• Problems Installing Windows Server 2008 R2

  I've just finished 3 day download (with breaks) of Server 2008 R2, and am very eager to install it on my dev machine (my laptop, an HP Pavilion with a 2xTurion 64 cpu). If I mount the ISO and try and run Setup.exe, I get told Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application. I tried burning the ISO to DVD (as files), but my machine wont't boot from DVD. If I re-insert the DVD, so that autorun comes into play, I get told something like "the setup is not valid for this version of Windows" Any suggestions as to what I might try, either to diagnose the problem, or to avoid it?

• Getting Correct Edition of Office 2007 from Serial Key

  I have been asked by a Client to refresh one of their Machines. To do this i managed to get Windows XP Setup to run in Repair mode, and while in setup i ran a serial key grabber, which grabbed the key for Office 2007 The only thing is that the key grabber didnt tell me what edition of Office 2007 was installed. I have aqquired a number of ISO's for the different editions (Home & Student, Standard, Professional, Ultimate) but the key doesnt work in any of them. Is there a way to get the edition from the Serial Key, or is there a generic ISO that will install any edition depending on the Serial Key?

• SQL Server 2008 Registration with Product Key

  A colleague of mine gave me the SQL Server 2008 Standard ISO image and I used that while building a Virtual Machine. Now, when I installed SQL Server with that above mentioned ISO, I did not give it a key and I chose Enterprise Evaluation. So, the instance has now been activated with 180-day expiration. I do have a valid MSDN Subscriber login but when I login and search for SQL Server 2008 it comes up with the download but says No Product Key is required. How do I now enter the product key?

• Intsalling Linux on PowerEdge R410 via USB

  I’m hoping someone can help me with the following issue. I have a Dell PowerEdge R410 and basically the Optical Drive has failed when I have been given the server. I have installed 2 SATA drives and want to install Ubuntu 11.04; however, each time I have tried i.e. using bootable .iso on USB it failed. I assume it's failing as with a lot of releases they all look at the CD drive. Ubunutu has failed on installation with the error message unable to mount CD. I have tried installing Microsoft Hyper-v and that also fails as during installation it asks for CD/DVD drivers. Tried embedding ISO's from various distro's (Linux and Windows) with drivers and that hasn't worked out either. Does anyone have any idea on how I can get Ubuntu on this server? Should I look towards an old distro perhaps?

  I've just fitted two disks to my home server. I'm trying to format and then raid them but I'm getting a problem that hours of Googling hasn't resolved this. • CentOS Live CD Creation issues

  I am creating my customized CentOS 6.3 Live CD. I am following information given at https://projects.centos.org/trac/livecd/wiki/GetToolset My "livecd-creator" command completes successfully and an ISO image is created. But when I try to boot up my system with this ISO, it goes up to the CentOS blue screen and then the CAPS lock and Scroll Lock LEDs on the keyboard starts flashing. Then from here after, the system takes no input from keyboard and I have to power cycle it and it does the same thing. Could you get me any suggestion why this is causing and possible workaround. Thanks.

• Unable to see some Russian id3 tags in ncmpc

  I'm running urxvt with the current env: $ env | grep LC LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 The problem is either with ncurses or ncmpc and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what the problem might be. This could also be an issue with the ID3 tags and any advice on working with broken or misconfigured encoding settings in meta tags in mp3 files is also welcome. I have been ignoring this matter for years and it has finally gotten to me. The bizarre thing is that some filenames or tags work, while others do not. What I have tried the following: setting LC_ALL to these values (whatever is before the space) ru_RU.KOI8-R KOI8-R ru_RU.UTF-8 UTF-8 ru_RU ISO-8859-5 rebuilding the MPD database with id3v1_encoding "ISO-8859-1" or id3v1_encoding "UTF-8" I can demonstrate the problem with two screen shots, as it's the easiest way to do so: Expected output (mpc works well): Broken encoding (ncmpc):

• DRAC for remote OS install w/o Virtual Media

  I have a few DELL servers in a remote DC and our ISP has been very kind about doing OS installs for us. However, as we move to Production and multiple DC's I'd like to be able to do the installs/re-installs internally and DRAC Enterprise w/SDRAM seems ideal. My question is, how do you get your install ISO's on to the SDRAM? Can I just copy it from a local DVD (temp USB hookup) or FTP? What's the advantage to the SDRAM over just buying a USB dongle (to leave plugged into the server) and installing a bootable install ISO? We're a virtual org generally using DSL (2mb) connections to the DC over the Internet and using 'Virtual Media' isn't viable for us.

• remastering knoppix: which version and what method should i use

  I'd like to remaster knoppix (mainly add and configure some software). I downloaded newest version (KNOPPIX-ADRIANE_V6.2CD-2009-11-18-EN.iso) but later i read that it has some other window manager as default, not kde... and i want to have kde on my remaster. Is kde included on that iso but it's not default or it's not included at all? If it's not there what knoppix version should i get for my remaster? My other question... I've seen some remastering scripts (with menus, etc) on knoppix forums, do any of these works with version i have? Or with version i should have if i need kde?

  I have a Windows 7 installation DVD that came with a computer with no optical drive. I have an empty USB thumb drive. I have access to two computers with optical drives, one running Linux and the other running Mac OS X. Notably, I do not have access to any Windows computer at this time. With the tools that I have, how can I create a thumb drive that I can boot with and install Windows 7? Do I have to look out for anything when making the ISO from the DVD (DRM or anything)? After the ISO is made, will UNetbootin work? How about dd?

• Modifying the install environment for RH-like installations

  I am trying to modify the basic installation environment (ie, what Anaconda runs in) for a customized CentOS distribution. For the first try, I would just like to modify a few of the splash images. My initial attempt to do this entailed: 1) Mount images/install.img to a directory ~/img/ 2) Copy all files from img/ to ~/tmpimg/ 3) Modify the splash images 4) mkisofs -o ~/final/install.img 5) cp ~/final/install.img back to my ~/cdroot/ folder and remake the iso. However, the generated .img in step 4 doesn't even come close to matching the file size from the original install.img (meaning that install.img must be created in some other fashion using compression), and it fails when I boot my iso. What settings should I be using to make the install.img file? Is there some other technique for modifying CentOS install environments?

I'm trying to upgrade to 8.1 preview, so I downloaded the 64 bits ISO of Windows 8.1 preview (french):fr_windows_8.1_preview_x64_dvd_2358804.iso My I start the setup from the media, the setup does not propose me to upgrade and keep my applications. Only Keep personal files only and Keep nothing are available. When I read the technet page Supported Upgrade Path, upgrading and keeping everything should be proposed. Why can't I upgrade? Do I missed something?

I read up something on internet about this issue but all the articles are just way too complex and big + they are all different so don't know which one to try.   Hello, i am trying to install VS TS 2008 on W7 Ultimate (64bit), but i have run into errors during the setup. Please take note that i have tried to mount the iso to a virtual drive, and also extracted the iso contents to a local folder. Both methods have failed and produce the same error log below. MSI returned error code 1603 [10/26/09,03:02:42] VS70pgui: [2] DepCheck indicates Runtime Pre-requisites is not installed.   I want to tag different file types (i.e. .pdf, .epub, .iso, .bin, folders,..) using the same descriptive fields. For example i would like a metadata field "type" which would be "eBook" on pdf- and epub-files, "CD-Image" on iso- and bin-files. I read about Alternate Data Streams (ADS) to make this possible. Does anyone know a good program for Windows 7 to tag different files and search for them? It is important for me, that the metadata is NOT stored in a separate database. I move the files a lot and need to stay flexible (ADSs 'stick' to the files). Any ideas?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop.   I'm about to completely re-pave my Mac Mini but the DVD drive has died on me which means I can't boot from the installation media. I know I can boot from a USB stick but I don't have one available, what are my options given the following hardware at hand? Netgear ReadyNAS Duo NAS (NIC or USB only, no Firewire) USB HDD (no Firewire) I've ripped an ISO of the installation disk, can I somehow get the Mini to boot from this image using one of the above? If I decide not to re-pave but just upgrade, can the Mac be upgraded just using an OSX 10.6 ISO image on its disk?

  I've just gone through the Windows 8 upgrade process, and I am at the "Install now/Install by creating media/Install later from your desktop" stage. I've already got a sufficiantly big, empty partition, so can someone explain in fairly simple terms how to install onto the new partition? I would prefer not to burn the ISO onto a disk, it would be a lot easier if I could use a USB drive. (I've done quite a bit of googling, but all that I can find goes into endless detain about the partitioning, and spends very little time on putting the ISO on a booteable drive. How do I do this? Do I need to empty the drive? etc?)

I want to install Windows8 developer installation (iso image), and I have it saved in a new partition I created, which has only this.G:\ I want to boot from this partition G:\ so that I can install Windows 8, but in my boot options I get only Internal Hard Disk, CD ROM, and USB Drive. • How to repair Windows XP Installation HDD from another PC?

  My friend gave me his HDD that has Windows XP Pro installed on it to try and fix it. I don't have the XP CD to repair it, but I do have the ISO. I suppose I could always burn it.. but that's a lot of trouble because I don't have any blank CD's. I plugged it into my PC's hot-swap drive bay, and I have Daemon tools. Is there anyway I can try to repair the XP installation on this HDD from my PC without booting from it and burning my ISO?

• Windows 7 startup MUCH slower after reinstall (on an SSD)

  I installed Windows 7 Prof 64 bits OEM (Spanish) on my new machine. As I wanted my Windows to be in English, the web shop where I bought the DVD recomended me to download an ISO file with the same Windows version (but in English), burn it on a DVD and install it. And that I should be able to use my registration code. Location ISO: http://msft-dnl.digitalrivercontent.net/msvista/pub/X15-65805/X15-65805.iso I've done this and everything works (I have not activated my Windows yet but I expect no problem there). Just one thing: its startup is MUCH slower now! Have a look at my PC specs (bottom). On my first install (Spanish), it was like: - motherboard splash screen -- shows for a second or two - list of found drives -- a few seconds - the text "Windows starting" -- about a second before the dots appear - four collored dots form the Windows logo -- a few seconds after the logo is fully formed it moves on to the login screen. On my second install (English): - motherboard splash screen -- shows for 15 seconds - list of found drives -- a few seconds - the text "Windows starting" -- shows for 40 seconds before the dots appear - four collored dots form the Windows logo -- now it moves on to the login screen about equally fast as before. Ones it's up and running it seems to be as responsive as before, although it's possible that I'm not noticing the difference. I did the first install on the virgin SSD drive straight from the box. The second time I let the Windows installation program format the drive first to get rid of the old installation. I noticed that there were two partitions on my SSD: partition 1, 100 Mb, "reserved for the system" and partition 2, 111.7 Gb. I only formated the big partition, and I left the system partition untouched. Between the two installs, I didn't open the computer so everything is connected to the same port. I did not change anything in BIOS. Has Windows not recognized my SSD as an SSD but as a normal HDD. I suspect that Windows has not done the neccesary automatic configuration settings that it should do for SSD's (but that's just a hunch). How do I get my SSD back into its virgin state, as if it came right from the box, so I can go for a 3rd attempt to install windows. Should I use DISKPART? Other ideas are welcome. Specifications: mobo: Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 CPU: i7-2600K SSD: OCZ Agility3 2,5" HDD: Samsung Spinpoint F4 mem: Kingston HyperX DIMM 8 Gb DDR3-1600
