• I can't upgrade my windows 8 enterprise to windows 8.1 Enteprise preview

  My PC is running Windows 8 Enterprise X64 (French). I'm trying to upgrade to 8.1 preview, so I downloaded the 64 bits ISO of Windows 8.1 preview (french):fr_windows_8.1_preview_x64_dvd_2358804.iso My I start the setup from the media, the setup does not propose me to upgrade and keep my applications. Only Keep personal files only and Keep nothing are available. When I read the technet page Supported Upgrade Path, upgrading and keeping everything should be proposed. Why can't I upgrade? Do I missed something?

• Home movie video browser

  I have a bunch of home movies that don't have useful filenames because they came straight off the camera. (I'm using Vista 64, by the way.) Picasa is pretty good for browsing through them and watching them, but it doesn't use my video card for rendering the videos. My CPU gets pegged at max usage, and full screen barely works. Windows Media Player or Quicktime works fine. Is there another application (like Picasa) that can be used for browsing through movies that both uses my video card and shows thumbnails of all the movies in my collection? I'd rather have something nicer than Windows Explorer. (The movies are h.264 AAC 1280x720.)

• How could I portably split large backup files over multiple discs?

  Context: I make backups / archives, primarily of photos. I'm experimenting with Bup, which is designed for backup to hard disk. Basically it creates Git repos which include packfiles of up to 1GB. But I still need last-ditch backups to keep offline and move offsite (and keeping them on read-only media is good too!). What are the options for archiving and splitting large files over several discs like CDs (and reading them back!)? I'd prefer methods which will stay readable in future. are portable e.g. to Windows. have known simple implementations, so I could re-implement them myself if necessary. (Using Bup packs will stretch my robustness budget. So I want to be confident about how other parts of the system would behave). I heard split archives are possible with both ZIP and 7-Zip. Is that right?

• Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past. • Painless way of consolidating files across multiple machines/OSes

  Just bought a NAS. So I thought I'd get all our photos, media files and pdfs consolidated, de-duplicated, de-junked and virus-checked and stick them all on it. We have 3 laptops, one running Windows, the others OSX. We have a file server running Windows - it was the result of an earlier attempt at a networked fileserver - and a Mac Pro that is also kind of a server (previous attempts at this job have resulted in most of our stuff being on it). Also memory cards/sticks, cd backups and so on. I would be grateful if anyone could suggest a strategy or, ideally, tool(s) I could use to solve this problem. It is probably no more than one or two terabytes of data in total, but I can imagine that going through it all manually, file-by-file may well drive me insane.

• Automatically reboot Windows8 if no internet activity [migrated]

  I have a media server located in a very inconvenient part of my house. Occasionally I will have to reset my router or it will reset itself. The issue is the PC loses connectivity for some reason, and I am forced to walk outside, around the house, into the basement, over a bunch of toys and weights and boxes, to push a button to reboot it. I would love to have it check itself every 5-10 minutes and auto reboot if it is unable to ping a given address/IP. Any ideas how to accomplish this?

• Convert SWF/FLA back to PDF [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I convert SWF into a PDF? I have a number of graphics and text only SWF and FLA files that I'd like to convert to PDF preserving the text and formatting. Printing to PDF from Flash Player seems to flatten everything into an image without preserving the text. I've got a large number of those files, so it would be quite nice to have a automatable/console utility to do the job. Appreciate any help or pointers. Thanks! EDIT: It seems like most SWF files were created with pdf2swf, so I'm hoping there is a similar tool for doing a reverse conversion.

I remember I should select windows mixer to record it, but currently I hear nothin with audacity. Why? Windows is Windows 8.   Is there any free (as in beer, and if it's possible as in bird) tool to convert a dvd in the format DVC-PRO HD 1080 to a normal/standard dvd format so that I can play it on a normal DVD player? EDIT: I changed the wording a bit. We've a video in DVC-PRO HD 1080 but as far as I know it is a proprietary format. We'd like to create a standard dvd out of it. I'm not really in video encoding and dvd conversion. I thought I need to be more precise. VLC currently doesn't support DVC-PRO HD 1080.

  I have a problem where any program is started under Windows Vista, the following error message is generated Bad Image C;\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~3\GOEC62~1.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support. This happens for every program started, including those that start automatically at boot time. My Google-fu is failing to solve this for me. I have already tried an "sfc /scannow" which did find some problems, but it said that it could not correct them. What might cause this problem? How might it be resolved?

• Video codec that can be read on clean installs of either Windows, OS X and Ubuntu

  I have to make a video that will need to be watched on different operating systems. Is there a "universal" video codec that can be played on Windows, OS X and Linux without requiring additional plugins or player other than those that comes on a default clean install of each of those systems? Compression is not an issue, I'm merely looking for compatibility (e.g. for audio, I would use WAV as a universal codec). Note : I must assume that the video will be distributed in countries where software patents are enforced, and therefore can't rely on the user to install non-free codecs on Linux. Thanks.

  I run an Ubuntu box as a media server, which I use to either share files (copy and paste off of the network drive), or stream to my computer (which runs Win7), or to my xbox. I have a lot of files on there, especially music. Currently when I'm searching for a file, I just use Windows' search, which can be quite slow. I was wondering if there were better ways to search from my Windows box? I'd prefer not to SSH in to the box and use find or something like that. Is there any way to speed up Windows' search? Or an easy alternative? Thanks!

  I currently have a FreeBSD 8.2 media server set up on my LAN that I use to stream my music from. I also have an SSH login that I use to do file transfers to and from this server remotely. I would like to set up ALTQ (and have gotten this working) to limit my outgoing bandwidth from the server for SSH traffic. However, configuring ALTQ this way is also limiting my internal traffic (and thus interfering with my music streaming) since I am only using a single network interface. • Force Windows to output only mono sound

  So, the 'right' half of my pair of headphones broke (the transducer+wire are fine, but the earpiece broke on the headband and so the earpiece won't sit over my ear). So now the right channel is being broadcast to my cube neighbors when I wear my headphones. Yes, they look very silly. Is there a way to ensure, in Windows XP (or Windows Media Player), that all stereo sound is downmixed to the left channel only (ie, in mono) so my neighbors don't hear my music? I know that I can setup the mixer to set the balance to 100% left, but information in the right channel won't be heard.

  Hello, I'm planing to build a little linux homeserver. It will mainly be used for storage and maybe as an media pc. I plan to build a software raid5 with 4 1.5TB or 2TB hard drives. I already decided to use the Western Digital Caviar Green 1.5 TB drive, but then I read about some problems with the WD green series about many drives failing and that they are not recommended for raid anyway. Of course, I couldn't find much facts on the issues so I thought I just ask here ;-) What hard drives would you recommended for a software raid5 setup? As I only need it for storage, the whole thing doesn't have to be too fast. So I prefer a cheap price and silence to great performance.

• Testing a Virtualisation of a Debian Server (vmWare vSphere probably)

  I'm soon getting access to a powerful root-server (quad-core, 16gb ram, 1gbit connection) where gameservers (like minecraft,counterstrike etc.) for different customers should be setup. My plan is to use programs such as vmWare vSphere to create some virtual machines for each customer. Inside such a virtual machine I'll setup the gameserver and maybe some kind of ftp server when its needed. Now that I'm kinda new to virtualisation of servers I want to test this local on my Desktop Computer. Is it possible to create a virtual machine of debian using vmWare Player on my Windows desktop computer and then install vmware vSphere in this VM to create multiple VM's inside that VM ? Or do I really need to install Debian on my desktop computer. (I want to use the time during installations etc. to work a bit at my windows installation) Some tips on virtualising debian servers are also appreciated :)

• Bad HD video deinterlacing processing

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit with Unity. My system configuration is: CPU: Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4 GHz) RAM: 8192 Mb DDR2 Kingston Video: Palit GeForce GTX 260 216 SP, and my screen resolution is 1680x1050. I also have Window 7 Ulitimate installed, and I can see the same files in Media Player Classic without any horizontal lines. I've installed vdpau driver, NVIDIA drivers 304.51, and MPlayer 2 (within SMPlayer). I've disabled "Sync to VBlank" option in CCSM (because in other way, by default, MPlayer process use about 50-60 percents of my processor load), tried to swich between different deinterlace options in SMPlayer, used "-vc ffh264vdpau,ffmpeg12vdpau" (without quotes) parameters for MPlayer, switched to "Ubuntu 2D", but, finally, have no results. Any suggestions? How must I to set up MPlayer?

  I'm dual booting Windows 7/Ubuntu 12.04. I want to run C++/Java projects from a NTFS partition, where I keep generally all my files and projects. I fiddled with the fstab. One time I removed 'noexec', the other I changed it to 'exec'. After that,each time, I remounted the partition and it still didn't work. I tried using sudo mount -o remount,exec /media/mypartition It didn't work either. There was a somewhat similar question already, but it didn't have the proper answer for me or I didn't know how to make it work(note: I am a total newbie with Ubuntu and Linux in general).

• Wrong chrome full screen resolution with multiple displays

  I am using Google Chrome on Windows 7 64bit with two displays. The displays have different resolutions and aspect-ratios. My problem is best visible when playing back full-screen videos from a flash player inside chrome (but it is not flash related). The maximum size is calculated from the primary displays' resolution, even when the relevant window is maximised on the second screen. The problem is also visible on websites that set the width to 100%. The 100% then apply to the primary display, even when the window is opened on the secondary display. Are there any known solutions to this problem? I am observing it since many Chrome versions, do not know if it has been ever correct.

  I tried installing MediaPortal on my old system. I installed & tried both beta & stable releases: Here's the old system specs: Windows XP SP3 512MB DDR 80GB IDE K-World PVR-TV7131 Analog TV-Tuner Inno3d FX5500 128MB 64bit When scanning through the TV-Server, it crashes. I don't know if the incompatibility comes from the hardware or the OS, but my TV Tuner's own Media center app works well. For now, that's what im using. Anyone here familiar with MediaPortal?   Programtically get the Wireless lan config of a machine and use netsh to setup new profile I am having trouble getting the netsh command to set the ssid of a new card. I installed the drivers and plugged it in. I see in ipconfig it says the "media is disconnected" (fair enough). I then send the following command netsh wlan connect name=profile1 ssid=myNetwork interface="Wireless Network Connection 2" problem is I get an error "There is no profile "profile1" assigned to the specified interface. What is a profile for a wireless card? What should I set it to? How Can I get my SSID set and connected for the card.

No Firefox or DVD player because I will be distracted. I want to have various modes (one for writing a paper, another for doing taxes) that will prevent me from using any program except for the ones I need to perform a task. Now Windows 7 has this behavior disabled by default and I do not know how to configure it.   I am planning on writing a small browser game. The webserver is a shared server, with no root / install possible. I want to use AJAX for client/server communication. There will be 12 players. So each player would be polling the server for the current game status every X milliseconds (let's say 200ms). So that would be 200ms x 12 players x 5 = 60 requests per second Can Apache handle those requests? What might be the bottlenecks when using this attempt?

• Protected flash video (requires HAL) on Gentoo

  I am unable to play "protected" flash video, such as Amazon Prime Instant Video. From what I've read and uncovered, this seems to be due to a lack of HAL being installed on my computer. Confirmation that it is required for protected video can be seen towards the beginning of http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/flash-player-11-problems-playing.html However, hal is not in the gentoo portage tree, and in any case has been deprecated and replaced by udev. How can I go about getting Amazon Prime Instant Video to work again? I was considering grabbing the source from http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/hal but the links there won't load, and trying to install it from old ebuilds or from overlays which claim to still support it (e.g. kde-sunset) result in a compilation error: In file included from addon-generic-backlight.c:38:0: /usr/include/glib-2.0/glib/gmain.h:21:2: error: #error "Only <glib.h> can be included directly." Has anyone else solved this issue?
