• How to make a disk image and restore from it later?

  I'm a new Linux user. I've reinstalled my Wubi from scratch at least ten times the last few weeks because while getting the system up and running (drivers, resolution, etc.) I've broken something (X, grub, unknowns) and I can't get it back to work. Especially for a newbie like me, it's easier (and much faster) to just reinstall the whole shebang than try to troubleshoot several layers of failed "fixing" attempts. Coming from Windows, I expect that there is some "disk image" utility that I can run to make a snapshot of my Linux install (and of the boot partition!!) before I meddle with stuff. Then, after I've foobar'ed my machine, I would somehow restore my machine back to that working snapshot. What's the Linux equivalent of Windows disk imagers like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost? • RenderTarget2D behavior in XNA

  I've been dabbling with XNA for a couple of days now. This chunk of code doesn't work as I expect. The goal is to render sprites individually and composite them on another rendertarget. P = RenderTarget2D(with RenderTargetUsage.PreserveContents) D = RenderTarget2D(with RenderTargetUsage.DiscardContents) for all sprites: graphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(D); <draw sprite i> graphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(P); <Draw D> graphicsDevice.SetRenderTarget(null); <Draw P> The result I get is - only the last sprite is visible. • C# XNA - Sky Sphere Question

  I have been banging my head against the wall trying to get a sky sphere to work appropriately in XNA 4.0. I have the sphere loading correctly, and even textured, but i would like something a little more dynamic that can support a day/night cycle. My issue is that, while i know a good amount of C# and XNA, i know next to nothing about HLSL. (I could make an ambient light shader if my life depended on it...) I also have not been able to find a tutorial on how to build a sky sphere like this. Of course i don't expect to be able to make an amazing one right off the bat, i would like to start small, with a dynamic coloring sky i'll work out the clouds and sun later. My first question: Does anyone know of any good tutorial sites that could help me get a decent grasp around HLSL? Second: Does anyone have a good example of or know where to find one of a gradient sky using XNA and C#?

• In retrospect, has it been a good idea to use three-valued logic for SQL NULL comparisons?

  In SQL, NULL means "unknown value". Thus, every comparison with NULL yields NULL (unknown) rather than TRUE or FALSE. From a conceptional point of view, this three-valued logic makes sense. From a practical point of view, every learner of SQL has, one time or another, made the classic WHERE myField = NULL mistake or learned the hard way that NOT IN does not do what one would expect when NULL values are present. It is my impression (please correct me if I am wrong) that the cases where this three-valued logic helps (e.g. WHERE myField IS NOT NULL AND myField <> 2 can be shortened to WHERE myField <> 2) are rare and, in those cases, people tend to use the longer version anyway for clarity, just like you would add a comment when using a clever, non-obvious hack. Is there some obvious advantage that I am missing? Or is there a general consensus among the development community that this has been a mistake?

• How to check the information of current installed video drivers on Ubuntu?

  Hi guys, I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04. My CPU usage is high when I do trivial things such as scrolling through a PDF file. So I think my video driver is not properly installed. I want to confirm that by checking the information of my currently installed video driver, such as if there's a driver installed and what version it is. Then I could decide whether to install a new one if it is not up to date. On Windows, I could use the device manager, how to do that on Ubuntu Linux? I don't expect a GUI solution for this. Command line will be just good enough. Many thanks.

• What should I use (controls, methods) to make a 2D tile based map editor?

  I'm making a 2d game where each tile is a square and it's viewed at straight angle, no skewing, no rotation, it's pretty simple. Two weeks ago I tried using DataGridView, but as the number of rows and columns increased, it became frustratingly slow, then I read how it should've happened to me earlier, because this control is not supposed to work with large number of cells, and I have at least 7500 cells in my smallest level, which made it unbearable to use. This is what I expect from my new editor: Most importantly, tile type. Tile images or their color codes are fine (seeing map as it is in-game is cool, but the faster, the better). Secondly, all tile parameters (in text, preferrably editable in a popup or sidebar). I'm using my own format, so I'm most probably not going to use third party product. Besides, I'm trying to learn how to do it myself.

I occasionally have methods that I think of as friend methods. This can lead to confusion and the development time may be wasted by making corrections of this type. Shouldn't PHP, or any language for that matter, consider making the signatures of related functions consistent?

• Performance cost of running Ubuntu from external hard drive

  A friend just complained to me about Ubuntu being slow. Although I've noticed a certain lack of snappiness with Linux vs Windows in the past, I really can't say I've had much to grumble about with the recent distributions of Ubuntu. That said, his objections seem much worse than the ones I used to have and I know that his current setup is significantly more powerful than my laptop. And then it turned out he is running Ubuntu off an external HDD hooked up via USB2.0. The HD enclosure is USB3.0 but apparently he can't manage to get it to boot on USB3.0 so he switched to one of the USB2.0 ports or whatever and that works, albeit not very well. Now I would expect USB to add some overhead to communication between the computer and the HDD; SATA is after all designed to get the maximum out of a hard drive, whereas USB is, well, universal. What are your expreriences with booting off external HDDs? Edit: Does anybody know just how much of a slowdown can be expected?

• U1 music mp3 files not put into albums

  Via the web page I can see that my files sync to U1 cloud servers. For the mp3 files, there seems to be a problem that several questions have already addressed but there does not seem to be a clear answer. If I use EasyTAG 2.1.6, I can see the ID3 tags on the local files and they seem to correctly define the artist, album title and track name. I expect it is not relevant, but I am using 10.04 with several different clients to rip the CDs. However, some mp3 files do not appear in the cloud at all and some others get assigned to Various Artist or Unknown artist. Does the music streaming (e.g. via Ipad) use the tags or the directory/file structure to assign the artist or album, and how quickly should it be expected to work? :-) Which version of ID3 tags does U1 music streaming work best with or prefer? thanks for any help David

• Where to find clients?

  My main area: web development. Of course, I don't expect anybody give away their 'gold mine' or whatever but I am struggling to see where I should be advertising my services. I have one other developer I work with and we have a lot of happy clients - on freelance websites. Thing is, freelance websites just seem to suck the life out of you when you're being out-bidded by ridiculous rates. • How to read BC4 texture in GLSL?

  I'm supposed to receive a texture in BC4 format. In OpenGL, i guess this format is called GL_COMPRESSED_RED_RGTC1. The texture is not really a "texture", more like a data to handle at fragment shader. Usually, to get colors from a texture within a fragment shader, i do : uniform sampler2D TextureUnit; void main() { vec4 TexColor = texture2D(TextureUnit, vec2(gl_TexCoord[0])); (...) the result of which is obviously a v4, for RGBA. But now, i'm supposed to receive a single float from the read. I'm struggling to understand how this is achieved. Should i still use a texture sampler, and expect the value to be in a specific position (for example, within TexColor.r ?), or should i use something else ?

• Mirroring Ubuntu on several systems in a computer lab

  I am working in a new refugee school where the only Internet service available is a slow satellite connection. We are about to set up a computer lab (already have desktop systems and am about to install Ubuntu on them). I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux, but it seems a better alternative than pirated copies of Windows. I'd like to set up one Ubuntu system, and then mirror that system on perhaps ten to twenty other systems (all of which would be on an ethernet network). I expect to have an internet connection on the one system that I set up, but then it may be difficult to have enough bandwidth to go through all the same steps on the other ten systems. Can I set up the other ten or twenty computers to get all of their updates/upgrades/configuration from one master system? Can I also set things up so that students cannot change the configuration, install new programs, etc.? Appreciate any help you can give. -- Harvey

• Box2D Platform body not moving player body along with it

  I am creating a game using Box2D (Javascript implementation) - and I added the ability to have a static platform, that is moved along an axis as a function of a sine. My problem is when the player lands on the platform, as the platform moves along the X axis - the player is not moved along with it, as you visually would expect. The player can land on the object, and if it hits the side of the object, it does colide with it and is pushed. • How to make rigid bodies collide with Apex Clothing in PhysX for Maya

  According to the [Apex] Clothing Overview section of the documentation: Colliding with Rigid Bodies Rigid bodies present in your scene will push clothing around roughly as you might expect. Well, I beg to differ. The Apex Cloth collides with the floor just fine, but that's about the only thing it collides with (unless I add ragdoll to the same skeleton that the cloth is attached to.) So for example, if I try to bounce a ball (dynamic rigid body) into the cloth, it simply bounces through it. If I try to walk an actor with ragdoll through it, he simply clips through it as well. Anyone have any insight on this?
