  • Looking for an Open Source Project in need of help

    Hi StackOverflow! I'm a CS student on well on my way to graduate. I have had a difficult time of finding relevant student jobs (they seems to be taken merely hours after the notice gets on the board) , so instead I'm looking for an open source project in need of help. I'm aware that I should choose one that I use, but I'm not aware of any OS-project that I use that needs help. That's why I'm asking you. I don't have any deep experience, but I here are some of my biggest projects so far: BitTorrent-ish client in Python (a subset of BitTorrent) HTTP 1.1 webserver in Java Compiler from a subset of Java to run on JRE Flash-framework project to model an iPad look and feel (not to run actual iPad programs) complete with an API for programs. Complete MySQL database for a booking system, with departure and arrival times, so you could only book valid tickets (with a Java frontend). I know, Java and languages like AS3 and C# feels natural per se, Python, and have done a fair bit of hacking around in C, but I don't feel very comfortable with it. Mostly I'm afraid to make a fuckup because I have such a high degree of control. I would like to think I'm well aware of good software design practices, but in reality what I do is ask myself "would I like to use/maintain this?", and I love to refactor my code because I see optimizations. I love algorithms and to make them run in the best possible time. I don't have any preferred domain to work in, but I wouldn't mind it to be graphics or math heavy. Ideally I'm looking for a project in C++ to learn the in's and out's of it, but I'm well aware that I don't know that language very well. I would like to have a mentor-like figure until I'm confident enough to stand on my own, not one to review all my code (I'm sure someone will to start with anyway), but to ask questions about the project and language in question. I do have a wife and two children, so don't expect me to put in 10+ hours every week. In return I can work on my own, I strive to program modular and maintainable code. Know how to read an API, use Google, StackOverflow and online resources in general. If you have any questions, shoot. I'm looking forward to your suggestions.

  • My windows xp wireless hotspot isn't working

    I add the hotspot the regular way. Yet it doesn't show up as available when I try to connect to it using my other Ubuntu laptop. And nothing can connect to it. Yesterday, I successfully made it work for 5 minutes and then it stopped without me changing any configuration. I've already tryed resetting the DNS. Edit: I've updated my Broadcom 802.11b/g driver to a generic but more recent version. I've also repaired the WMI, now the advanced tab of my primary connection is available and the hand meaning the connection is shared appeared. But the computers still connect the wrong way around. (Windows to ubuntu instead of ubuntu to windows) Reinstalled SP3...

  • make quantaplus a default editor for php files in ubuntu

    In Ubuntu, how can I make Quanta Plus the default editor for PHP files? In Windows we just use the open with context menu the first time for any new types of files and check use this application for these type of files. After that the files always open up in checked application. I want to know if Ubuntu has a similar feature. Also, if I open 2 PHP files then two instance of Quanta Plus opens up. How can I get the secondary PHP files to open on another tab instead?

  • Folder Redirection won't load on Windows 7 Machine in Windows 2008 R2 Network

    Okay so redirected profiles don't load exactly, but the computer is joined to the network and it won't display any of the users files on their desktop that are in their redirected profile. I know this because we have a Terminal Server and when the user logs in there, her files appear. I checked the users' profile in Active Directory Users and Computers and compared it with a working users profile. When that didn't turn up any differences, I looked at her computer and found that on the Dial-in tab the Network Access Permission wasn't set to Control access through NPS Network Policy like it was on the other machines on the network; so I selected it, ran gpupdate /force on her machine and rebooted. This did not fix the issue. Is there anything else that could be preventing the redirected files on the users desktop from showing up when the user logs in?

  • Dynamic Multiple Choice (Like a Wizard) - How would you design it? (e.g. Schema, AI model, etc.)

    This question can probably be broken up into multiple questions, but here goes... In essence, I'd like to allow users to type in what they would like to do and provide a wizard-like interface to ask for information which is missing to complete a requested query. For example, let's say a user types: "What is the weather like in Springfield?" We recognize the user is interested in weather, but it could be Springfield, Il or Springfield in another state. A follow-up question would be: What Springfield did you want weather for? 1 - Springfield, Il 2 - Springfield, Wi You can probably think of a million examples where a request is missing key data or its ambiguous. Make the assumption the gist of what the user wants can be understood, but there are missing pieces of data required to complete the request. Perhaps you can take it as far back as asking what the user wants to do and "leading" them to a query. This is not AI in the sense of taking any input and truly understanding it. I'm not referring to having some way to hold a conversation with a user. It's about inferring what a user wants, checking to see if there is an applicable service to be provided, identifying the inputs needed and overlaying that on top of what's missing from the request, then asking the user for the remaining information. That's it! :-) How would you want to store the information about services? How would you go about determining what was missing from the input data? My thoughts: Use regex expressions to identify clear pieces of information. These will be matched to the parameters of a service. Figure out which parameters do not have matching data and look up the associated question for those parameters. Ask those questions and capture answers. Re-run the service passing in the newly captured data. These would be more free-form questions. For multiple choice, identify the ambiguity and search for potential matches ranked in order of likelihood (add in user history/preferences to help decide). Provide the top 3 as choices.   • Configure Ubuntu9.10 to see hardware of my laptop

    I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop. But it can't see all the hardware of the laptop. I would like some help. my laptop has 8G (in Windows7), but Ubuntu only see 2.9G (I get this value from System Monitor under Resource tab my laptop can have 1600x900 resolution (it works in Windows7), but i can only set to 1280x800 in Ubunutu my wireless card does not work. But my wired connection works. Can you please help me in configuring my Ubuntu environment?

But if I try this in Python: import urllib site = 'http://bitbucket.org/tortoisehg/stable/wiki/Home/ReleaseNotes' req = urllib.urlopen(site) text = req.read() I get the following: 500 Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. What am I doing wrong?

  • Calling pthread_cond_signal without locking mutex

    Hi, I read somewhere that we should lock the mutex before calling pthread_cond_signal and unlock the mutext after calling it: The pthread_cond_signal() routine is used to signal (or wake up) another thread which is waiting on the condition variable. It should be called after mutex is locked, and must unlock mutex in order for pthread_cond_wait() routine to complete. My question is: isn't it OK to call pthread_cond_signal or pthread_cond_broadcast methods without locking the mutex?

  • Django HttpResponseRedirect acting as proxy rather than 302

    I have a Django method that's returning return HttpResponseRedirect("/redirect-target") When running the server locally, if I visit the page that returns that redirect, I get the log output [17/Oct/2013 15:26:02] "GET /redirecter HTTP/1.1" 302 0 [17/Oct/2013 15:26:02] "GET /redirect-target HTTP/1.1" 404 0 as expected. But, when I visit that page in Chrome, the Network tab shows the request to /redirecter with the response from /redirect-target, rather than showing the 302. cURL does the same: $ curl -I -X GET http://localhost/redirecter HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found date: Thu, 17 Oct 2013 19:32:30 GMT connection: keep-alive transfer-encoding: chunked In production, the same Django code does show a 302 redirect in Chrome and cURL. What could be going on here? Is there some kind of Django setting that might be causing it to proxy the target rather than send a redirect when HttpResponseRedirect is used (but lie about it in the log)? Or is there a quirk on my system (OS X) that might cause localhost redirects to behave this way?

  • Cannot assign port 4 to WAN on TP-Link WR740N by DD-WRT wiki

    I'm following the DD-WRT instruction to get TP-Link WR740N v3's Port 4 on a different VLAN, but this doesn't happen. First, I have no "Setup VLANs" settinngs tab in DD-WRT v24-sp2 (07/20/12) std r19519. I can get Internet on Wi-Fi if assigning eth1 to "WAN Port", but then all Ethernet ports get on the same VLAN and any wired connection grabs the DHCP address and Internet connection from router. When following the "old" instruction, if I run, say, nvram set vlan2ports="2 5*", should there appear a new interface, vlan2, in ifconfig, after ifconfig vlan2 up? It doesn't - does it mean there is no support for different VLANs in my software/hardware? What am I missing? Is it impossible to create more VLANs on TP-Link740?

    I am trying to retrieve a 500mb file using Python, and I have a script which uses urllib.urlretrieve(). There seems to some network problem between me and the download site, as this call consistently hangs and fails to complete. However, using wget to retrieve the file tends to work without problems. What is the difference between urlretrieve() and wget that could cause this difference?

  • In Linux, are there any plug-ins to let me do `<Win>`+`<Num>` style app switching (like Windows 7's superbar)?

    Using Windows 7's superbar, I can select/launch the 2nd application group by <Win>+<2>. We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts. Any suggestions? This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?

  • Importing CSV files into Excel using a macro

    I'm want to develop a macro where in my excel worksheet I type a date in a specific cell, and the macro will go into a folder containing text files. A database you could say. I want it to find the corresponding file name which is written as a date, put the data through a delimeter, and paste into the cells directly below where I orginally put the date. I'm very new with Macro's so if you must answer try to be a little more simple than you might usually be. Thanks In Advance if anyone can Help!! Update The folder will always be in the same place and the text files will all be formatted DD_MM_YYYY.     I have a UCMA service that sends a URL to load in a communicator extensibility tab as mentioned here: http://blogs.claritycon.com/blogs/michael_greenlee/archive/2009/02/19/context-windows-in-communicator-using-ucma-v2-0.aspx http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ucclientsdk/thread/4406e412-01f1-466f-a593-3b83652dcdb1 This works fine with Office Communicator 2007 R2 for most trusted links, and on Windows XP and 2003 it works fine with a page with an ActiveX control. However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

    Hi all, I have some javascript making an ajax call in my Rails site: $.ajax({type: "PUT", url: url, data: { dummy: data }, complete: function(data) {}}); When Rails gets it, it throws back an ActionController::InvalidAuthenticityToken Error. I'd like to keep the protect_from_forgery stuff in there, if possible... But I'm at a loss for how can I pass the auth token from a javascript file? Can anyone help me out?

  • How disable Apple iCal from popping up with every email invite/update?

    My iCal has new behavior (since upgrading to SL). Every time I get an ical attachment in Mail, the iCal app flies up in my face. I don't see any way to turn off this behavior and it's amazingly disruptive when I'm busy with other activities. Help? EDIT: I want iCal to add the invitations, so when I cmd-tab to the app those items are in the queue awaiting approval. What I am hoping to learn is how to stop the popup action forcing the application to become the top-level window.

  • How do I directly add/pin web page to Google Chrome jump list?

    Sometimes I want to (easily) add the link for a web page I'm viewing with Google Chrome to Chome's Windows 7 jump list. Is there a way to do this? I have tried dragging the bookmark/star to the left of the URL in the address bar onto Chrome's jump list, but this doesn't seem to "take". The only way I have found that works is rather kludgey. If I close the tab for the page I want to add then it shows up in the jump list under "Recently Closed". I can then pin the link to the jump list. It would be nice to have a way to add a web page to the jump list without first having to close it.

  • how can I see a page's referrer in Chrome?

    I've read the "answers" on this question, which is pretty much what I'm asking, but no one actually provides an answer. Nowhere in the Developer Tools (that I can see, anyway) is there a clear indicator of the current page's referring page. This is something that's really easy to find in Firefox; just right-click and choose Page Info. Where is this functionality in Chrome? If it's in the developer tools, which tab is it under? If it's not, is there an extension I can use to get this info? I've tried the Web Developer extension, and can't seem to find this very basic piece of info there, either.

  • View unknown content-types in Firefox?

    A certain URL on my server returns Content-Type: application/json. The filename ends with .phtml, so whenever I go to it, Firefox 3.5 asks me if I want to save it or open it with another program. But the answer is neither; I want to view it in Firefox as if it was text/plain. Suggestions? The Applications tab of the Preferences window doesn't give this as an option for the "PHTML" type which now is listed in there (ever since I tried to open it with no external program).

    I use firefox as my default browser. IE and chrome are used as secondary browsers. Apart from these, i need to have a alternate browser. I tried opera, but when installing it, opera automatically imported all my bookmarks and other profile data from firefox folder. I really had a hard time safely deleting these files that opera made a copy, without harming the original files which firefox uses. I don't want this to happen. Here's the situation: Now, i want to install other browser or re install opera. How do i make the firefox profile folder to be accessed only by firefox.exe and me(the administrator)? Can this be done via security tab under folder properties?

  • How to solve this problem with a 'tuned' prompt in ZSH?

    I have an adjusted prompt in my ZSH-configuration. Main feature is, that this prompt is colored red, so that I can easily it distinguish from the outputs of programs. My prompt is defined as follows: PROMPT=$'\e[0;31m%n@%m:%~> \e[0m' This works mostly fine, but sometimes my cursor switches to another position on tab-completion and some characters are left behind on the screen and mangle up the commandline. That is a little annoyance, but if someone knows a solution for this, I would appreciate it.
