  Hello and merry Christmas everybody!Yes. This year, it's a v4.0 Xmas! VirtualBox just came out with a new major version release. Version 4.0 is available at : http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ... and of course, it's open source, and it's free. And I suggest (strongly) that you also download the free Extension Pack from the same page... Brings USB 2.0 emulation and more!I upgraded the version on my Solaris Express (get that from : http://www.oracle.com/solaris/index.html and follow the Download Solaris Express link on the right) laptop (pfexec pkgrm SUNWvbox and then pfexec pkgadd -d the .pkg in the compressed archive file, and install the extensions from the VBox GUI once it's launched). If you are on an old fashion OS without proper RBAC, replace pfexec by sudo. Which you can also do on Solaris if you really want to. :)I tell you, it's Christmas, for sure!Merry VBox!Gilles.

  The materials and recording from the February 2012 call for JCP program Spec Leads is now available.  This call features Martijn Verburg, alternate EC representative for the London Java Community and includes information on the Adopt-a-JSR program.  The materials and audio recording of the  "Leveraging the Community" call can be found on the multimedia page of jcp.org .  The EC meeting summaries from February and March 2012 have also been posted.  Following the April 2012 EC Meeting this morning (minutes and materials will be posted soon), there are now four EC Members that have lost their voting privileges--AT&T, SK Telecom, Samsung and Twitter.  In order to regain their privileges, these EC Members must attend two EC meeting in a row, as detailed in the EC Standing Rules.

• How to make Firefox windows style less space consuming?

  Firefox takes up so much space on small screens, so I'm searching for solutions that make firefox' interface less space consuming on ubuntu 12.04 with gnome3. Good examples are the chromium-style, but chromium is kind of slow in gnome3. Chromium does it, firefox on osx does it. Is this also possible on ubuntu via a custom modification or something? • JavaFX Makeover for JFugue Music NotePad

  Bengt-Erik Fröberg from Sweden, one of the developers working on ProSang, the leading Scandinavian blood bank system (and based on the NetBeans Platform), is reworking the user interface of the JFugue Music NotePad. In particular, the Score window (named ScoreFX window below) contains components that are now quite clearly JavaFX, instead of Swing. Looks a lot better and also performs better. The sliders in the Keyboard window are candidates for being similarly redone to use JavaFX instead of Swing. Want to do something similar? • My colleague can't visit our website through her provider after long downtime

  We did a frontpage update some days ago that caused the site to crash. The site was down for several hours. After troubleshooting, we concluded that we needed to cache more content. It had been run too many queries. After solving that and rebooting of server, we here in Sweden and Norway were again able to visit the site. But a colleague in Tunisia couldn't. It seems to work from another internet provider but not her own. What could have happened? And what should we do? Edit: I should add: She is able to visit the site through tunnel at anonymouse.org.

• Alternative way of developing for ASP.NET to WebForms - Any problems with this?

  So I have been developing in ASP.NET WebForms for some time now but often get annoyed with all the overhead (like ViewState and all the JavaScript it generates), and the way WebForms takes over a lot of the HTML generation. Sometimes I just want full control over the markup and produce efficient HTML of my own so I have been experimenting with what I like to call HtmlForms. Essentially this is using ASP.NET WebForms but without the form runat="server" tag. Without this tag, ASP.NET does not seem to add anything to the page at all. From some basic tests it seems that it runs well and you still have the ability to use code-behind pages, and many ASP.NET controls such as repeaters. Of course without the form runat="server" many controls won't work. A post at Enterprise Software Development lists the controls that do require the tag. From that list you will see that all of the form elements like TextBoxes, DropDownLists, RadioButtons, etc cannot be used. Instead you use normal HTML form controls. But how do you access these HTML controls from the code behind? Retrieving values on post back is easy, you just use Request.QueryString or Request.Form. But passing data to the control could be a little messy. Do you use a ASP.NET Literal control in the value field or do you use <%= value % in the markup page? Interestingly you can also use HttpPostedFile to handle file uploads using your own input type="file" control (and necessary form enctype="multipart/form-data"). So my question is can you see any problems with this method, and any thoughts on it's usefulness? I have further details and tests on my blog.

I know that there are non-english based programming languages, but can something like C#, C++, C, Java, or Python support non-english classes/methods/variables? But why is usually Java written where the opening brace is on the same line as the function definition of control statement, and in C or C++ the curly braces have a line of their own? • large product image structured data and visibility

  On an eCommerce site we two images for a product. One medium sized shown on top of the page and one large photo shown on click in an overlay. We use http://schema.org/Product microdata on the page. We'd like the large, initially hidden, photo to be the main image for the product, as it's the better looking one. So it's also referenced in the XML sitemap as <image:image>. So we also put the itemprop"image" attribute on the, hidden large image. But i'm wondering is it a bad idea to use a microdata attribute on a hidden style="display:none;" element? is there a better way to embed the main image in terms of SEO, without showing it initially?

• On Golf Tournaments & Installers

  I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • Install Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu Server 10.04 from Source

  Has anyone had any luck compiling and installing Samba 3.0.24 on Ubuntu 10.04? I'm trying to set up realtime virus scanning on Samba shares (ClamAV) using the legacy version of Samba as it is the latest release supported by samba-vscan-0.3.6b. I'm no expert at this but I think I have all of the dependencies covered and I'm following the documentation with the source code but I'm getting errors as if there is a problem with the source code. I downloaded the source directly from http://ftp.samba.org/pub/samba/stable/samba-3.0.24.tar.gz After running ./configure and make, I get the following error. • How come I can not install plugins on my local Wordpress install?

  Hello, I got WordPress up and running fine on Ubuntu 10.04 by using this source except that when I try to update and install themes/plugins I get this following error message in wp-admin page: Installing Plugin: WordPress.com Stats 1.8.1 Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/stats.1.8.1.zip… Unpacking the package… Could not create directory. /var/www/wordpress/wp-content/upgrade/stats.tmp/stats Actions: Return to Plugin Installer At first I thought I had to setup an FTP account but searched more and I found some information that says that I need to change the permissions of the wp-content folder which is located in the directory: /var/www/wordpress/wp-content I tried changing it by doing: sudo chmod -R 777 wp-content/ but when I tried installing a plugin I got the same error message. I also tried passing it 755 as a permission but still got the same thing. I settled on 755 because it is more secure I have read. How can I solve this problem safely and securely?

  I asked about fixing DPI in 12.04. The 14.04 release notes list "Support for High-DPI screens and desktop scaling." Post upgrade, it seems that nothing has changed. Similar symptoms from my previous post persist: The 1" square here is closer to 1/2" Despite the line xserver-command=X -dpi 170 in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf, xdpyinfo reports 96x96 dpi I did find that I was able to use the "Scale for menu and title bars" slider in System SettingsDisplays to fix title bar text size instead of setting org.gnome.desktop.interface text-scaling-factor as described here. The last post also mentions that in Gnome 3, DPI is hard coded to 96. Is this a limitation in 14.04? (I am somewhat ignorant to the distinction between Gnome and Unity) Can I do anything to properly set my DPI?
