• WGet from one site on a server to another site on the same server

  Hey all, I've recently been asked to administer a couple ubuntu boxes running web servers. I'm a dev by trade so if this question is fairly noob please forgive. We have about a dozen sites running on this box. 2 of our sites need to talk back and forth over a restful api. Unfortunately we are having issues with the sited connection to each other via wget. When we try and run wget manually from the command line from the server pointing to a site also on that server it hangs and eventually times out. If we do the same thing from outside the server to the same site on the server it works. Is there something that could be preventing sites on the same server from communicating with each other? The same thing happens pinging the site from the server.

• manyToManyField question

  Hay guys, I'm writing a simple app which logs recipes. I'm working out my models and have stumbled across a problem My Dish models needs to have many Ingredients. This is no problem because i would do something like this ingredients = models.ManyToManyfield(Ingredient) No problems, my dish now can have many ingrendients. However, the problem is that the ingredient needs to come in different quantities. I.E 4 eggs, 7 tablespoons sugar My Ingredient Model is very simple at the moment class Ingredient(models.Model): name = models.TextField(blank=False) slug = models.SlugField(blank=True) How would i go about work out this problem? What fields would i need to add, would i need to use a 'through' attribute on my ManyToManyfield to solve this problem?

• How to track my kid's Multi-Browser website history

  My kid is 14, homeschooled and capable computer user. All of her school work is done online; the computer literacy course even uses 3 different browsers, Chrome, IE, and Firefox. I have 2 laptops, running Win7 (one is Pro, the other Home). Is there a way to get all of her browser history in one place? I have to account for 60 minutes of class time per subject per day, but trying to do this across all 3 is getting too complicated. Thanks! PS. My kid and I talk about internet safety and usage regularly and she knows that I monitor where she goes and how long she is there. Secrecy is not an issue.

• zChaff not showing output

  Hello, So I downloaded the latest version of zChaff (2007), and was trying out some very simple SAT problems. But zChaff does not output the solution (variable assignments). A very simple example input: p cnf 2 2 1 2 0 1 -2 0 And what I get: c 2 Clauses are true, Verify Solution successful. Instance Satisfiable 1 -2 Random Seed Used 0 Max Decision Level 1 Num. of Decisions 2 ( Stack + Vsids + Shrinking Decisions ) 0 + 1 + 0 Original Num Variables 2 Original Num Clauses 2 Original Num Literals 4 Added Conflict Clauses 0 Num of Shrinkings 0 Deleted Conflict Clauses 0 Deleted Clauses 0 Added Conflict Literals 0 Deleted (Total) Literals 0 Number of Implication 2 Total Run Time 5.1e-05 RESULT: SAT I can see the 1 -2 on the left of "Random Seed Used", but shouldn't this be outputing the variable assignments as "v ..." ? • How to study for MCTS 70-433 exam (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) and is it worth it?

  Hi, I'm working as a QA (Software Tester with 3 years of experience) and was thinking of getting some certifications for my career. I already have the ISTQB certification and was thinking of doing SCJP along with MCTS 70-433 certification (SQL Server 2008 Database Development) as the next move. So my question is this: 1) Who should go for the 70-433 certification and is it worth going for, for a career in QA? 2) What would be a good book to study for this? I'm just looking for a simple book that is written just to the point and not much bloated up such as technical bibles. Not that they aren't good but they just take up too much of time. Maybe something similar to the one written by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates for SCJP. It is written in a very simple language and is enough to do SCJP. Edit: I'm still searching for answers to this. • A case-insensitive related implementation problem

  Hi All, I am going through a final refinement posted by the client, which needs me to do a case-insesitive query. I will basically walk through how this simple program works. First of all, in my Java class, I did a fairly simple webpage parsing: title=(String)results.get("title"); doc = docBuilder.parse("http://" + server + ":" + port + "/exist/rest/db/wb/xql/media_lookup.xql?" + "&title=" + title); This Java statement references an XQuery file "media_lookup.xql" which is stored on localhost, and the only parameter we are passing is the string "title". Secondly, let's take at look at that XQuery file: $title := request:get-parameter('title',""), $mediaNodes := doc('/db/wb/portfolio/media_data.xml'), $query := $mediaNodes//media[contains(title,$title)], Then it will evaluate that query. This XQuery will get the "title" parameter that are passes from our Java class, and query the "media_data" xml file stored in the database, which contains a bunch of media nodes with a 'title' element node. As you may expect, this simple query will just match those media nodes whose 'title' element contains a substring of what the value of string 'title' is. So if our 'title' is "Chi", it will return media nodes whose title may be "Chicago" or "Chicken". The refinment request posted by the client is that there should be NO case-sensitivity. The very intuitive way is to modify the XQuery statement by using a lower-case funtion in it, like: $query := $mediaNodes//media[contains(lower-case(title/text(),lower-case($title))], However, the question comes: this modified query will run my machine into memory overflow. Since my "media_data.xml" is quite huge and contains thouands of millions of media nodes, I assume the lower-case() function will run on each of the entries, thus causing the machine to crash. I've talked with some experienced XQuery programmer, and they think I should use an index to solve this problem, and I will definitely research into that. But before that, I am just posting this problem here to get other ideas or any suggestions, do you think any other way may help? for example, could I tweak the Java parse statement to realize the case-insensitivity? Since I think I saw some people did some string concatination by using "contains." in Java before passing it to the server. Any idea or help is welcomed, thanks in advance.

• Python script run via cron does not execute occassionally

  I have a simple python script for fetching tweets and caching them to disk that is configured to run every two minutes via cron. */2 * * * * (date ; /usr/bin/python /path/get_tweets.py) >> /path/log/get_tweets.log 2>&1 The script runs successfully most of the time. However, every so often the script doesn't execute. In addition to other logging, I added a simple print statement above the meat of the script and nothing except the output from the initial date command makes it to the log. #!/usr/bin/python # Script for fetching tweets and then storing them as an HTML snippet for inclusion using SSI print "Starting get_tweets.py" Any ideas? The system is a VPS running Centos 5.3 with python 2.4.

• Catching KeyboardInterrupt when working with PyGame

  I have written a small Python application where I use PyGame for displaying some simple graphics. I have a somewhat simple PyGame loop going in the base of my application, like so: stopEvent = Event() # Just imagine that this eventually sets the stopEvent # as soon as the program is finished with its task. disp = SortDisplay(algorithm, stopEvent) def update(): """ Update loop; updates the screen every few seconds. """ while True: stopEvent.wait(options.delay) disp.update() if stopEvent.isSet(): break disp.step() t = Thread(target=update) t.start() while not stopEvent.isSet(): for event in pygame.event.get(): if event.type == pygame.QUIT: stopEvent.set() It works all fine and dandy for the normal program termination; if the PyGame window gets closed, the application closes; if the application finishes its task, the application closes. The trouble I'm having is, if I Ctrl-C in the Python console, the application throws a KeyboardInterrupt, but keeps on running. The question would therefore be: What have I done wrong in my update loop, and how do I rectify it so a KeyboardInterrupt causes the application to terminate?

• Need a push in the write direction, to write my first functional test in Rails?

  Hi, I've read quiet a bit of documentation over the last few days about testing in Rails, I'm sitting down to write my first real test and not 100% sure how to tie what I have learned together to achieve the following functional test (testing a controller) I need to send a GET request to a URL and pass 3 parameters (simple web-service), if the functionality works the keyword "true" is simply returned, otherwise the keyword "false" is returned - its in only value returned & not contained in any , or other tags. The test should assert that if "true" is returned the test is successful. This is probably very simple so apologies for such a non-challenging question. If anyone could point me in the write direction on how I can get started, particularly how I can test the response, I'd be very grateful! Thanks!

• Creating Ruby applications for Windows.

  I want to develop a Windows application. Honestly I care little about cross-platforms for now (but still would be good) I want to use Ruby, since it has quite a simple syntax and is so.. well, simple and easy to learn. My application is like a "game level creator", where you can design your own level and then run it with another application which is a "game level player" by reading the project file created by the creator app. You get the idea. Now, I got a new PC and is completely clean. Absolutely no trace of my old Ruby experiments and fails. First of all, I will need to choose a GUI platform for my Ruby application! Can you recommend me one? I have heard of Shoes and Tk, but want to know what you think.

• convert string to dict using list comprehension in python

  I have came across this problem a few times and can't seem to figure out a simple solution. Say I have a string string = "a=0 b=1 c=3" I want to convert that into a dictionary with a, b and c being the key and 0, 1, and 3 being their respective values (converted to int). Obviously I can do this: list = string.split() dic = {} for entry in list: key, val = entry.split('=') dic[key] = int(val) But I don't really like that for loop, It seems so simple that you should be able to convert it to some sort of list comprehension expression. And that works for slightly simpler cases where the val can be a string. dic = dict([entry.split('=') for entry in list]) However, I need to convert val to an int on the fly and doing something like this is syntactically incorrect. dic = dict([[entry[0], int(entry[1])] for entry.split('=') in list]) So my question is: is there a way to eliminate the for loop using list comprehension? If not, is there some built in python method that will do that for me?

  Is it possible to create email addresses like these: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] and have them all handled by one mail server, as three different mail boxes? (Many examples I've seen talk about directing mail to [email protected] into the same mail box as [email protected] - but this is not what I'm looking for.) I haven't specified the server technology being used because I'm wondering if this is generally possible. If you know that server x can do this, please mention it in your answer! Is it correct that MX records can be set to direct email to all subdomains *.mydomain.com to one mail server? Is that still true if there are also web sites at those subdomains (using A records)? • Screenflick Audio option in MacBook Pro

  When after I shut down my MacBook Pro by holding the power button for a few sec, (which I found is bad for the computer, so I will not do anymore) I found that my speaker doesn't play until I plug in and out earphone into the machine. When my speaker is not working like this, and when I am on a random webcam chatting site like chatroulette.com, they can hear the music playing on my iTunes when I choose Screenflick Audio option in the Mic setting. But when the Speaker is working back again, they don't hear the music playing even when I do Screenflick Audio mode. How can I make it work? Also, how do you make the chatting partner hear my music playing on my computer while I talk to them (not via my speaker, since it's bad quality).

• ASP.NET Compiles on page load, but not on Ctrl+Shift+B

  during debug in cassini the code runs fine, but when I explictly build it, the compile breaks on an object saying it can't find the reference. During a breakpoint shows the proper reference to the object, and I can view the debug intellisense. The code itself is simple using CFTW.Controls; ... controls_LatestPresentations c = LoadControl("~/controls/LatestPresentations.ascx") as controls_LatestPresentations; c.loadContent(); return RenderControl(c); The control is a simple user control, with the namespace CFTW.Controls. The calling code is in a webcontrol, which lives in the same folder. I even tried adding the calling code to the same namespace.

• MySQL ERROR 1045 Access Denied

  Hello- I recently installed MySQL on Fedora13. Now, when I try to create a database, it denies me access. I tried resetting the password and it does not recognize my system root. I tried resetting password with an init-file containing: UPDATE mysql.user SET Password=PASSWORD('MyNewPass') WHERE User='root'; FLUSH PRIVILEGES; I tried uninstall and then reinstall and it is still not working. I am new to Linux and not comfortable with the filesystem. Talk to me like I'm four. Thank you, kindly.

• Extracting text from PDF with Poppler (C++)

  I'm trying to get my way through Poppler and its (lack of) documentation. What I want to do is a very simple thing: open a PDF file and read the text in it. I'm then going to process the text, but that doesn't really matter here. So... I saw the poppler_page_get_text function, and it kind of works, but I have to specify a selection rectangle, which is not very handy. Isn't there just a very simple function that would output the PDF text in order (maybe line by line?). Thank you Nicola

• Very Different Execution Times of SQL Query in C# and SQL Server Management Studio

  I have a simple SQL query that when run from C# takes over 30 seconds then times-out every time, whereas when run on SQL Server Management Studio successfully completes instantly. In the latter case, a query execution plan reveals nothing troubling, and the execution time is spread nicely through a few simple operations. I've run 'EXEC sp_who2' while the query is running from C#, and it is listed as taking 29,000 milliseconds of CPU time, and is not blocked by anything. I have no idea how to begin solving this. Does anyone have some insight? The query is: SELECT c.lngId, ...   So Ive got a pretty big array of data and need to sort them by two criteria. There is variable $data['important'] and $data['basic']. They are simple numbers and I am using uasort to sort $data firstly by important and then by basic. So Important | Basic 10 | 8 9 | 9 9 | 7 7 | 9 The usort function is a simple public function sort_by_important($a, $b) { if ($a[important] > $b[important]) { return -1; } elseif ($b[important] > $a[important]) { return 1; } else { return 0; } } How can I re-sort the array to the second variable and keep the Important ordering? • [0-9a-zA-Z]* string expressed with primes or prime-factorization-style way to break it into parts?

  Suppose a string consists of numbers and alphabets. You want to break it into parts, an analogy is primes' factorization, but how can you do similar thing with strings [0-9a-zA-Z]* or even with arbitrary strings? I could express it in alphabets and such things with octal values and then prime-factorize it but then I need to keep track of places where I had the non-numbers things. Is there some simple way to do it? I am looking for simple succinct solutions and don't want too much side-effects. [Update] mvds has the correct idea, to change the base, how would you implement it?

  This looks like something simple but I could not find the answer so far - I have just learnt python and need to start learning pdb. In my module I have the usual if __name__ == __main_ trick to execute some code when the module is run as a program. So far I have been running it via python -m mymod arg1 arg2 syntax Now I want to do exactly the same thing from inside pdb. Normally in C, I would just do gdb mybinary followed by run arg1 arg2 But I cannot figure out how to achieve the same thing in pdb. I am sure there has to be a simple way to achieve this but it is taking me too long to search for it.. Thanks for your help!

  I have a simple application to store Contacts. This application uses a simple relational database to store Contact information, like Name, Address and other data fields. While designing it, I question came to my mind: When designing programs that uses databases, should I retrieve all database records and store them in objects in my program, so I have a very fast performance or I should always gather data only when required? Of course, retrieving all data can only be done if it`s not too many, but do you use this approach when you make sure that the database will be small (< 300 records for example)? I have designed once a similar application that fetches data only when needed, but that was slow (using a Access database). Thanks for all help.

• Advantages to upgrading from SharePoint Foundation 2010?

  I feel like this should be extremely obvious, but after staring at this document from Microsoft and Googling for a while I'm still at a loss as to the advantages of SharePoint Server 2010 and SharePoint Enterprise 2010 over SharePoint Foundation 2010. My users currently use SharePoint Foundation 2010 to collaborate on a handful of excel documents within the office. There is talk of expanding to have a second and third SharePoint server at another plant and at our corporate offices. If there is a reason to upgrade now would be a good time to ask for the money while we're talking expansion. Is it worth it from either an administrative or an end-user perspective? Or is the free version really just that wonderful?
