  • I can't capture the output screen of a game tutorial

    Hello, I'm trying to do a screen capture with gtk-recordmydesktop and other capture tools but for some reason, it will not capture an output screen while its running. It captures one screen but doesn't show the rest. I can capture my screen running if I use my flip camcorder but recordmydesktop will not work. Is there a way to capture live video playing on the desktop without using an outside camera? Brian

    My account has been approved and running adverts for quite sometime now. However, today I just got a message (it seems legitimate) from Google AdSense saying: Congratulations, your AdSense account has been approved to show AdSense ads on your own website. Within a few hours, you will begin to see live ads. Should I be concerned? They say that they review accounts to check for compliance, could this be some weird way of saying they rechecked my sites and they complied?

    1024x768 Truth be told, as I was getting my morning coffee today, I was pondering the recent election results more than Oracle [there, I said it]. But then an email from Glen Hawkins from the Enterprise Management team hit my Inbox and I started viewing this video. It was about the world’s largest convenience store chain, 7-Eleven, focusing on creating the best Digital Guest Experience (DGE) for their customers. Turns out that Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) powers 7-Eleven’s DGE Middleware Platform as a Service solution that consists of Oracle SOA Suite, Exalogic, and Exadata. “We need to present a consistent view of 7-Eleven across all our endpoints: 10,000 stores & various digital entities like our websites and apps”, said Ronald Clanton, the DGE Program Director for 7-Eleven. As 7-Eleven was rolling out a loyalty program with mobile support across multiple geos, it had many complex business & technical requirements, including supporting a wide variety of different apps, 10M guests in NA alone, ability to support high speed transactions, and very aggressive timelines. A key requirement was shortening the cycle for provisioning new environments. Whereas with other vendors this would take a few weeks, Oracle consulting showed them how with OEM provisioning new environments would take half a day, which was quite impressive. 7-Eleven has started to roll out this new program and are delighted to report that some provisioning cycles are as low as 10 minutes which includes provisioning the full Oracle SOA suite, Exalogic and more.   • Analysing SQLBits Feedback

    Earlier this week I received all the feedback that people offered on my session at SQLBits 7 in York – “SSIS Dataflow Performance Tuning” (the video is available online if you wish to see it). As you may have gathered from previous posts on this blog and my less-SQLy-focused Wordpress blog I am a big fan of collecting and tracking both personal and public data and session feedback lends itself very well to tracking because it is quantitative rather than qualitative; by that I mean attendees are invited to provide marks out of ten rather than (or, in the case of SQLBits, as well as) written comments. The SQLBits feedback is also useful because they use a consistent format – the same questions are asked each time – this means it is particularly easy to to track whether the scores that people give are trending up or down. I suspect that somewhere the SQLBits organisers have a big Analysis Services cube (ok, perhaps its an Excel pivot table) that allows them to analyse these scores per conference, speaker, track etc.… and there’s no reason that we as session speakers cannot do the same thing. To that end I have started to store my feedback in an Excel spreadsheet of my own which in the interests of transparency is available for public viewing (only a web browser required) on SkyDrive at http://cid-550f681dad532637.office.live.com/view.aspx/Public/Misc/Personal%20SQLBits%20Session%20Feedback.xlsx. I have used a pivot table to aggregate all that feedback and here is a screenshot: I am hereby making a public plea to the SQLBits organisers (on the off-chance that they are reading) to please continue to keep the feedback format consistent in the future and I encourage them to publish all of the feedback in an anonymised form. I would also encourage anyone doing conference speaking to track their conference feedback in the same way that I am doing so that you get an insight into whether or not you are improving over time. It is not difficult to setup and maintaining it as you do more sessions takes very little effort. Storing feedback data like this leads me to wider thoughts about well-known conventions and data format standardisation. Let’s imagine a utopia where there were a standard set of questions for capturing session feedback that were leveraged at every conference regardless of subject matter, location or culture; that would give rise to immense cross-conference and cross-discipline analysis – the data analyst in me goes giddy at the thought of it. It is scenarios like this that drive my interest both in data formats such as iCalendar, microformats and RDF, and in emerging movements such as the semantic web and linked data, all things which I have written about in the past. I don’t know whether we will ever reach the stage where every piece of data has structured, descriptive metadata associated with it but I live in hope. @Jamiet

  • Control Media via Arduino

    I want to create an application that controls the volume, play next\last, stop\play and things like this (I don't know what they called) like in a keyboard. I have tried to find how to do this with Python\Java but I couldn't find how. The main idea is (if some-one knows what is arduino) to connect it to my PC (Ubuntu) and to get from it signals that gives me values and with this values to be able to change the volume and to do next song\video.   • New computer hangs on shutdown/reboot, how to troubleshoot?

    My system is working perfectly but it freezes during shutdown/reboot/suspend/hibernate: All windows and the menu bar disappear but the desktop wallpaper remains. It doesn't even show the shutdown screen (the one with the animated dots) where I could hit ESC and watch the shutdown console text. The system is brand-new and fully updated using Update Manager. How can I determine what is causing the freeze? Is there a log I can investigate? How can I fix this? I see no obvious cause of the freeze. The only USB attachment is a mouse/keyboard; I don't have any external storage attached; and I don't have any programs running (the machine freezes even when doing shutdown right from the login screen). What I've tried so far: Based on other questions (this, this, and this) that suggest some ACPI settings, I've tried sudo shutdown -h now to see whether the shutdown console text display offers any hints, but the system doesn't even get that far - it still freezes while the screen shown the desktop background image, without any toolbars. Only sudo shutdown --force works, but that's not a solution. Editing the grub menu to add acpi=off to the kernel didn't help. I guess there's not much point in trying the other (lesser) ACPI suggestions? Adding noapic to the grub entry had no discernible effect. Adding nolapic instead did something (I had removed the quiet option) - the system managed to continue further with the shutdown, right until the line Checking for running unattended-upgrades: which were the last characters on the screen. I've also checked the system BIOS, especially regarding power options, but didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Switching the BIOS standby setting from S3 to S1 didn't help. The standby setting can't be disabled, and there are no other ACPI-related settings AFAIK. BIOS reset didn't help. Not surprised; hadn't changed anything. I tried going to a virtual console (CtrlAltF1) as suggested by djeikyb and from there did a shutdown -h now and it froze there too, after this console output. I didn't try killing processes one at a time because I'm still too newbie to figure out how to do that. Booting with kernel 2.6.35.22 rather than 2.6.35.25 didn't help. Disabling the Nvidia drivers didn't help. Booting from Live CD (USB stick in fact) didn't help; it freezes the same way. Booting from Live CD, with acpi=off noapic nolapic didn't help either. Neither did just nolapic. So evidently this is not some custom setting in my install, but some sort of basic issue. MemTest competed in 1 hour without errors.

  • install to USB without touching windows MBR

    I would like as full of an install as possible (most notably no casper, just straight on the drive) on a USB stick, but I'm not allowed to touch the current configuration of the computer I'll be running it on at all (except of course changing the boot options to boot from usb). Most guides I read are about getting a live install with persistence on USB, or (I think) still replace the MBR with GRUB. Is there any way to combine the two, and not touch the underlying system?

  • How to Boot from iRAM Solid State Drive on Ubuntu

    I've got an iRAM solid state drive. I'd like to use this to store a linux root filesystem; the trouble is the device is not recognized as a hard drive to the BIOS. It only shows up if a live CD environment is loaded and the scsi drivers are available (may be other drivers needed as well). I've heard of Boot to Ram and wonder if some variation of that could work here and I could run a linux install off the iRAM??

  • Cheese won't start

    I can't start Cheese Webcam Booth. It starts loading and there is a brief moment when the window shows up but then it disappears, like it shuts itself down and it's not in system monitor. My webcam works perfectly in Skype video call. I installed and run Camorama and it gave me an error: Could not connect to video device (/dev/video0) Please check connection When I run the lsusb I get this line for my webcam: Bus 002 Device 002: ID 04f2:b210 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd And for my graphic card, running lspci: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07) It's not a pressing matter, but it bugs my nerves, if it works on Skype, why does Cheese and other programs refuse to run. As I said, it's not a big deal but any help would be appreciated.
