  • Supporting Piping (A Useful Hello World)

    - by blastthisinferno
    I am trying to write a collection of simple C++ programs that follow the basic Unix philosophy by: Make each program do one thing well. Expect the output of every program to become the input to another, as yet unknown, program. I'm having an issue trying to get the output of one to be the input of the other, and getting the output of one be the input of a separate instance of itself. Very briefly, I have a program add which takes arguments and spits out the summation. I want to be able to pipe the output to another add instance. ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 That should yield 6 but currently yields 10. I've encountered two problems: The cin waits for user input from the console. I don't want this, and haven't been able to find a simple example showing a the use of standard input stream without querying the user in the console. If someone knows of an example please let me know. I can't figure out how to use standard input while supporting piping. Currently, it appears it does not work. If I issue the command ./add 1 2 | ./add 3 4 it results in 7. The relevant code is below: add.cpp snippet // ... COMMAND LINE PROCESSING ... std::vector<double> numbers = multi.getValue(); // using TCLAP for command line parsing if (numbers.size() > 0) { double sum = numbers[0]; double arg; for (int i=1; i < numbers.size(); i++) { arg = numbers[i]; sum += arg; } std::cout << sum << std::endl; } else { double input; // right now this is test code while I try and get standard input streaming working as expected while (std::cin) { std::cin >> input; std::cout << input << std::endl; } } // ... MORE IRRELEVANT CODE ... So, I guess my question(s) is does anyone see what is incorrect with this code in order to support piping standard input? Are there some well known (or hidden) resources that explain clearly how to implement an example application supporting the basic Unix philosophy? @Chris Lutz I've changed the code to what's below. The problem where cin still waits for user input on the console, and doesn't just take from the standard input passed from the pipe. Am I missing something trivial for handling this? I haven't tried Greg Hewgill's answer yet, but don't see how that would help since the issue is still with cin. // ... COMMAND LINE PROCESSING ... std::vector<double> numbers = multi.getValue(); // using TCLAP for command line parsing double sum = numbers[0]; double arg; for (int i=1; i < numbers.size(); i++) { arg = numbers[i]; sum += arg; } // right now this is test code while I try and get standard input streaming working as expected while (std::cin) { std::cin >> arg; std::cout << arg << std::endl; } std::cout << sum << std::endl; // ... MORE IRRELEVANT CODE ...

  • How to change this C++ code to make input work better

    - by Phenom
    cout << "Input street number: "; cin >> streetnum; cout << "Input street name: "; cin >> streetname; cout << "Input resource name: "; cin >> rName; cout << "Input architectural style: "; cin >> aStyle; cout << "Input year built: "; cin >> year; The problem with the above code happens if you enter in spaces between words. For example if I enter "Ampitheater Parkway" for streetname, then it puts "Ampitheater" in streetname, skips the prompt for resource name and enters "Parkway" into the next field. How can I fix this?

  • c++ setting string attribute value in class is throwing "Access violation reading location"

    - by user259789
    I am having some trouble getting this simple code to work: class CreateUserView { public: CreateUserView(void); ~CreateUserView(void); UserController* controller; void showView(); string name; string lastname; string address; string email; string dateOfBirth; }; All i need is to set these attributes in the implementation with getline(). CreateUserView::CreateUserView(void) { } void CreateUserView::showView() { cout << endl << " New User" << endl; cout << "--------------------------" << endl; cout << " Name\t\t: "; getline(cin, name); cout << " Lastname\t: "; getline(cin, lastname); cout << " Email\t\t: "; getline(cin, email); cout << " ===============================" << endl; cout << " 1. SAVE 2.CHANGE 3.CANCEL" << endl; cout << " ===============================" << endl; cout << " choice: "; int choice; cin >> choice; cin.ignore(); controller->createUser_choice(choice); } I keep getting this "Access violation reading location" error at this line: getline(cin, name); what's the best way of assigning a value to an std::string attribute of a class? even name = "whatever" is throwing that error!! thanks

  • error_expected_primary expression before in. In functions

    - by user2975402
    Here is my code. I try to fix it and I always obtain the same error: expected primary expression before 'int'. in line 47, 55, 63, 80, 86. And I've already tried this program in small pieces before and it works. It doesn't marked that error. ` #include using namespace std; int add (int a, int b) { int r; r=a+b; return (r); } int ssub (int a, int b) { int r; r=a-b; return (r); } int mult(int a, int b) { int r; r=a*b; return (r); } int menu(int a, int b){ int r; char x; cout <<"What do you want to do: \na.Adding \n s. Substract \n m. Multiply. \n. e. Exit"<<endl; cin>>x; switch (x){ case 'a': cout << "Give a value for a"<<endl; cin>>a; cout <<"Give a value for b"<<endl; cin>>b; add (int a, int b); //aquí y en otras líneas me sale: expected primary expression before int. break; case 's': cout << "Give a value for a"<<endl; cin>>a; cout <<"Give a value for b"<<endl; cin>>b; ssub (int a, int b); break; case 'm': cout << "Give a value for a"<<endl; cin>>a; cout <<"Give a value for b"<<endl; cin>>b; mult (int a, int b); break; case 'e': x='e'; break; default: cout<<"Wrong choice. Run the program again and choose another letter"<<endl; break; } return r; } cout<<"The result is " << menu (int a, int b)<<endl; int main() { menu (int a, int b); return 0; } `

  • Reading input from a text file, omits the first and adds a nonsense value to the end?

    - by Greenhouse Gases
    Hi there When I input locations from a txt file I am getting a peculiar error where it seems to miss off the first entry, yet add a garbage entry to the end of the link list (it is designed to take the name, latitude and longitude for each location you will notice). I imagine this to be an issue with where it starts collecting the inputs and where it stops but I cant find the error!! It reads the first line correctly but then skips to the next before adding it because during testing for the bug it had no record of the first location Lisbon though whilst stepping into the method call it was reading it. Very bizarre but hopefully someone knows the issue. Here is firstly my header file: #include <string> struct locationNode { char nodeCityName [35]; double nodeLati; double nodeLongi; locationNode* Next; void CorrectCase() // Correct upper and lower case letters of input { int MAX_SIZE = 35; int firstLetVal = this->nodeCityName[0], letVal; int n = 1; // variable for name index from second letter onwards if((this->nodeCityName[0] >90) && (this->nodeCityName[0] < 123)) // First letter is lower case { firstLetVal = firstLetVal - 32; // Capitalise first letter this->nodeCityName[0] = firstLetVal; } while(n <= MAX_SIZE - 1) { if((this->nodeCityName[n] >= 65) && (this->nodeCityName[n] <= 90)) { letVal = this->nodeCityName[n] + 32; this->nodeCityName[n] = letVal; } n++; } //cityNameInput = this->nodeCityName; } }; class Locations { private: int size; public: Locations(){ }; // constructor for the class locationNode* Head; //int Add(locationNode* Item); }; And here is the file containing main: // U08221.cpp : main project file. #include "stdafx.h" #include "Locations.h" #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <fstream> using namespace std; int n = 0,x, locationCount = 0, MAX_SIZE = 35; string cityNameInput; char targetCity[35]; bool acceptedInput = false, userInputReq = true, match = false, nodeExists = false;// note: addLocation(), set to true to enable user input as opposed to txt file locationNode *start_ptr = NULL; // pointer to first entry in the list locationNode *temp, *temp2; // Part is a pointer to a new locationNode we can assign changing value followed by a call to Add locationNode *seek, *bridge; void setElementsNull(char cityParam[]) { int y=0, count =0; while(cityParam[y] != NULL) { y++; } while(y < MAX_SIZE) { cityParam[y] = NULL; y++; } } void addLocation() { temp = new locationNode; // declare the space for a pointer item and assign a temporary pointer to it if(!userInputReq) // bool that determines whether user input is required in adding the node to the list { cout << endl << "Enter the name of the location: "; cin >> temp->nodeCityName; temp->CorrectCase(); setElementsNull(temp->nodeCityName); cout << endl << "Please enter the latitude value for this location: "; cin >> temp->nodeLati; cout << endl << "Please enter the longitude value for this location: "; cin >> temp->nodeLongi; cout << endl; } temp->Next = NULL; //set to NULL as when one is added it is currently the last in the list and so can not point to the next if(start_ptr == NULL){ // if list is currently empty, start_ptr will point to this node start_ptr = temp; } else { temp2 = start_ptr; // We know this is not NULL - list not empty! while (temp2->Next != NULL) { temp2 = temp2->Next; // Move to next link in chain until reach end of list } temp2->Next = temp; } ++locationCount; // increment counter for number of records in list if(!userInputReq){ cout << "Location sucessfully added to the database! • Change date in a SQL query to reference a cell in Excel

    - by Adil
    I have the following code that returns the needed data into excel and manually changing the date will change the returned data; however, I'd like to reference a cell with a formula that will make the query a bit more user friendly. I've tried using my limited knowledge of referencing a cell but none have worked. This information is in cell A1 and the query is placed in cell A2 with the following equation: =wwQuery("STKAP03", $A$1) SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER OFF SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(INSQL, "SELECT DateTime, [40_MOTORS.MI436423.CIN], [40_MOTORS.MI436425.CIN] FROM WideHistory WHERE [40_MOTORS.MI436423.CIN] IS NOT NULL AND wwRetrievalMode = 'Delta' AND wwVersion = 'Latest' AND DateTime >='20120409 07:00:00' These two dates/times I'd like to reference cells on a different sheet AND DateTime <= '20120416 07:00:00'")

    I am writing a program (in cpp) to check the primality of a given number The point where i am struck is , I need to check in between the program wether the value i obtained upon some arithmetic operations on the input is an integer or not i.e lets say input is 'a' I want to know how to check if 'b' is integer or not (FYI, b=(a+1)/6 ) My attempt for this : int main() { using std::cin; using std::cout; int b,c; int a; cout<<"enter the number"; cin>>a; b=(a+1)/6; c=(a-1)/6; if (b is an integer) cout << "The given number is prime"; else if (c is an integer) cin << "The given number is prime!"; else cout<<"The number is not prime"; return 0; }

    This is a simple random access filing program . The problem arises where i want to write data randomly. If I write any where in the file the previous records are set to 0. the last 1 which is being entered currently holds the correct value all others =0. Problem is at if(action == "add") Here's my code: #include <iostream> #include <string> #include <vector> #include <algorithm> #include <ctime> #include <cstdlib> using namespace std; int main() { vector<string>::const_iterator myIterator; vector<string>::const_iterator iter; vector<string> games; games.push_back("Crysis 2"); games.push_back("GodOfWar 3"); games.push_back("FIFA 12"); cout <<"Welcome to your Games Library.\n"; cout <<"\nThese are your games:\n"; for (iter = games.begin(); iter != games.end(); ++iter) { cout <<*iter <<endl; } //the loop! string action; string newGame; cout <<"\n-Type 'exit' if you want to quit.\n-Type 'add' if you want to add a game.\n-Type 'delete' if you want to delete a game.\n-Type 'find' if you want to search a game.\n-Type 'game' if you don't know what game to play.\n-Type 'show' if you want to view your library."; while (action != "exit") { cout <<"\n\nWhat do you want to do: "; cin >> action; //problem is here if (action == "add") { cout <<"\nType the name of the game you want to add: "; getline (cin, newGame); games.push_back(newGame); for (iter = games.begin(); iter != games.end(); ++iter) { cout <<*iter <<endl; } continue; } else if (action == "show") { cout <<"\nThese are your games:\n"; for (iter = games.begin(); iter != games.end(); ++iter) { cout <<*iter <<endl; } } else if (action == "delete") { cout <<"Type the name of the game you want to delete: "; cin >> newGame; getline (cin, newGame); iter = find(games.begin(), games.end(), newGame); if(iter != games.end()) { games.erase(iter); cout <<"\nGame deleted!"; } else { cout<<"\nGame not found."; } continue; } else if (action == "find") { cout <<"Which game you want to look for in your library: "; cin >> newGame; getline (cin, newGame); iter = find(games.begin(), games.end(), newGame); if (iter != games.end()) { cout << "Game found.\n"; } else { cout << "Game not found.\n"; } continue; } else if (action == "game") { srand(static_cast<unsigned int>(time(0))); random_shuffle(games.begin(), games.end()); cout << "\nWhy don't you play " << games[0]; continue; } else if (action == "quit") { cout <<"\nRemember to have fun while gaming!!\n"; break; } else { cout <<"\nCommand not found"; } } return 0; }

  • Loop crashing program having to do with 2D arrays

    - by user450062
    I am creating an encoding program and when I instruct the program to create a 5X5 grid based on the alphabet while skipping over letters that match up to certain pre-defined variables(which are given values by user input during runtime). I have a loop that instructs the loop to keep running until the values that access the array are out of bounds, the loop seems to cause the problem. This code is standardized so there shouldn't be much trouble compiling it in another compiler. Also would it be better to seperate my program into functions? here is the code: #include<iostream> #include<fstream> #include<cstdlib> #include<string> #include<limits> using namespace std; int main(){ while (!cin.fail()) { char type[81]; char filename[20]; char key [5]; char f[2] = "q"; char g[2] = "q"; char h[2] = "q"; char i[2] = "q"; char j[2] = "q"; char k[2] = "q"; char l[2] = "q"; int a = 1; int b = 1; int c = 1; int d = 1; int e = 1; string cipherarraytemplate[5][5]= { {"a","b","c","d","e"}, {"f","g","h","i","j"}, {"k","l","m","n","o"}, {"p","r","s","t","u"}, {"v","w","x","y","z"} }; string cipherarray[5][5]= { {"a","b","c","d","e"}, {"f","g","h","i","j"}, {"k","l","m","n","o"}, {"p","r","s","t","u"}, {"v","w","x","y","z"} }; cout<<"Enter the name of a file you want to create.\n"; cin>>filename; ofstream outFile; outFile.open(filename); outFile<<fixed; outFile.precision(2); outFile.setf(ios_base::showpoint); cin.ignore(std::numeric_limits<int>::max(),'\n'); cout<<"enter your codeword(codeword can have no repeating letters)\n"; cin>>key; while (key[a] != '\0' ){ while(b < 6){ cipherarray[b][c] = key[a]; if ( f == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = f; } if ( f != "q" && g == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = g; } if ( g != "q" && h == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = h; } if ( h != "q" && i == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = i; } if ( i != "q" && j == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = j; } if ( j != "q" && k == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = k; } if ( k != "q" && l == "q" ) { cipherarray[b][c] = l; } a++; b++; } c++; b = 1; } while (c < 6 || b < 6){ if (cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == f || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == g || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == h || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == i || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == j || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == k || cipherarraytemplate[d][e] == l){ d++; } else { cipherarray[b][c] = cipherarraytemplate[d][e]; d++; b++; } if (d == 6){ d = 1; e++; } if (b == 6){ c++; b = 1; } } cout<<"now enter some text."<<endl<<"To end this program press Crtl-Z\n"; while(!cin.fail()){ cin.getline(type,81); outFile<<type<<endl; } outFile.close(); } } I know there is going to be some mid-forties guy out there who is going to stumble on to this post, he's have been programming for 20-some years and he's going to look at my code and say: "what is this guy doing".

  • How to check if a variable is an integer? [closed]

    - by FyrePlanet
    I'm going through my C++ book and have currently made a working Guess The Number game. The game generates a random number based on current time, has the user input their guess, and then tells them whether it was too high, too low, or the correct number. The game functions fine if you enter a number, but returns 'Too High' if you enter something that is not a number (such as a letter or punctuation). Not only does it return 'too high', but it also continually returns it. I was wondering what I could do to check if the guess, as input by the user, is an integer and if it is not, to return 'Not a number. Guess again.' Here is the code. #include <iostream> #include <cstdlib> #include <ctime> using namespace std; int main() { srand(time(0)); // seed the random number generator int theNumber = rand() % 100 + 1; // random number between 1 and 100 int tries = 0, guess; cout << "\tWelcome to Guess My Number!\n\n"; do { cout << "Enter a guess: "; cin >> guess; ++tries; if (guess > theNumber) cout << "Too high!\n\n"; if (guess < theNumber) cout << "Too low!\n\n"; } while (guess != theNumber); cout << "\nThat's it! You got it in " << tries << " guesses!\n"; cout << "\nPress Enter to exit.\n"; cin.ignore(cin.rdbuf()->in_avail() + 1); return 0; }

  • C++ match string in file and get line number

    - by Corey
    I have a file with the top 1000 baby names. I want to ask the user for a name...search the file...and tell the user what rank that name is for boy names and what rank for girl names. If it isn't in boy names or girl names, it tells the user it's not among the popular names for that gender. The file is laid out like this: Rank Boy-Names Girl-Names 1 Jacob Emily 2 Michael Emma . . . Desired output for input Michael would be: Michael is 2nd most popular among boy names. If Michael is not in girl names it should say: Michael is not among the most popular girl names Though if it was, it would say: Micheal is (rank) among girl names The code I have so far is below.. I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for any help. #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <string> #include <cctype> using namespace std; void find_name(string name); int main(int argc, char **argv) { string name; cout << "Please enter a baby name to search for:\n"; cin >> name; /*while(!(cin>>name)) { cout << "Please enter a baby name to search for:\n"; cin >> name; }*/ find_name(name); cin.get(); cin.get(); return 0; } void find_name(string name) { ifstream input; int line = 0; string line1 = " "; int rank; string boy_name = ""; string girl_name = ""; input.open("/<path>/babynames2004.rtf"); if (!input) { cout << "Unable to open file\n"; exit(1); } while(input.good()) { while(getline(input,line1)) { input >> rank >> boy_name >> girl_name; if (boy_name == name) { cout << name << " is ranked " << rank << " among boy names\n"; } else { cout << name << " is not among the popular boy names\n"; } if (girl_name == name) { cout << name << " is ranked " << rank << " among girl names\n"; } else { cout << name << " is not among the popular girl names\n"; } } } input.close(); }
