• Having problem to login after upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04

  I just update to 12.04 from 11.10 and I get to the login screen w/o problems. When I enter my password the screen turns black and returns to the login screen half a second later. There is a related question out there which was solved by creating more space on the disk but my disks (or rather partitions) are all below 30%. I can log in as guest. I can also login at the cmd prompt (going to tty with Alt+Ctrl+F1) with my normal user credentials. When logged in as guest I can also install programs using my normal account password. There is the normal authentication error when I mistype my password so I'm also sure the password works. Any suggestions?

• Color based collision detection

  I am making a game where you fly a ship around some randomly generated planets. Since I am using a for loop to draw over 5000 planets, using the rectangle class or an oval-type class for this is not an option, since creating many objects will severely affect performance. Bitmasking each planet will likely result in performance issues too, so the only candidate is color based collision detection, because I don't need to apply some sort of object to everything I want to check for collisions. Is any way to check the perimeter around the ship for a certain color?

I'd like to change things up and have the enemies move towards the player but in a wave like motion. I have looked at some similar questions like this but they don't take into account for the Y changing. How can I simulate a wave like pattern for my enemies whilst they are homing into their target. • How do I do a game loop in c99?

  I'm having trouble with how to structure a game using c99. I've seen a few tutorials on making a game loop, but they are all done with c++ and classes. My main problem seems to be moving data around between the functions without creating a mess, and what stuff to put in what header files etc. Do I just do something similar to the c++ loops, and create a class-like header with a structure containing all items needed by more than one of the functions, along with the prototypes of said functions, and include the header in each function's header file? Then, in the main function, instantiate the structure and pass a pointer to it to every function in the loop? Is this ok, or is there a better way to do it, and are there any good 'c' specific tutorials available? Cheers

  I'm creating a parameter table in our database. This table will have 1 row with values that are environment specific (production, development, etc). Is there any reason why I should define an index on this table? Update This table is a parameter table which will be used to drive our job queue system.   I'm imagining a situation where you are creating an F# module in a purely functional style. This means objects do not have mutable fields and are not modified in place. I'm assuming for simplicity that there is no need to use .NET objects or other kinds of objects. There are two possible ways of implementing an object-oriented kind of solution: the first is to use type classes and the second to use records which have fields of functional type, to implement methods. I imagine you'd use classes when you want to use inheritance but that otherwise records would be adequate, if perhaps clumsier to express. Or do you find classes more convenient than records in any case?

• Designing a hierarchical structure with lots of reads and writes?

  I am in the process of working on a video on demand system part of it involves the management of a hierarchical tree structure (think windows explorer) which allows users to upload videos, move folders around, create new folders etc. User action will be allowed depending on which permissions they have. In addition to managing the structure (creating folders and uploading videos), subscribers will be viewing content (read access). The number of reads will be significantly more than the writes. My question (and it is big one) is should I store the data in a database (for the writes) and also have some sort of cache which will be used for the reads? or do I use two databases? or is there a better solution? Also I will have to resolve concurrency issues which I think optimistic locking on the database will resolve. I have a fair bit about CQRS over the last few months but not sure if this is the way to go. Any ideas?

  I'm creating a shooter, it's still very early, but i'm implementing some polygon hitboxes. So far i have created a polygon class, and i'm looking into how i can hook it onto my player. I'm trying to stay away from having a Tick() function in my polygon class, and I would rather not update the position every tick (it would clutter up my tick functions). At the same time I would really like to have the positions in there somehow (it has a drawing function, and i will be using it for hit detection) How would i go about implementing this polygon object into my entities?

• Game Object Design

  I'm having a problem with the way I designed my first simple game in C++. I have GameObject (abstract class) and ObjectA which inherits the update() and draw() methods from GameObject. My main loop contains a linked list of GameObject*, and while that list is not empty it cycles through it, calling update on each one. Up until this point, I thought the design was standard(?) and would work. However, when I call update on ObjectA() I run into two problems: ObjectA can die which messes up the list, which in turn throws off the loop in main. ObjectA can spawn more ObjectA's but these are local scope and the update() goes out of scope, creating problems in main's list of GameObjects. I think my design if alright, but I'm having such problems with segmentation faults that there must be something seriously wrong with at least one part of my implementation. If anyone could point out any serious mistakes or simple examples of this being done (or even alternative designs) then I would greatly appreciate it!

  I hope this helps explain the issue I am having I have recently designed a horizontal scrolling portfolio for a client, the rights and wrongs of horizontal web design, is a sligtly seperate topic but alas the client wanted something different. Im having a real issue with the bottom div though As the monitor size is reduced its creating the browser scroll bar down the side as the div image is overlapping the monitor size. Wouldnt be such a huge issue but because of the nature of the horizontal site its producing a diagional scrolling effect. Is there away to prevent the screen expanding from the actual monitor size using css or anyother solution? I'm probably staring at the answer as I type but brain doesnt seem to be working unfortunately.

  I have around 15 templates (this will grow) and each template will have around 10-15 questions. Each question can have answers in different format like text box, list box, dropdown, radio button etc. I need to show one template in a page, at a time based on the input I am getting. What would be the best design approach for this? Put questions data in database and Create dynamic control? Putting in xml and display using xslt? Creating static set of templates? Or any other approach? I don't have too much time to do this. I am going to use Silverlight for this.

  I would like to implement some kind of manager class in my application. It will be in charge of loading textures, processing them, distributing them etc... However, the users there seem to recommend to never use global variables. Fine then, I once heard about Singletons, so I though I could use that instead. I mean, creating just one instance of my manager class sounds good.   Which is better/more generally accepted? This: if(condition) { statement; } Or: if(condition) statement; I tend to prefer the first one, because I think it makes it easier to tell what actually belongs in the if block, it saves others from adding the braces later (or creating a bug by forgetting to), and it makes all your if statements uniform instead of some with braces and some without. The second one, however, is still syntactically correct and definitely more compact. I'm curious to see which is more generally preferred by others though.

and web service is up and running. I'm using Netbeans IDE in Ubuntu 12.04 to build and deploy the application and I couldn't figure out what is the issue here. I guess its about spring and jboss because its working in glassfish smoothly. Please help me to solve this issue. Thanks all in advance.

• Info on UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist

  The iPad programming guide says I have to include the UIDeviceFamily key in Info.plist. It also says that the transitioning a target to iPad should have added the key. It didn't. I tried creating blank projects, both iPad-only and universal, and neither got that key. Google comes up short too. What's the story on this mysterious key? The simulator doesn't mind the fact it's missing.
