• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. • What extra packages are needed by Amarok to transcode to MP3?

  I'm using Amarok 2.6.0, on KDE version 4.9.3, on Kubuntu 12.04. I would like to be able to copy my music onto my MP3 player (in this case, my iPhone 3), but to transcode the tracks as I copy them over. However, when I right-click on the selected track, and choose "Copy to Collection" and select my iPhone, the option to transcode to MP3 is greyed out. What additional packages does Amarok need in order to enable the transcode to MP3 option? Similarly, when Disney Stores decided to reinvent itself, they also came to us for their POS system. "That's opposed to [competing] on price and hawking a doll for $19.99. There is no sales pressure technique." Instead, it's about delivering "a great time." While you're attending the NRF conference in New York next week, you'll definitely want to stop by the new 20,000 square-foot Disney store in Times Square. If you're not attending, you can always check out the videos to get a feel for the stores' vibe. This year we've invited Disney Stores to open a pop-up store within the Oracle Retail booth. There will be lots of items on sale that fit in your suitcase, and there's no better way to demonstrate our POS, including the mobile POS running on an iPod Touch. You should also plan to attend Tuesday morning's super-session The Magic of the Disney Store: An Immersive Retail Experience with Steve Finney. In the case of Apple and Disney, less POS is actually a good thing. In both cases it was important to make the checkout process fast and easy so as not to detract from the overall experience.   I really enjoy listening to music, and because of this i have a lot of sources for it. This is not always a good thing since i have my music stored on a lot of devices ( home computer, work computer, online storage, ipod ) and sometimes its a bit difficult to have the same music in all places. Sometimes i dont have the same songs in all the places, i make a playlist in one place and want it in the other place etc. How do you keep your music in sync on all your devices. PS: i use both windows and linux.

  Right now I'm running Wordpress w/ W3 Cache on nginx with varnish front end. I'm trying to use the WP Touch Pro plugin for wordpress to display mobile sites, but it is not working. Shows the desktop theme still. I've put the mobile user agents in the rejected user agents box in w3 cache. • No GUI boot; startx error, I suspect no filesystem corruption.

  Till yesterday, my Ubuntu 9.10 was working fine. I had watched a movie using vlc. I had also charged my ipod using the laptop. Today, when I started it, I automatically booted into command line. There seems to be no filesystem corruption etc as I can view/open (text) files. Before the CLI appeared, the screen blinked with a cursor, then the white Ubuntu logo flashed, and then I got the CLI login prompt. After logging in, if I try startx, to start gnome, I get the following error after a few seconds: giving up xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error* The same error comes up, even if I use sudo, or if I change my directory to '/' before using startx, and also when, from the grub, using the recovery mode option to load into CLI, and then trying startx. On trying command 'xinit', I get "Server error" Also, on trying GDM, I get 2 errors. I cannot connect to the internet in this state. Thanks for any help. I am using Dell Inspiron 1440, no special graphics card.

  At my company we have Exchange 2k3 with OWA being public, serving up Activesync and webmail. There is no pop3 or imap support from our admins. Outlook 2k3's RPC over HTTP is also disabled Is there a desktop client that can connect to Activesync or OWA? If my ipod touch can connect to activesync, why can't my pc? I'd preferably like a linux daemon that could simply forward emails to my gmail address, but I guess I'll take what I can get. • How to organize music files?

  I'm trying to re-organize my music files. I copied them from my iPod before it died, so they have funky names, like DGEDH.mp3. I tried using a Windows utility to rename them from their ID3 tags, but it didn't work very well--it created a bunch of folders (one for each album in theory, but more like 7 or 8 in reality) and renamed the files with non-English characters. Most of the files are MP3s, but there's at least one or two other file types as well. I'd like to copy them to a new folder and try a Ubuntu utility to rename and re-organize them. In Windows, this would be straightforward--I'd use the Search function (with no file name specified) to list all of the files in the main folder and its subfolders, then drag and drop them to the new folder. What's the easiest way to accomplish the same thing in Ubuntu? The GUI search doesn't seem to accept wildcard characters, and I don't remember all of the file types I have, so it's not as simple as searching for "mp3". Many thanks!

I recently came across littleBits while watching a TED video of their creator. I was immediately hooked. It seemed like the perfect blend of simplicity and self-learning that I was looking to get my kids into electronics. • Huge area of stuck pixels

  A toddler slammed down my laptop screen while an iPod was laying on top of the keyboard. The damage resulted in a massive area of stuck pixels on the laptop screen, approximately 2 inches by 10 inches in area. I've tried running various programs that rapidly flick the pixels in different colors, as well as massaging the screen with heat and also without heat. These are the standard methods I read about for fixing a stuck pixel. But none of the online articles I read said how to fix a huge area of pixels, not just single pixels. What else can I try to get the many pixels unstuck? My computer is no longer under warranty and I don't want to buy a new one.

• How to get iTunes to recognize that certain ID3 tags have been removed from files?

  I use MusicBrainz Picard to manage the ID3 tags on my MP3 collection and iTunes for playing them and managing my iPod. I have Picard set to remove the Composer tag from any files that don't also contain the word "Classical" in the Genre tag. I've run Picard and it has removed the Composer tag from many of my files. However, iTunes keeps displaying the old value of the Composer field. I have tried right-clicking on the file to update, choosing "Get Info" and clicking OK. This has no effect on the Composer field when it has been removed entirely; it only refreshes the displayed value when it has been changed from one non-empty value to another. How can I get iTunes to stop showing the old values for tags that have been removed? Please note I don't want to lose other iTunes metadata such as ratings and play counts, so removing the files from the iTunes library and re-adding them is not an option.

• My Obligatory IPad Post

  I've had my IPad for about a week now. So I thought I'd write some thoughts down based on my initial experiences. Here are my initial take-aways: 1 - Netflix OnDemand - I'm a movie junkie. I'm now more apt to just start a movie as background sound for my workday (I telecommute - so except for the occasional bark from my dog, it's awfully quiet here if I don't have something going). 2 - The Email Client is really nice and I'm as fast or faster typing when I have the wireless keyboard engaged. Even with onscreen keyboard - I'm already close to 75% of desktop speed 3 - The battery life is incredible - I think this is the first case where a mobile device actually under-promised on battery 4 - It totally has killed the notion of using a normal PC for my wife and mother-in-law - neither of which had wanted an iPhone/iPod Touch or really any Apple device until they got to play with my iPad. The concept of - instant on, easy to hold and touch-based navigation has them hooked. Heck, it has me hooked. My ultimate goal is to be able to have it at least replace the need to take my netbook with me on the road. I haven't had a chance to complete my testing on that front yet - between work, my wife traveling (for a change) and now my wife home sick - I haven't had time to just play with it. • Getting iTunes to play third party AAC files

  I have a library filled with some old MP3 files and I'm in the process of changing them all to AAC for the better sound quality. Obviously I can't just create AAC versions of the files I already have because they would sound worse (lossy compression to converted to more lossy compression), so I'm going to their source and downloading them in a lossless form and using a third party to make them into AAC. Apparently iTunes will not handle AAC files that aren't made with iTunes. Is there a way around this? I've looked at third party programs and would be willing to use them, but since they all require the iTunes/iPod/iEverything driver, I don't know if they would still prevent my files or not. Also before you jump on my back about pirating, these files are from old CDs that I lost years ago. I paid for them. Thanks.

I have had a look and I know there are some really limited features on the phone itself, and a variety of filtered browsers. However, none of them are really hitting what I want.   Hello, I have a pretty standard Acer desktop (I guess a predecessor of the X5900 model). when playing mp3 / radio / youtube clips, the sound level is changing WITHIN the clip, highly annoying. in the case of an mp3, the same mp3 will play at a constant sound level on my iPod, so clearly an issue with the computer. problem existed under vista, I upgraded to windows 7 and have the same issue. I guess it might be soundcard-related, so updated the drivers, no luck neither. any idea ? thanks

• Multiple WAPs: Bandwidth, Frequency Considerations

  The router in my LAN closet does 2 and 5 GHz. In the kitchen, I have a single-band 2 GHz WAP, and in the garden shed I have another single-band 2 GHz WAP. All are set to Bandwidth = 40 MHz, Wireless Network Mode = N-Only. The kitchen WAP and the LAN closet router both come up with multiple bars on my smart phone from almost anywhere in the house. The garden shed WAP will register one bar... but only sometimes. The Questions: Are these things in danger of butting heads? Should I re-set them to Bandwidth = 20 MHz? Bandwidth = Auto? Are there any tools that I could use on an Android smart phone, iPod, or WiFi-enabled laptop to make my own analysis?

They clearly favour M4A (AAC). When to choose, right now, the 'best' audio codec to encode music to, which would you choose to achieve maximal independence of portable device vendors: MP3 or M4A? (I am well aware of Ogg (vorbis): no market (maybe this changes with HTML5 and more WebKit on portable devices), I am also aware of FLAC: I dont want to discuss long term storage.)

• wireless dropping out

  My wireless network connection is dropping out and its driving me nuts. It is weird because it happens at totally random intervals and other devices work while my computer has been dropped. Both my USB dongle and wifi card randomly disconnect from the router and I am unable to connect for a couple of minutes. It is especially irritating because two different adapters are failing at the same time, sounds like a software problem to me, but where? Both my laptop and iPod remain connected when the connection drops. What on earth is happening? I doubt its the router because the other devices would disconnect as well.

  Related: Is there an alternative to iTunes? (for Windows or Mac) thats free? I'm looking for a free, lightweight iTunes replacement for my Windows XP Netbook. iTunes itself is slow and bloated. The software should be able to read the iTunes library, espeacially the ratings of the songs and the intelligent playlists. I don't need the sync to an iPod because I don't own one, I used iTunes only as a jukebox. I also don't need the store, the podcasts and all the other things iTunes provides. Does someone know a good alternative?

• nginx caching per user agent

  I'm currently using nginx as reverse proxy with caching enabled. However, the main site has two different layouts, depending on the user-agent (mobile or not).   I know Windows XP and previous had an rsm.exe file in the <root>\windows\system32 folder that could be used to manage media. I used this command in batch files and from the command line to eject external disks (iPod, CF cardreader, etc.). This utility appears not to be included in Windows 7, and I wonder if there is some replacement utility that will allow the same thing. I've been unable to find any such thing. I'm aware of the 3rd party utilities; this question is only about what is included with Windows 7.
