• T9 patented while QWERTY is not?

  I've seen that there are lots of custom keyboards for Android, but all are QWERTY keyboards. I couldn't find any keyboard with T9 layout. Is this because T9 is patented and the QWERTY layout is not? So if I made a T9 keyboard, I would have to pay patent fees? So what does the patent protect when you look at T9? Only the layout? Or the prediction engine? The problem is, this way of predicting words is the only one that makes sense for this layout ...

• Load previous (last) scene used in unity3d

  Im making a 2D game for android and I made over 200 levels/scenes.I also made a game over scene that opens when the players collides with an obscale.In the GameOver scene I added a retry button which I wanna make it so it opens the last level played.Im new in Unity and scripting.I've read other similar questions but none of them fixed my issue.Anyone has any idea that could help ? Im doing this because I don't wanna create over 200 game over scenes and edit each obscale in game. Thank you. Edit : Im using javascript.

• Units in tile world

  I've started to make a 2D sidescroller, the camera and world rendering works as I expect, but now comes the physics part of world. What I need is that one tile in x direction (or y direction) should correspond to 1 meter. Since I have a variable time step (android mobile game), I can't figure it out, since the timing and velocity always will be dependent of the device. So, is there any good way to make one tile to correspond 1 meter? This would be good, otherwise the physics implementation would later be weird.

My intention is to release it on both the iOS platform and the Android platform. My best language is Java, so I would like to use a game engine where I can code with that. • Move Camera Freely Around Object While Looking at It

  I've got a 3D model loaded (a planet) and I have a camera that I want to allow the user to move freely around it. I have no problem getting the camera to orbit the planet around either the x or y axis. My problem is when I try to move the camera on a different axis I have no idea how to go about doing it. I am using OpenGL on Android with the libGDX library. I want the camera to orbit the planet in the direction that the user swipes their finger on the screen.

• Boot Ubuntu on smartphone SD card?

  Now here's what I want: Ubuntu on the SD card that lives in my phone. I like using Ubuntu portably and my phone as a flash drive, but I haven't been able to make these work together yet. I've tried booting off my Huawei U8800 (Android 2.2) and Nokia E66 with a micro-SD card (with 11.10, boots OK in a card-reader) on an eeepc 901 without luck. The Huawei doesn't show up in the BIOS boot menu. BIOS sees the Nokia but halts at "Boot error". I guess this is related to the phone's flash drive emulation and how it handles bootsectors, but I don't know enough about how that works to go any further. Has anyone succeeded in this?

• Changes to myApp.js files are reverted back to normal when the project is build - Cocos2dx

  I am trying to do some changes to my myApp.js file of coco2dx project for android in eclipse but I am not able to do it. I am actually trying to change the default background image of my app. But when I run my project all the changes goes back to before values For Eg: This is the default line wer we are setting our background image this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/HelloWorld.png"); I am changing it to the following line: this.sprite = cc.Sprite.create("res/CloseNormal.png"); But when I run my project CloseNormal.png goes back to HelloWorld.png I am using: OS: Win7 Cocos2d Ver: cocos2dx 2.2.2 Why is this happening. Can anybody help me?

• Converting to a mac-book pro for multi disciplined development.

  Hi all, I am in a bit of a bind. I have been contracted to create a small suite of applications for Android, iOS and WP7. Currently I am also on the market for a new notebook for development. Now the issue I have is I can either buy a consumer grade macbook and a laptop or I could just buy an 8gb Ram, SSD, i7 mackbook and virtualise windows 7. I have never used a mac or macbook before so before I go purchase anything I would like to know what your thoughts are on this. Has anyone any experience with this?

• Is an in-app purchase required to unlock game in order to bypass pirating acceptable?

  I'm considering writing a mobile game and looking at distribution. The game will have a server requirement, which means I will have to pay for bandwidth, hosting, processor time, etc. Because of that I'll need to make at least a little money off this thing. According to the press piracy is rampant in the android community. To get around this, I'm thinking of implementing a simple model where the game is free, perhaps allowing play for X number of turns or something, and then requiring an in-app purchase to continue to play. I would clearly explain this in the app description, and the in-app purchase would be managed per account so it would be linked to your google play account so you wouldn't have to re-purchase every time you get a new device. Would gamers accept this model or see it as unreasonable?

  My dissertation is about developing a tool for testing mobile applications from the GUI. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. I am not so sure, but what I want to develop might be a mini MonkeyTalk, with minimal functionality, focused on the GUI of the application(s) to be tested. My questions: What framework(s)?   The number of platforms I have to develops apps for is increasing and It brings me lots of stress to learn new technologies for each target platform. I found out that Telerik's Kendo UI is very good to build websites that look and feel native on mobile platforms (e.g. iOS and Android). My question is, is it possible to build HTML5 apps to deploy them on iTunes App Store and Google Play? Please note that I am eager to know the possibility of creating apps (complete apps bundled in standard format of Apple and Google for distribution in their respective mobile app markets) but not websites.

  We are using Geolocation (getCurrentPosition()) in a website to determine a users position when using our site from a mobile device. I want to write an article explaining how the user can obtain the best results. Am I correct in assuming: Enabling GPS will yield the best result when in rural areas (less buildings to obscure line of sight to the satelites) Enabling Wi-Fi will yield the best results when in urban areas (generally more Wi-Fi hotspots available) Is it true that Android phones have better results from silently harvesting Wi-Fi hotspot details? • Book suggestions for GUI related topics [closed]

  In the past, I've developed more on the server side, so no big GUI/graphic programming topics have crossed my way so far. I'm switching a little bit to the mobile plattforms (iOS, android) and would like to gather more info on the visual/graphic side. Using the SDK controls/widgets isn't that challenging and I would love to get deeper into the view/presentation layer. Animations, drawing itself, probably OpenGL. Any books that would take me a little deeper in understanding how drawing actually works would be helpful.

• How do I sync music to my Sony Walkman (Z Series) using Rhythmbox?

  I have recently purchased the new Walkman Z from Sony. I can transfer music by mounting it as a drive, but I would prefer to use Rhythmbox to do so. My other Android devices and MP3 players from the past have always just shown up without any tweaking. Using Nautilus to transfer the files is possible but for some reason Nautilus still makes a trash folder on removable drives. Deleting the trash folder anew is really annoying to do every time I delete music from the device. How can I use Rhythmbox to transfer and remove songs instead?

  I've been trying to find a tutorial on how to best make animations in Android. I already have some animations for my enemies and my character that are controlled by rectangles and changing rectangleframe between updates using a picture like this: When I'm shooting my enemies they lose HP, and when their HP == 0 they get removed. As long as I'm using an arrayList (which I do for all enemies and bullets) I'm fine, since I can just use list.remove(i). But when I'm on a boss-level and the Boss's HP == 0, I want to remove him and play an animation of an explosion of stars before the "End-screen". Is there a preferred way to do temporary animations like this? If you can give me an example or redirect me to a tutorial, I'd be really grateful!

• Google Chrome Browser does not display the images from Local network or local host? [migrated]

  While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

• Easy Method to Change Color on UI Elements

  This isn't a language-specific thing as far as I'm concerned. I was wondering what may be a quick way to change the COLOR of a certain on-screen element such as a button and its associated text. I would assume there is a trick to making a graphics engine so maybe individuals pixels or groups of sprites can have their colors easily shifted. A lot of game interface buttons and such have this so you know when an event like a click has occurred. Any pseudo code would be helpful and I am working in Android (not XML fluff), but again, this probably is not a very specific question, just an inquiry on how to go about this.

• Drivers for GeForce 7300 GS?

  I have been searching EVERYWHERE!!!!! And I cannot seem to find a driver for my GeForce 7300 GS video card. If I don't get it, the Android SDK emulator won't work. I get this error while starting the emulator up: X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 12 Current serial number in output stream: 12 I looked up anything and everything, and the results I got was to get a video card driver, which I can not find.   I'm pretty new in developing videogames. By now I only used SDL with C/C++ to create games. I'm currently learning OpenGL and I realized that to be fluid and easy to maintain the code must be logically separated. Since I want to use OpenGLES on iOS and Android I was wondering how the engine must be imagined in a technical way, some questions came up: Do I have to separate input/update functions from draw functions in different threads? Is there only one proper way to think a game engine/loop? What kind of assets should I use to create a 3D game using openGl ES to get better performance?

• Play music from computer on phone, over WiFi?

  Wasn't sure whether to ask on here on on android.stackexchange.com ... but I want to play music which is on my desktop machine through my phone. The music is coming from ext4 partition which I am happy to share on the LAN. It should use WiFi not bluetooth (because I hope to use the bluetooth interface for other things, simultaneously). Is it possible and what do I need to setup on the desktop (on Ubuntu 12.04) and/or my phone (galaxy nexus)? edit: Just to clarify, I want the music to be playing from the phone, not through the desktop's speakers.

• How to calculate shot angle and velocity to hit a moving target?

  I am developing a 2D Android game and I am making an aiming algorithm for AI projectiles to hit enemies either following a path, or free moving. At the moment it just calculates where the target will be after a distance and fires a projectile to meet it at that distance. Of course this means varying the projectile speed to meet the target. Does anyone have any tips for a simple-ish algorithm (optimal-ish) to calculate when the projectile needs to fire and where it needs to aim if it can only travel at a constant velocity? Say the projectile goes twice the speed of the target? The only way I can think of involves searching and seems quite large.
