• the problem about different treatment to __VA_ARGS__ when using VS 2008 and GCC

  I am trying to identify a problem because of an unusual usage of variadic macros. Here is the hypothetic macro: #define va(c, d, ...) c(d, __VA_ARGS__) #define var(a, b, ...) va(__VA_ARGS__, a, b) var(2, 3, printf, “%d %d %d\n”, 1); For gcc, the preprocessor will output printf("%d %d %d\n", 1, 2, 3) but for VS 2008, the output is printf, “%d %d %d\n”, 1(2, 3); I suspect the difference is caused by the different treatment to VA_ARGS, for gcc, it will first expand the expression to va(printf, "%d %d %d\n", 1, 2, 3), and treat 1, 2, 3 as the VA_ARGS for macro va. But for VS 2008, it will first treat b as VA_ARGS for macro va, and then do the expansion. Which one is correct interpretation for C99 variadic macro? or my usage falls into an undefined behavior?

• Why is .NET faster than C++ in this case?

  -edit- I LOVE SLaks comment. "The amount of misinformation in these answers is staggering." :D Calm down guys. Pretty much all of you were wrong. I DID make optimizations. It turns out whatever optimizations I made wasn't good enough. I ran the code in GCC using gettimeofday (I'll paste code below) and used g++ -O2 file.cpp and got slightly faster results then C#. Maybe MS didn't create the optimizations needed in this specific case but after downloading and installing mingw I was tested and found the speed to be near identical. Justicle Seems to be right. I could have sworn I use clock on my PC and used that to count and found it was slower but problem solved. C++ speed isn't almost twice as slower in the MS compiler. When my friend informed me of this I couldn't believe it. So I took his code and put some timers onto it. Instead of Boo I used C#. I constantly got faster results in C#. Why? The .NET version was nearly half the time no matter what number I used. • How can I make a read only version of a class?

  I have a class with various public properties which I allow users to edit through a property grid. For persistence this class is also serialized/deserialized to/from an XML file through DataContractSerializer. Sometimes I want to user to be able to save (serialize) changes they've made to an instance of the class. Yet at other times I don't want to allow the user to save their changes, and should instead see all the properties in the property grid as read only. I don't want to allow users to make changes that they'll never be able to save later. Similar to how MS Word will allow users to open documents that are currently opened by someone else but only as read only. My class has a boolean property that determines if the class should be read-only, but is it possible to use this property to somehow dynamically add a read-only attributes to the class properties at run-time? If not what is an alternative solution? Should I wrap my class in a read-only wrapper class?

• Tentative date casting in tsql

  I am looking for something like TRYCAST in TSQL or an equivalent method / hack. In my case I am extracting some date data from an xml column. The following query throws "Arithmetic overflow error converting expression to data type datetime." if the piece of data found in the xml cannot be converted to datetime (in this specific case, the date is "0001-01-01" in some cases). • Is Alpha Five Version 10 really all that its reported to be?

  I came across this RDMS via the advert on stackoverflow. Seems to be in the vein of MS Access / Filemaker / Apex database devlopment tools but focused on web based applications. It quotes rave reviews from EWeek and a favourable mention from Dr Dobbs regarding its ability to create AJAX web applications without coding. The Eweek review, apparently written by an ASP.NET programmer, goes on to proclaim the ease at which apps can be extended using the inbuilt XBasic language and how custom javascript can easily be added without wading through code. Has anyone here built a web app with Alpha 5? Does anyone have comments on the development process, the speed of it or limitations they encountered along the way? To me it seems Oracle APEX comes closest to the feature set, has anyone programmed in both and have any comments?

• Why is this if statement failing?

  I'm working on an existing class that is two steps derived from System.Windows.Forms.Combo box. The class overrides the Text property thus: public override string Text { get { return this.AccessibilityObject.Value; } set { if (base.Text != value) { base.Text = value; } } } The reason given for that "get" is this MS bug: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814346 However, I'm more interested in the fact that the "if" doesn't work. There are times where "base.Text != value" is true and yet pressing F10 steps straight to the closing } of the "set" and the Text property is not changed. I've seen this both by just checking values in the debugger, and putting a conditional breakpoint on that only breaks when the "if" statement's predicate is true. How on earth can "if" go wrong? The class between this and ComboBox doesn't touch the Text property. The bug above shouldn't really be affecting anything - it says it's fixed in VS2005. Is the debugger showing different values than the program itself sees?

  I remember seeing a question on my official MS 70-536 exam that talked about a simple class that was designed to be exposed for COM calling clients and etc. of all the members defined in the classes I chose the answer D. The one that used a generic. My question to you guys is this: If you were designing a .net custom type that was to be eventually consumed by a com caller or a com type .... of all the guidelines I have read on this subject. Generics is the one .Net topic I would not include in a class for this purpose I would omit such a data member or use something else? Am I right in thinking this. As soon as I saw this question I knew it was generics but I can't seem to prove it. Surely I did not make this up ... generics is a .net feature right?

  Greetings my wonderful StackOverflow family :) I grew up using Windows and switched to OSX as a Computer Science major in College. I've recently started my first real software developer job, and have a ThinkPad and Windows XP for developing ASP.NET / MS SQL applications (Visual Studio 2008). Question: Basically, I am wondering if any developers out there have had real success creating ASP.NET applications on a Mac using a VM? I've been fighting with Parallels 5 all week and finally have Windows 7 and VS 2008 running but my hot-keys are all screwed up. Is it worth the work to keep beating this thing into submission? Should I give up? Should I give Mono a try instead? Thanks Folks, I can't wait to see what you all think!

• Shrink database after removing extra data

  We have a need to fit database in 4G in order to use ms sql express edition. I started from 7G database, and found a lot of not needed records, and deleted them. After Shrink database size is 4.6G, and 748MB is free (according to database properties). However, when i execute exec sp_spaceused i am having interesting results: DatabaseName Database_size unallocation space xxxxxx 4726.50 MB 765.42 MB Reserved Data index_size unused 3899472 KB 1608776 KB 1448400 KB 842296 KB Any ideas, how can i bite at least some of this unused space?   I was trying to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 on my Windows 7 pc. When I tried to install it, it tells me that I have a newer version installed on my pc. So, I checked that Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 installed some sql server 2008 tools for me. I decided to uninstall SharePoint 2010(which I wasn't using) and then tried to install MS SQL Server 2005 again. This threw me the following exception: Error 1603 installing microsoft sql server setup support files Searching on Google I found this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916760 but it's not my case actually. Any help will be appreciated. I really need this to continue working.

• Is it possible to use DLR in a .NET 3.5 website project?

I'm using version .92 from the Codeplex repository and my solution is a .NET 3.5 website; and I'm having conflicts between the System.Core and Microsoft.Scripting.ExtenstionAttribute .dll's. Error = { Description: "'ExtensionAttribute' is ambiguous in the namespace 'System.Runtime.CompilerServices'.", File: "InternalXmlHelper.vb" } At this time I cannot upgrade to .NET 4.0 and make significant use of the .net 3.5 features (so downgrading is not an option). • Capturing the contents of <select>

  I'm trying to use a regular expression to capture the contents of all option values inside an HTML select element For example, in: <select name="test"> <option value="blah">one</option> <option value="mehh">two</option> <option value="rawr">three</option> </select> I'd like to capture one two and three into an array.   I want to build a page for end users to visit (in our MPLS Network) and it show the following information in regards to them: Computer Name OS Disk Space Memory IP Address Active Directory User Name Password Expiration Time (As defined by Global Policy) Maybe a few other things such as Trend Micro Office current version vs. their version, # of MS Updates needed (we utilize WSUS), and a few other things in the future. My question is how would I pull this information from the user when they visit the page? What is the proper function for this? Anyone have examples they wish to share for me to learn by if possible? • Catch $.getJSON error

  I've been trying to figure this out for hours. I have a DYNAMIC youtube search, which I use Youtube's JSON api for. It works usually, but there are times that it won't find anything. Is there a way to figure out if it finds nothing, and then end the function because otherwise it stops the entire code. I tried jsonp, but that didn't seem to be correct. Somewhere I read that error catching is built into the newest jQuery getJSON, but I couldn't find it. The code is really tedious so I'd rather not post it unless it comes to that. • what causes the .NET SerialPort class DataReceived event to fire?

  I understand from the MSDN docs that the event DataReceived will not necessarily fire once per byte. But does anyone know what exactly is the mechanism that causes the event to fire? Does the receipt of each byte restart a timer that has to reach, say 10 ms between bytes, before the event fires? I ask because I'm trying to write an app that reads XML data coming in from a serial port. Because my laptop has no serial ports, I use a virtual serial port emulator. (I know, I know--I can't do anything about it ATM). When I pass data through the emulated port to my app, the event fires once for each XML record (about 1500 bytes). Perfect. But when a colleague at another office tries it with two computers connected by an actual cable, the DataReceived event fires repeatedly, after every 10 or so bytes of XML, which totally throws off the app.

Here's my test string: <div id="div0" class="myclass">here's some text that may include whitespace</div><div id="div1" class="myclass"> and some more here </div> And here's my regex based on the aforementioned entry: <div[^>]*class="myclass">[^~]*?<\/div> Note that I need to match the first instance of <div /> with class of "myclass." • How to use libraries compiled with MingW in MSVC?

  Hello, I have compiled several libraries with MingW/MSYS... the generated static libraries are always .a files. When I try to link the library with a MSVC project, Visual Studio throws 'unresolved external symbols' ... It means that the .a static library is incompatible with MS C++ Linker. I presume it has to be converted to a MSVC compatible .lib file. Either .a and .lib are just AR archives of .o or .obj files, so is there any way how to use MingW compiled libs in a MSVC project? Or do I have to compile/link everything just in one compiler/linker - MSVC only/MingW only? The MingW compiler is said to be compatible with MSVC. I read a few threads about this topic, but they mostly say that renaming the file to .lib should do the work, but it unfortunately doesn't work for me. Thanks for any advice.

• Synclock a section of code while waiting for ShowDialog to return

  I'm having trouble working out how to lock my application out of a section of code while it waits for a response from an external program. I've used Synclock on a section of code with the Me object in the expression. In this Synclock I call an overridden ShowDialog method of a dialog box, which has a timeout parameter, but does return the value from the underlying ShowDialog function call ,once the timer is setup. Works like this. SyncLock Me Dim frmDlgWithTimeout As New frmDlgWithTimeout ' dialog box with overridden ShowDialog ' Dim res As DialogResult = frmDlgWithTimeout.ShowDialog(10 * 1000) ' 10 sec timeout ' End SyncLock Now, external programs may raise events that bring my application to this Synclock but it doesn't prevent it from entering it, even though the ShowDialog function hasn't returned a value (and hence what I thought would keep the section of code locked). There is only one instance of the object that is used for lock in the program. Your help is greatly appreciated.

• Visual Studio bug ~ quick find [CONFIRMED]

  In Visual Studio 2010 Pro (Version 10.0.30319.1 RTMRel), I noticed tonight that for some reason I kept getting a wider window for quick find, but thought I was losing my mind. So I exited, restarted, etc to verify. Here's my repro steps Open existing project (I don't think it matters which one) Press ctrlf and give it something to search for (?) in "current document" Press enter Press ctrlf Press enter goto 4 Can you reproduce a slowly expanding quick find window? Do I have some sort of wacky bugged out system? I'ld obviously like to submit a bug report to MS if this is indeed a viable repro.
