• Is object clearing/array deallocation really necessary in VB6/VBA (Pros/Cons?)

  Hello, A lot of what I have learned about VB I learned from using Static Code Analysis (Particularly Aivosto's Project Analyzer). And one one of things it checks for is whether or not you cleared all objects and arrays. I used to just do this blindly because PA said so. But now that I know a little bit more about the way VB releases resources, it seems to me that these things should be happening automatically. Is this a legacy feature from pre VB6, or is there a reason why you should explicitly set objects back to nothing and use Erase on arrays?

• Database that accesses a website.?

  Hi Guys What application should I use that is able to automatically access a website to gather information? Basically I have a database that completes calculations for me; however I have to manually gather the parameters from a website and input these into my database. What I would like is have an application that will take my input say the name of a product, access the website, add this name into a search box on a website, complete the search and then extract the desired information from the web page returning the results to my application to complete the calculation thus presenting me with the result. This is a little out of my depth but I’m willing to learn no matter how complicated the software. Cheers for your help.

• C#, Manage concurrency in database access

  Hi there, I have written a while ago an application used by multiple users to handle trades creation. I haven't done development for some time now and can't remember how I managed the concurrency between the users and so would have liked your advices in term of design. The application was as follow: - One heavy client per user - A single database - Access to the database for each user to insert/update/delete trades - A grid in the application reflecting the trades table. That grid being updated each time someone changes a deal. My questions: 1- Do you confirm I shouldn't care about the connection to the database for each application. Considering that there is a singleton in each, I would expect on connexion per client with no issue. 2- How preventing the concurrency of the accesses? I guess I should lock when modifying the data, however don't remember how to. 3- How to have the grid automatically updated whenever the database is (by another user for example)? • Persisting Serializable Objects in Hibernate

  I am attempting to persist objects that contain some large Serializable types. I want Hibernate to automatically generate my DDL (using Hibernate annotations). For the most part, this works, but the default database column type used by Hibernate when persisting these types is tinyblob. Unfortunately, this causes crashes when attempting to persist my class, because these types will not fit within the length of tinyblob. However, if I manually set the type (using @Column(columnDefinition="longblob")), it works fine. Is there any way to make the default binary type longblob instead of tinyblob, so that I don't need to manually specify the @Column annotation on each field?

• Command line does not execute my parameters

  I have created a batch file to run an application automatically but it seems my CMD does not run it. I typed this (using notepad as an example): CMD /C "C:\notepad2\notepad2.exe" If I run this from Windows Vista it worked. But running this from Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) it just doesn't work. I even try using that line from the Run menu but no go. What do I do? My aim is to run a scheduled task that runs the batch file every now and then.

• How do I sync two local file structures.

  Hi, I have two large source trees. One of them has some out of date image files. I would like to automatically update all the old image files (png, jpg, gif) in one source tree with the up to date image files in the other source tree. I am using Windows 7 but I have Cygwin installed. I have tried using rsync so far but with no success. I was hoping I could do something like: rsync -r *.png newSourceTree oldSourceTree Any help would be much appreciated.

• CString a = "Hello " + "World!"; Is it possible?

  I'm making my own string class and I was wondering if there's any way to replace the compiler behaviour around " characters. As I said in the title I'd like to make it so that CString a = "Hello " + "World!"; would actually work and not give a compiler error telling that it can't add 2 pointers. My string class automatically converts to char* when needed and thus writing printf(a) would not break the code. I'm sure this is a rather weird question but if it's possible I'd really like to know how to do it. Thank you very much

• Portrait vs Landscape Launch Images

  An iPad app can support inclusion of launch images in both orientations; presumably, if your app supports auto-rotation, then this would suggest to me that if the user launches an app while the device is in Landscape mode, then the Landscape launch image is used. But in all the apps I've built and released, this has never been the case. Never once has the Landscape launch image appeared, only the Portrait. After loading, the app will auto-rotate to whatever orientation the device is in, but at launch, it assumes you are in Portrait. Always. Why? I have seen many other apps in the store that behave this way, but then there are some seem to always automatically know immediately at first launch, from that first launch image, that you are in Landscape, if that's the case. How is this done?

• How to nightly update a copy folder of main website?

  I have a main website, then I have a backup of the main site in another folder on the server to be used if main site goes down I can push traffic to my copy of the main site. With that said I want to nightly update the copy site with the updated files made to the main site from the prior day's updates to text files and new images. What is best method of doing this automatically every 24 hours? I assume a cron script could be created for this need? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I am using a vpn service from certain server. I was given with a root account, and when I connect with a root account, the command line looks like below. root@xa9g82:/etc/# Then I used useradd to add an account called 'temp' When I connected to the server with temp, then the command line only has a single character. $ The user information is not shown, neither the path. Also, note that, in root's command line I can use tab to automatically complete the filename, however 'temp's command line inserts tab space, when I press tab. It is very inconvenient. I am using Ubuntu 10.04. How can I resolve this issue?

  Looking for a (jQuery) video/image gallery to implement on my website, I've found many freely available option. However, I need one that, when in "autoplay" mode and gets to a video file, automatically plays an entire file, and only then moves on to the next image/video. Similar to what Picasaweb are doing when you ask to autoplay an online gallery of your images/videos. I have found, for example, this plugin: http://www.yoxigen.com/yoxview/. Notice that images 6 & 8 are actually video feeds, but when in autoplay mode, are treated just like any other image, i.e. - displayed for a few seconds then moves on to the next file... not what I need. • Why does var evaluate to System.Object in "foreach (var row in table.Rows)"?

  When I enter this foreach statement... foreach (var row in table.Rows) ...the tooltip for var says class System.Object I'm confused why it's not class System.Data.DataRow. (In case you're wondering, yes, I have using System.Data at the top of my code file.) If I declare the type explicitly, as in... foreach (DataRow row in table.Rows) ...it works fine with no errors. Also if I do... var numbers = new int[] { 1, 2, 3 }; foreach (var number in numbers) ...var evaluates to struct System.Int32. So, the problem is not that var doesn't work in a foreach clause. So, there's something strange about DataRowCollection where the items don't automatically evaluate to DataRow. But I can't figure out what it is. Does anyone have an explanation?

  Hi, I have a header file with a few common constants like names and stuff that are automatically included in each project (an example follows). The thing is that they are included in the compiled binary (EXE) whether they are used (referenced) or not. If I use DEFINEs instead, then naturally they are not included if they are not used, but of course consts are better than defines so… I tried Googling it, but the closest thing I could find was a question right here on SO that did not quite help. Matters of i18n aside, how can I keep the ones that are not used out of the binary, while still keeping it easy to use like this? • Auto refresh of page in Rails 3 using javascript

  I have a view in my rails app: blah.app/units/status This displays a status of all my units. I'd like to have the page automatically refresh via javascript but I'm not sure how to do it. • jQuery passing an array to an AJAX call

  I have an array: myarr = []; I'm filling it with some values: myarray['name'] = "Me!"; Now I want to transform that array into a set of Key = Value pairs. I though jQuery would do it automatically, but it doesn't seem to. $.ajax ({ type: "POST", dataType: "text", url: "myurl", data: myarr }); Is there a way to do this or something I'm doing wrong? I get no javascript errors, and no serverside errors other then no POST information at all.

• Is vim able to detect the natural language of a file, then load the correct dictionary ?

  I am using several languages, and currently I am obliged to indicate to vim with which of these the spell check must be done. Is there a way to set up vim so that it automatically detects the correct one? I vaguely remember that in a previous version of vim, when the spell check was not integrated, the vimspell script made this possible. It would be even better if this could apply not only to a file but also to a portion of a file, since I frequently mix several languages in a single file. Of course, I would like to avoid to load several dictionaries simultaneously.

• Are there any good Javascript/Jquery thumbnail script equivalents to TimThimb (PHP)?

  For those unaware of TimThumb, it will take any image, of any size or dimension and create a thumbnail on the fly to any desired size. The beauty of it is that it really works on any dimension you feed it through a combination of either resizing the image, cropping or zoom cropping the image. Ive been searching for jscript equvalents but they either require the user to actually mask out the thumbs manually (looking for a script that automatically does it to images) or the scripts can't handle images in a different aspect ratio. Thanks for any leads on this!

  I received a SSL cert to use for a Tomcat 6.0 server, ready to use. I configured Tomcat to use it with the following in server.xml: <Connector port="8443" maxThreads="200" scheme="https" secure="true" SSLEnabled="true" keystoreFile="C:\Tomcat 6.0\ssl\cert" keystorePass="*****" clientAuth="false" sslProtocol="TLS"/> I started Tomcat using the command prompt so I could see any error message as they happened. There were none. The results for accessing different URLS: http://localhost - normal page loads fine https://localhost - browser claims page cannot be found https://localhost:8443 - page cannot be found http://localhost:8443 - offers a certificate, after accepted redirects to https://localhost (I suspect the https:// urls initially offer the certificate which is automatically accepted by the browser, as it was issued by Verisign) How to fix? Edit: I've also tried port="443". Same result.

• memcpy does not copy the data

  I am caught up with a weird problem. I have one build that copies data using memcpy, while another build does not. I don't understand why, because the relevant file is still the same. I am using following code: memcpy(pxCurrentInfo, &pxInfoBuffer->axgInfoBuffer[0], sizeof(tInfo)); Data in pxInfoBuffer is fine. When I check pxCurrentInfo they are all 0s. tInfo is a structure. To give a pointer, when I put the break point and change the value pxCurrentInfo->xDL.eMethod=0 it automatically updates/copies all the correct info from pxInfoBuffer->axgInfoBuffer[0], afterwards. I don't know why.

  Is it in any way possible to launch an activity from the main function without having a UI? i.e. is there a way to create a sort of "wrapper" around another activity, i.e. by launching the main activity, it takes you to another activity automatically. If that is not possible, is there a way to remove the main activity from the stack so that clicking the back button does not take you to a blank UI?   I'm importing a CSV file with dotted german dates into a MySQL database. I want the dates in the CSV to automatically be formatted correctly to the correct data type fields used by MySQL. I'm using Sequel Pro for the import. I gather I'm supposed to use the STR_TO_DATE function, but I just can't wrap my head around how to use add value or expression. • Is it possible to append html code in parts via JQuery?

  I am trying to append li elements coming from a php file with JQuery. Problem is that the html code needs to be seperately appended to different html IDs according to the key value. Unfortunately as I understood append() can only append correct html with all elements closed. Otherwise it will automatically close the tags. The following code will NOT work as dval contains code like <div><li class="some">Some value</li> and append() will make <div><li class="some">Some value</li></div> out of it. • PHP - login to a remote server, trough my own server, with HTTPS, cookies and proxy, and downloading the html

  Hello, so what i am trying to do is this: login to the other server with a PHP on my own server (either with my username and pass/or with my cookies) then have access to the page i want to display/download i want to write a PHP script that is located on my own server, that automatically does a login to another server, that uses HTTPS and a web form for login. after the login i have access to that page that i am trying to download. i dont know if it would be possible to login and download the html only with the cookies that i have in my browser through a previous login, or if i need to do the login in my php script through some https login method. can i do any of this with curl or fsocksopen or what would be the best way to realize this? thanks in advance!
