  • "bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off” error when running shellcode"

    - by Nosrettap
I'm writing shellcode to exploit a buffer overflow vulnerability on a server. To do so I have port binding shellcode that I send to the server and then I run (from a linux terminal) the command telnet serverAdress 4444 where 4444 is the port which I have opened up. The hope is that I will receive a shell back that I can use to execute commands. However, I always end up with the command bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off I can't change any of the server code, and I believe the shellcode is correct because I got it from this website (http://www.tsirogiannis.com/exploits-vulnerabilities-videos-papers-shellcode/linuxx86-port-binding-shellcode-xor-encoded-152-bytes/). From my research, it appears that this may have to do with the mode that my terminal is running in (something called interactive mode...or something like that). All computers involved are linux machines and the machine that I am on is running the latest version of Ubuntu. Any ideas what this job control error means and how I can fix it?

  • What is the secure way to isolate ftp server users on unix?

    - by djs
I've read documentation for various ftp daemons and various long threads about the security implications of using a chroot environment for an ftp server when giving users write access. If you read the vsftpd documentation, in particular, it implies that using chroot_local_user is a security hazard, while not using it is not. There seems to be no coverage of the implications of allowing the user access to the entire filesystem (as permitted by their user and group membership), nor to the confusion this can create. So, I'd like to understand what is the correct method to use in practice. Should an ftp server with authenticated write-access users provide a non-chroot environment, a chroot environment, or some other option? Given that Windows ftp daemons don't have the option to use chroot, they need to implement isolation otherwise. Do any unix ftp daemons do something similar?

  • MVC and delegation

    - by timjver
I am a beginning iOS programmer and use the Model-View-Controller model as a design pattern: my model doesn't know anything about my view (in order to make it compatible with any view), my view doesn't know anything about my model so they interact via my controller. A very usual way for a view to interact with the controller is through delegation: when the user interacts with the app, my view will notify my controller, which can call some methods of my model and update my view, if necessary. However, would it make sense to also make my controller the delegate of my model? I'm not convinced this is the way to go. It could be handy for my model to notify my controller of some process being finished, for example, or to ask for extra input of the user if it doesn't have enough information to complete the task. The downside of this, though, is that my controller would be the delegate for both my controller and my model, so there wouldn't be really a proper way to notify my model of changes in my view, and vice versa. (correct me if I'm wrong.) Conclusion: I don't really think it's a good idea to to have my controller to be the delegate of my model, but just being the delegate of my view would be fine. Is this the way most MVC models handle? Or is there a way to have the controller be the delegate of both the controller and the model, with proper communication between them? Like I said, I'm a beginner, so I want to do such stuff the right way immediately, rather than spending loads of hours on models that won't work anyway. :)

  • Why my browsers display XML files as blank pages?

    - by n1313
Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please? UPD: example file: http://lj.lain.ru/3/1273657698603.sample.xml Also I've noticed that somehow all of the browsers on the machine are now acting the same, so I'm changing the question accordingly

  • dhcp client service won't start

    - by xyious
I have a Laptop with 2 network interfaces and neither will get an IP address through dhcp. I found out that the dhcp client service didn't start. Upon manually starting it gives the error 2: File not found. I have checked that the files were there (both svchost and dhcpcore .dll), the local service account has read access to the system32 folder, the path in the registry is also correct and I can access the file. I have tried to netsh winsock reset and ip reset all. I have even added the local service account to the administrators group. sfc /scannow also came up clean. I have no idea what else I can try. Any suggestions are welcome. (side note it's a windows 7 32 bit, atheros wlan, deinstalled avira before any of the other troubleshooting)

  • Sharepoint managed Properties

On the 'Advanced Search Page', it is added as a property and searchable, however it only returns a some matching records (if any). I manually created an entry, ran the crawl and was able to search for it. I edited an existing entry, ran the crawl (full and incremental), and it still only returned the manually entered entry. If I entered the search term in the Search box directly "asynop:fatigue", then all the correct results appear. Why is this happening? And could it please stop?

  • Is there a proven concept to website reverse certificate authentication?

    - by Tom
We're looking at exposing some of our internal application data externally via a website. The actual details of the website aren't that interesting, it'll be built using ASP.NET/IIS etc, that might be relevant. With this, I'm essentially I'm looking for a mechanism to authenticate users viewing my website. This sounds trivial, a username/password is typically fine, but I want more. Now I've read plenty about SSL/x.509 to realise that the CA determines that we're alright, and that the user can trust us. But I want to trust the user, I want the user to be rejected if they don't have the correct credentials. I've seen a system for online banking whereby the bank issues a certificate which gets installed on the users' computer (it was actually smartcard based). If the website can't discover/utilise the key-pair then you are immediately rejected! This is brutal, but necessary. Is there a mechanism where I can do the following: Generate a certificate for a user Issue the certificate for them to install, it can be installed on 1 machine If their certificate is not accessible, they are denied all access A standard username/password scheme is then used after that SSL employed using their certificate once they're "in" This really must already exist, please point me in the right direction! Thanks for your help :)

  • Restoring exchange 2003 from a backup

    - by user64204
Hi all, I'm restoring an Exchange server from a backup: [1] the backup was created on 19/12/2010 [2] the server kept running until 20/12/2010 [3] we're restoring the server today 21/12/2010 with the backup from [1] My understanding is that when the server comes back: [4] whatever is in users' inbox since [1] will be deleted. [5] whatever is in users' sent box since [2] should be re-sent. [6] As a safety measure we've moved all emails sent/received between [1] and [3] to .PST files. Questions: -are [4] & [5] statements correct? -is there any way to move back emails from the PST file [6] to the current inbox/sent folders so that Exchange takes these emails into account (instead of deleting them)? -what happens to the Calendar items that were added after [1], is there any way to back those up as well if needed? Many thanks

  • Something is spamming from my hMail server - how can I deal with this?

    - by joshcomley
My Windows 2008 server is attempting to send out a lot of spam, I've just discovered, and I'm not sure how to see where the compromise is. For example: has someone hacked an account? Has someone hacked the server? Is there a virus on the server? What can I do to investigate this? Edit Thanks for the replies so far. I am running hMail server, and have spent so long investigating the correct configuration but still I end up with these emails being sent. Here is a screenshot of my Internet IP range settings on the server: (let me know what else I can provide to help)

  • A* PathFinding Not Consistent

    - by RedShft
I just started trying to implement a basic A* algorithm in my 2D tile based game. All of the nodes are tiles on the map, represented by a struct. I believe I understand A* on paper, as I've gone through some pseudo code, but I'm running into problems with the actual implementation. I've double and tripled checked my node graph, and it is correct, so I believe the issue to be with my algorithm. This issue is, that with the enemy still, and the player moving around, the path finding function will write "No Path" an astounding amount of times and only every so often write "Path Found". Which seems like its inconsistent. This is the node struct for reference: struct Node { bool walkable; //Whether this node is blocked or open vect2 position; //The tile's position on the map in pixels int xIndex, yIndex; //The index values of the tile in the array Node*[4] connections; //An array of pointers to nodes this current node connects to Node* parent; int gScore; int hScore; int fScore; } Here is the rest: http://pastebin.com/cCHfqKTY This is my first attempt at A* so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Exceptions from automongobackup, yet script completes

    - by chakram88
I am using automongobackup to, well, automate the backups of mongodb. output from the script (to STDERR) has the following exceptions (but the backup completes, and the dump files are created) ###### WARNING ###### STDERR written to during mongodump execution. The backup probably succeeded, as mongodump sometimes writes to STDERR, but you may wish to scan the error log below: exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: HostAndPort: bad port # exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed exception: connect failed I know that the Host & Port are correct. If I run mongodump --host=127.0.0.1:27017 --journal (which is the effective command from automongobackup based on the options set and my reading of the src code) everything runs clean without any error reporting and the dump files are created as expected. Why would automongobackup report connection errors, even tho it does create the dump files, yet a straight call to mongodump does not? Debian 6.0 Lenny (from Linode image: Latest 3.2 (3.2.1-x86_64-linode23)) AutoMongoBackup VER 0.9 mongodb v 2.0.2

  • PHP errors not being displayed

    - by Mike
I'm using PHP with Apache on Ubuntu 12.10. Errors are not being displayed to the browser for some reason and I can't figure it out. I have the following in my php.ini file: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED display_errors = On display_startup_errors = On log_errors = On I am also positive that I have edited the correct ini file by verifying it with php_ini_loaded_file(). I can also verify that the values are correctly set by doing the following in my script: echo ini_get("display_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("display_startup_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("log_errors"); // Outputs 1 echo ini_get("error_reporting"); // Outputs -1 I have tried what seems like every possible combination of these settings (and restarting Apache after each change) and it is just not outputting errors. I am also not using ini_set anywhere in the script. It is being set only from the ini file. Any ideas why errors aren't being displayed?

  • I tried installing Ubuntu 10.04 and I got this message - any ideas on what to do?

    - by vette982
No root file system defined. Please correct this from the partition menu. This message shows up when I first boot into Ubuntu after the installation. I installed it by mounting the ISO with Daemon Tools, and I just did the default Wubi installation. I keep reading everywhere that I need to choose my installation directory, but I don't get any option to do that. These are all the options I get for installation directory. I have a C and D partition on my drive, and I tried installing it on both and no luck either way. Any ideas?

  • Issues implementing arcball viewer

    - by Pris
My scene has a simple cube, and a camera built with the lookAt function (I'm using OpenGL). The scene renders fine, and I'm sure I have my model/view/projection matrices set up correctly. Now I'm trying to implement arcball rotation for my camera, but I'm having some trouble. I've got it down to calculating the angle/axis rotation for a virtual sphere in normalized screen coordinates. That means when I move my mouse left to right, I get an angle around the Y axis... and moving my mouse up/down will get me an angle about X. I'm not sure where to go from here -- what do I need to do with my axis so I can apply the angle to simulate camera rotation about its viewpoint? If I try directly applying the axis/angle rotation the camera/view transform I get what you'd expect. The view is rotated about the world axes which the mouse moving over the virtual sphere on the screen corresponds to. So if I move the mouse up/down the view rotates about the world's X axis (what I get reminds me of a first-person view)... but this isn't what I want. I think I need the axis I get to be transformed so it passes through the camera viewpoint and is oriented correct in reference to the camera... but I don't know if that's right or how to do that.

  • Checking validation of entries in a Sudoku game written in Java

    - by Mico0
I'm building a simple Sudoku game in Java which is based on a matrix (an array[9][9]) and I need to validate my board state according to these rules: all rows have 1-9 digits all columns have 1-9 digits. each 3x3 grid has 1-9 digits. This function should be efficient as possible for example if first case is not valid I believe there's no need to check other cases and so on (correct me if I'm wrong). When I tried doing this I had a conflict. Should I do one large for loop and inside check columns and row (in two other loops) or should I do each test separately and verify every case by it's own? (Please don't suggest too advanced solutions with other class/object helpers.) This is what I thought about: Main validating function (which I want pretty clean): public boolean testBoard() { boolean isBoardValid = false; if (validRows()) { if (validColumns()) { if (validCube()) { isBoardValid = true; } } } return isBoardValid; } Different methods to do the specific test such as: private boolean validRows() { int rowsDigitsCount = 0; for (int num = 1; num <= 9; num++) { boolean foundDigit = false; for (int row = 0; (row < board.length) && (!foundDigit); row++) { for (int col = 0; col < board[row].length; col++) { if (board[row][col] == num) { rowsDigitsCount++; foundDigit = true; break; } } } } return rowsDigitsCount == 9 ? true : false; } I don't know if I should keep doing tests separately because it looks like I'm duplicating my code.

  • Will 5 Terabyte NAS drive be compatible with Windows XP SP3 32 bit?

    - by TrevorBoydSmith
(NOTE: The operating system (in this case Windows XP SP3 32 bit) we are using is not a choice.) I am trying to setup a short term storage device. First, I found a large 5 Terabyte NAS drive that would IMO fulfill my storage requirements. Second, I also found that Windows XP seems to have a hard drive size limit (see 'Is there a limit to the size of a hard drive for Windows XP pre-SP1?'): XP should handle up to 2 TB per volume after the service packs are applied. You are correct. There was a 137gb limit on the orginal pre service pack windows xp. This was addressed/fixed in SP1. My question is, will my Windows XP SP3 32 bit machine see the 5 Terabyte NAS and be able to read/write properly to the NAS drive?

  • Windows clients cannot access machine running DHCP server

    - by science9712
I'm trying to setup a small LAN, using an Ethernet switch, an Arch Linux server, and around 10 Windows XP machines. This network has no outside connections. The Arch machine has a self configured ip address (configured with ip addr add 192.168.0.1 dev eth0), and acts as a DHCP server(using dhcpd). This portion works great, windows clients get IP addresses, the correct gateway settings, perfect. However, the clients cannot connect to each other, or to the dhcp server. When I run ping 192.168.0.1 on any client, I get no response, same happens if I try to ping any other client. On the gateway machine, I can't ping any of the clients either. Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Redirecting email from from domain registrar to hosting comapny mailbox

    - by jmoreno
I have the domain example.com registered with company A I have the hosting with company B (ServerGrove) Company A offers me simple parking, and company B offers me mailbox service. What I would like is to use the hosting company mail service. How do I configure the DNS records in company A to be forwarded to company B mailbox? I think I have to add a MX record to company A's configuration, and then the same in company B's DNS records, is this correct? I think I'm mixing concepts, and cannot see a clear solution, I've tried several configurations but all failed. Any help would be appreciated. Regards.

  • How does Windows 7 determine that a system was not shut doen correctly (Kernel-Pwer Event ID 41)

    - by Erik
I have a strange situation that Windows 7 thinks it was not shut down correctly, and gives me a warning in the system event log like this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504/de What the KB-article does not tell is how Windows actually determines that situation. Does it parse its own system event log after reboot? Or where does it get that information from? I am currently investigating an issue where I believe the system fails to write the system event log correctly (it stops having entries, although other logs like the application event log still have entries), and after a reboot, Windows thinks it has not been shut doen correctly. Does anybody have any experience with this? ANd can you confrim that Windows determines the previous correct system shutdown by parsing its own system event log on startup?

  • Wrong Connection-specific DNS Suffix

    - by mydoghasworms
I am on a Windows network with a Windows 7 machine. For some strange reason, when I run ipconfig, I see that I have the wrong DNS suffix for my network adapters, e.g. def.companyname.com as oppsed to abc.companyname.com. My colleagues next to me, who are on the same network, have the correct suffix. Where does the problem originate, and is it something I can fix on my machine (and if so, how?), or is this something a network administrator must resolve? (I did ipconfig /release and /renew, but that did not help).

  • Power outage during disk wipe. What do I do now?

    - by Mark Trexler
I was using Roadkil Diskwipe on an external hard drive and the power went out. I had removed it from any outlet connection by the time power was restored to prevent power-spike damage (it's on a surge protector, but I didn't want to rely on that). My question is, where do I go from here? Obviously I don't care about preserving any data currently on it, I just want to make sure the drive itself is not terminally damaged. I'm running chkdsk (full), but I don't know if that's the correct step to assessing any damage. If it makes any difference, the hard drive was unallocated at the time of the outage, as Diskwipe requires that for it to run. Also, could something like this cause latent problems with the drive itself (i.e. serious issues that I won't be aware of when testing it now). I'd appreciate any program recommendations if chkdsk is not the most appropriate diagnostic route. Thank you.

  • What''s the "earliest" place one can set an environment variable during Linux boot process?

    - by amn
I know I can set a variable in a shell startup file, but the thing is, I am trying to set up a POSIX-compatible environment, and a POSIX shell does not parse any startup files other than the one specified by the environment variable ENV. This presents a problem - currently my login starts the shell as bash, which I will try to replace with sh so Bash runs as POSIX shell - however then it will not parse the default startup files and I need ENV set to specify these. Which means as far as I understand that I need to specify ENV before login starts the shell, correct? Now, how would I do that? I hope my question is clear, if not I will gladly redact it.
