• OpenOffice 3 takes forever to open

  I'm on Fedora 14, and OpenOffice 3.3.0 takes a long time to open (about 30 seconds, sometimes less). It isn't a CPU or disk performance issue, it's just simply a very long delay before the program opens. It appears to be a frivolous network connection timing out. According to Wireshark, it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none) which fails, after which it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none).mylitestream.com (dulcimer is my hostname, and LiteStream is my ISP) Is there a way to work around this bug in OpenOffice?

• MSA20 RAID5 recovery failure due to URE on another disk

  I have MSA20 with one disk array on 12 disks and 3 LUNs on it (each raid 5). A few days ago one disk in one of the LUNs was failed and I replaced it. But raid5 recovering failed at 13% and I see in ADU report that one of the disk has "Errors Logged = 5566" and according SCSI specifications it is URE (Sense Code=0x11, Qualifier=0x00). In serial log I also see URE error. It seems that Raid5 can't be rebuilt because of this. So I have a few questions: Is there a way to recover raid5 still? If I leave new disk that was replaced and remove disk with URE, will other LUNs be destroyed or just failed LUN? If all LUNs will fail what is the sense to make each LUN with own raid on one disk group array if 2 failed disk can destroy all? As I understand the preferred way is to create one disk array for one LUN in future and not one array with few LUNs? Thanks.

  I'm a first-time n00b on Mac (but have been doing computers since before PC's). This Mac has 2 VLANs, vlan0 in IPv4, vlan1 in IPv6. Safari can surf via IPv4 squid proxy OK. Safari can surf via IPv6 natively, if I switch off the proxy. How do I set up the Settings - Network - Interface - Advanced - Proxies to "bypass" IPv6? Current Settings include variations along the lines of ... "*.local, 10.0.0.0/8, 192.168.0.0/16, 172.16.0.0/12 , ::, ipv6 " but don't work as expected. • Moving mails from SBS 2008 to SBS 2011

  we are going to upgrade server from SBS 2008 to a new hardware server with SBS 2011. Due to non-experience in Server Migration (eg, answer file), we have decided to choose Clean Install. We have 12 users so that's not too bad. The most challenge problem is to move over all the emails for each user, some user have 5GB inbox. The one method I know is to login to each user account and export the emails to PST file using Outlook 2007. Then connect to new SBS 2011 and import the PST into new inbox. Do we have any other better/quicker ways? Thanks

  I have 1 Static IP from my ISP, 58.59.60.61 I have 3 local physical web servers: Win2008 IIS 7, local IP 192.168.10.11, mydomain.com Ubuntu Apache2, local IP 192.168.10.12, subdomain1.mydomain.com Win2003 IIS 6, local IP 192.168.10.13, subdomain2.mydomain.com I have 1 domain name, mydomain.com. It is configured this way: Host(A), @, 58.59.60.61 Host(A), subdomain1, 58.59.60.61 Host(A), subdomain2, 58.59.60.61 My router is a pfSense box. It forwards all port 80 traffic to a group alias called "WebServers," which is my 3 web server IP's. This setup should work right? I believe I need to set the "host header names" in my web servers. In IIS I know how to do this. How do I do this in Apache2?

• Excel graph: turn stacked bar chart into part bullet chart

  I've a simple data file that has one column of actuals and another of target against categories. I would like to turn the TARGET figure into a 'Bullet marker'. I've seen it done on other graphs but I'm struggling with the category column being overwritten with the xy axis values. Or if I get close to doing it then the xy markers are not central. I've checked out Peltier but his examples are based on even more comlicated data than mine, so the steps required didn't seem to match up. Help greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike. • Why is group write permission ignored in Ubuntu?

  I want my user to have full access to the local Apache root folder, and I also want the Apache user to have full access to the same folder. What I did was create a new group called DevGroup and I added my user and www-data there. Also I changed the permissions to 770 to allow full group access. But now it won't allow me or the Apache user any kind of access to the folder.   I have a PowerShell script that deploys about 12 web parts. They have all been created through Visual Studio 2010 and are being deployed to SharePoint 2010. I am getting the following error when running Install-SPSolution for one of my web parts: Install-SPSolution : This solution contains no resources scoped for a Web application and cannot be deployed to a particular Web application. Can someone help me debug this? Every other Install-SPSolution command uses -AllWebApplications, and I do not want to specify the web application directly using -URL.   Hi I'm performance tuning a DB server its a Dell R710 there is a very significant I/O bottleneck. Unfortunately the server was purchased with the 6 x 3.5 inch sata configuration which doesn't give me the leeway I need to address the issue. Before going to DAS does anyone know if it is possible to purchase a replacement front drive enclosure ? • Source of Unexplained Requests in Server Logs

  Hi, I am baffled by some entries in my server logs, specifically the web-server logs. Other than normal, expected traffic, I have noticed three types of request errors (eg 404, etc.): Broken links, ie links from old, external pages that point to pages that are no longer here Sequences of probes, ie some jerk trying to hack in by scanning my server for a series of exploitable admin type pages and such What appear to be completely random requests for things that have never existed on the server or even have anything to do with the server, and appear by themselves (ie not a series of requests like the probes) Could it somehow be a mistyped URL or IP? That’s about the only thing that I can think of, but still, how could I get a request on say, foobar.dyndns.org (12.34.56.78) for something like www.wantsfly.com/prx2.php or /MNG/LIVE or http://ant.dsabuse.com/abc.php?auth=45V456b09m&strPassword=X%5BMTR__CBZ%40VA&nLoginId=43. (Those are a few actual requests from my logs.) Can someone please explain scenario three to me? Thanks.

So is it the case with all the other Linux flavors like Fedora, Ubuntu, etc. If a USB device is automatically mounted will it always go to the /media directory?

• Cisco 877 as PPPoA/PPPoE bridge (no routing) - how to make it listen to IP for management?

  I have a Cisco 877 configured to bridge ADSL with PPPoA to PPPoE on Vlan1. This works fine, but in this mode the only way I can configure the Cisco is via the serial console. I'd like to have the Cisco also listen on an IP address so I can telnet/ssh into it. I think the right way to go about this would be via bridge irb, but I'm not sure exactly how (or if that's even the right direction). IOS is 12.4T and my current config (cut down to essentials) is: no ip routing no ip cef ! ! interface ATM0 no ip address no ip route-cache no atm ilmi-keepalive pvc 0/38 encapsulation aal5snap ! dsl operating-mode auto bridge-group 1 ! ! interface Vlan1 no ip address no ip route-cache bridge-group 1 Just setting an IP address on Vlan1 didn't have the desired effect, but surely this must be possible somehow (the Draytek Vigor 120 even does it by default).

• Media player only works as administrator?

  It seems I can only get Media Player 12 to work as administrator. If I run it normally (I am in the administrator group on my local PC) and right click on Music, and choose Manage Music Library. Media Player will sit and think for 5 or so seconds, then just not do anying, no dialog, no error. If I run as administator I can now get into the Manage Music Library dialog and add my a public folder containing my music. I've even tried granting everyone access to the public folder. One thing to note is that I have recently set up a domain controller and added my PC to the domain. With my local account I never noticed this problem, but I've since created a domain account and am now seeing this issue. I can't find much difference between the local and domain accounts - both are in the administrator group. Why would WMP require run as administrator? OS, Windows 7 64bit

• FFmpeg creates emtpy (black) frames

  I have a set of images from a timelapse shot (172 JPG files) that I want to convert into a movie. I tried several parameters with FFmpeg, but all I get is a video with black frames (though it has the expected length). ffmpeg -f image2 -vcodec mjpeg -y -i img_%03d.jpg timelapse2.mpg The command above creates this video: http://sdm-net.org/data/timelapse2.mpg What I'm expecting is something like this (created with Time Lapse Assembler.app): https://vimeo.com/39038362 - This is my fallback option, but I'd really like to create timelapse movies from a script. • Backup and restore MySQL database without system access

  Hi guys, I am trying to move a database from 1 provider to another, the problem is that I don't have system access at either end (ie, no ssh), so I cannot use a mysqldump. I have already tried using MySQL Administrator, the backup took about 45 minutes, but when it came to restoring it was moving at a snails pace, and estimating 12+ hours. This is a live app so I need to keep the downtime to an absolute minimum. The database consists of 35 tables, a mixture of MyISAM and InnoDB, the whole thing comes to about 4.4GB. The source and destination databases are both running on very powerful servers. Any suggestions on a quick way of doing this will be gratefully received. Thanks

• Why using Acrobat 10 resaving a PDF file that was 4MB will become 3MB?

  I had some PDF files and just try to open it and do some highlighting using Acrobat 10 (also called Adode Reader X)... After highlighting, I save the file (using a different filename), and now the file change from 4MB to 3MB... is it just compression? Or making the images have lower clarity? (thought I cannot see any difference). What is the reason? If it is just compression, then why wasn't it done before, as winzip technology is quite mature more than even 10, 12 year ago.

• Disabling the command enter shortcut on Mac Entourage.

  It seems like disabling a shortcut should not be such a big deal, but I cannot seem to be able to do it for any shortcuts and specifically not for the combination that I keep hitting by mistake, every single day. The smaller space bar makes it very easy to hit the command key by mistake, and the return is a commonly used key when typing. I keep sending important e-mails before I am done typing, or worse, before I am done editing. I do not necessarily want to disable all the shortcuts, but that one for sure. The choices for changing anything in Entourage seem very limited. [Entourage for Mac 2008. Version 12.2.8. (101117) ESD] It is easy enough just to hit "send." This short cut causes a lot more trouble than it saves. Help.

• What settings to use for fastest reloading of a MySQL backup?

  I have a MySQL database which dumps to a 3.5 GB backup (mysqldump) in about 10 minutes. But reloading this backup on a standby / test server takes upwards of 12 hours. What are some settings that would maximize reloading performance? The most promising appear to be innodb_buffer_pool_size, innodb_additional_mem_pool_size, and innodb_log_buffer_size... but I'm reaching the limits of my trial-and-error approach. Which of these settings "should" be the most important? Through trial-and-error I was not able to get more than 70% CPU utilization and 63% memory utilization. I'd like both at 100% during a reload. All tables are InnoDB.

• Is there a way to submit a batch of commands to a Cisco router and have them execute from the router?

  I need to change the configuration of a remote (6 hours' drive) client's Cisco 871 (IOS 12.4.15T) from my location because of some new internet service at his location. To be more precise, I need to change the default route, ip address of the outside interface (Fa4) and disable the PPPoE setup there. Unfortunately, doing any of this will (obviously) break the connection to the router. I do not have an out-of-band management modem set up (I know, I know). Is there any way to enter the commands I need to have run and have them execute one after the other, from a file on flash:? I have never tried anything like that before. Essentially a DOS-style batch file is exactly what I need. Nothing like it seems to be out there except using kron to execute CLI commands, but that is specified here as only taking EXEC commands, not configuration ones. Is there hope, or do I travel?

  I am trying to use checkinstall to build a package from source code. However, when i run checkinstall , it ask : /root/rpmbuild has no source directory, please write the path to the rpm source directory tree. i am running on fedora 12 and system was installed through kickstart via repository of dvd of fc12. I was not aware of the rpm source directory during the installation. so how can i check whether rpm source has been installed or not. if not, how to make the rpm source directory so that i can please the checkinstall and build the package successfully. or can i bypass it? thanks a lot
