• Google won't display site

  My website (markasoftware.getenjoyment.net) doesn't seem to be indexed properly by Google (I haven't tried other search engines). When I type in the URL of my site it appears right at the top of the list like it should. When I type in the entire contents of the title, however, the site doesn't appear! The title is quite long (Thermonuclear War Game Online: Thermonuclear War By Mark) and it has little (if any) competition. Have I been punished by Google for some reason, or is it something else? I have received zero hits from search engines. Can someone tell me why my site down't appear?

• Adsense link units trageting better keywords?

  I have one link unit above my navigation which targets exact keywords on what my site is about, on contrary my adsense for content Leadbord and Wide Skyscraper show ads that are totally opposite from my keyword,while my ctr increased for about 10 times with link unit I noticed cpc is lower also (but that was just based on one day, today is higher). Is it so bad to completly get rid of standard content ads and put link units, because this way I earn so little for that site but I think that is because smart pricing (accidental clicks on ads that my users are not interested)? I earn in whole day with about 25-35 clicks as much as keyword tool shows for only one click,my site is first for the topic? I really don't know what to do.. Has anyone had similar situation or can give some advice?

• Extracting meta tags attribute using wget [migrated]

  I have a file having some URLs per line. I need to extract the "keywords" present in the tags i.e. if there is meta tag for "keywords" then i want to get "content" value for it. Example: if the web-page has this meta-tag then for that URL i want "wikipedia,encyclopedia" to be extracted. One approach is to download the web-page using "wget" and then parse it using some standard HTML parser. I was wondering is there any better way to do this without downloading the entire web-page.

• Trouble with .htacess redirection

  I use this redirect rule to redirect users from www.domain.com/admin to www.domain.com/wp-admin on a Wordpress site. RedirectMatch 301 \@admin http://www.domain.com/wp-admin The problem is that instead redirecting to wp-admin/, it redirects to an article called Administrators are awesome people (slug : administrators-are-awesome-people) I can guess what is going on, WP sees that there is an article slug starting with "admin", and redirects to it, overruling my own rule. Is there a way to be more specific, like saying "redirect urls that end with exactly admin ?

• Ideas to tackle unwanted bad press/review on Google's SERP?

  After Googling our company name to our horror we've found someone on Yelp.co.uk has reviewed our company. On the SERP your eye is immediately drawn to the 2 star review some complete stranger has written, which to be honest is pure slander! The most infuriating thing is the person who reviewed our company has never even been a client/customer. It's a bit like me reviewing a restaurant having never eaten or even been in there! We've sent her a private message on Yelp to remove the review and also sent a complaint to Yelp themselves but have yet to get a reply. We've resisted going mad at the reviewer and also requested that she re-review us having just relaunched our new website (it still riles us that she's not even a client though!). We've had genuine customers/clients review us on Yelp yet this 2 star review remains on Google's SERP. Roughly how long would it take to for our new reviews to over take this review? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can push the review off the 1st page of Google's SERP or any creative ways in which we can tackle this issue?

• Upload ICS (calandar) file to my server

  I want to upload my ICS file to my server, well this is the easy part. What I really want is to be able to share this *.ics file with 2-3 people so they can edit. I have currently uploaded the file on the www/ (root) mydomain.com.au/myfile.ics of my server and added it to my Email/Cal client. Was all looking ok until I tried to save changes. Can someone please direct me to some documentation on how I do this properly. The easy solution would be to upload to google, but I would rather learn how to manage the file myself. Thank you

  Possible Duplicate: Should I use HTML5 and/or CSS3 to build my website? I just want to know if it's considered as a "bad practice" to use things like rounded corners, gradients and so on... I understand that there are bots and crawlers that do not process CSS, but they don't need to. And nowadays most people use browsers that can process CSS3 with no problem. So should I make my buttons and shadows and such look pretty with CSS3 or with images?

On hosting company website finded DNS addresses and applied them to domain hosting website(changed DNS) I done it yesterday, so today it should work, but: Unable to resolve the server's DNS address appears. • SEO for maps-based websites that require user interaction

  I have a website that basically shows a lot of locations worldwide on a Google Maps like interface. The map itself is built using the Leaflet library and Open Street Map tiles. In the map, I show markers at each location I have. There is a popup window when I click on a marker that shows additional information and contains links to "detail" pages for this location. I fetch the location data for the viewpoint from an AJAX call from my server, so the additional information is not available in the HTML page itself. The detail pages are the pages my users are interested in. My normal users load the map, search the location they are interested in, click on a marker and click on a link in the popup window. However for search engines, this might look different. As this navigation pattern relies on user interaction, I think they might not be able to find the details page. My questions: Are search engines able to follow a navigation path like outlined above? How can I improve the navigation for search engines? (For example showing textual links below the map, sitemaps...) How important are internal links for SEO?

• Parse text file on click - and then display

  I am thinking of a methodology for rapid retrieval of code snippets. I imagine an HTML table with a setup like this: one two ... ten one oneTwo() oneTen() two twoOne() twoTen() ... ten tenOne() tenTwo() When a user clicks a function in this HTML table, a snippet of code is shown in another div tag or perhaps a popup window (I'm open to different solutions). I want to maintain only one PHP file named utitlities.php that contains a class called 'util'. This file & class will hold all the functions referenced in the above table (it is also used on various projects and is functional code). A key idea is that I do not want to update the HTML documentation everytime I write/update a new function in utilities.php. I should be able to click a function in the table and have PHP open the utilities file, parse out the apropriate function and display it in an HTML window. Questions: 1) I will be coding this in PHP and JavaScript but am wondering if similar scripts are available (for all or part) so I don't reinvent the wheel. 2) Quick & easy Ajax suggestions appreciated too (probably will use jquery, but am rusty). 3) Methodology for parsing out the functions from the utilities.php file (I'm not to good with regex).

• How can I redirect everything but the index as 410?

  Our site shut down and we need to give a 410 redirect to the users. We have a small one-page replacement site set up in the same domain and a custom 410 error page. We'd like to have it so that all page views are responded with 410 and redirected to the error page, except for the front page, which should point to the new index.html. Here's what in the .htaccess: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f RewriteRule !^index\.html$ index.html [L,R=410] This works, except for one thing: If I type the domain name, I get the 410 page. With www.example.com/index.html I see the index page as I should, but just www.example.com gets 410. How could I fix this?

• Which mobile device is appropriate as a utility tool for a web master?

  Basically, I'm looking for a device to use on the road and I would prefer to not have to sit down for the majority of the tasks (which rules out netbooks, in my mind). I'm also hoping to spend less than $500. This is what I'd like to "capably" be able to do on the device: Browse the web in non-mobile format, flash is a plus Email, chat, etc Have access to a decent text editor and ftp OR a browser that supports BESPIN/ACE Some sort of SSH support I'm looking at rooted Android phones and iPhone/iPads... though the phone aspect is only icing (it would be cool to consolidate the two devices and have net access through cell networks, but I'm not married to the idea). Are there cheap linux tablets that are ready for prime-time yet? I suppose that would be ideal. All suggestions welcome!

• Doing affiliate program with shops who don't have a program already set up

  I am developing an online shop which has managed to agree with other shops to a comission per sale. Now, the problem, is these other shops don't have any kind of affiliate system. So my question is, is there any way we could arrange an easy way for this? They don't plan to develop anything as they are small shops, so... my only guess right now is to control on my site how many times the links to them have been clicked to have an estimate of potential clients, but don't know how they can know that user came through my site and purchased something. • Finding/hiring help with server administration

I know I could learn it and do it myself, but since I am an independent contractor and I know that server administration is the weakest part of my abilities, a DIY approach is going to cost me a lot more time than I can afford.   My domain mydomain.com is registered with godaddy. I wish to host my tumblr blog on this domain with nearlyfreespeech.net hosting. My active nameservers at godaddy already point to my authoritative ones at NFS.net which is working. However i'm baffled of the correct configuration to set to point to my Tumblr. Preferably id like (A) my domain http://mydomain.com to host the blog and have http://www.mydomain.com redirect also to http://mydomain.com If this is too difficult my next preference is (B) to have http://www.mydomain.com host the blog whilst http://mydomain.com redirects to http://www.mydomain.com My 3rd preference is to have (C) a sub-domain like http://tumblr.mydomain.com or http://tumblr.mydomain.com to host the blog and i guess have http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com both redirect to it. I've tried having two aliases mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com pointing to my permanent NFS ip at mydomain.nfshost.com and when i try to add: (1) an A record pointing mydomain.com to the ip 66.6.44.4 as per Tumblr's instructions it tells me i already have the bare domain as an alias so i cant do that. (2) the A record on the www.mydomain.com alias. I can do this with either www.mydomain.com set as an alias or not. But when i tried this with mydomain.com set as the canonical name the result when visiting either mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com was them both continually redirecting to eachother until an error was thrown. So i was wondering if there is a ninja that could save me some hairpulling and tell me the correct way to config A, or else B, or else C.

  Lazyloading images with a noscript fallback. Should I expect any damage in the SERPs? The site is completely thumbnail based. Also should I put a smaller image size in the noscript fallback to increase crawlability? We have nearly 1mil thumbs so it's a decision I'm hesitant to do. The reason why I'm thinking about it in the first place is because we're upping thumbail size about 50% which will add 10% of pagesize.

• Are webhosts that require NS instead of a CNAME common?

  I've just signed up with a webhost (which I prefer not to name) and I'm reasonably happy with it. The only nit was when I was ready to put a site online and I asked the support line to what name I should point my 'www' CNAME to. They responded that they don't do that and I need to set my domain's NS records for the hosting to work. "Why would you ever want to do it that way? Our service to you includes DNS and our servers are probably much better than the one your registrar provides." This was a bit of surprise as all of the other webhosts I've worked with happily support this. I've set up (eg) gallery.myfriend.example for friends by having them configure their DNS to CNAME 'gallery' to the name of a shared server at a webhost and the webhost does name-based hosting for 'gallery.myfriend.example'. (Of course, if the webhost ever tells me I'm being moved from A.webhost.example to B.webhost.example, it would be my responsibility to change where the CNAME points. Really good webhosts would instead create myname.webhost.example for the IP of whichever server my stuff happens to be on, so I'd never have to worry about keeping my CNAME up to date.) Is my impression correct, that most webhosts will happily support a service that begins with a CNAME hosted elsewhere, or is it really more common that webhosts will only provide a service if they control the DNS service too?

• How to fix this navigation issue in my site?

  First off I use webs.com for the creation of my site. I have a very basic layout. List of links of the left and content on the right with a heading up top. Now in my list of links every link is an article that I wrote, I have about 25 links going down the left hand side of my site. Problem is when I try out new themes that support horizontal navigation as opposed to vertical navigation I get either a messy overflow of links Or a link called "more" which lists the rest of the articles in a drop down-list across my site. What I wish I had was a simple horizontal navigation like" "home, about, articles" and when the user clicks on articles it would then bring them to a page containing all my articles there. I would prefer it to be in a table like display. That way is not a long list. Anyways any ideas on how I can fix this issue im having? Please let me know if you need more information.

How can we clean hacker links and leave only useful links to our prouct pages? We already checked the Google URL Removal Tool but within the 'Removal Type' options we can specify there is nothing meaningful to specify in this case. Shall we proceed the same? Thanks.

• Usual Suspects: Typical 3rd Party Entities in E-Commerce [closed]

  I am doing some requirements/analysis for a web app that I'd like to build (Ruby/Java developer here). This web app would have a store front, shopping cart and would need to be totally compliant with all e-com best practices. It's amazing how much non-technical info comes up when you search for phrases like "how does e-commerce work", but very little comes up in the way of technical details. As such, I'm having extreme frustration finding answers to what I consider pretty straight-forward questions. I came here because I believe this question is not off-topic; if it is, please leave a comment as to why this question does not belong here and I will happily remove it myself (upvotes if your comment can point me to the correct place for this question!). So then: What 3rd parties will I need to work with to have a modern, web-compliant e-com site? So far I can account for a payment gateway provider like Authorize.net and an SSL certificate provider like Trustwave. Any others? What other standards besides PCI compliance will I be held to (besides governing laws, of course!)? Vulnerability scans: PCI compliance requires quarterly scans: if I'm a "Level 4" (low volume) Merchant does that still apply to me? Irregardless, my backend architecture is quite huge, with web servers, app servers, database, message brokers and more. Do each of these servers need to be scanned?!? If not what servers do need to get these quarterly scans? I usually hate to ask micro-questions inside of one large one, but these are so closely-related I just felt like asking them all separately would be spamming the site with too many petty questions. • Google Analytics Visitors drop-off for certain region of site only

  I have an issue with the tracking on my site where I have seen a dramatic drop off of visitors to the site from a certain region. I have four regions on my site at the moment, these are UK, EU, US and RoW (Rest of the World). The UK, EU and US regions are unaffected, only the RoW region suffers this drop-off. I have included a screen shot below from my GA account, which shows this effect. My GA code, which is included on every page on the site is below. I have changed the UA account number intentionally for this example. There have been no changes made to the GA account or the tracking code in a live environment for some considerable time, but for some reason I am seeing the drop-off for this region only.
