• Security Alert for CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887 Released

  Hi, this is Eric Maurice again! Oracle just released a Security Alert to announce the availability of fixes for two vulnerabilities (CVE-2010-0886 and CVE-2010-0887) affecting Oracle Java SE and Oracle Java For Business. Both vulnerabilities only affect Java when running in a 32-bit web browser. These vulnerabilities are not present in Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications and do not impact any Oracle server based software. The first vulnerability (CVE-2010-0886) affects the Java Deployment Toolkit (version 6 update 10 through 19) on Windows only. The second vulnerability (CVE-2010-0887) affects the Java Plug-in (version 6 update 18 and 19) on Windows, Solaris and Linux. Both vulnerabilities may allow an attacker to run commands on the user's system with the privileges of the user, whose system may have become compromised by visiting a malicious web site. Oracle rated the severity of both vulnerabilities with a CVSS Base Score of 10.0 because many Windows users grant themselves administrative privileges. However, on other platforms, or for Windows users with limited privileges, the CVSS Base Score is only 7.5, because a successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities cannot result in a full compromise of the affected system. Users can quickly determine if they are running vulnerable versions of Java by pointing their browser to http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml. Java SE users can visit http://www.java.com and download the most recent release of Java SE to address these vulnerabilities. Because of the criticality of these vulnerabilities, and the publicity they received as a result of their disclosure before the availability of a fix, Oracle recommends that all customers and Java users update their Java installation to the most recent version (6 update 20).   Oracle ASMlib on Linux has been a topic of discussion a number of times since it was released way back when in 2004. There is a lot of confusion around it and certainly a lot of misinformation out there for no good reason. Let me try to give a bit of history around Oracle ASMLib. Oracle ASMLib was introduced at the time Oracle released Oracle Database 10g R1. 10gR1 introduced a very cool important new features called Oracle ASM (Automatic Storage Management). A very simplistic description would be that this is a very sophisticated volume manager for Oracle data. Give your devices directly to the ASM instance and we manage the storage for you, clustered, highly available, redundant, performance, etc, etc... We recommend using Oracle ASM for all database deployments, single instance or clustered (RAC). The ASM instance manages the storage and every Oracle server process opens and operates on the storage devices like it would open and operate on regular datafiles or raw devices. So by default since 10gR1 up to today, we do not interact differently with ASM managed block devices than we did before with a datafile being mapped to a raw device. All of this is without ASMLib, so ignore that one for now. Standard Oracle on any platform that we support (Linux, Windows, Solaris, AIX, ...) does it the exact same way. You start an ASM instance, it handles storage management, all the database instances use and open that storage and read/write from/to it. There are no extra pieces of software needed, including on Linux. ASM is fully functional and selfcontained without any other components. In order for the admin to provide a raw device to ASM or to the database, it has to have persistent device naming. If you booted up a server where a raw disk was named /dev/sdf and you give it to ASM (or even just creating a tablespace without asm on that device with datafile '/dev/sdf') and next time you boot up and that device is now /dev/sdg, you end up with an error. Just like you can't just change datafile names, you can't change device filenames without telling the database, or ASM. persistent device naming on Linux, especially back in those days ways to say it bluntly, a nightmare. In fact there were a number of issues (dating back to 2004) : Linux async IO wasn't pretty persistent device naming including permissions (had to be owned by oracle and the dba group) was very, very difficult to manage system resource usage in terms of open file descriptors So given the above, we tried to find a way to make this easier on the admins, in many ways, similar to why we started working on OCFS a few years earlier - how can we make life easier for the admins on Linux. A feature of Oracle ASM is the ability for third parties to write an extension using what's called ASMLib. It is possible for any third party OS or storage vendor to write a library using a specific Oracle defined interface that gets used by the ASM instance and by the database instance when available. This interface offered 2 components : Define an IO interface - allow any IO to the devices to go through ASMLib Define device discovery - implement an external way of discovering, labeling devices to provide to ASM and the Oracle database instance This is similar to a library that a number of companies have implemented over many years called libODM (Oracle Disk Manager). ODM was specified many years before we introduced ASM and allowed third party vendors to implement their own IO routines so that the database would use this library if installed and make use of the library open/read/write/close,.. routines instead of the standard OS interfaces. PolyServe back in the day used this to optimize their storage solution, Veritas used (and I believe still uses) this for their filesystem. It basically allowed, in particular, filesystem vendors to write libraries that could optimize access to their storage or filesystem.. so ASMLib was not something new, it was basically based on the same model. You have libodm for just database access, you have libasm for asm/database access. Since this library interface existed, we decided to do a reference implementation on Linux. We wrote an ASMLib for Linux that could be used on any Linux platform and other vendors could see how this worked and potentially implement their own solution. As I mentioned earlier, ASMLib and ODMLib are libraries for third party extensions. ASMLib for Linux, since it was a reference implementation implemented both interfaces, the storage discovery part and the IO part. There are 2 components : Oracle ASMLib - the userspace library with config tools (a shared object and some scripts) oracleasm.ko - a kernel module that implements the asm device for /dev/oracleasm/* The userspace library is a binary-only module since it links with and contains Oracle header files but is generic, we only have one asm library for the various Linux platforms. This library is opened by Oracle ASM and by Oracle database processes and this library interacts with the OS through the asm device (/dev/asm). It can install on Oracle Linux, on SuSE SLES, on Red Hat RHEL,.. The library itself doesn't actually care much about the OS version, the kernel module and device cares. The support tools are simple scripts that allow the admin to label devices and scan for disks and devices. This way you can say create an ASM disk label foo on, currently /dev/sdf... So if /dev/sdf disappears and next time is /dev/sdg, we just scan for the label foo and we discover it as /dev/sdg and life goes on without any worry. Also, when the database needs access to the device, we don't have to worry about file permissions or anything it will be taken care of. So it's a convenience thing. The kernel module oracleasm.ko is a Linux kernel module/device driver. It implements a device /dev/oracleasm/* and any and all IO goes through ASMLib - /dev/oracleasm. This kernel module is obviously a very specific Oracle related device driver but it was released under the GPL v2 so anyone could easily build it for their Linux distribution kernels. Advantages for using ASMLib : A good async IO interface for the database, the entire IO interface is based on an optimal ASYNC model for performance A single file descriptor per Oracle process, not one per device or datafile per process reducing # of open filehandles overhead Device scanning and labeling built-in so you do not have to worry about messing with udev or devlabel, permissions or the likes which can be very complex and error prone. Just like with OCFS and OCFS2, each kernel version (major or minor) has to get a new version of the device drivers. We started out building the oracleasm kernel module rpms for many distributions, SLES (in fact in the early days still even for this thing called United Linux) and RHEL. The driver didn't make sense to get pushed into upstream Linux because it's unique and specific to the Oracle database. As it takes a huge effort in terms of build infrastructure and QA and release management to build kernel modules for every architecture, every linux distribution and every major and minor version we worked with the vendors to get them to add this tiny kernel module to their infrastructure. (60k source code file). The folks at SuSE understood this was good for them and their customers and us and added it to SLES. So every build coming from SuSE for SLES contains the oracleasm.ko module. We weren't as successful with other vendors so for quite some time we continued to build it for RHEL and of course as we introduced Oracle Linux end of 2006 also for Oracle Linux. With Oracle Linux it became easy for us because we just added the code to our build system and as we churned out Oracle Linux kernels whether it was for a public release or for customers that needed a one off fix where they also used asmlib, we didn't have to do any extra work it was just all nicely integrated. With the introduction of Oracle Linux's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel and our interest in being able to exploit ASMLib more, we started working on a very exciting project called Data Integrity. Oracle (Martin Petersen in particular) worked for many years with the T10 standards committee and storage vendors and implemented Linux kernel support for DIF/DIX, data protection in the Linux kernel, note to those that wonder, yes it's all in mainline Linux and under the GPL. This basically gave us all the features in the Linux kernel to checksum a data block, send it to the storage adapter, which can then validate that block and checksum in firmware before it sends it over the wire to the storage array, which can then do another checksum and to the actual DISK which does a final validation before writing the block to the physical media. So what was missing was the ability for a userspace application (read: Oracle RDBMS) to write a block which then has a checksum and validation all the way down to the disk. application to disk. Because we have ASMLib we had an entry into the Linux kernel and Martin added support in ASMLib (kernel driver + userspace) for this functionality. Now, this is all based on relatively current Linux kernels, the oracleasm kernel module depends on the main kernel to have support for it so we can make use of it. Thanks to UEK and us having the ability to ship a more modern, current version of the Linux kernel we were able to introduce this feature into ASMLib for Linux from Oracle. This combined with the fact that we build the asm kernel module when we build every single UEK kernel allowed us to continue improving ASMLib and provide it to our customers. So today, we (Oracle) provide Oracle ASMLib for Oracle Linux and in particular on the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel. We did the build/testing/delivery of ASMLib for RHEL until RHEL5 but since RHEL6 decided that it was too much effort for us to also maintain all the build and test environments for RHEL and we did not have the ability to use the latest kernel features to introduce the Data Integrity features and we didn't want to end up with multiple versions of asmlib as maintained by us. SuSE SLES still builds and comes with the oracleasm module and they do all the work and RHAT it certainly welcome to do the same. They don't have to rebuild the userspace library, it's really about the kernel module. And finally to re-iterate a few important things : Oracle ASM does not in any way require ASMLib to function completely. ASMlib is a small set of extensions, in particular to make device management easier but there are no extra features exposed through Oracle ASM with ASMLib enabled or disabled. Often customers confuse ASMLib with ASM. again, ASM exists on every Oracle supported OS and on every supported Linux OS, SLES, RHEL, OL withoutASMLib Oracle ASMLib userspace is available for OTN and the kernel module is shipped along with OL/UEK for every build and by SuSE for SLES for every of their builds ASMLib kernel module was built by us for RHEL4 and RHEL5 but we do not build it for RHEL6, nor for the OL6 RHCK kernel. Only for UEK ASMLib for Linux is/was a reference implementation for any third party vendor to be able to offer, if they want to, their own version for their own OS or storage ASMLib as provided by Oracle for Linux continues to be enhanced and evolve and for the kernel module we use UEK as the base OS kernel hope this helps.

  I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows  application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window.If you have missed while creating new Project Go to the Application tab of project properties and verify that .NET Framework Version 3.5 is select as the Target Framework. Now that you have selected the correct framework, will it work? Nope if the application is configured as x86 one it will not work. Sharepoint is a 64 Bit application and when you create a windows application to talk to Sharepoint it should also be a 64 Bit one. Go to Configuration Manager, Select x64. If x64 is not available select <New…> and in the New Solution Platform dialog box select x64 as the new platform copying settings from x86 and checking the Create new project platforms check box. This is not applicable if you are making a console application to talk to sharepoint with Client Object Model.

• Diablo 3 "freezes" periodically

  I'm running Diablo 3 (start edition, digital download) on the following: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit (stock Unity, Gnome, etc; kernel version 3.2.0-29-generic) Wine version 1.5.11 (base, from Wine's PPA, game started with setarch i386 -3) Intel i7 920 CPU nVidia GTX260 with driver version 295.49 ("post-release updates" entry within the proprietary drivers tool), dual monitors 6GB RAM Every so often (and what appears to be at random), the game video will freeze up. I can still move the mouse, and it reacts to ctrl+alt+f2 to drop into text mode, but I can't get back to the desktop (which means I can check terminal to see what's going on after launching from terminal, especially since even in windowed mode, the secondary screen gets shut off by the game), and I can't continue to play the game. In order to get it running again, I have to restart lightdm, then relaunch the game (or, in a couple of rare cases, I had to restart the computer entirely, because running sudo service lightdmn [stop/start] doesn't appear to react). Turning down the video settings seems to have helped in some cases, but not all of them. Times it's frozen on me: The beginning of The Fallen Start quest part 6 - kill the Wretched Mother, right as you walk out of New Tristram and engage in the monsters on the northern path (repeatedly froze here until I adjusted the graphics down) Within the cinematic/event upon finding Deckard Cain While fighting the skeletons to protect Deckard Cain When about to enter Leoric's passage after Cain sends you back to where you found him That's as far as I've gotten through the game so far. Additionally, this doesn't happen on other games I play and seems to only occur with Diablo 3. Has anyone else run into this issue and know a possible cause or fix, or at least know where I can look (and what to look for) to figure out why this is happening?

  THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE OF SIMILAR QUESTIONS (like this) I just had to write that first, there are tons of questions similar to this, all of them have the same redirect to an answer that does not solve my problem, because I don't have the same problem, just the same symptom. I write tests for my companies application. One of these tests tries to upgrade the application from a previous version to a new version to make sure nothing breaks. When I am installing an old version of the application, some weird stuff starts to happen. Sometimes everything goes Okay, and nothing is wrong, other times when trying to install I get this message (company app name censored): E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/XXX-amd64_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened. Using the solutions provided in the questions similar to this one (like this). Do not help, and the problem keeps repeating itself once it happens the first time. This has led me to believe something is wrong on the apt server where the package is being created, but searching these errors yields no information on anything beyond the "fix" suggested in the question I linked, the only other source of information I could find also did not help (here): So I am asking for information; What is the actual problem? What causes the problem? What can fix the problem? I hope this question is in good format, if there is a problem, or missing information I can move to chat.

• Compiz slow under proprietary nvidia driver

  Hi! I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and have problem with proprietary nvidia driver for my GeForce GTS 250. I have issue with poor Compiz performance. And there is also open-source "noueau" driver. Proprietary: I tried many versions but neither works fast on desktop. This means 30 FPS without heavy effects. Currently I am using version 270.18. Even normal desktop use feels bad (moving windows) In games (and 3D benchmark) it is really good! (Unigine Heaven works good!) Open-source "nouveau": Very fast on desktop with heavy effects (blur, ...). I have 300 FPS and more, even in Expo mode. Games were good but not as good as prop. And driver causes xorg to crash even the latest (ppa:xorg-edgers/nouveau), so I switched back to proprietary. I also have computer with Ubuntu 10.04, GeForce 8600GT and drivers around 185.x and Compiz works great there. There is similar question Nvidia proprietary driver performance in 10.10 Which version of nvidia (prop) driver is fast in Compiz in Ubuntu 10.10? How do you install a specific version of nvidia driver? Is it the case that each newer driver works slower on compiz?

• Flickering when accessing texture by offset

  I have this simple compute shader that basically just takes the input from one image and writes it to another. Both images are 128/128/128 in size and glDispatchCompute is called with (128/8,128/8,128/8). The source images are cleared to 0 before this compute shader is executed, so no undefined values should be floating around in there. (I have the appropriate memory barrier on the C++ side set before the 3D texture is accessed). This version works fine: #version 430 layout (location = 0, rgba16f) uniform image3D ping; layout (location = 1, rgba16f) uniform image3D pong; layout (local_size_x = 8, local_size_y = 8, local_size_z = 8) in; void main() { ivec3 sampleCoord = gl_GlobalInvocationID.xyz; imageStore(pong, imageLoad(ping,sampleCoord)); } Reading values from pong shows that it's just a copy, as intended. When reading from the pong texture, visible flickering occurs in some spots on the texture. What am I doing wrong here?

  Moooooooo     For a while now we’ve been using Apple’s enterprise device app distribution mechanism.   This allows you to have a user, click on a URL on their iOS device and it pulls down a new version of an enterprise app. of of our servers. Its really nice,  have a look at - http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/#featuredarticles/FA_Wireless_Enterprise_App_Distribution/Introduction/Introduction.html   I’ve embedded this, into a check on application launch, that a web-service is called to detect a newer version of the software is available.  It then calls the URL to the App and a new version is deployed. You can alert users that a new App update is available by sending them a push notification.  See screenshot at the top. We send our push notifications out to users,  using a simple C# service.    The fun part is this.   You can instruct the push notification to play a sound (embedded in the app already). So our push notification’s play a random farmyard noise, i.e from a selection of - cow.wav dogbrk.wav duck.wav goose.wav horse.wav lamb.wav monkey.wav – left field I know rooster.wav Imagine my amusement being able to periodically send out an update and watch our office (of about 60 people) turn into farm for a few seconds. I’ve messed up a few times, with people being interrupted on customer conference calls,  but people seem good humoured about it. (so far) Simple(ish) pleasures…

• Firmware/driver for Broadcom wifi card, PowerBook G4 running Ubuntu 12.04 [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: How to Install Broadcom Wireless Drivers 40 answers This is my first time working with Ubuntu (or Linux), so please be patient. I am running Ubuntu 12.04-powerpc "Precise Pangolin" on a Mac PowerBook G4 with 1.67GHz processor. The firmware/driver for the wifi card is missing. For reasons not worth explaining, I cannot physically plug the computer into the network. I have another computer, a MacBook Pro running OSX, from which I can download files and port them by USB thumb drive. The wifi card in the PowerBook G4 is by Broadcom. The chip is BCM4306, rev. 3. The PCI number is 14e4:4302. I have downloaded b43-fwcutter_015-14_powerpc.deb and dropped it into the Home folder on the Ubuntu machine. However, it will not install. When I double-click, it opens with Ubuntu SoftwareCenter, but the "Install" button is inactive: I can't click it. There's a message beside the inactive button saying, "An older version of 'b43-fwcutter' is available in your normal software channels. Only install this file if you trust the origin." If I "right-click" the .deb file and open with Archive Manager, it shows me the "DEBIAN" and "usr" folders, but I'm unsure what to do from there...and fairly certain this is not the right way to do things. Maybe I have the wrong version of b43-fwcutter for my machine/version of Ubuntu? The documentation for this problem is a mess. It refers to all sorts of out-of-date Ubuntu versions and to an array of different "cutter" and firmware files. Maybe I'd be able to figure this out if I were a more seasoned Ubuntu user, but I have no idea why Sofware Center won't let me do the install. I would be VERY grateful for an explanation of how to get the wifi card working on this machine again. Thank you!

• How to keep your third party libraries up to date?

  Let's say that I have a project that depends on 10 libraries, and within my project's trunk I'm free to use any versions of those libraries. So I start with the most recent versions. Then, each of those libraries gets an update once a month (on average). Now, keeping my trunk completely up to date would require updating a library reference every three days. This is obviously too much. Even though usually version 1.2.3 is a drop-in replacement for version 1.2.2, you never know without testing. Unit tests aren't enough; if it's a DB / file engine, you have to ensure that it works properly with files that were created with older versions, and maybe vice versa. If it has something to do with GUI, you have to visually inspect everything. And so on. How do you handle this? Some possible approaches: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Stay with your current version of the library as long as you don't notice anything wrong with it when used in your application, no matter how often the library vendor publishes updates. Small incremental changes are just waste. Update frequently in order to keep change small. Since you'll have to update some day in any case, it's better to update often so that you notice any problems early when they're easy to fix, instead of jumping over several versions and letting potential problems to accumulate. Something in between. Is there a sweet spot?

  Sorry to be asking this, but I have read quite a few posts and articles a lot of places wrt the issue I am having, to no avail. I am trying to get a Second Life Viewer (Firestorm) to run, and just keep getting the '64-bit error message' it throws. I have installed every 32-lib I can find, still doesn't work. I think I am surely missing some setting somewhere, or running Firestorm from the wrong place, or something, but I have no idea what. FWIW, Firestorm loads but doesn't behave right in the 32-bit version, either. I have actually tried several linux distros, 32 and 64-bit. Mint 32-bit runs it straight off, and Mint 64-bit throws the '64-bit error'. openSUSE, any version, won't run it at all. Oh, and all the other SL viewers I have tried behave the same way. I am beginning to wonder if my set-up just doesn't like linux. • Understanding how memory contents map into a struct

  I am not able to understand how bytes in memory are being mapped into a struct. My machine is a little-endian x86_64. The code was compiled with gcc 4.7.0 from the Win64 mingw32-64 distribution for Win64. These are contents of the relevant memory fragment: ...450002cf9fe5000040115a9fc0a8fe... And this is the struct definition: typedef struct ip4 { unsigned int ihl :4; unsigned int version :4; uint8_t tos; uint16_t tot_len; uint16_t id; uint16_t frag_off; // flags=3 bits, offset=13 bits uint8_t ttl; uint8_t protocol; uint16_t check; uint32_t saddr; uint32_t daddr; /*The options start here. */ } ip4_t; When a pointer to such an structure (let it be *ip4) is initialized to the starting address of the above pasted memory region, this is what the debugger shows for the struct's fields: ip4: address=0x8da36ce ip4->ihl: address=0x8da36ce, value=0x5 ip4->version: address=0x8da36ce, value=0x4 ip4->tos: address=0x8da36d2, value=0x9f ip4->tot_len: address=0x8da36d4, value=0x0 ... I see how ihl and version are mapped: 4 bytes for a long integer, little-endian. But I don't understand how tos and tot_len are mapped; which bytes in memory correspond to each one of them. • Why are my videos playing speeded up with no audio, but work fine if I log in as a guest?

  Since the start of this week I have been experiencing a glitch in the multimedia on my Samsung R518 laptop. I have 2 problems: Videos in every player are speeded up around 2 or 4 times (including youtube.com (both HTML5 and flash variants), any other video on the web and videos on my laptop played by Totem Media Player), exception is VLC player, but 2nd problem does concern even that. There is no sound - simple as that (with or without headphones plugged in). These all problems are now, and has not seen before, I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 after it was possible, and from start I didn't have anything from this - it just started in this week. I haven't even putted new software in. I have more or less solved the question (kind of) - I just logged in as a guest - and it all works, but when I make a new user - it does not. Please help me.
