• Ridiculously Simple Erlang Question

  Read (skimmed enough to get coding) through Erlang Programming and Programming Erlang. One question, which is as simple as it sounds: If you have a process Pid1 on machine m1 and a billion million messages are sent to Pid1, are messages handled in parallel by that process (I get the impression no) and is there any guarantee of order when processing messages? ie. Received in order sent? Coming from the whole C/Thread pools/Shared State background ... I want to get this concrete. I understand distributing an application, but want to ensure the 'raw bones' are what I expect before building processes and distributing workload. Also, am I right in thinking the whole world is currently flicking through Erlang texts ;)

  Hey Everyone, I have some experience in AJAX development, mostly on .NET and MooTools. However, I want to learn more and see what others out there thought about the various other options available. I am looking more for advise about the front end. The back end, I will most probably be coding up in .NET using c# and WCF services. Please feel free to provide me as much information as you can. Also I would appreciate any links to resources. List of Options (feel free to add) Write my own Javascript Use a frame work like MooTools, JQuery etc. Which one is better? Use Google Web Toolkit. • Wrong image dimensions when it's dynamically loaded on a page the 1st time

  I have the following piece of Javascript code on my web-page var central_image = document.createElement("img") central_image.setAttribute("src", imgs[curr_image_no - 1]); central_image.setAttribute("name", "jpeg"); document.getElementById("photo").appendChild(central_image); central_image.onload = getDimensions(); //function that alerts image dimensions Now, when the central_image is loaded for the 1st time in Firefox, its height always equals to 0. In IE its dimensions are 28 x 30 pixels. When I reload image, its dimensions are OK in both browsers. I guess the problem is that function getDimensions() starts before image was loaded completely. How to change that?

  Hi all, I am able to work with NSTokenField, it is easy to use.. but I want your suggestions on how can I customize it just like it is in "To/ CC" fields in mac mail ie. when no. of tokens in a token field increases height of "To" field gets increased to a certain limit then a vertical scroller starts appearing! By default when we use a token field neither its height gets increased nor a vertical scroller appears! I tried different combinations in IB but I could not obtain mac mail like functionality. • Accessing GMail "View as HTML" content programatically?

  I love the "View as HTML" option in GMail when viewing attachments. I would love to be able to use this feature programatically, i.e. check a GMail inbox, read emails, if there are attachments, get the html view and use that content. I'm looking to do this in C Sharp (on a Mac, can't find the hash symbol). Does anyone know if this is possible or if there's another solution to easily get content from a GMail account, regardless of what format it's in? I.E html, pdf, Word doc, etc. The GMail Inbox Feed api isn't good enough and before I start trying to build an IMAP solution that pulls in PDF/Word doc converters, I thought it'd be good to ask here.

• Does urllib2.urlopen() actually fetch the page?

  hi all, I was condering when I use urllib2.urlopen() does it just to header reads or does it actually bring back the entire webpage? IE does the HTML page actually get fetch on the urlopen call or the read() call? handle = urllib2.urlopen(url) html = handle.read() The reason I ask is for this workflow... I have a list of urls (some of them with short url services) I only want to read the webpage if I haven't seen that url before I need to call urlopen() and use geturl() to get the final page that link goes to (after the 302 redirects) so I know if I've crawled it yet or not. I don't want to incur the overhead of having to grab the html if I've already parsed that page. thanks!

• Onclick starts gif animation and .mp3, how to sync across browsers

  So I am using a text-based jplayer (http://jplayer.org/latest/demo-04/) that I want to sync with a gif animation. Onclick the text link does two things -1. feed the jplayer an mp3 and 2. trigger an animation (via SwapImage). It is important for these two to start at the same time. Right now, this works perfectly in chrome/firefox but in IE and mobile browsers the audio lags considerably. I have tried with the audio preloaded (it is a small 40K mp3) and it makes no difference. I dont think its a bandwidth problem because the problem is the same on repeat clicks. Any pointers on how I can resolve this...

• Browser Not Reading Entire XML File

  I have an XML file that is written by a PHP script. The data for the XML file is gathered from several different RSS feeds. The PHP script is invoked every 5 minutes by a Cron Job. The PHP Script takes maybe 5-10 seconds to write the XML File. Here's the problem: After the XML file is written, I can open it through DreamWeaver and read everything just fine - but when I enter the XML File's URL into my Web Browser (IE or Firefox), I get a "XML Parsing Error: not well-formed" Error in the Browser. When I do View Source in the Browser, the XML file appears incomplete - but when I open the file directly off the server, it is complete. Anyone know what's going on here?

• How to run only the latest/a given test using Rspec?

  Let's say I have a big spec file with 20 tests because I'm testing a large model and I had no other way of doing it : describe Blah it "should do X" do ... end it "should do Y" do ... end ... it "should do Z" do ... end end Running a single file is faster than running the whole test suite, but it's still pretty long. Is there a way to run the last one (ie the one at the end of the file, here "should do Z")? If this is not possible, is there a way to specify which test I want to run in my file ?

• URL Rewriting for user accounts

  We currently have domain.com/username redirected to domain.com/setsession.asp?u=username which then redirects to the app at domain.com/theapp. This means users always see domain.com/theapp, so browsing to a page shows domain.com/theapp/somepage.asp Looking to move this to subdomains ie username.domain.com (we'll get the host name and work out the user from that). How can this be set up? Should we move the app itself to say theapp.domain.com and then rewrite username.domain.com to theapp.domain.com and everything works? If thats right, how can we do the URL rewrite (mod_rewrite via ISAPI Rewrite for IIS or URL Rewriting for IIS) so that we can still access webmail.domain.com, etc?

• RSA implementations for Java, alternative to BC

  The RSA implementation that ships with Bouncy Castle only allows the encrypting of a single block of data. The RSA algorithm is not suited to streaming data and should not be used that way. In a situation like this you should encrypt the data using a randomly generated key and a symmetric cipher, after that you should encrypt the randomly generated key using RSA, and then send the encrypted data and the encrypted random key to the other end where they can reverse the process (ie. decrypt the random key using their RSA private key and then decrypt the data). I can't use the workarond of using symmetric key. So, are there other implementations of RSA than Bouncy Castle?

• Is there a cross-browser way for tooltips?

  I am working with d3.js for rendering my graphs. For some reason, I am not a huge fan of svg title because of the delay it incurs and the inability to style them. Please do correct me if I am wrong. I recently came across, tipsy but it does not seem to be cross-browser compatible. For instance, consider this. The tooltips work just fine in Firefox and Chrome but do not appear even in IE 9 and I'm not sure what's going on. Is there a cleaner cross-browser approach for tooltips compatible with d3.js other than using the svg title attribute?

• What tools do you use when generating markup from mockups?

  So I endeavor to spend most of time on the app server side of things but time to time I need to get my hands dirty and generate markup/css/js from a wireframe or mockup. As far as tools go, Ive found browsershots and Litmus app helpful and of course, vm's as well for checking things out live in ie-{6,7,8}. Otherwise I do the heavy lifting in vim. For generating new markup thats not tied to a target design I think some of the css frameworks & tools like sass look useful but Im skeptical of their utility when needing to generate markup to match a photoshop design. So what tips / tools do you keep in your markup generating utility belt when building solid markup from designs? My list so far: Browsershots Browserlab.adobe.com Haml / Less / Sass (not used but will probably explore)

• Google Visualization API Geomap: How to handle marker click events?

I initially have the Google Visualization API Geomap on a world view (options['dataMode'] = 'regions') and I capture the 'regionClick' event when a country is clicked like so: google.visualization.events.addListener( geomap, 'regionClick', function (e) { var rowindex = data.getFilteredRows([{column: 0, value: e['region']}]); var location = data.getValue(rowindex[0], 3); location.href = "?ISO=" + e['region'] + "&Location=" + location; }); I then draw the map zoomed into the country in markers mode (options['dataMode'] = 'markers'). However, I can't seem to capture any events when the markers themselves are clicked. The documentation ( http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/geomap.html#Events ) only refers to 'select' and 'regionClick' events neither of which are fired in this case. (Tested using Chrome 9, and IE 8.) Has anybody had any success in doing this? Many thanks.

I can do: (select #(and (>= % x) (< % y)) xs) But this is inefficient - O(n) when it could be O(k log n) where k is the number of integers returned. I am just learning clojure so here is how I would do it in C++: set<int>::iterator first = xs.lower_bound(x); set<int>::iterator last = xs.upper_bound(y); for (; first != last; ++first) // do something with *first Can I do this in clojure?

• How to remove proxy from WebRequest and leave DefaultWebProxy untouched

  I use FtpWebRequest to do some FTP stuff and I need to connect directly (no proxy). However WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy contains IE proxy settings (I reckon). WebRequest request = WebRequest.Create("ftp://someftpserver/"); // request.Proxy is null here so setting it to null does not have any effect WebResponse response = request.GetResponse(); // connects using WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy My code is a piece in a huge application and I don't want to change WebRequest.DefaultWebProxy because it is global static property and it can have adverse impact on the other parts of the application. Any idea how to do it?

• Is the F# language reference documentation available in an offline format (PDF, CHM)?

  I've found several posts on hubFS of people asking if there is, or will be, offline documentation for F#. These posts haven't been answered. So I want to give it a shot and ask the same question here on SO. Where I've looked for offline documentation so far: The April 2010 CTP release of Visual F# (version 2.0) is available for VS 2008, but it doesn't come without an offline help. There's a question on SO about offline documentation for various programming languages, but F# isn't mentioned there at the time of this writing. There is of course Microsoft's F# language reference documentation (available on MSDN), which could be downloaded for offline browsing using e.g. wget. Question: Does anyone know whether any "official" offline documentation is on the way, anytime soon? (And related to this, albeit this probably can't be answered objectively: Would it be reasonable to expect that F# likely won't undergo ECMA or ISO standardization, ie. there likely won't be a standards document describing the language?)

• Google Maps custom marker - can the iframe accept one like the static maps?

  I was reading the static maps API, and it says you can include a custom marker in the GET params. You simply link to an image file. I now have a second Google Map within an iframe, and was wondering if you can attach custom markers via the GET params to it? Here is the src attribute of the iframe currently. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=111+Fake+Street+Noosaville+Queensland+Australia&ie=UTF8&output=embed I can't seem to find the documentation on how to do this, if possible. This has been tested and works in IE, Safari, and Chrome, but not Firefox. Trying to figure out what's wrong in Firefox.   I'm looking for some tools for testing vim scripts. Either vim scripts that do unit/functional testing, or classes for some other library (eg Python's unittest module) that make it convenient to run vim with parameters that cause it to do some tests on its environment, and determine from the output whether or not a given test passed. I'm aware of a couple of vim scripts that do unit testing, but they're sort of vaguely documented and may or may not actually be useful: vim-unit: purports "To provide vim scripts with a simple unit testing framework and tools" first and only version (v0.1) was released in 2004 documentation doesn't mention whether or not it works reliably, other than to state that it is "fare [sic] from finished". unit-test.vim: This one also seems pretty experimental, and may not be particularly reliable. May have been abandoned or back-shelved: last commit was in 2009-11 ( 6 months ago) No tagged revisions have been created (ie no releases) So information from people who are using one of those two existent modules, and/or links to other, more clearly usable, options, are very welcome.

• Firefox, prevent rendering between javascript statements.

  I'm trying to create some kind of zoom around the mouse cursor feature on my website which ultimately runs these two lines (+ the same for height/scrollTop). canvas.style.width = someValue; canvas.parentNode.scrollLeft = someOtherValue; The problem is that in firefox(3.6) the page is re-rendered directly after the first row has been executed and since the view is depending on both values this means that every time i recalculate the view firefox will will render an invalid view before the correct one, in other words creating flicker. I've tried swapping the two rows but get the same problem. In chrome, opera and IE this doesn't happen. Both lines are executed before any rendering is done. Is there any way to lock the rendering manually, maybe something like this? document.disableRendering(); //fantasy function canvas.style.width = someValue; canvas.parentNode.scrollLeft = someOtherValue; document.enableRendering(); //fantasy function
