  • Has anyone done CSDP certification?

    I was looking at some certifications that can potentially enhance my knowledge and market value as a Software Engineer. IEEE's Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) caught my attention. When I looked on the net for any user experiences with it I couldn't find anything substantial. Doesn't seem too popular. And I certainly havent heard of anyone in my organization or friends circle who have done it. I would like to know from community members if anyone has done this certification and their experiences with the same. Was the certification useful in terms of knowledge. Did it add weight to your resume (not deadweight!)?

  • Reset Windows Password with Ubuntu Live CD

    A friend brought me his PC with Windows Vista to reset the user password because he didn't use it for a long while and forgot his password. So I found a tutorial on how to reset the password by using a Ubuntu Live CD and the software chntpw. After I installed this software I mounted the SYSTEM partition by opening it with the file explorer. It is now available at /media/SYSTEM/ The tutorial says I have to open the file /windows/system32/config/sam with chntpw and reset the password with chntpw -u USERNAME sam After I did this it didn't show me any errors. So I unmounted the partition and rebooted the PC with the installed Windows Vista. It is still locked with the old password. Did I do any mistakes or is there an other way to reset the password?

  • What are the real life implications for an Apache 2 license?

    I want to use SVG Edit for project. This software is distributed under the Apache 2 license. I've seen that: all copies, modified or unmodified, are accompanied by a copy of the licence all modifications are clearly marked as being the work of the modifier all notices of copyright, trademark and patent rights are reproduced accurately in distributed copies the licensee does not use any trademarks that belong to the licensor Do these pertain to the code or should I display the license somewhere in the GUI? The orignal software displays a "powered by SVG Edit", is it ok if I remove this? And most importantly: what is the correct etiquette for doing this? I don't want to be an asshole, but at the same time I want to simplify the UI as much as possible and removing the link will be part of it if it's not considered rude.

  • What should I use Ubuntu for? [closed]

    I need some of your precious advice co-Ubuntu users. I have been a full Ubuntu user for a few months now and our old 2005 model PC just broke down and so my parents gave me a new PC (notebook). I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate for some reason. Now, my problem is that, since I am a amateur graphic designer, website developer, software developer and other professions a normal teenager won't try and I am using Adobe Creative Suite CS6 Master Collection for my multimedia creation and web development needs, what could I use Ubuntu Linux for? Software development? Website Usability Testing? Other Multimedia stuff? Etc.? Need real help because my mind is getting confused in what should I use Ubuntu for... Any help will be welcomed with appreciation. :D P.S. Don't suggest to me any games because I'm no gamer.

    Doing a lot of reading about V&V, I would need to clarify the following. A lot of definitons (less formal ones found in books) define verification like that: Verification: The software should conform to its specification. But then they speak about requirement verification, design verification etc. If I say that these items are "software" in terms of applying the definitons, what should I checked them against, what specification should requirements, which is the basic information, conform to? And one more thing: shouldnt be requirements also validated? To make sure they meets the customer needs? All texts I have speak only about SW validation on the end of the dev.process..

  • Can you delete the Humanity icon theme safely?

    I'm trying to reduce used space after running disk usage analyser, since I'm using a 40GB SSD. The icons use quite a bit of space! Could I delete those that I don't use, such as humanity? (I use Faenza-Dark) If it is possible, what would be the best way to this? as when I attempt to remove humanity in the Software Centre it says the software-centre itself must be removed. Similar problems arise with synaptic package manager. I was wary of just deleting the unused directories in usr/share/icons/. Thanks for the help!

    I fell in love with ubuntu when 10.10 was released. It was the perfect OS for me, but then, the 11 and the 12 series came, and I starting hating it (Pun intended) But seriously, I want to stick to ubuntu 10.10, I have the .iso file with me. I want to go ahead and install it. My question is, since its not currently supported, what problems will I face? Will I be eligible for update? I mean atleast till the time it was supported Can I somehow get security updates and patches Will the latest software available still run on ubuntu 10.10 I don't care much about drivers, as much as I care about python, php, apache, wine and other softwares. Will the software center work?and be updates as well? What issues am I most prone to face?

I know that i can just remove the internal keyboards wire and disconnect it physically, but i wanted to disable it using software so that later I can enable it by just executing a command in terminal easily. I am talking about disabling the keyboard and NOT the keyboard layout. I am having Hp-Compaq Presario A965 TU Laptop Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo(Freq. 2 GHz). I am using 64 bit Ubuntu Lucid Lynx.

  • Infrared usb adapter not hot pluggable?

    For transferring exercise files from my Polar heart rate monitor i use the software Protrainer 5 with an external infrared usb adapter. Using Wine to run Protrainer 5 and some adjustments mentioned here (using irda-utils) i managed to make it work. Well, sort of: every time i want to transfer exercise files and the adapter is not plugged in i have to reboot my laptop with the usb adapter plugged in to make it work. Since i have a laptop it unfortunately is no option to just always leave the adapter in. It seems to me that the usb adapter isn't hot pluggable (which seems odd for a usb device) or there must be another problem. Polar WebLink (other software to transfer exercise files) experiences the same issue. Can anyone help me to fix this problem?   • Server-infrastructure recommendations

    Here's the thing: I need a cheap, fast, reliable infrastructure that can dynamically scale (like Amazon S3: cloud-storage). I'm thinking of 3 different type of 'servers'. Application-server Should be able to run CentOS (or another light Linux-distr.) Should be able to run Apache Should be able to run PHP Should be able to run GD (so it does rely on it's cpu). Should be extremely reliable and fast. Database-server Should be able to run MySQL Should be able to... well, do nothing else :P. Should be extremely reliable and fast. Storage-server Should be able to run some kind of file-transfer-deamon (like FTP, CouchDB, etc.) Should be able to do nothing else. Should be extremely reliable and fast. So technically, by transferring all static data to 2 different servers/services, the application-server can totally focus on the webpages. My questions: What services do you recommend? Which is cheaper, faster and more reliable: using my own server, or using some cloud-storage/cloud-computing-service (like Amazon S3, CloudFiles, etc.)? How can I prevent bandwidth abuse (such as dos-attacks causing the bill to be extremely high)? What's the difference between "including CDN" and "excluding CDN"? It seems the price doesn't differ at CloudFiles? Do you have to pay "including CDN" + "excluding CDN" when you decide to enable the delivery-network? Or have you only got to pay "including CDN"? Should I use my own nameserver too or can I use my domain-hoster's nameservers? What are the minimum software specifications of a nameserver. Can I write some software myself? Does anyone have a good protocol-description? I hope you can answer my questions. Answers I shouldn't write my own nameserver-software. Instead, I should use something like bind.   • What types of programming require practical category theory?

    Category theory has applications in theoretical computer science and obviously is central to abstract mathematics. I have heard that it also has direct practical applications in programming and software development. What type of programming is practical category theory necessary for? What do programmers use category theory to accomplish? Please note my use of "necessary" and "require" in this post. I realize that in some sense most programmers will benefit from having experience in different types of theories, but I am looking for direct applications where the usage of category theory is essential, i.e. if you didn't know category theory, you probably couldn't do it. Also, I'd like to clarify that by "what type of programming," I am hoping less for a broad answer like "functional programming," and more for specific applications like "writing bank software" or "making operating systems."

  • Is there a difference between "self-plagiarizing" in programming vs doing so as a writer?

    I read this Gawker article about how a writer reused some of his older material for new assignments for different magazines. Is there any similar ethical (societal?) dilemma when doing the same thing in the realm of Programming? Does reusing a shared library you've accumulated over the years amount to self-plagarizm? What I'm getting at is that it seems that the creative world of software development isn't as stringent regarding self-plagarism as say journalism or blogging. In fact on one of my interviews at GS I was asked what kind of libraries I've developed over the years, implying that me getting the job would entail co-licensing helpful portions of code to that company. Are there any cases where although it's legal to self-plagarize, it would be frowned upon in the software world?

These directories would then serve as first incoming links to your web site. How about today? I think download directories are pretty much dead? Do you think this is still good SEO approach today? I can believe that lead developers have them, but thats normally just one person in your average office. If it would not be to much to ask: Do you work in a totally awesome office or a nasty old cube? (or somewhere in between) What's your relative rank in the office? (junior, programmer II, senior, lead, etc.) are you doing internal software, or are you in a software-centric environment? (the general thought seems to be that internal developers get cubes while others live in "Joel-Spolsky-Programmer-Candyland")

    I've been a solo .NET programmer for a small startup for the last 8 years. I've put together some pretty decent software, and I always strived to better myself and conform to best practices, including source control (SVN/TFS). I worked very closely with a team of engineers of other disciplines, but when it came down to the software I was the only one programming. I love the craft of programming and love learning new things to sharpen my tools. In 2 weeks I will be starting a new job in a team of 20 .NET developers. My position will be mid-level, and I will be working under some programmers with incredibly impressive backgrounds. Again, the team aspect of development will be new to me, so I'm looking for some general "new guy" tips that will help me be as effective and easy to get along with as possible from the get-go. Anything goes, including high level tips, and small day-to-day things about communication.

With just 24 billion devices, they will outnumber humans six to one! So as a developer, you don't want to ignore this opportunity. What if you could use your Java skills and deploy an app to a fraction of these devices (don't be greedy, how about just, say, 118,000 of them)? Fareed Suliman, Java ME Product Manager had lots of good news for Java Developers in his presentation Modernizing the Explosion of Advanced Microcontrollers with Embedded Java at ARM TechCon in Santa Clara, CA last week. "A radical architecture shift is underway in this space, from proprietary to standards-based," he explained.  He pointed out several advantages to using Embedded Java for devices: Java is a proven and open standard. Java provides connectivity, encryption, location, and web services APIs. You don't have to focus on and keep reinventing the plumbing below the JVM. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows you to repeat your app across many devices. Abstracting the software from the hardware allows allows parallel development so you can get your app done more quickly. You already know Java (or you can hire lots of Java talent). Java is a full ecosystem, with Java Embedded plugins for IDEs like Eclipse and NetBeans. Java ME allows for in-field software upgrades.
