• Raid system fails to boot after moving from 2.6 kernel to 3.5

  I'm running Gentoo Linux with a custom compiled kernel and I've just migrated from a 2.6 kernel to a 3.5. As my HD's are on RAID 0 mode I use a custom initrd file in order to be able to boot. While kernel 2.6 is able to boot without problems the new 3.5 compiled kernel fails to boot complaining about no block devices found. After taking a look at initrd.cpio contained scripts I can see the failure message is given by mdadm tool. Does anyone has a clue about that? Edit: this morning i noticed there was some kind of issue on my old initrd which works fine for 2.6 kernels, so created a new initrd which works fine and let me to boot into GNU/Gentoo Linux with same 3.5 bzImage. • 'Singleton' application - or let the user only launch one instance of a program at the time

  I'm running a few linux desktops; mainly for kids (yeah, trying to teach them the right OS at early stage) (running Ubuntu 10.10, Gnome) The problem is that they found very funny to make their workstations (actually, old 512 Mb pentium 4) by launching thousands of firefox instances. I'm looking for a way to restrict them to launch 'N' instances of a particular application. Haven't figured yet how. Thought of a monitoring daemon but I think that would be too ressources hungry. Any idea of a script/trick to achieve this ? Note: i might have 1-2 level of users (the kids, and the more grown up kids) so i have also to limit per user; something like user1: 3firefox, user2: 2firefox instances.

  Some time ago I protected the Excel 2010 file from the path File Protect workbook Encrypt with password and gave it a password. Now that I removed that password via below method: Open the workbook and use Save As In the lower right of the file window will be "Tools" Choose "General Options" Clear the password. Save over your old file. the file is openable without wanting a password. But the problem is when I open it and close it immediately, even without moving the active cell, the message "Do you want to save the changes you made to 'test.lsx'?" appears. While there hasn't occurred any changes to that file so why I face this message any time I want to close the file? Hasn't the file been corrupted?

• Can I set a hyperlink's display text from a document property?

  I'm trying to make a word document customizable through a document property that contains the base URL of all the links. I've managed to make the links themselves reference the document property like this: { HYPERLINK { QUOTE "http://{ DOCPROPERTY Host}/some/path" } } Changing the document property and updating the files makes the hyperlinks point to the correct URL. However, visually, nothing changes - the old URL is still shown as the display text of the hyperlink. Is there a way to make this work? Microsoft docs helpfully state You can edit the display text for the field by typing over it. but I can't figure out how that is supposed to work - even if I manually type over the hyperlink, it includes the edits in the field code instead of adjusting the display text. Currently attempting in Word 2002, but 2010 also available.

• Best window manager for Linux for Virtual Desktop / Multimon

  Previous used Ubuntu Gnome with Compiz but for my basic spec intel macbook (4 years old) its a little too heavyweight. So for now Im back on my macbook with os x, but now considering going back to Linux. Im looking for a window manager that has the following properties: 1) Supports virtual desktop (need 4 minimum) 2) Works well with multi monitors - can move an app with shortcut from one monitor to the other (on same virtual desktop) 3) Can remember window position (i.e. open vim on 2 monitor) - however must coerce everything back to first window when 2nd screen is unplugged 4) Keyboard shortcut friendly 5) Not too hard to install 6) Works well with minimum hardware such as integrated graphics Please suggest and share your experiences

• Registry Search & Replace Tool

  Can anyone recommend a good (and ideally free) Registry Search & Replace tool? There seems to be a lot of utilities that searches the registry, but not very many that does the replacing. I've found some really old ones (from the late 90s to 2007). I was hoping for newer ones or ones still maintained. I did run across RegReplacer, but that one doesn't seem to work very well (It only found 2 instances of a string where NirSoft's RegScanner caught 449). I also found Registrar Registry Manager via this question here, but it's $44 :-\

• How to compare differences between directories (linux)

  I have two directories - one from earlier backup and second from newest backup. How do i compare what changes were made to files in directory from newest backup on Linux? Also how do i display changes in for example text and php files - i'm thinking about something like revision history on wikipedia where you see old version on one side of the screen and newest version on other and changes are highlighted. How do i achieve something like that? edit: How do i also compare remote dir with local?

• Windows 7: enabling navigation of subfolders in pinned Start Menu folders

  I'm just about to move from Windows XP to Windows 7, and I'm struggling with some of the interface changes. In XP, I was able to throw a folder intoC:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menuand have it appear on the Start Menu, complete with the ability to navigate through subfolders. I've figured out how to pin a folder onto the Start Menu in Windows 7, which required a registry hack. However, I am unable to view the subfolders of the pinned folder without opening a new Windows Explorer window. Is there any way to replicate the old XP behavior I'm used to? I'd like to be only a single click away from these handful of application links and folders, since I use them all the time throughout the day.

• HP Wireless Printer not working

  I have installed an HP DeskJet 4620 driver on a win 7 machine. All works perfectly for several days, and than printing is not longer possible. Instead I get the message: "Unable to communicate with printer". This happened on every Win 7 PC I tried, and none of the HP/MS sites contain any relevant info... (Posting this so that the answer appears online, as I did solve it after much work) Solution: It appears that HP installation puts a unique "port" called "HP Network re-discovery". It stops working after some time (possibly after the first time the printer/pc enter sleep mode). BUT, the standard MS TCP port works just fine. So: Go to "Printers" Right click Printer Click "Printer properties" and then "Printer" or "Fax" (for both - do all this twice) Click "Add Port..." Select "Standard TCP Port" Fill in details Move printer to use the new port by un-checking the old one and checking the new one Happy printing.

• Access console of QNX server

  I am new to QNX (although I am familiar with Unix/Linux). This company I am working with has an old QNX (4.25) server in a server room that they remotely access via Windows terminals (Kermit via Telnet) which presents them with a text-based program. I need to get into/onto the actual box to be able to view directories, files, etc... and wondering if I can do that "remotely", along the lines of how I would SSH into a Unix box. Is there something like that in QNX? Do I need to actually hook up a keyboard/monitor to this server to be presented with a console? Would I even get a console?

• SSD runs faster on Windows as compared to Linux [closed]

  Windows 7 seems to install, boot and run much smoother & faster than each the three linux distros I have recently tried (Ubuntu 12.04 unity, Linux mint 13 MATE, and Fedora 17 on gnome 3.4). Why am I facing bad performance in Linux? I have tweaked my Linux installs for the SSD (enabling trim, disabling swap, etc.) I'm using an Acer TravelMate with i5-2410m processor, intel hd 3000 graphics, 8 gigs of ram, and a 256 gb samsung 830 ssd. Edit: Boot times are 10-15 seconds slower, there is noticeable delay from login to fully loaded desktop, and in general does not appear to be as responsive as my old windows 7 install or the Linux guests I had running on it.

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz RAM: 2 GB x 2 = 4 GB DDR2 @ 332 MHz Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4350 @ 1 GB Dedicated Audio: M-Audio FastTrack Pro HDD: Samsung HD753LJ 733 GB & Samsung HD160JJ 156 GB As you can see, my system is old.

• I keep getting blue screen - Windows 7 x64 (maybe ram?)

  I have +- 5yrs old pc runnig windows 7 and I've been getting blue screen recently. I had win 8 and I got a lof of erros with ram memory, so I reinstalled back to Win 7. (I have 2x 2 GB RAM) To make a better image of my errors - I get them while writing email, installing nvidia driver, sound driver, running RAM test. I got a log of my last error, could anyone tell me what is it? Should I get new RAM memories? • How to obtain printed page count if no web-gui or driver-gui is available to show it

  I am curious if windows print servers can keep a count of the printed pages sent to it? Can an individual PC (WinXP+)? Is there some secret command you can send it (with telnet, dos, etc)? I searched & couldn't find any questions similar to this here so lets keep this open-ended for future people who are curious. Is this more suited towards server fault? Maybe, but this is more about printers & local PC's have print servers now-a-days.   One of my clients is a small school district in Texas. Like any school, they often have problems with network'd peripherals such as printers, et al. It would be nice to be able to simply "listen" to what the printer and PC are saying to each other (or not saying more importantly)... The problem is that I can't find old-style "hubs" anymore, and even if I could, it's not a long-term solution. All of the devices that I have found to replicate the purpose of a simple hub are either $100+ or are difficult to throw into a networking tool kit (aka my backpack)... Now that hubs are dead, what's the new low-cost standard for simple packet capture in the networking world?

  Hi All, I'm trying to learn to be a Unix/Linux Sysadmin, and am hoping to get some hands-on experience by setting up a few installs (VMs, old comps, and the like) at home and practicing administering them. I was wondering, in the experience of those on this site, which distros are critical to be comfortable with. Obviously, to a certain extent, they're all similar, but there are substantial enough differences between administering, say, Debian, OpenSolaris, FreeBSD, and CentOS. So, which distros are most important to practice with in your opinion? Which have had most demand/come up most often in actual work situations? Thanks!

• Playing/extracting audio file from PDF

  I use Ubuntu and I have a PDF file that contains an audio annotation. It won't play on Okular, it treats it as a text annotation. Following an old blog post where the poster created a small C script to extract the audio didn't work either, I suspect the format of these audio annotations has changed. Using the information on it I managed to uncompress the PDF and with vim, I found the audio data in the file. I tried copying this into its own file and changed the extension from mp3, wav, mid, but none of them would play. Is there a way of achieving this?

• Tests for hard drive health

  I have a 5-year old hard drive (bought new at the time), but it was sitting in my closet for 5 years, unused. I have just started using it, and seems to be getting a whirring sound (rather distinct from the other noises like fans etc.). I ran a few diagnostics tests, like Seagate's SeaTools, and the SMART test, and a few generic tests and all passed. Should I be concerned? Is there any other test that I should run? It's an internal IDE WD 5400RPM drive. Being used for a desktop, which is itself pretty high-end (AMD Phenom II X6 1100T, AMD Radeon GPU etc.), but would be used rather occasionally to begin with (avg. 1-2 hrs. per day).   I am using a version of Ms Office of 2010, it was a beta version of public domain (I dont recall the name, but I believe it was called Blue version or something like that). I usually make my documents using the MS Word and then saving it like a pdf file using the function to publish as a pdf file within Word. The problem that I have is that some people are converting my documents into text, putting their name on it, and credited my work to them; so I would like to know if there is a way to: protect with a password the editing of my document protect it from converting into txt, with a password if its possible maybe but a digital signature in which it says my name as an author I want that the people who access it can only read it, and nothing more. I am using MS Word 2010 and Foxit Pdf (an old version), I usually do not use Adobe Acrobat. Thanks

• Active Directory password update not recognized on OS X 10.7.3?

  We have a few Macs in our office which are bound to our Active Directory (Server 2k8R2) domain for login authentication and access to file shares. For the most part this has worked without trouble. I recently changed my AD password (from the Windows box that is my main desktop machine), and my iMac still wants my old password for logins—even after a reboot. It correctly prompts for the new password when I attempt to connect to Windows smb file shares. The last time I changed my password, the iMac was running Snow Leopard and picked up the password change as expected. I'm a little bit of an OS X n00b, so I apologize if this should be obvious. My searching has turned up numerous issues people have had with Lion and Active Directory, but not this particular problem. Possibly related, we do have mobile accounts enabled for AD in the Directory Utility options. I assume this causes credentials to be cached locally, but it's not clear to me how to get them to update.

• Possible to change the order of the shortcut locations in windows explorer

  When you open a new explorer window by default it loads from the starting position "Computer" which shows your drives, etc. This is all well and good except when explorer loads it bumps the scroll bar down so that half the favorites are cut off. I can scroll up to get to the ones I want but that gets really old doing that 50 times a day. I do clean out my favorites frequently but more are added all the time and used. In trying to come up with a fix for this problem I thought maybe it would be possible to move the link to "Computer" to be at the very top and the "Favorites" area directly under that but I can't figure out a way to do that. Anyone have an idea? Or maybe another solution I haven't thought of?

• PS/2 mouse works with Windows 7 32-bit but not recognised by 64-bit, What to do?

  Our USB mouse was stolen and a PS/2 OK_520 Mouse that works OK on my Medion PC, running Windows 7 32-bit, if plugged in before booting, is not recognised by Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell INSPIRONone_19T with a 19" Touch Screen. (It is a communal computer available to all residents.) A USB mouse works OK and the Update Driver option reports: 'driver is up to date'. Without the USB Mouse, Device Manager/Mice shows only the Touch Screen as a Mouse. The Add New Hardware option searches but shows nothing and the Troubleshooter says ' device possibly not recognised, alterations made to system, try again.' but it is still not recognised after repeated re-boots. The BIOS does not seem to have any option to enable a PS/2 Mouse. The Mouse is very old so maybe it is not 64-bit compatible, or there is no 64-bit driver for one, but how to get one if the device is not recognised?

I connected my iPad to some new PC, Synced, then ticking Sync Apps from Devices-Apps will give me warning that all existing apps on my iPad will be replaced with those from Library-Apps. But in Library I have just couple old apps, which long time ago I used. So how I can sync the library in iTunes with my existing apps from iPad? EDIT: I have tried to click on Transfer Purchases, but not all of the items went to the library, just few of them.

When do I use 'mx: rather than 'a:' or 'include:'? What's the point of '?all' (Neutral result) except for debugging? Why do so many people use '~all' (Softfail) instead of '-all' ? I've been to the Wizard (http://old.openspf.org/wizard.html) but I don't understand the questions.

• Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

  I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ?
