• can't properly shutdown ubuntu and sound problem on HP mini 311 netbook

  hi, I recently bought a HP mini 311 netbook. I replaced its harddrive and installed ubuntu 10.04. Since then, I have encountered some very strange problem with its sound and shutdown/reboot. At times, when I start the computer, it will have no sound, on the GUI the sound is at max, but no sound is available. This sometimes also happen after after upgrades, hibernate, and toggling the wireless radio button. Strangely, when the sound is out the device will also refuse to be shutdown. If I shutdown the computer using the GUI, it will simply go back to the log in screen without actually shutting down. If I use "sudo shutdown 0", the computer will hang on the loading screen of the shut down process. I had to force the pc to shutdown by holding the power button down. usually (probably always) after I force a turn-off then start off again. the sound and shutdown become normal. I wonder if anyone have clues regarding to the cause of this problem. This the info about the computer: 1) installed ubuntu 10.04LTS RC, later upgraded to formal released version. 2) cat /proc/asound/version == "Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21." however, when doing 'alsaconf' the version displayed is 1.0.23 any help is appreciated.   Hi all! I have rich web app btuil with ExtJS. It has multi-select list control (created with JS+CSS). I want to click on some item in that list using HP QuickTest Pro 10 with Internet Explorer 6. I added that item into Object repository and found that following code works - selects some item: Browser("blah").Page("blah").WebElement("SomeElem").Click next code also works: Browser("blah").Page("blah").WebElement("SomeElem").FireEvent("onMouseDown") Browser("blah").Page("blah").WebElement("SomeElem").FireEvent("onMouseUp") Browser("blah").Page("blah").WebElement("SomeElem").FireEvent("onClick") But I want to select several items using shift+click method. I don't know to do that :( So I have a few questions: How can perform click with mouse on several web elements with Shift key pressed? I tried to do that using CreateEventObject + shiftKey set to true, but the method (perform fireEvent on DOM object, not object from Object repository) doesn't work: Browser("blah").Page("blah").WebElement("SomeElem").Object.FireEvent("onClick") What the difference between WebElement("Element").FireEvent("OnClick") and WebElement("Element").Object.FireEvent("OnClick") ?   Hi all, I am trying to figure out what is my current NIC firmware version. If I run the latest firmware upgrade from HP, I get the following: It doesn't tell me the current version. If I try to check it from Device Manager, I get this: That's the driver version, not the hardware firmware version. If I reboot the computer, I don't see the NIC firmware during the POST.. How would I go about finding the current firmware version... Thanks a lot! Toast

• Kernel Panic - Not Syncing: Fatal exception

  Server (HP Proliant D320e G8 v2) froze at this screen during boot today (running CentOS 6.5): I was able to get the server to boot after a 'press and hold'. I've been having many problems with the server lately - mainly related to the iLO and being unable to install CentOS 7. Could someone please help me decode this screen? Does it suggest there could be a serious problem? Or does this just happen sometimes? It is possible that the OS wasn't 'shutdown' properly before the failed boot.

• PostgreSQL server: 10k RPM SAS or Intel 520 Series SSD drives?

  We will be expanding the storage for a PostgreSQL server and one of the things we are considering is using SSDs (Intel 520 Series) instead of rotating discs (10k RPM). Price per GB is comparable and we expect improved performance, however we are concerned about longevity since our database usage pattern is quite write-heavy. We are also concerned about data corruption in case of power failure (due to SSDs write cache not flushing properly). We currently use RAID10 with 4 active HDDs (10k 146GB) and 1 spare configured in the controller. It's a HP DL380 G6 server with P410 Smart Array Controller and BBWC. What makes more sense: upgrading the drives to 300GB 10k RPM or using Intel 520 Series SSDs (240GB)?

• Laptop HDD failure imminent?

  I have an HP Compaq 615 laptop with an 160 GB 7200 rpm HDD. Hasn't been dropped or shaken, in fact it almost always stayed on my desk. I've treated it as nice as I could. The other day, however, my OS froze and I could hear a repeated clink-clink-clink coming from the HDD zone of the laptop. I had to switch off hardware-ly the laptop and re-start it. It worked very well after, including now. However I backed up immediately the core data on my USB drive and ordered an external USB HDD for periodic backups. Will it die soon or it was just a "blip"?

• Serial number not found, copy of Windows not genuine

  I have an HP-G71-340US notebook that I purchased 11/29/09. When I power it up, a black screen comes on that shows "serial number not found" and it also says that my copy of Windows 7 Home Basic is not genuine – but my computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium. In BIOS, my serial number is not shown either and I did pull out the little battery to reset it which allowed me to bypass the suddenly new locked BIOS that needed a password to enter. I'm sure this is a masterpiece created by my 6 or 9 yr old child while trying to play on my laptop. Can I fix these two problems?

• Sudden restart now chrome kills computer

  My computer suddenly restart itself the other day and when it came back up so much as clicking on the icon for Google Chrome freezes everything. I uninstalled Chrome and tried reinstalling is but as soon as the download finished, the computer froze again. I tried installing an earlier version (about a week prior) and it froze differently but still froze. I am also getting notification that the battery needs to be replaced. At the moment I am running it sans battery and using firefox and everything seems to be fine. I have a HP dv4t running Windows 7.

• Redhat Kernel patching advice

  An audit has pointed out that a RHEL server I manage has not had the latest kernel patches applied. I'm confused about kernel patching and within RHEL in relation to RHEL dot releases i.e 5.2 , 5.3 ,5.4 ..... Can someone answer these questions ? If I want to stay at a dot release of RHEL, say 5.4, can apply just updates to the 5.4 kernel or will applying kernel updates bring the server to a later dot release by default? The reason for this question is that I have applications that are only supported on say RHEL5.4 and going to a more recent dot release of RHEL 5 would break the support. I have some HP psp hba drivers compiled against the currently installed kernel, will applying a kernel update break these drivers as they were complied against the orginal kernel ? Anything else I need to look out for with regards to kernel patching ?

• If a managed network switch were to overheat, would you consider it no longer reliable?

  Here is the scenario - I have a network switch, one of several in a stack. It's fan failed. Soon, there were reports of users with network issues. After quickly replacing the fan, the users were fine, network issues were resolved. I assume the unit was overheating, and thus failing somehow. Today someone suggested to me, that I should not assume the unit is 100% reliable anymore. So what do you think, would an overheat condition (less than 1 day with the fan stopped) potentially cause permanent damage that could at some point come to the surface as future network failures/issues? If it matters, we are talking managed switches such as 3Com/HP SuperStack , ProCurve or PWR-Plus.

• Booting from e-sata drive

  I have a HP EliteBook laptop (don't know exact product number), which has an internal hard drive with Windows installed on it. I have an external hard drive with e-sata and USB ports, linux installed on it. When I try to boot from the external drive, it works if I use USB but not if I use e-sata. In the BIOS setup, I have the following boot order set: External SATA drive USB Hard Drive Notebook Upgrade Bay Notebook Hard Drive etc. When I boot from another drive (such as the internal hard drive or from CD-ROM), and have the e-sata cable connected, it works perfectly. Is there any way to boot from the e-sata drive?

• RAID P410i and P812 performance issues

  I'm having much trouble with I/O performance of HP DL360 server with two RAID controllers - P410i and P812, Windows Server 2008, 36 GiB RAM and 16 x Intel Xeon x5550. The server runs a bunch of tasks producing heavy sequential I/O, and after about 20-30 minutes of intensive work it looks like the tasks are stuck, not using CPU and with enough free memory (so this cannot be a bottleneck). The same tasks were running quite well on the older server (Windows Server 2003, 4 x Intel Xeon, 12 GiB RAM). RAID cache is present, write-cache battery is installed. Cache is configured as 25% readahead/75% writeback. The swap file resides on the logical disk served by P410i and other logical disks are on P812. Can someone tell me what can be the matter of this? Is this a hardware problem or misconfiguration?

• When my printer fails to print with only "printer error" as the message, how can I find details?

  Setup: Dell Latitude D620 in the docking station HP color laserjet 2550L Parallel cable Sometimes when I undock (and I do suspend before undocking and docking), when I reattach, the printer will not print. It simply says "error", with no description. Killing and restarting the spooler will not help, but rebooting will. There is nothing in the system event logs, nor does the print spooler window provide any details other than "error" My question is, when there is an error, is there any way to find out what is causing it to get stuck, so that I can "unstuck" it instead of rebooting?

• Teamed network cards on a Proliant Server

  We have 4 network cards in a Proliant server with Server 2008R2 running Exchange 2010, with 1 card set to a static IP address and the other 3 set to DHCP. I just need some clarification as I have not teamed network cards. Do all the network cards need to have a static IP when I set as a team. The connection that has the static IP is the IP that I need to use for the Server. Is it possible to set the teamed cards to the same static IP or do I have to change the static IP to another IP then use it for the teamed IP? I will be using HP Network Configuration Utility to set this up.

• How can I set the fan speed to 100% on a laptop?

  I recently purchased a HP Pavilion dv7-4031. When it's cool, it works smoothly and efficiently. However when CPU and GUP temperatures reach 60c and above, the PC starts freezing up and stuttering. I can hear that the fan speeds steadily increase all the way up to 70-80c. This is what pisses me off: I want the fan speeds to run 100% all the time, perhaps preventing the high temperatures in the first place. The way it is now, fan speeds only increase to keep internal temperatures at above 60c. I've searched all over for any sort of speed control, finding nothing. Any help appreciated. I have tried Speedfan. In "Fans" there is nothing listed. I took that as a bad sign. The BIOS is pathetic, and only has 4 or 5 changeable settings, including "Quickstart" and "Boot order"

• What is the most suitable way to manage iSCSI storage for Virtual Environments?

  We are planning to place a HP MSA P2000 with two FC/iSCSI controllers in our network. We have two options to provide more storage to Virtual Machines (We are running Hyper-V): A) Add iSCSI targets to the Virtual Hosts and then create VHD that we would add to each guest server. B) Directly add iSCSI targets in each guest server. Just wondering if one of those options is better than the other, and which is the common practice in a virtualized environment. • laptop does not boot

  I have hp probook 4520s lap. But now it does not boot. When I press switch on button fans are working but it shows black screen. HDD light just blink one or two times when start but it will not continue. And usually web cam light should blink one time when startup but it doesn't. I connect to different monitor but couldn't see a output. This lap bought 3 months before but it doesn't have international warranty. Therefore I can not do anything. If someone can provide any clue or suggestion that what happened and what should I do, appreciated. thank you.

• Compaq nc4200 screen cutting out and keyboard lagging after dropping - could I repair this?

  I have a HP Compaq nc4200 laptop. I got it from a family member who no longer needed it, who got it from a sale of old office equipment, so it's at the very least third-hand, and somewhat battered. Today, I dropped it. It seemed unharmed at first, but the screen cuts out every few minutes (sometimes seconds), then fades back. Keyboard input also occasionally starts lagging, as does the mouse. It might be a coincidence, but, oddly, it seems as if, when the screen cuts out, it comes back sooner if I use the trackpad. Is this something that I could fix? What might be causing it?

• can I force server to always use turboboost?

  I'm using HP DL360p Gen8 with 2 * Xeon E5-2640. I do not load CPU 100%, i load it only ~10% and so I guess turboboost is not activated. However I'm using my server for trading so I absolutely don't care about CPU loading but I always want to process my data asap. So I want server to operate using maximum 3 GHz. I.e. 90% of CPU time I don't have anything to process. 10% of CPU time I have data to process. But I need to process it ASAP. I need every single microsecond. So I want server to operate always at maximum "turboboosted" mode. Is it possible?

• PC won't post after replacing mobo

  I am trying to fix an older HP desktop (~2 yrs old) that didn't seem to have video working. The video card on the machine was integrated. After some debugging, it looked to be the mobo, so I went out and got a new one (also with integrated video). Now, it pretty much does the same thing. Here's the symptoms: no video, doesn't post at all, fans DO spin (both chasis and CPU). Any other ideas? I suppose it could be the CPU, but I would think if it was, it would at least post.

• Misbehaving Network Printers - options?

  We are having some issue with printers on our network. We have 3 floors, 2 printers per floor (A3 & A4) all connected to the same Print Server. The issue is that the same printer may not behave the same on two different, seemingly identical desktops. The commonest place this is seen on our bulk print script in AutoCAD - occasionally drawings may print Landscape on Portrait paper, despite drawings always being Landscape... Does any one have any suggestions on what we can check / try? The current line of attack is to setup a new Print Server, with the HP universal print driver rather than the device specific drivers, and replace printers using exactly the same method on all desktops. Sound good?
