAR BASED ON WHTER THE CHECKBOX WAS SET if (isset($_POST["pool"])) $pool=1; if (!isset($_POST["pool"])) $pool=0; if (isset($_POST["darts"])) $darts=1; if (!isset($_POST["darts"])) $darts=0; if (isset($_POST["karaoke"])) $karaoke=1; if (!isset($_POST["karaoke"])) $karaoke=0; if (isset($_POST["trivia"])) $trivia=1; if (!isset($_POST["trivia"])) $trivia=0; if (isset($_POST["wii"])) $wii=1; if (!isset($_POST["wii"])) $wii=0; if (isset($_POST["guitarhero"])) $guitarhero=1; if (!isset($_POST["guitarhero"])) $guitarhero=0; if (isset($_POST["megatouch"])) $megatouch=1; if (!isset($_POST["megatouch"])) $megatouch=0; if (isset($_POST["arcade"])) $arcade=1; if (!isset($_POST["arcade"])) $arcade=0; if (isset($_POST["jukebox"])) $jukebox=1; if (!isset($_POST["jukebox"])) $jukebox=0; if (isset($_POST["dancefloor"])) $dancefloor=1; if (!isset($_POST["dancefloor"])) $dancefloor=0; ### I'VE DONE LOADS OF PERMUTATIONS HERE... HARD SET THE 1/0 VARS AND LEFT THE $estab_id TO BE PICKED UP. SET THE $estab_id AND LEFT THE COLUMN DATA TO BE PICKED UP. ALL NO GOOD. IT _DOES_ WORK IF I HARD SET ALL VARS THOUGH mysql_query("UPDATE thedatabase SET pool_table='$pool', darts='$darts', karoke='$karaoke', trivia='$trivia', wii='$wii', megatouch='$megatouch', guitar_hero='$guitarhero', arcade_games='$arcade', dancefloor='$dancefloor' WHERE establishment_id='22'"); ###WEIRD THING HERE IS IF I ECHO THE VARS AT THIS POINT AND THEN EXIT(); they all show up as intended. header("location:theadminfilething.php"); exit(); THANKS ALL!!!

  • Multithreading for a mixed-genre game in Python?

    - by arrogantc
So here's the situation. I'm making a game that mixes two genres; arcade shooter and puzzler. They don't intertwine TOO much; all the interaction that really goes on is that every time an enemy is destroyed, a block is created. The blocks aren't even a part of the main collision detection system; they have their own more suited to their needs. What I want to ask is this; might it be a good idea to have the arcade shooter portion run on one thread, and the puzzle game portion run on another?

  • Any Programming Languages Recommendations? A Space shooter game that allows two people to play at the same time?

    - by Bombcode
Hey Everyone, Do you remember a arcade game, that allow two people to versus or play each other? A Galaga/Gradius type game. Me and a couple of other people I know wanna make a game like this. We want to get some other opinions on what programming languages to use.(C or C++ isn't an option .). We plan to use an engine to help us build. It's gonna be a multiplayer game, so we would be handling the networking with this language as well. We are thinking about C#, Java, or Actionscript 3. Any Advice on this? And if anyone knows the arcade game I am referring to please post up :)! Edit Let me add something here, this game will be plain on computers and laptops only. We mainly wanna what's good for handling the networking and Dual screen play.

  • XNA Notes 004

    - by George Clingerman
The XNA community has been crazy busy again. It always make me fee like such a slacker collecting all of these notes as I see the tremendous output from people all over the world and it’s incredible and humbling. There are some amazingly skilled people working with XNA. On another not, I’m going to take a minute to get on my soapbox and say, if you are developing ANYTHING and are not using some sort of source/revision control, START IMMEDIATELY. This applies to teams of one. Projects for fun. And “I back up my hard drive” or “I use dropbox!” does NOT count as using source control. You’ll be doing yourself a HUGE favor if you find one, learn to use it and integrate it into your everyday workflow. I personally use Subversion. It’s hosted offsite at xp.dev.com and I use TortoiseSVN as my front end to interface with the repository. It’s simple and easy to use and has saved me from myself so many time. Honestly, get setup with some type of source control immediately. If you don’t understand how, grab another developer that does and have them walk you through setup and the basics of using it. Ok, I’m done. - by Stephen.Walther
Last week, I finished writing Windows 8 Apps with HTML5 and JavaScript – Yikes! That is a long title. This book is all about writing apps for Windows 8 which can be added to the Windows Store. The book focuses on building apps using HTML5 and JavaScript. If you are already comfortable building websites, then building Windows Store apps is not a huge leap.  I explain how you can create productivity apps, like a Task List app, and games, like a simple arcade game. I also explain how you can publish your app to the Windows Store and make money. To celebrate the release of Windows 8, my publisher is offering a huge 40% discount on the book until November 30, 2012. If you want to take advantage of this discount, follow the link below and enter the discount code WINDEV40 during checkout. http://www.informit.com/promotions/promotion.aspx?promo=139036&walther So what’s in the book?  Here’s an overview of each of the chapters: Chapter 1 – Building Windows Store Apps Contains a walkthrough of creating a super simple Windows app for taking pictures from your webcam. Explains how to publish your app to the Windows Store. Chapter 2 – WinJS Fundamentals Provides an overview of the Windows Library for JavaScript which is the Microsoft library for creating Windows Store apps with JavaScript. Chapter 3 – Observables, Bindings, and Templates You learn how to display a list of items using a template. For example, you learn how to create a template which can be used to display a list of products. You can use the ListView control to display, sort, filter, and edit a list of items. Chapter 8 – Creating Data Sources Learn how to use a ListView control to display data from the file system, a web service, and IndexedDB. Chapter 9 – App Events and States This chapter explains the standard application events which are raised in a Windows Store app such as the activated and checkpoint events. You also learn how to build apps which adapt automatically to different view states such as portrait and landscape. Chapter 10 – Page Fragments and Navigation This chapter discusses two subjects: You learn how to create custom WinJS controls with Page Controls and you learn how to build apps with multiple pages.  Chapter 11 – Using the Live Connect API Learn how to use Windows Live Services to authenticate users, interact with SkyDrive, and retrieve user profile information (such as a user’s birthday or profile picture). Chapter 12 – Graphics and Games This chapter is devoted to building the Brain Eaters app which is a simple arcade game. • Development platform for 2D web and mobile games

    - by Robert Vella
Is there a game development platform -- similar to Torque, or Unity -- which can be used to deploy 2D games on the following platforms: Web iOs Android Xbox Live Arcade (Preferred but not required) And which has an integrated or mature physics engine? Perhaps, even a built in editor? I've looked at the following possibilities but I've found something missing in each one. Of course in each case I may be guilty of misconception. Corona SDK (No web deployment, no windows support) Torque 2D (No web deployment) Flash + Flash Punk or Flixel (No native android deployment, and I'm not sure if it is stable on mobile platforms) Unity + SpriteManager2 (Not really optimised for 2D games, and I haven't seen enough advanced 2D examples -- like say platformers -- to really have any confidence in using it for something like this) Has anyone had any luck with this?

The thing i am worrying about is how would i be sure that the client is the one that i put out for the end user to play with? Kind of a like of sv_pure for Team Fortress 2. I was thinking of different ways to combat this such as the server requesting the client's version or even it's md5 hash but people with simple java knowledge could just force a method to always return what the server wants.

  • When would I use pseudocode instead of flowchart?

    - by user1276078
I'm a student working with various techniques of programming, and I've come across pseudocode and flowchart. I know that these are both used in order to think through the problem before actually programming, but I have a few questions with this. When would I use pseudocode to plan out and when would I use flowcharts? Or is it better to do both before actually programming. Particularly for a small arcade sort of game in JAVA since that is my next project. I've noticed that pseudocode is very similar to the actual code rather than flowcharts. Would this make pseudocoding better because you essentially copy/paste the pseudocode into your program (of course, you have to change it to fit the language. I understand that part). Is it practical to use both of these while programming? Particularly the same game mentioned earlier. Thanks.

  • I made a game in XNA - how can I share it with my friends?

    - by Raven Dreamer
I've just finished programming a charming (albeit bare-bones) XNA version of arcade classic Tempest. Hooray! Given that this was a homework assignment, I'd like to be able to share it with my professor and my friends/classmates to solicit feedback. (And let's be honest - if I have a question about how to add in an additional feature, it might be nice to be able to share it with folks on this site as well.) Is there a better way of sharing an XNA game than by shuttling the visual studio - produced executable around? Some way to host it on a website would be ideal.

  • Current state of the art for holographic displays?

    - by kamziro
In another thread I was asking about independent arcade system development, and partly it was because I'm interested in using available 3D holographic technology for the displays. I saw one which involved a rotating mirror at very high speeds, so that's probably not going to be too feasible (I'd hate to think of what happens when something goes wrong). However, I looked around for videos from trade shows, and I found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vl0EIngM-RA But information is scarce, and I'm led to believe it's just using mirrors and reflections, and does not convey true 3D depth like the one using rotating mirrors at high speed: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKCUGQ-uo8c So yeah, does anyone know if there's something better available today?

  • Which java game engine is better? [closed]

    - by user1276078
I'm new to mobile game development and I have a number of questions to ask. So if you could please answer them, it would be highly appreciated The game I'm trying to release is a 2D arcade game. My intention is to release it on both the iOS platform and the Android platform. My best language is Java, so I would like to use a game engine where I can code with that. Which game engine is the best to accomplish all of this? I know that to make an iOS game with Xcode you need to use a Mac. My question is, do you still need a Mac if you're making a game for iOS without Xcode (like with OpenGL or something Thank you in advance
