• Git Use Remote Source Durring Push

  I have a local git repository a "central" repo at github. I'm working on a part of a project, while a friend is working on a related piece that is its entirely seperate repo, is it possible for me to simply link directly to my friends repo? For example, the app is called widgets. I have all my code in widgets/app/mycode and my friend is writing code that goes into widgets/plugins/awesome/hiscode. I want to be able to always have http://github.com/mycode/widgets/plugins/hiscode to be a direct link or clone to http://github.com/hiscode/awesome ? It could be possible i'm missing something basic in my question or knowledge of git, if so please ask, and i'll be happy to try to fill in the blanks. I am deploying to my production site via capistrano, so maybe a script of some kind may be easier?? I don't know (that's why i'm posting)!!

• Send Keyboard Input to VMWare from C#

  Hi. I want to send mouse clicks and keyboards keys to a window running a virtual machine such as VMware or VirtualBox. I want to pilotate it from the host OS, from an application written in C#. I can move and click the mouse. But I can't send keyboard input. I tried with SendKeys but it doesn't work. With every other "normal" window, it works. But I think it's related to how VMware or Virtual BOx intercept keyboard events. Any idea?

• Does javascript event handling occur inside or outside the program flow?

  This question is related to Javascript event handling and flow control, but it is one step beyond. The question that remains unanswered is: when an event is fired and control is returned to the browser, could the browser decide to handle other events first (fired by other scripts or user action) (A), or will it always handle my event directly (B)? The question is important, because in case (B) you can rely on the fact that nothing has been changed between firing the event and the event handler, while (A) gives no guarantees whatsoever. My first guess is (B), how else could stopPropagation() and preventDefault() work? But giving it a second thought, it is no hard evidence.

• iPython in Emacs. Quick code evaluation

  Hi all, I would like to "send" code snippets to a iPython interpreter in Emacs 23.2 (Linux). I have two related questions about this: Q1: I have learned that Emacs provides ('shell-command-on-region') to run selected regions in a shell. I have set setq shell-file-name to my iPython path, but when I run M-| after selecting a region, Emacs prompts me the following: Shell command on region: and if I then type RET, I get the iPython man page on the *Shell Command Output* buffer, without the region being executed. Why? Q2: Assuming that I have already started an iPython shell in some other buffer in Emacs, is there a way of selecting a region in another buffer and "sending" this region to the already-started iPython shell?   i want to create a external dll to store my .resx files. i want to do this because i need to access this files from both presentation and business layers. I have created a external project that contains the default and the es-Es resx files. i have mark it as PublicResXFileCodeGenerator to be able to access it from another dll. on my view i have this test <%=localization.Common.title.ToString() % when i'm run the application i always get this error "Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture. Make sure "localization.Common.resources" was correctly embedded or linked into assembly "localization" at compile time, or that all the satellite assemblies required are loadable and fully signed." i have read some this related to ddl signing... but i don't now if this is the problem.

• Automatic website screenshots for Web app?

  Is there a way to take automatic screenshots of a web page (by specifying its URL) in a web app using PHP or Ruby on Rails? Perhaps using a plugin or some external REST service. I've researched a lot, and nothing seems to fit except something like this (http://www.binarymoon.co.uk/2010/02/automated-take-screenshots-website-free/) but I doubt Wordpress would just let me spam their servers for something not Wordpress related. I'd like to use it for my own web application so I'm not sure of the legal implications..how hard is this to implement myself? What does it entail? Thanks!

"\n"; } I'm buzzled by each operator on the first line. What type exactly are $response, $respone-{bucket}. Looks like the expression within the 'for' is an array, but I don't understand this syntax: @{ ... }?

  How do you deal with analysis and design phases when you plan to develop a system using a functional programming language like Haskell? My background is in imperative/object-oriented programming languages, and therefore, I am used to use case analysis and the use of UML to document the design of program. But the thing is that UML is inherently related to the object-oriented way of doing software. And I am intrigued about what would be the best way to develop documentation and define software designs for a system that is going to be developed using functional programming. Would you still use use case analysis or perhaps structured analysis and design instead? How do software architects define the high-level design of the system so that developers follow it? What do you show to you clients or to new developers when you are supposed to present a design of the solution? How do you document a picture of the whole thing without having first to write it all? Is there anything comparable to UML in the functional world?

• Kohana v2 - problem with routes

  Hi, I'm attempting to set some custom routes in Kohana v2. What I'm looking for is some method that allow the system to : follow a pre-defined name to it's related root; redirect the non-matched url's into another controller; To give you a more clear view over the problem, I want the first url parameter to be associated to certain pages (contacts, home, services, about us, etc), and those urls who doesn't match the previous pages would be routed into a controller called products, in order to determine if the first url parameter regards a product name. Here's a sample of what I have : $config['_default'] = 'home'; $config['([a-zA-Z]+)'] = 'products/showcat/$1'; What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

• Learning OpenGL ES 1.x

  What is the quickest way to come up to speed on OpenGL ES 1.x? Let's assume I know nothing about OpenGL (which is not entirely true, but it's been a while since I last used OpenGL). I am most interested in learning this for iPhone-related development, but I'm interested in learning how it works on other platforms as well. I've found the book OpenGL ES 2.0 Programming Guide, but I am concerned that it might not be the best approach because it focuses on 2.0 rather than 1.x. My understanding is that 2.0 is not backwards-compatible with 1.x, so I may miss out on some important concepts. • How to remove EXIF data without recompressing the JPEG?

  I want to remove the EXIF information (including thumbnail, metadata, camera info... everything!) from JPEG files, but I don't want to recompress it, as recompressing the JPEG will degrade the quality, as well as usually increasing the file size. I'm looking for a Unix/Linux solution, even better if using the command-line. If possible, using ImageMagick (convert tool). If that's not possible, a small Python, Perl, PHP (or other common language on Linux) script would be ok. There is a similar question, but related to .net.

• Rails - Permission denied when try to save uploaded file in windows

  I'm writing my own file upload in rails. I saw some related questions but it doesn't answer my question. I use File.open ("#{RAILS_ROOT}/public/docs/attachments/#{@file_name}", "wb") {|f| f.write(@temp_file.read)} to write the file on my local machine (OS: Windows XP) instead of saving it in database. I got a Permission denied error on the File.open method. Since I have cygwin installed, I chmod 777 the folder that files should write to and also make sure the file I upload can be read. But I'm still getting the same error. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Tabcontainer in Master Page not working as expected

  Isn't TABCONTAINER supposed to be used in a MASTERPAGE? I started building my application in a single .aspx page with a tabcontainer to separate the different features in the application. My idea was to later break it up into individual pages with less code in each of them. I thought the use of a masterpage would be the perfect solutions... of course, this didn't work as expected. The problem is that all tabs, except the one related to the page loaded, for example tab1.aspx, are empty. If tab2.aspx is loaded, only tab2 is filled and so on. Is this a known bug or by design?

  I have a table which has approximately sixty tables, and other tables are added constantly. Each table is a part of a schema. A such quantity of tables makes it difficult to use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio 2008. For example, I must scroll up in object explorer to access database related functions, or scroll down each time I need to access Views or Security features. Is it possible to group several tables to be able to expand or collapse them in Object Explorer? Maybe a folder may be displayed for each schema, letting collapse the folders I don't need to use?

  Hi, I have a form changeed the properties of my object CUSTOMER. Each customer has related ORDERS. The ORDER's table has a column customer_id which is used for the mapping. All works so far, I can read customers without any problem. When I now e.g. change the name of the CUSTOMER in the form (which does NOT show the orders), after saving the name is updated, but all relations in the ORDERS table are set to NULL (the customer_id for the items is set to NULL. How can I keep the relationship working? THX

  First off I want to say that I wasn't really sure where to post this but it is very much programming related. If it is in the wrong spot I apologize and please let me know where I should post it instead. When sharing an article on a friends wall, facebook will grab a thumbnail of the article. How do they always get the right thumbnail from articles? It doesn't grab the logo img element of of http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/07/world/asia/07convoys.html?hp for example but rather grabs the correct image element that corresponds with the article. I'm looking to do something similar and was wondering of a good way to parse the html to find the image given this example. Thanks.

• Rails application and multilingual content, Model dilemma

  I'm writing in Rails a website that will be multilingual, for the application translation part i will use the simple I18n gem, for messages and everything related. Yet, all the content must be translated, and we're talking about lots of pages, that will be stored into the database ( like articles, news, etc. ) For now, I'm thinking of two approaches: Lets say i have a Pages table, the content in diff. languages, i will be storing it in a different table called PagesContent that will belong_to Pages and also to a Languages table. The problem here, is that I'll essentially duplicate the no. of tables needed. Pros: flexibility, in the box validation To skip that duplication i can serialize a hash into the content column of Pages, containing the translation. The problem here, is validation, arguably more code to write, and less flexibility when adding a new language. Pros: Less tables. Any other idea ?

• Rails: unexpected behavior updating a shared instance

  I have a User object, that is related to a Post object via two different association paths: Post --(has_many)-- comments --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Post --(belongs to)-- writer (of type User) Say the following hold: user1.name == "Bill" post1.comments[1].writer == user1 post1.writer == user1 Now when I retrieve the post1 and its comments from the database and I update post1.comments[1].writer like so: post1.comments[1].writer.name = "John" I would expect post1.writer to equal "John" too. But it doesn't! It still equals "Bill". So there seems to be some caching going on, but the kind I would not expect. I would expect Rails to be clever enough to load exactly one instance of the user with name "Bill"; instead is appears to load two individual ones: one for each association path. Can someone explain how this works exactly and how I am to handle these types of situations the "Rails way"?

  Hello, Just look for strategies that have been successful in rendering hierarchies that represent inheritance structures using SL3/4 TreeViews. I need to render certain nodes differently than others, depending upon what kind of container they are (a choice between things, or simply a list of related things, etc.) So far, I've been very successful with the DataTemplate route: I've been able to use a technique described in Ted Glaza's post "Easy DataTemplateSelectors in Silverlight" (you may have retrieve a Google cache of this page). SO what I'm trying to discover is something on the order of a StyleSelector, not a DataTemplateSelector. I'm considering leveraging my current implementations of Glaza's pattern of selector objects to somehow detect the node type and set the ItemContainerStyle there, but it doesn't seem clear right now.   Is it possible to configure Hibernate reverse engineering and code generation tool in such a way that one-to-many relation between tables is mapped to entities inheritance instead of enrites relation? I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest). In my Java code I would like this relation mapped to inheritance Employee extends Person. This can be done by hand, but maybe I missed some custom configuration parameter that I can use.   Hi, I'm developing a web site with asp.net on localhost, I'm beginner. I wrote a login page and it works well. However when I click a link, the server can't load the page and gives this error: A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) Any idea?

• Checking if parsed date is within a date range

  So I am using a scripting language with c++-like syntax, and I am trying to think of the best way to check if a date is within range. The problem I am running into is that if the current day is in a new month, the check is failing. Here is what my code looks like: if(iMonth >= iStartMonth && iMonth <= iEndMonth) { if(iDay >= iStartDay && iDay <= iEndDay) { if(iYear >= iStartYear && iYear <= iEndYear) { bEnabled = true; return; When I have something like this: Start date: 3 27 2010 End Date: 4 15 2010 Current Date: 3 31 2010 The day check fails because if (iDay <= iEndDay) does not pass. The scripting language doesn't have a lot of time related functions, and I can't compare timestamps because I'm allowing users to put like "03:27:2010" and "04:15:2010" as start/end dates in a config file. I'm assuming I am just not thinking straight and missing an easy fix.

  I just asked a question related to how the compiler optimizes certain C++ code, and I was looking around SO for any questions about how to verify that the compiler has performed certain optimizations. I was trying to look at the assembly listing generated with g++ (g++ -c -g -O2 -Wa,-ahl=file.s file.c) to possibly see what is going on under the hood, but the output is too cryptic to me. What techniques do people use to tackle this problem, and are there any good references on how to interpret the assembly listings of optimized code or articles specific to the GCC toolchain that talk about this problem?

• In Vim, what is the best way to select, delete, or comment out large portions of multi-screen text?

  Selecting a large amount of text that extends over many screens in an IDE like Eclipse is fairly easy since you can use the mouse, but what is the best way to e.g. select and delete multiscreen blocks of text or write e.g. three large methods out to another file and then delete them for testing purposes in Vim when using it via putty/ssh where you cannot use the mouse? I can easily yank-to-the-end-of-line or yank-to-the-end-of-code-block but if the text extends over many screens, or has lots of blank lines in it, I feel like my hands are tied in Vim. Any solutions? And a related question: is there a way to somehow select 40 lines, and then comment them all out (with "#" or "//"), as is common in most IDEs?
