• Service Pack 1 for Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC just released

  We just released the first service pack for the Q1 2010 release of Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC. As you may have guessed this is mostly a maintenance release addressing all reported bugfixes. It is important to note that the service pack will be available only to licensed users. We will update the open source version only for major releases. However if a critical bug has been found we will publish builds in the forum so no worries.   Whats new Everything is described in the release notes. • maxItemsInObjectGraph limit required to be changed for server and client

  We have a wcf service, that expects to return a huge XML data. It worked ok in testing, but in production it failed with error  "Maximum number of items that can be serialized or deserialized in an object graph is '65536'. Change the object graph or increase the MaxItemsInObjectGraph quota."The MSDN article about   dataContractSerializer xml configuration  element  correctly  describes maxItemsInObjectGraph attribute default as 65536, but documentation for of the DataContractSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph property and DataContractJsonSerializer.MaxItemsInObjectGraph Property are talking about Int32.MaxValue, which causes confusion, in particular because Google shows properties articles before configuration articles.When we changed the value in WCF service configuration, it didn't help, because the similar change must be ALSO done on client.There are similar posts:http://stackoverflow.com/questions/6298209/how-to-fix-maxitemsinobjectgraph-error/6298356#6298356You need to set the MaxItemsInObjectGraph on the dataContractSerializer using a behavior on both the client and service. • Error connecting ESX 5.0.0 to domain

  I am trying to connect an ESX 5.0.0 to our Domain Controler, in order to give a Domain group specific roles security. But I do not see any groups after the host connects to the domain. Under Configuration - Authentication Services - I connected the host to the domain: I created the role I wanted, with the selected approved features But when I want to add a permission to a set of VM's, I can not see "my domain" on the drop down, only the: "localhost" How do I see "my domain" on the Domain drop down - so I can select the domain group to give the role to? To note: I followed the instructions to connect to the domain form VMware site.

• Outlook 2010 + Move IMAP PST file = Outlook data file cannot be accessed

  I set up a new IMAP account in Outlook 2010. It works but creates IMAP PST file in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. I want the file on my data drive in D:\Users\User\Documents\Outlook Files (the same folder where outlook automatically creates the local Outlook PST. I followed the instructions here to move the IMAP PST. Testing the account (send/receive) works fine, but if I try to manually send an email I get error 0x8004010F Outlook data file cannot be accessed. I've tried repairing the PST using SCANPST (it always finds errors), and deleting and recreating the account but I get the same error. If I move the PST file back, it works again, but this is not ideal. Note: I don't think this is a duplicate of this question as the cause is different and the solution does not help.

• In Excel format number with optional decimal places

  Simple: I have numbers in cells in excel. I want the numbers formatted so that if they have decimal places they show to a maximum of 2DP and if they have no decimal places it doesn't show any. For example. 15 should be formatted as 15 NOT 15.00 14.3453453 should be formatted as 14.35 12.1 should be formatted as 12.1 0 should be formatted as 0 The closest custom format code I've come up with is 0.##. Unfortunately this formats 15.00 as 15. (note the extra decimal place). Edit: To further complicate the issues, the spreadsheet is a result of an export from SQL Server Reporting Services. So no macros are possible. Oh well, it looks like 0.## is my best bet, and they can just live with the extra period.

• X crashes and GNOME loses all its configuration

  About every 3 days on my desktop (always on), X crashes, gdm restarts and it dumps me at a login screen. When I log in Gnome appears to have lost a lot of its settings: it plays sounds in weird places, UI elements look like they're from the 90s (GTK+ defaults) and it's generally pretty hideous. Note everything works fine. It's not like my profile doesn't exist because I can browse the internet fine (Firefox knows my bookmarks, history, passwords, etc) and my desktop is unscathed (apart from the icon theme). Manually restarting gdm doesn't fix this. I have to do a full reboot. Now I'm almost certain that this is a nvidia issue causing X to baulk (I've seen similarish threads on nvnews) and I'm happy with that (my fault for running their latest drivers all the time). What I'm concerned about is why Gnome looks so fugly. Is there anything I can do to force it to reload its settings without restarting the whole computer. Restarting is an issue for me as I run several daemons that other computers on the network depend upon. This is what I mean by ugly/fugly... Look at that scroll bar!

• Configuring an Engenius 3500

  The title speaks to only half of the issue: the other half are the settings in Ubuntu and the sequences therein. The computer in this issue does receive internet with the external antenna jack at the back being fed with a simple magnetic base antenna designed for putting on the roof of an automobile. However, that signal is weak and the Engenius with an external antenna (Rootenna ~15db gain) and ehternet wire will supply a stronger, faster signal. I've set the Engenius to the desired source and entered the correct WEP password. The lights on the Engenius indicate that it's connected to the access point. At the Ubuntu side of this I've worked to no avail changing settings with "Edit Connections" to the point I'm Ask(ing)Ubuntu for help. I have and have RTFM for Engenius 3500 There is an embarrassing side note to this issue: At one time I had the Engenius working! It seems that I can't recall the settings and sequences I used way back when. And I may as well confess to not knowing the Command Line. I'm a GUI guy. Thank you for your time, Doug

• iptables, allow access from certain MAC addresses

  Presently, I limit which clients can access my server by using IP addresses via iptables, only approved IP addresses can connect. However, the problem with this is if a client is on a laptop and goes to a different location, they can no longer connect because the IP has changed. For a variety of reasons, iptables authentication is the only option I have. Is there a way to restrict access by device instead of ip address. For instance, only allow certain MAC address to connect to port 5000. Is it possible to do this via iptables? Note, the computers are not on the same network, they could be connecting from anywhere in the world.

  I would like to import my calendar from my company Exchange 2010 server as a new calendar in my private Google account. The primary use is to easy my planning when at home with my laptop. I already have access to both the Google and Exchange calendars on my Android phone, but the size of the screen makes it rather difficult to plan anything serious. Note that I run OSX on my laptop I would prefer a Internet based solution to any software on my own laptop. I do not want an Outlook add-in I do not want to include the work related events in my main calendar I do not want a mobile solution I can pay for the solution

• Komodo Edit - How to disable the 'Linter' for a language?

  I've been using Komodo Edit to work on a Django project. It works great except for one little annoyance: When I am editing Django template files, Komodo likes to put red squiggly lines underneath the first HTML tag that follows a Django tag, because it thinks it is an invalid HTML doc (although it isn't, it just has Django template tags/filters in it). Note that this red squiggly line is called a "Linter error" in the docs that I can find. Is there some way to turn off this red squiggly for only a specific type of language? It's nice to have when working on Python code but it's annoying to have a red squiggly on every single one of my Django templates.

• Community TFS Build Manager available for Visual Studio 2012 RC

  I finally got around to push out a version of the Community TFS Build Manager that is compatible with Visual Studio 2012 RC. Unfortunately I had to do this as a separate extension, it references different versions of the TFS assemblies and also some properties and methods that the 2010 version uses are now obsolete in the TFS 2012 API. To download it, just open the Extension Manager, select Online and search for TFS Build:   You can also download it from this link: http://visualstudiogallery.msdn.microsoft.com/cfdb84b4-285e-4eeb-9fa9-dad9bfe2cd10 The functionality is identical to the 2010 version, the only difference is that you can’t start it from the Team Explorer Builds node (since the TE has been completely rewritten and the extension API’s are not yet published). So, to start it you must use the Tools menu: We will continue shipping updates to both versions in the future, as long as it functionality that is compatible with both TFS 2010 and TFS 2012. You might also note that the color scheme used for the build manager doesn’t look as good with the VS2012 theme….   Hope you will enjoy the tool in Visual Studio 2012 as well. Note that the modem is currently able to display its configuration page at 169.254.1.1, i.e. even while it is in bridge mode.

  Hy all, first off all, don't yell that i shouldn't start with it, i just want to know how that works... The thing is, how does the engine of an webgame works. A game like tribalwars, grepolis and forge of empires. How does that keeping alive work. I mean, a user is building an building, and quit the browser... The building is build even when the session of the user is expired. but the points of the user is updated when the building is finished... So how does that works. What do you guys think? do they have some kind of cronjob that is fired every second, and that walks throug the database, and search for finished buildings, and update's the stuff? or do you guys think that they do it difrent?!? • A quick tip for those working with the Windows Phone 7 AD SDK.

  One thing that I’ve noticed in several apps in the Windows Phone 7 marketplace is the ad chopping off on the right hand side. I decided that my next Windows Phone 7 app will be ad supported so why not sign up for the Advertising SDK and investigate this issue. *Note: If you want to see this in an actual app then download the free app called “Road Rage”. So here is an example of what I am talking about: You will notice that the right hand side of the AD is chopped off using the default ad banner. You can see the border on the left hand side clearly. So, what exactly is going on? Let’s take a look at this in the designer. From this image we can see it clearer, the margin of the grid that the ad is contained in needs to be removed. By default, the ContentPanel in a Windows Phone Page has a margin already set on it. See below for an example of this: <!--ContentPanel - place additional content here--> <Grid x:Name="ContentPanel" Grid.Row="1" Margin="12,0,12,0"> </Grid> If you simply remove that margin then your ad will display properly as shown below. It’s strange that I’ve seen this in multiple WP7 applications in the marketplace. If you are trying to make money off Ads, you would probably want to make sure the full ad is displayed. • How can I view and sort after the page count for multiple PDF files in a Windows file explorer?

  I unsuccessfully used the "pages" feature in Windows Explorer, as well as in Directory Opus 10 and Free Commander XT (which I installed just for that reason, to try it out) to display the page count of multiple PDFs in a folder. All my PDF's are free to edit, i.e. not write-protected. I don't understand why any PDF reader can display the (correct) page number, but none of the file explorers can? (In the "details" view of course.) The only documents whose page count is displayed are MS Word documents. Do I have to use Adobe Bridge? (I didn't try it.) On a side-note: Did that change in Windows 8? Initial research: Google search was unsuccessful, the only slightly related SE topic I found was "How to count pages in multiple PDF files?".

• Dark NetBeans

  Let's make NetBeans IDE look like this. Not saying it's a nice color or anything, just that it's possible to do so: I changed the coloring in the Java editor by going to Tools | Options, then chose "Fonts & Colors", then selected the "Norway Today" profile and changed the background setting to Dark Gray. Next, I put this themes.xml file into the "config" folder of the NetBeans IDE user directory, which you can identify as such by going to Help | About in the IDE. Go to the exact location defined by "User directory" in Help | About, and then go to the "config" folder within that folder: The "config" folder of the user directory is the readable/writable root of the NetBeans IDE virtual filesystem. If a themes.xml file is found there, it is used, as described here. Then, in netbeans.conf file, which is not in the NetBeans user directory but in the NetBeans installation directory, within its "etc" folder, I added the following to "netbeans_default_options": -J-Dnetbeans.useTheme=true --laf Metal The first of these enables usage of the themes.xml file, i.e., it notifies NetBeans IDE at startup to load the themes.xml file and to apply the content to the relevant UI components, while the second is needed because most/all of the themes only work if you're using the Metal Look and Feel. Note: I must add that in most cases, whatever it is you're trying to achieve via a themes.xml file can probably be achieved in a different, and better, way. The themes.xml mechanism has been there forever, but is not actively supported or tested, though it may work for the specific thing you're trying to do anyway. For example, if you're trying to change the background color of a TopComponent, use the paintComponent method of the TopComponent instead of using a themes.xml file.

• Unable to remove/hide icons from desktop folder

  I wish to hide some windows icons from my desktop folder1, but cannot. When I click delete, it says they will be deleted from my desktop (which they already are), but they remain visible in the desktop folder, which is where I wish them removed. Is there any way I can remove these? (I always use Win+E which really lets me get to all of these easy enough). Offending icons: Libraries, Homegroup, User folder, Computer, Network, Control Panel, and Recycle Bin. For those who might be wondering why, I find myself in this folder a bit to often (including when uploading a file), and find these nothing but clutter, especially as these always default to the top. Thanks for your help! 1 By desktop folder, I mean the folder you would see by going to "My Computer" and clicking "Desktop" on the top left under Favorites. Note: Changing my "Desktop Icon Settings" under "Personalize" does not affect the desktop folder, but rather just the desktop view.

• Case studies for successful service (project) based software development businesses without constant overtime from its employees [closed]

  I work for an IT company that is primarily services (project) based rather than product based. All software engineers are salaried. The company has set new expectations that everyone should work 48 hours per week instead of 40. Note, this isn't occasional overtime due to crunches. This is the new 40. The reasoning is that this enables the company to provide benefits to its employees such as monetary incentives and training because the company is more profitable. more hours worked = more billable hours = larger profit I understand the need for profitability and the occasional crunch time and have put in the extra hours when it was needed and beneficial to the project. However, I am also very sensitive to work life balance and have raised my concerns about the the new expectation. My employer is open to other methods to increase profitability so I hold hope that we can turn things around before it becomes a horrible place to work. How does a services based company become more profitable without increasing the number of hours expected from it's salaried employees? Are there any case studies showing the pros and cons of consistent overtime? Are there any case studies for a successful service based business model (for software development companies) that does not require consistent overtime from its employees?

  I'm trying to write a custom redirect rule for some testing purposes on 2 domains with exactly same site. The code I am using is: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} !^1\.2\.3\.4$ RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^.*site1.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.site2.com/$1 [R=301,L] What I want is to redirect all requests for site1 to site2 except for requests from IP address 1.2.3.4. But currently requests from that IP are also being redirected to site2. Is there something I've missed in settings? ( note: both domains are on the same shared hosting account )

  I am trying to setup a MySQL server and when I went to create a second user it wouldn't give it permissions for the database. I can connect fine as long as I don't specify a database. Access denied for user 'user'@'localhost' to database 'diddata' The connection details are: { 'host' : 'localhost', 'user' : 'user', 'password' : 'password' , 'database': 'diddata' }; And to create the DB and table I did: CREATE DATABASE IF NOT exists diddata; CREATE USER 'user'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; GRANT ALL ON user.* TO 'user'@'localhost'; Note that I've changed the username and password in this question. I've already checked the privileges in MySQL workbench and they are there.

  I have two data disks that were, heretofore, in a mobo RAID configuration in Windows 7. They are now separate AHCI disks, visible in Computer Management. How to I go about making them a single mirrored volume in Windows? Note: The data is backed up up on two other separate disks, but it's a fair amount of work to do a restore (over 120'000 files, and I have to reset permissions). Note2: Currently the two disks are identical, and I can use the content of either one for this.

• How do you tell if advice from a senior developer is bad?

  Recently, I started my first job as a junior developer and I have a more senior developer in charge of mentoring me in this small company. However, there are several times when he would give me advice on things that I just couldn't agree with (it goes against what I learned in several good books on the topic written by the experts, questions I asked on some Q&A sites also agree with me) and given our busy schedule, we probably have no time for long debates. So far, I have been trying to avoid the issue by listening to him, raising a counterpoint based on what I've learned as current good practices. He raises his original point again (most of the time he will say best practice, more maintainable but just didn't go further), I take a note (since he didn't raise a new point to counter my counterpoint), think about it and research at home, but don't make any changes (I'm still not convinced). But recently, he approached me yet again, saw my code and asked me why haven't I changed it to his suggestion. This is the 3rd time in 2--3 weeks. As a junior developer, I know that I should respect him, but at the same time I just can't agree with some of his advice. Yet I'm being pressured to make changes that I think will make the project worse. Of course as an inexperienced developer, I could be wrong and his way might be better, it may be 1 of those exception cases. My question is: what can I do to better judge if a senior developer's advice is good, bad or maybe it's (good but outdated in today context)? And if it is bad/outdated, what tactics can I use to not implement it his way despite his 'pressures' while maintaining the fact that I respect him as a senior?

• USB HD Freezes Windows Explorer

  I recently purchased a "Seagate STBX1000200 1TB Expansion 2.5 inch External Hard Drive". It has been working without problems until recently. When i plug the device into a USB port the device is recognised as it appears in the device manager but when i go to Windows Explorer and try to open it (or right click on it) it hangs/freezes windows explorer. Please note i am using Windows 7 Professional. I have already tried various things without success after searching for people with similar problems. I did read that it could be a problem with how the computer assigns a drive letter. But whrn i go to disk management (when running as an administrator) it hangs and displays the following message: Connecting to virtual disk service I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice. • Should I always encapsulate an internal data structure entirely?

  Please consider this class: class ClassA{ private Thing[] things; // stores data // stuff omitted public Thing[] getThings(){ return things; } } This class exposes the array it uses to store data, to any client code interested. I did this in an app I'm working on. I had a ChordProgression class that stores a sequence of Chords (and does some other things). It had a Chord[] getChords() method that returned the array of chords. When the data structure had to change (from an array to an ArrayList), all client code broke. This made me think - maybe the following approach is better: class ClassA{ private Thing[] things; // stores data // stuff omitted public Thing[] getThing(int index){ return things[index]; } public int getDataSize(){ return things.length; } public void setThing(int index, Thing thing){ things[index] = thing; } } Instead of exposing the data structure itself, all of the operations offered by the data structure are now offered directly by the class enclosing it, using public methods that delegate to the data structure. When the data structure changes, only these methods have to change - but after they do, all client code still works. Note that collections more complex than arrays might require the enclosing class to implement even more than three methods just to access the internal data structure. Is this approach common? What do you think of this? What downsides does it have other? Is it reasonable to have the enclosing class implement at least three public methods just to delegate to the inner data structure?

• How do I cluster strings based on a relation between two strings?

  If you don't know WEKA, you can try a theoretical answer. I don't need literal code/examples... I have a huge data set of strings in which I want to cluster the strings to find the most related ones, these could as well be seen as duplicate. I already have a set of couples of string for which I know that they are duplicate to each other, so, now I want to do some data mining on those two sets. The result I'm looking for is a system that would return me the possible most relevant couples of strings for which we don't know yet that they are duplicates, I believe that I need clustering for this, which type? Note that I want to base myself on word occurrence comparison, not on interpretation or meaning. Here is an example of two string of which we know they are duplicate (in our vision on them): The weather is really cold and it is raining. It is raining and the weather is really cold. Now, the following strings also exist (most to least relevant, ignoring stop words): Is the weather really that cold today? Rainy days are awful. I see the sunshine outside. The software would return the following two strings as most relevant, which aren't known to be duplicate: The weather is really cold and it is raining. Is the weather really that cold today? Then, I would mark that as duplicate or not duplicate and it would present me with another couple. How do I go to implement this in the most efficient way that I can apply to a large data set?
