• Partitions for dual boot install with Windows

  Following is the layout of the current partitions of my single hard drive viewed from Windows 7: C: has Windows 7 system files and my personal data; Q: for Lenovo recovery; SYSTEM_DRV: for Windows boot files; My goals are: to create another partition D: for my personal data, and dedicate C: for Windows system files and applications only. to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. D: will be shared between the two OSes. My questions are: Is it correct that the free space generated from shrinking C: will only be able to create an extended partition, since there are already 3 primary partitions? So must D: be one logical partition on the extended partition, just as the partitions for Ubuntu will be? Will this be bad sometime? If yes, other better solutions? What are the good utilities to accomplish the partition tasks? Can Ubuntu installer solely handle them? Or better to have some of the jobs done in Windows with some recommended softwares? • After a week of smooth running, my Dell t310 servername reverted to the service tag and screwed everything up!

  Has this happened to anyone else? Began having a tremedous amount of problems with our brand new Dell SBS 2011 T310 server and after nearly 15 hours will Dell support, they determined that the server name hade reverted to DXXXXXXXX ("D: + the service tag). The Dell tech said that this was a major major problem. I'm the only person with any access to the machine and I didn't attempt to change the server name. The tech said it didn't look as if anyone had hacked the box but something had replaced "OurCompanyServer" with "DXX12XX" It would seem to me, simply changing the server name back to what I originally had would correct the problem, but the Dell tech said it wasn't that easy. Anyone encounter this?

• Recovered video files won't play

  I have an SD card with pictures and video which malfunctioned. I was able to recover the files with Photorec. The pictures are OK, but wen I try to open the vide files (*.mov extension) in get the following errors when I try to open them in the following programs Windows Media player: "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file" Quicktime: "Error -2048: Couldn't open the file because it is not a file that QuickTime understands" VLC: it shows the first frame of the video and the sound is just white noise The filesizes look correct so I presume the data is still in there. Is there any way to fix these recovered video files?

• Replacing old server with new but different hostname & same IP

  We have an old server 2000 and lots of users point to it by hostname and by its IP e.g \\server1, we have a new server 2008 R2 with new name serverlocation1 All folders and data have been sync'toy'd from the old server1 across to serverlocation1 each evening, the new server tree is exactly the same on the new server and all perms are correct. We need to make the new server the same IP as the old server1 as too many people access it directly via IP, and to ensure file and folder paths stay ok, anything \\server1\folder\file needs to go to \\newserverlocation1\folder\file etc I can change the old server1 name to server1-old & change IP and assign the old IP to the new server, but how do I force anything coming in for \\server1 to go to the new server and ensure anything referenced to the old server goes onto the new server ? I can CNAME but I need the new server to have the IP of the previous server so not sure if its straight forward etc..... point server1 to newserverlocation1 Then probably change DNS so that the OLD IP points to new hostname..... Any clarification appreciated.

• Many ISP's is block port 25, how do I choose an alternative port?

  I am building an application that will be acting as a combined MUA/MTA on different networks. However, many of the networks are with ISP's that block port 25 for SMTP. Therefore I would also like to open up a secondary port so that some of the installs can communicate on that if port 25 is closed. How do I choose a second port? I know some people use port 26 or port 2525. What is the correct way to choose a port that won't interfere with existing software?

• Keyboard not working 100% after Ubuntu 13.10 upgrade

  If this has already been asked, my apologies, I did not find it before writing this. So please do point me to the correct page. Anyway, I have this weird issue on my laptop right now. The keyboard is not functioning 100%. This means, I can type my login details to get into Ubuntu. I can type something on Dash. But other than this (on the desktop), no output from the keyboard when using all the other apps - as in I start to type and nothing comes out. The surprising thing is that when I shift to Guest session, the keyboard functions normally. When I shift to another TTY, like Alt+F5, keyboard works normally. This is the first time I've encountered this so far in my use of Linux. Keyboards normally never fail on any of the desktop environments I've used over the years. Any ideas what's happening? Could be the config files on my home is too messy already. I've upgraded this from 11.10 to 13.04, then now 13.10 without a re-install. Works fine so far, until now that I can't do much without a keyboard. Thanks in advance! P.S. Mouse and touchpad works fine.

• How can I remap control+e to escape+control+e in iTerm2?

  I have set up a few custom keyboard shortcuts in iTerm2 to easily move the cursor around with the arrow keys, but now I'd like to remap control+e to be escape, control+e because bash 4.2 no longer auto-expands variables using the tab key. I know I've done the first part correctly in choosing the keyboard shortcut to remap, but I don't understand how to look up the correct escape sequence (or hex codes) to send in the bottom section: I reference they keyboard codes but that wasn't much help. How can I remap this, and how can I look up the codes in the future? (No luck with Google) Update @db - thanks. • How can I further improve the quality of my home videos?

  So now that I have found out how to deinterlace my videos, I am wondering if there is other software out there that can further help improve the quality of my videos. Some other problems I have noticed is when you move the camera side to side very quickly you can notice tearing in the the picture. That is the top half of the frame doesn't line up with the bottom half, it appears that the bottom half is shifted to the right or left depending on which way the camera is moving. Shaky camera hand is also a problem in some videos. I don't expect any software to be able to correct these problems 100%, especially the shaky hand. I know that using a tripod or something of the sorts is the best way to prevent the shakes, but for preexsiting videos what are the best solutions I can use?

• Simple C: atof giving wrong value [migrated]

  I have a program that reads input from a singe line(string obviously) and organizes it into arrays. The problem I have is that at one point the program reads two different values and returns the first one twice. • Cannot get script to run at startup (tried all the simple answers)

  I have Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 LTS running great on an older Acer desktop. I want to use this machine as an in-home server for hosting Minecraft. The command to start the Minecraft server is java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui and that works great when I cd into the correct directory and execute the above. I created a script to do this: #!/bin/bash cd /home/myuser/minecraft-server1 java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui & cd /home/myuser/minecraft-server2 java -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar nogui & exit 0 I made this .sh file executable, and it too runs great when I start it manually from the terminal. The problem I'm having is getting these to execute at startup. I have my user account on this machine to auto login. I have tried the following: Adding the following to "Startup Applications" : sh /home/myuser/myscript.sh (Nothing happens on reboot) Adding the same to /etc/rc.local (Nothing happens on reboot). I even tested this one by running /etc/rc.local from the terminal, and it executed great. Just not at boot/auto login Added the lines from the script directly to rc.local (Nothing happens on reboot). I can't help but think that there's something I'm missing. The script executes great when run manually, but will not run at boot/auto login. Many thanks in advance.

• Bayesian content filter for vbulletin [on hold]

  I've been tasked with coming up with a tool to automatically flag some posts for moderator attention on a large vbulletin forum. It's not spam per se, but the task has a lot in common with the sort of handling that might be done by a spam protection plugin (a mod in vbulletin speak). There's only so much I can say, but the task does not involve bad users, so much as particular kinds of posts which the moderators need to be aware of. Filtering out user registrations and links is therefore not useful, and we are talking about posts by real human users. What I'm looking for is an existing bayesian classification plugin, or something that I can study to get an understanding of how to do the vbulletin side of the interface in order to build such a thing. Ie I'd need ways for moderators to list flagged posts, and to correct the classification of posts which have been mis-classified. Ideally I want a 3 way split with an "unsure" category in order to reduce what has to be reviewed to find any mis-classifications. Any pointers? I've searched around a bit, and so far what I've found has been more or less entirely targetted at intervening in sign-ups (mostly using stopforumspam), captchas, and use of external services like akismet which are spam specific. • Approaches for a clickable map of nations (such as a Risk game) with Spritekit

  I would like to create a political map where each country is clickable by tapping but I'm not sure the best way to determine which nation was selected. Imagine Risk where each country can be individually clicked to bring up additional information. My current approach is to make a sprite for each nation where every image is the size of the screen The images are mostly transparent except for the country, that way when all of the images are displayed the countries are in the correct place relative to one another. To determine if a click occurs on an individual country I look to see if the tapped location is a non transparent pixel and check that the sprite's name is one of the countries. Additionally the nation needs to glow or something when tapped as an indicator, however my current solution is yet another sprite that is displayed. This seems like a terrible approach and I was wondering what other solutions might achieve the same results. I'm pretty new to SpriteKit so I'm not entirely sure. The other idea I had was creating a single texture where each country is a different shade of gray, then when I get the tap location I do a lookup on the color at that location and get the corresponding country. However, I'm not sure how to create a hilight or glowing country effect with that method.

• MySQL returning slow queries with result sets bigger than 30 rows

  When ever I run a query that exceeds 30 queries the time for the query to run goes from less than a second to over 10 seconds to get data. Example I run a query to return 29 rows, it takes .1 seconds, I run a query to return 31 rows it takes 11.2 seconds. I am running mySQL on Windows 2008 Server Dual Core 2.6Ghz with 3GB of Memory. The machine doesn't run anything else. It does have a instance of MSSQL running on the server but that does not get used at all. This only happens via PHP right now, If I manually run the query on the server it returns it in less than a second. The queries are not complicated either I have included one below: SELECT Name, Value FROM `bis_co`.`departments` LIMIT 31 What would be causing this issue and how can I correct this? Am I missing a configuration setting in MySQL or something. Thanks

• Why do VMs need to be "stack machines" or "register machines" etc.?

  (This is an extremely newbie-ish question). I've been studying a little about Virtual Machines. Turns out a lot of them are designed very similarly to physical or theoretical computers. I read that the JVM for example, is a 'stack machine'. What that means (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that it stores all of it's 'temporary memory' on a stack, and makes operations on this stack for all of it's opcodes. For example, the source code 2 + 3 will be translated to bytecode similar to: push 2 push 3 add My question is this: JVMs are probably written using C/C++ and such. If so, why doesn't the JVM execute the following C code: 2 + 3..? I mean, why does it need a stack, or in other VMs 'registers' - like in a physical computer? The underlying physical CPU takes care of all of this. Why don't VM writers simply execute the interpreted bytecode with 'usual' instructions in the language the VM is programmed with? Why do VMs need to emulate hardware, when the actual hardware already does this for us? Again, very newbie-ish questions. Thanks for your help

• monitor a folder and send files via ftp to clients

  I am looking for software that will monitor a specific folder and when a file is created in it send that file off via ftp to a client associated with that folder by the software. I have tried software such as smart FTP and cute FTP and they don't seem to monitor folders very consistently. Some of the options with them were to write scripts to delete duplicated files from the transfer queue. I really don't want to have to write scripts for software I purchase. I am not opposed to needing scripting or writing it but I feel I shouldn't have to write scripting to make there software properly do some thing it says it does out of the box. I am currently trying to do this on a Windows XP box though running on a Server 2003 is an option if it would make things easier. I really just want pointed in the correct direction this is all fairly foreign to me

• VPN pre-shared key problems

  I have two vpns set up on a Symantec Gateway Security 320. VPN 1 goes to a Symantec Firewall/VPN 100 to another clinic of ours and every hour they lose connectivity and the error log on the Firewall/VPN100 shows an invalid pre-shared key error, although, both devices show the same pre-shared key entered. VPN 2 goes to our software vendor to use an additional part of our program. I am unable to ping the remote address and so is the other company, but my VPN status shows it is connected. They have told me the pre-shared key seemed to be automatically trying to resubmit itself as if it were incorrect, about every hour even though it is correct. They also told me port80 traffic was closed but I show the HTTP service using 80 redirected to 80 in my firewall settings. Please help.

  I have just bought 60 meters of CAT6e cables, sold as "4 pair UTP RJ45". I have looked at various videos on Youtube but I cannot determine the correct wiring. all the colors of the cable I saw there are different from mine. Mine is untwisted, and it is not color coded. I have 8 pin connectors all of a single color. How should I wire this cable? EDIT THE PACKAGE DOES SAY TWISTED but they are not (twisted).

• Mac OS X 10.6 executable not found without full path

  I just installed Apache via MacPorts. It seems that my Mac was absolutely confused about which version of the Apache executables to run. After moving the Apache executables that ship with the Mac to a directory that is not listed in the PATH variable, trying to run the httpd built by MacPorts fails even though the correct directory (/opt/local/apache2/bin) is listed in the PATH variable. If I navigate to the directory /opt/local/apache2/bin and type the command httpd I still get the error message -bash: httpd: command not found If I type the command with the full path /opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd it works fine. I've run the command alias to see if something was clashing but the only thing listed is: alias wget='curl -O' How do I find what is intercepting the command and preventing the executable being found in the directory, even when I'm inside the same directory? By the way, the httpd file is executable: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root admin 442496 9 May 2012 httpd

• How to migrate Lotus Notes Mail in database to Exchange public folder?

  I need to migrate a Lotus Notes Mail database to Exchange. In the past, Users get mails in their Notes mail accounts and sort them manually by drag and drop in a specific folder structure in a seperate Notes mail database. This should be mapped to Exchange. I considered using outlook and a sharepoint Library mapped to outlook, but Outlook does not support drag and drop from the mail account to a standard doclib and the discussion libs do not support folders. So I think it's the easiest way to use an Exchange public folder instead of a sharepoint lib, which should work as in Notes (correct me if I'm wrong). But how I do migrate the old Notes db to the public folder including all subfolders? Thank you!

• Safari 7 SSL error if using IP-adress

  I have created my own CA for internal usage and set the root certificate to trustworthy on my machines. With this CA I signed the SSL-certificates for my internal servers. I only address them with their IP and so I used the servers' IP as certificate name. If i connect to the Servers with Chrome or mobile Safari it works without problems, but if I use Safari 7 under Mavericks (on the same machine with the same keychain) i get the following error: "The certificate is not valid (host name mismatch)". I double checked that I entered the correct IP ("https://192.168.2.130"), but I always get the same error. Do I need to enter a different name for the certificate or is it just that Safari doesn't support SSL certificates for IPs? • Process vsserv.exe attempts connection to unknown host (clients.your-server.de)

  from past few day I notice a new connection is being made from my system, I discovered it within the outpost firewall, it is blocked by default with the reason Block Transit Packets in the image above you can see that the process vsserv.exe is attempting a connection to static.88-198-155-41.clients.your-server.de I tried to search on google but could not find any relevant info, however this link http://www.webmasterworld.com/search_engine_spiders/3963600.htm says that your-server.de hosts bad bots. I am bit concerned if something is not correct. Could you help me understand the same?

• Set Wordpress Homepage

  I am currently setting up a simple Wordpress website. I am attempting to set a specific page as the Static Home page. I have read wordpress documentation on setting the homepage, and upon load, it directs to the correct page, but does not replace the previous home page. Please see here: http://tinypic.com/r/33cxiip/5 The home page is located underneath the contact us menu. Ideally I would like it under the Home tab. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Is possible to load Windows 7 from the eSATA drive, even if it's not supported in BIOS?

  I'm using a laptop which has eSATA connection. I would like to install Windows 7 on the external disk (to have it completely separated from the OS on the internal hdd). According to the manufacturer, booting from eSATA drive won't be possible. I've checked the BIOS settings and it appears to be correct - eSATA is not even listed in the boot sequence. I'm wondering if there can be any workaround to that limitation, for example starting a custom bootloader on the USB pendrive, just to boot Windows 7 on the eSATA drive.
