• Safe to KILL a mysql process REPLACEing records in a large myisam table?

  I have a REPLACE query running for a few days now on a few MyISAM tables, the largest having 20+million records. I need it to stop. It is, basically: REPLACE INTO really_large_table (a,b,c,d) SELECT e,f,g,h FROM big_table INNER JOIN huge_table ON big_table.x LIKE CONCAT('%', huge_table.y, '%'); I need to KILL it, and I am worried that I may corrupt really_large_table. Because the sub-query itself takes a significant amount of time, the REPLACEing probably occurs (relatively) infrequently; if this is true, does this make it less likely for the data to become corrupted? • Stopping pirates

  Okay, what do I do to stop pirates? Obviously a callhome to internet service. We are considering making some major aspects be dependent on a web service of some sort. Memory offsets and cracking. If I like rand randomly to allocate empty memory on the heap, would this throw off the crackers? I hacked some memory shit for EverQuest back in the dizzay but don't really know much about this. Registry on windows, etc., I know theres ways to identify the computer. That's easily spoofed with hex editor, but if I jumble up the strings in the program would that help? I need to know that + real ideas. I want the serials of their sound cards. Any other ideas?

  Should the HTML5 database be used to store any form of private information? Say we have the following scenario; You're browsing a web-mail client, that uses the web database to store mail drafts after you've written some information you close the web browser. What's to stop me from getting access to this information? If the webpage tries to clean out old information when opened a user-script could easily prevent the website from fully loading and then search through the database.   Hi folks, I am working on one feature i.e. to apply language segmentation rules ( grammatical ) for Latin based language ( English currently ). Currently I am in phase of breaking sentences of user input. e.g.: "I am working in language translation". "I have used Google MT API for this" In above example i will break above sentence by full stop (.) This is normal cases where I am breaking sentence on dot, but there are n number of characters for breaking sentence like ( . ! ? etc ). I have following SRX rules for segmentation. • Is registering your app through iTunesConnect required to test GameKit integration?

  I'd like to add GameKit integration to my app. I was hoping to be able to evaluate how it works. From the docs I found, it seems that I have to register my app through iTunes Connect first. I'm new to the iOS development front, so maybe I'm wrong here, but it seems like registering your app in iTunes Connect is a pretty final step, and I'd like to be able to test things before going through that step. So, I guess I have two questions: 1.) Do I have to register my app with iTunes Connect before being able to use GameKit? 2.) Am I being crazy about not wanting to register with iTunes Connect yet? Should I stop worrying and just do it?

• Detect IE setting: check for newer versions of stored pages "never"

  I understand there isn't a way to interrogate a users IE settings directly due to security reasons, but is there a way to derive this answer with some other mechanism? I would like to stop a user from using my site if the setting "Check for newer versions of stored pages" is set to "Never". Any suggestions? Is there a way I could test for this using javascript? An example of what I am trying to accomplish is this: While it is not possible to check IE settings to see if you are running a popup blocker, that is a way to "test" for a popup blocker via javascript. I am looking for something similiar but for the cache setting, not the popup blocker.

• IconDownloader, problem with lazy downloading

  My problem is simple to be described but it seems to be hard to solve. The problem is loading icons, with a custom class like IconDownloader.m provided by an official example from Apple, avoiding crashes if I release the view. I've added the IconDownloader class to my app, but it's clear that this approach is good only if the tableview is the root. The big problem is when the view is not the root one. F.e: if I start to scroll my second view (the app now load the icons) and, without leaving it the time to finish the download, I go back to root, the app crash because the view that have to be updated with new icons doesn't exist anymore. One possible solution could be implement an OperationQueue in the view, but with this approach I've to stop the queue when I change the view and restart it when I come back and the idea to have N queues don't make me enthusiastic. Anyone found a good solution for this problem?

• Tomcat myfaces dynamic source files

  Hi, I'm going to try and make as much sense as possible here. We are working on a myfaces 2 app in tomcat. On our local dev machines, whenever we want to change one of our xhtml files, we have to stop the server, deploy and then start the server back up. This is cumbersome and makes making small changes to the view tedious. I tried changing the deployed xhtml file in tomcat, but the server only picks up the new change after a restart. Is there any type of config in myfaces or tomcat I can do to force the rebuilding of these source xhtml's every time?

• Help porting a bit of Prototype JavaScript to jQuery

  I have already implemented some AJAX pagination in my Rails app by using the example code for the will_paginate plugin--which is apparently using Prototype. But if I wanted to switch to using jQuery for future additions, I really don't want to have the Prototype stuff sitting around too (yes, I know it's possible). One is an intelligent solution to a difficult problem that results in improved efficiency and a better way to to do something and the other will wind up on The Daily WTF, and result in headaches and pain for anyone else involved. My question is how do you distinguish between one and the other? How do you figure out if you've over thought the solution? How do you stop yourself from throwing away truly clever solutions, thinking they were "clever"?

• Can I get a faster output pipe than /dev/null ?

  Hi I am running a huge task [automated translation scripted with perl + database etc.] to run for about 2 weeks non-stop. While thinking how to speed it up I saw that the translator outputs everything (all translated sentences, all info on the way) to STDOUT all the time. This makes it work visibly slower when I get the output on the console. I obviously piped the output to /dev/null, but then I thought "could there be something even faster?" It's so much output that it'd really make a difference. And that's the question I'm asking You, because as far as I know there is nothing faster... (But I'm far from being a guru having used linux on a daily basis only last 3 years)

• Validating XML tag by tag

  Hi All I'm having some issues validating some XML against a Schema, using .net and C#. I am using XmlReaderSettings with the ValidationEventHandler. However, this seems to stop catching errors after it has encountered the first error at a particular level within the XML file, instead of checking the next tag at the same level, so basically it does not check each and every tag within the XML file instead skipping a level when it has found an error. I was hoping to get some advice from somebody who has successfully accomplished this type of validation. Thanks very much

  Hey, OK i want to start writing platform independent and open source code (mostly C++). What do i have to consider when doing so? Stop using IDEs and better use makefiles from now on? What do all the "professional" open source coders do (like the guys behind GNU) and what tools do they use? I'm special interested into developing shared libraries. How do you get the cross platform (so working as ".so" on Linux and as ".dll" on Windows)? I'm working on Windows so I'm not that much into all the Linux tools and words, are there good tools to get the same result on Windows as on ?Linux Thanks

• NoSQL or Ehcache caching ?

  I'm building a Route Planner Webapp using Spring/Hibernate/Tomcat and a mysql database, I have a database containing read only data, such as Bus Stop Coordinates, Bus times which is never updated. I'm trying to make the app run faster, each time the application is run it will preform approx 1000 reads to the database to calculate a route. I have setup a Ehcache which greatly improves the read from database times. I'm now setting terracotta + Ehcache distributed caching to share the cache with multiple Tomcat JVMs. This seems a bit complicated. I've tried memcached but it was not performing as fast as ehcache. I'm wondering if a MongoDb or Redis would be better suited. I have no experience with nosql but I would appreciate if anyone has any ideas. What i need is quick access to the read only database.

• Running matlab in the background

  Hi, I am running matlab on 48 virtual machines and would like to automate it. I ssh into the machines then use matlab -r matlab_command > outfile.txt & to get the process to run in the background and run fine when I logout. The only problem is that when i jobs my process is stopped and won't start until I fg ^z bg. Is there a matlab flag so that I can run it in the background without having it stop? Thanks, Mike

  I need low-latency audio in my project, and I know Android 2.3 supports OpenSL ES. I have read documents and sample code and I decide to use Android simple buffer queue to do the play and record. I now try to write a simple application to do the test. However, I have some questions about recording. If I set the recorder stop when it is recording, how do I know the exact number of bytes filled in the last buffer if it is not filled up ? In 1.1 version, the callback function has some parameters about buffer and its filled data, but there is no such parameters in version 1.0.1. Is there any way to get this information ? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated !

  Hello all, I've got a vBoxLayout which contains 3 simple buttons, when I increase the size of the widget containing the layout, the spacing between the buttons increases. I would like to stop this behaviour and keep the buttons in a consistent and compact layout, regardless of the size of the parent widget. • Does UIActivityIndicator require manual threading on iPhone

  I am running creating an iPhone application which performs a costly operation and I wanted to create an activityIndicator to let the user know the application has not frozen. The operation is performed entirely in one event call... so there is no chance for the UI framework to receive control to actually display and animate this indicator. The sample apps which use the UIActivityIndicator (or any other similar animation) start and stop the animation in different events, triggered separately at different stages of the program. Do I need to manually create a separate thread to run my operation in, or is there already default support for this kind of behavior?

• Why would GDI+ colours vary based off whether a tooltip is visible?

  I'm displaying a bitmap using GDI+. After loading the bitmap from a DLL resource I set the background colour (blue - #0000FF) to transparent using TransparentBlt. On Windows Vista and later this works as expected. However, on a Windows XP system we're testing on this only works when any tooltip (e.g. the "title" property in IE, or Windows Explorer's tooltip shown when hovering the mouse over a file, etc) is displayed. The rest of the time the background colour is still blue. Has anyone encountered this before, or know of a way to stop this occurring and for the blue to be properly made transparent?

• NSNotification postNotificationName in AppDelegate but NSNotificationCenter in ViewController?

  I can't get the selector method, receiveChatText, in the NSNotificationCenter to execute and I am wondering if the problem is because the NSNotification postNotificationName is in AppDelegate.m but NSNotificationCenter is in ViewController.m? I.E. can the postNotificationName know that the NSNotificationCenter is in another viewController file or is that something I need to tell it? In a viewController.m I have -(id)init { self = [super init]; if(self){ [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] addObserver:self selector:@selector(receiveChatText:) name:ChatMessageReceived object:nil]; return self; } - (void)receiveChatText:(NSNotification *)note { NSLog(@"received chat text"); } and in the top level AppDelegate.m file I have the following: -(void) didReceiveMessage { [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:ChatMessageReceived object:nil userInfo:nil]; } Any ideas what could stop receiveChatText from being executed when didReceiveMessage is called?

• Why does Printing from Javascript in Air happen out of order?

Is the AIR JS runtime optimizing something? And if so, is there any way to stop it doing that? (The setup function is doing things like changing the resolution to huge*huge so that the print out looks ok.)

• Passing get values mangles my urls

  Just upgraded from 1.3 to 2.0.3 and I'm trying to migrate all the changes. I'm noticing that the following line echo $this->Html->link('Quote', array('controller'=>'crm_quotes', 'action'=>'index', $lead['id'].'/'.$crmContact['CrmContact']['id']), null); builds the url "/crm_quotes/index/15/21". When I click the link I'm taken to url: "/crm_quotes/index/15%2F212 so it's replacing the characters with the html # but it's ultimately breaking the link. When I manually edit the URL to the correct one: "/crm_quotes/index/15/21" the page loads. Can someone enlighten me? Should I be using the url function rather than link? I have a lot of pages that need multiple parameters passed in the url. I was using named parameters but after reading some comments by Mark Story I decided to stop the named parameters as he hinted at their possible removal from future versions.
