• Upgrade to 14.04 broke gsettings

  I have a cron job which runs every 30 minutes that changes the background image by running this bash script: #!/bin/bash export DISPLAY=:0 export GSETTINGS_BACKEND=dconf wpdir="/home/username/Pictures/wallpapers/" prefix="file://" file=`ls $wpdir | shuf -n 1` gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri "$prefix$wpdir$file" This worked perfectly until I upgraded to 14.04. Now, running the script produces this output: (process:27459): dconf-WARNING **: failed to commit changes to dconf: Could not connect: Connection refused What can I do to fix this? Google didn't turn up any useful results. EDIT: I noticed that running this does change the background displayed on the lock screen, but it does not affect the desktop background.

• Developing a computer system based on Nand2Tetris [on hold]

  I recently finished a book called Nand2Tetris (nand2tetris.org) where I built my own computer system from scratch with its own machine language, assembly code, and a high level language called Jack that's translated to Hack binary. However, I feel like the "computer" I built throughout the course of this book (called the Hack computer) is a bit too simple for various reasons: 1) There are only two registers (D and A), whereas most computers have much more 2) Peripheral devices like mouse and keyboard have to be directly implemented 3) Peripheral devices use a pre-planned shared memory map to communicate with the CPU instead of using interrupts (which aren't covered at all) 4) Jack (the high level language) code doesn't compile to Assembly code directly, instead it compiles to an intermediate language, which in turn gets translated to Assembly. 5) There is no ROM or permanent storage device, everything is stored in RAM 6) No support for colored monitor, networking or sound I would like to build a more complicated computer system now based on what I've learned from Nand2Tetris. Does anyone know of any good resources or books to get started on this? (BTW by computer system I mean software that can emulate the hardware of a virtual computer with its own unique instruction set)

• Problems in creating click package for native application

  Hello everyone I've tried may times to package a native click application mainly following this tutorial: http://notyetthere.org/?p=316 The procedure works and I'm able to execute the binaries both on phones and desktops. The problems start when I install the click package. The application is launched but the game is not working (the "gamefield" is not loaded). The only error message that is given is that versions of localstorages are not compatible (that is impossbile, because it never changed). I suspect that the problem is related to apparmor but I have no proof of that. • What zoomable image viewers are there for websites?

  What zoomable image viewers are there? By these I mean tools that one can embed in a website to let a user zoom in on and pan around a high res image, a canonical example being http://www.zoomify.com/ (see the demo on their home page). Comments on them are welcome. I'm personally looking for something simple and cheap/free which ideally doesn't require Flash, and will accept the answer that comes closest to these requirements. But others who find this question may have different requirements, so all suggestions will be helpful. I have of course searched; I've found Zoomify, http://www.openzoom.org/ and http://code.google.com/p/galapix/ but none seem to meet my requirements, though I could be wrong and others may have more expert comments on these.

• How do I update the IcedTea Plugin on 12.10?

  Whenever I open up the page http://www.runescape.com/game.ws? in google chrome I get the notice, "IcedTea was blocked because it is out of date" and gives me the two options of updating it or running this time. I've gone to the link attached to the option of updating it and its a wikipedia page http://icedtea.classpath.org/wiki/Main_Page that wasn't helpful for me because I didn't know what to download and install. Whenever I click, 'Run this time' it works momentarily but it is prone to have the runescape interface in the browser disappear and be replaced with a black screen.

• RabbitVCS suddenly stopped working in Nautilus with Ubuntu 11.04

  A while ago I installed RabbitVCS on Ubuntu 11.04. It then all worked pretty well, but since a few weeks (maybe even more than a month) RabbitVCS suddenly disappeared from the Nautilus context menu. I visited this page: http://wiki.rabbitvcs.org/wiki/support/known-issues and saw some points I could try, but none of them worked out to a working version again. Also this issue Rabbit VCS stopped working after upgrade to 11.10 does not describe the solution for me, so I think it might be something else. I have also tried to reinstall RabbitVCS again from the PPA which was recently updated according to this topic, but no luck. I am still on 11.04 (as I don't like the way Ubuntu is going in newer versions at all) and my Nautilus version is 2.32.2.1 . Is there someone who can help with this one?

So I think if someone have experience with Openstack Nova can help me with my problem. I've read some explanations about nova-network and how to configure it like this one from wiki: http://wiki.openstack.org/UnderstandingFlatNetworking I'm confusing about a detail. If every traffic from the instances must go through nova controller node, then why we still need the public interface for nova-compute node? Is it necessary? What happen when a request from outside to an instance. For example I have a controller node and a nova-compute node. In nova-compute node I run an instance with a Wordpress website. Then someone connect to the public IP of this instance. So the request go directly from router to the nova-compute node or from router to controller node then nova-compute node? Thank you!

  I have been thinking how to create realistic sound for a car. The main sound is the engine, then all kind of wind, road and suspension sounds. Are there any open source projects for the engine sound simulation? Simply pitching up the sample does not sound too great. The ideal would be to something that allows me to pick type of the engine (i.e. inline-4 vs v-8), add extras like turbo/supercharger whine and finally set the load and rpm. What do lines 2 and 3 do in Ubuntu (I understand cat)? Is it only for other Linux distributions? After running this script as root, the output I get is Log files cleaned up. But /var/log still contains all the files.

• How to configure extra buttons in Logitech Mouse

  Can anyone tell me how to configure all the buttons on a Logitech MX 620 mouse (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/mice/2987) under Ubuntu 12.04? Specifically, I like to make one of them just the ctrl key (for control clicking webpages) and another one ctrl-w to close tabs. I also normally make the scroll wheel page down for each click (otherwise it hurts my arms to be scrolling so much). I make pushing the wheel to the left = pageback and pushing to the right = page forward. I've searched for other answers to this and found something related here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1789807 But when I posted a followup post to solve the issue, no one responded --perhaps I made the mistake of posting to a question that had been "solved." • Ubuntu Suspend won't wake by mouse

  I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and realized that suspend would not wake by either keyboard or mouse. After following instructions from here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1642817 The system will now wake by keyboard. I have a USB mouse it is a logitech G5. Even if I enable all of the USB devices listed in /proc/acpi/wakeup, my computer will still not wake up via mouse. I'd really prefer to wake by mouse instead of keyboard due to cats. Does anyone know why my mouse won't wake the machine even after enabling all USB devices listed? Thanks, Bryan

I have been toying with the idea of a Corsair h80i for my dual boot system (win7/U12.10) and mostly use it in ubuntu.   I made a modified version of 12.04's Ambiance that uses a dark sidebar for Nautilus, and I would like to redistribute it via e.g. gnome-look.org. From the Launchpad page for the light-themes package, it says the themes are available under a Creative Commons BY-SA 3.0 license. The way I understand it, I can distribute my modified theme so long as I provide proper attribution for it and place it under the same license. In this case, who do I attribute as the author of the original theme and where/how should I display this attribution?

• Better control on code updates

  I will briefly explain my situation. I have a website in PHP, this website is powered by a custom framework + some "plug-in" made ad hoc for it. I am the only developer of this. Until now I just test locally any changes than I upload the php files via FTP. I don't feel confortable anymore with this. The code base has grown quite a lot and I need some sort of system that helps to keep track of changes (line by line) and can restore to an old version easly if something goes wrong. Are there any good solution for this? • Ubuntu software center crashes when i try to download anything

  I was trying to set up an old printer by installing several drivers, and I got a problem in software center. I am unable to download anything from it. It opens, but when I try to download something it drops an error message and the installation stops. I can do all the installations from command line, so it is not a major problem, but still will be nice having it again. I reinstall it several times from terminal trying all the solutions I found in the forum, but still the problem is here. Any help is appreciated. • Any way to edit Warcraft MDX or MDL Animated models?

  I have been searching for a while for a way to get an animated mdl or mdx model into any 3D animating software (such as Blender), but so far have not had any success. I found a few methods of getting textured static mdx or mdl models into Blender/Milkshape/Hexagon, but no one seems to have written an importer that deals with the mdl/mdx model's keyframe animation. On that note, if anyone knows of a way of importing a keyframe-animated 3DS model into Blender, me and alot of people would appreciate it if you could let us know.   As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Incidentally the other supposed advantage of MVP and MVC over web forms of easier testing is also very dubious as web forms can be tested by systems such as Selenium or WaTiN. I have used NUnitASP (alas sadly discontinued) with web forms and found it be more effective than unit testing MVP. Now if you prefer the MVP and / or MVC approach over Web forms then fine, that is your preferance. Now if you can find an example where ASP.NET 4.0 Web forms properly written do not produce XHTML compliant markup, I would be glad of your example and will look at ways of modifying the markup to be XHTML compliant.

  We are adding internationalization to our site. We are getting the client's IP address from the headers and looking it up against the IP2location database to get the client's country. Several of our clients reported seeing a blank page over the weekend. We'd like to be able to get screenshots or use a browser from many different countries on an ongoing basis for testing code changes. I need to know what the site looks like when accessed from various countries since there are several elements that vary by country. I've used Tor and Vidalia, along with the Tor customized Firefox browser however it appears the CSS is getting mangled. I have also used http://webpagetest.org to check the site, however the screenshot it gives is too small to be really useful. Is there a site or a service I can use to get screenshots or interact with my website from various countries?

  Hy Everyone! I have some graphics glich when enable gpu acc. in chrome. If i disable acceleraion it fix the glich but, in full HD most of flash videos frame rate drop above frogs a**, so very slow... :) Any idea, what can i do? I Upload 2 pics from glich. My hardware: CM Hyper TX 3 on AMD A5300 with HD 7480D 6 GB RAM I use official AMD driver from amd.com, Ubuntu 14.04(I upgraded from 12.04, in Ubuntu 12, same glitch with old drivers.) I reinstalld x.org completly and purge all config files, but this didnt resolve the problem.   I'm trying to understand better how Hadoop works, and I'm reading The NameNode is a Single Point of Failure for the HDFS Cluster. HDFS is not currently a High Availability system. When the NameNode goes down, the file system goes offline. There is an optional SecondaryNameNode that can be hosted on a separate machine. It only creates checkpoints of the namespace by merging the edits file into the fsimage file and does not provide any real redundancy. Hadoop 0.21+ has a BackupNameNode that is part of a plan to have an HA name service, but it needs active contributions from the people who want it (i.e. you) to make it Highly Available. from http://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/NameNode So why is the NameNode a single point of failure? What is bad or difficult about having a complete duplicate of the NameNode running as well?

Yukon Optima 88E8059 [PCIe Gigabit Ethernet Controller with AVB] (rev 11) After system being suspended the sky2 driver loads but does not enable the NIC. I have noticed that it happens when PC is left suspended for longer period of time (few houres) Trying to reproduce it I have tried to load the sky2 driver with 'modprobe sky2'. Unfortunately typing 'ifconfig -a' for the onboard ethernet adapter does not list the driver once the sky2 driver is loaded. I have searched internet and I found some information about a bug in kernel. Hovewer it was reported in 2010 so I hope it has been fixed.
