• How can I set my bootloader to load my primary (C:) partition?

  I created 4 partitions and want to use them to have seperate Windows XP, Windows 7, (possibly) Windows Vista installations, and "WinDummy" (to test applications in Vista, XP or another OS). I used Norton Ghost to install an OS to the drive in about 3 minutes. My problem is that I installed the spare first on the 4th partition, then Windows 7 on the second. I tried to set the bootloader (with easybcd) to use the first partition - but it doesn't want to. Heres my debug screen on easybcd As you can see, the device is set to H and i cant figure out how to change it. I can make my bootloader use Windows 7 first, but I can't make it use my C: install of XP instead of my spare H:. How would I fix this?   I've got a windows 7 laptop that BSOD with a Service Exception Error when I connect to a wireless network. It also does it when it's just sitting still doing nothing. • How can I access a webDAV folder as a UNC share?

  first of all I am just getting to know about webDAV and appreciate your patience. I have a virtual directory on IIS 6 (windows 2003) that is based on a network share on a file server different from web server. something like www.mysite.com/myreports where myreport is based on \myfileserver\reports. I have been asked by network folks to not use the UNC path like that for security reason and try to explore using webDAV. What I have been told is webDAV can give me a UNC path without requiring to open the ports required for a file server UNC path. Then I can use the new UNC path to map my virtual directory and my asp.net code will not require any change. Help: Being new to webDAV, I did some research over the web. I now can create a web folder in fileserver. I put IIS on file server as well. I can browse the content as http:://fileserver/mywebDAVreports which is based on reports folder. But I don't know how to get a UNC for this web folder to be able to map my virtual directory on web server. I appreciate any help on this. Regards, Amar

• apache pointing to the wrong version of python on ubuntu how do I change?

  I am setting up a flask application on and Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS EC2 instance and everything seemed to be working well (i.e. I could get to the webpage via the publicly available url) until I tried to import a module (e.g. numpy) and realised the apache python differs from the one I used to compile the mod_wsgi and also the one I am using I am running apache2. • try to attach to a database file but can't browse folder which contains the file

  I am trying to attach to database file (*.mdf, *.ldf) that I placed in the same folder as all my other SQL Server databases. I begin the attach by attempting to browse to the folder which contains the db files as well as all of my active database files. I select "attach Database" and click the "Add" button to add a database to the list of databases to attach to. When I do so, I get this error: TITLE: Locate Database Files - BESI-CHAD ------------------------------ D:\SQLdata\MSSQL10_50.SQLBESI\MSSQL\DATA Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The path is correct and, as I mentioned, it contains all of my other database files so I wouldn't think that permissions should be an issue, but here is what I see for that folder: Any idea why I cannot browse to that folder and attach to the db files that I have place there?

  I'm looking for a reliable backup solution on Windows, something with a feature set similar to Yadis. I've been using CrashPlan for 2 months, but their software lost more than 1TB of my data, that's why I'm looking for alternatives. Requirements: Real-time folder-to-folder backup: I don't need online features, I want to use this to duplicate my files between my local disks. Versioning support: Should be able to choose how many versions to keep of the files. Plain backup: I'd like to be able to open the backup without special software. No proprietary file format. External disk support: Shouldn't have any problem using external disks, at least on the source side. Backup every file, even locked/system files. (Yadis fails this one) Should start automatically, and have a comfortable GUI. Should use actively maintained and/or popular software. I don't want to use discontinued products. Optional requirements: Low RAM usage I'm not really comfortable with something that eats 1GB of my RAM. Compression support Preferably ZIP, but I'm not picky about this. Any ordinary everyday format is acceptable. Freeware or Open Source Preferred, but not necessary. I can do a one-time payment within reasonable bounds. (preferably under $100) I only need Windows support, but if it works on Linux, that's a plus. I've already searched and tried lots of software, most of them failed at the plain backup, the versioning or the locked file backup requirements.

  My computer is suffering of slow-downs and I'm not surprised (it's around 6 years old). Here's what I've verified: They are not very frequent (only a couple of times a day). When they happen a single application will hang for 10-60 seconds, while the rest don't hang but also get slow. Even as it is happening, the CPU usage stays low. It happens to applications (such as text editor, firefox, skype). It never happens to some applications (such as games) which I use for hours under heavy CPU load. Also of note: The Graphics card and PSU are new (around a year). Though I have a decent amount of software installed right now, this was happening even right after I reinstalled Windows. This HDD has been through many partinioning schemes, and a few heavy operations (such as moving around 200GB of data). Because of the above, I am already 70% sure the problem is with the hard drive. Before I replace it, however, I want to rule out other less likely possibilities (such as RAM, software, or PSU). I don't have the money to replace the entire box right now, but I can easily replace one of the components. I've read several questions (such as this one) which give general guidance on troubleshooting an unknown issue, that is not what I'm looking for here. My main question is: What tests or benchmarks can I run to verify I have a problematic hard drive? I don't need to solve this problem, I am content with just making sure it's the hard drive. I could borrow a newer hard drive from a friend and see if it gets better. A positive result would rule out all other components, but it wouldn't rule out a software issue (since this new hard drive won't have any of the software I use daily). Running on Windows/Linux.

• Is it ever good to share a userid?

  On Un*x, Is it ever a good idea to have one userid that many different people log into when they do stuff? Often I'm installing software or something on a Linux or BSD system. I've developed software for 24 years now, so I know how to make the machine do what I want, but I've never had responsibility for maintaining a multi-user installation where anyone really cared about security. So my opinions feel untested. Now I'm at a company where there's a server that many people log into with a single userid and do stuff. I'm installing some software on it. It's not really a public-facing server, and is only accessible via VPN, but it's used by many people nonetheless, to run tests on custom software, things like that. It's a staging server. I'm thinking that at the very least, using a single user obscures an audit trail, and that's bad. And it's just inelegant, because people don't have their own spaces on the server. But then again, with more userids, maybe there's a greater chance that one can be compromised, allowing attackers to gain access. ?

• Using AddEncoding x-gzip .gz without actual files

  With Apache (2.2 and later) how can I achieve the following. I want to transparently compress using GZip encoding (not plain Deflate) the output when a certain file is queried with its name plus the extension .gz, where the .gz version doesn't physically exist on disk. So let's say I have a file named /path/foo.bar and no file foo.bar.gz in the folder to which the URI /path maps, how can I get Apache to serve the contents of /path/foo.bar but with AddEncoding x-gzip ... applied to the (non-existing) file? The rewrite part appears to be easy, but the problem is how to apply the encoding to a non-existent item. The other way around also seems to be simple as long as the client supports the encoding. Is the only solution really a script that does this on the fly? I'm aware of mod_deflate and mod_gzip and it is not what I'm looking for - at least not alone. In particular I need an actual GZIP file and not just a deflated stream. Now I was thinking of using mod_ext_filter, but couldn't bridge the gap between rewriting the name of the (non-existent) file.gz to file on one side and the LocationMatch on the other. Here's what I have. • USB device goes to "Unknown device" randomly

  We have a kiosk that uses a bio scanner from m2sys (usb device). It scans your palm to recognize you. Every so often, maybe 1-3 times a day, the bio scanner will become an unknown device. We are unable to see any patterns or commonalities. When we unplug and plug it back in, it becomes available again. We have custom software that uses the bio scanner's software to communicate with it. We've added a crap load of logging on everything but there doesn't seem to be any pattern of when the thing shuts off. We have these devices deployed to multiple locations (100+) and they are all seeing the issues but we can not reproduce it here, at the main office. I've evaluated the software and I don't see anything. I'm thinking it's a driver or hardware issue (but we can't reproduce the issues here in the main office) or maybe environmental interference of some sort like from scan guns, automatic doors, microwaves or something else. Any ideas would be welcome.   When I run PsExec on a remote computer, I always fall short of what I want. What I would like ideally in most situations is a) a log on an admin server where each individual log has the name of each the remote computer it was generated from (e.g. COMPNAME1.log, COMPNAME2.log, etc.) or b) a log file on each remote computer with whatever name I specify. When I try scenario (a), I use the following command. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log Problem is that it never works. All the computers just write to the log where %computername% is just the computer I execute PsExec from in my office. What I want are unique logs for each computer specific in the listofcomputers.txt that will correctly use the hostname from the remote environment variable without issue. Is that even possible? It does not seem to work for me. I tried this, and the syntax is clearly wrong. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log" PsExec just fails saying the system file cannot be found (read: syntax fail). As for scenario (b), it appears to be a variation of a similar problem. When I run a command like this, it does not work. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo %computername% >> \\server.company.tld\share\aggregated.log" Is there something I do not understand about remote path and environment variables with PsExec on the cmd.exe console (I have not even tried the dreaded PowerShell yet). I know such things work in a batch file (cmd /c \\server.company.tld\share\runthis.bat), but is there a reason it will not work when executing commands as arguments? I always need this, and can never get it!

• Remote Desktop Printing With Color

  Our ACCPACC administration software runs on an off-site dedicated hosted computer, running Windows 2003 Server with a completely different NT DOMAIN. We have many users connecting to that computer remotely to perform administrative tasks such as printing cheques, printing invoices, printing POs, packing slips and so on. Basically the setup is that we are all connecting using Remote Desktop Protocol (local computers are Mac OS.X, XP SP3, Vista and Windows 7). At our office we have a DOCUCOLOR 242 printer. When printing from the ACCPACC software, it prints to the local printer in our office. This is because we are using RDP features to connect printer ressources to the remote computer. This almost works now. I had to install the printer driver software on the remote 2003 Server for the printer sharing to work. Now, everyone is able to print black and white but color is out. NOTES: Normal users on that Windows 2003 server are running as part of a Group Policy Object to restrict what can be done. I took one of these normal users and gave him all domain administrator rights, no effect still B&W only. I took this account and moved it OUT of GPO policies, as a normal account instead, no effect still B&W only. It seems only MY account (which is domain administrator AND a normal account not part of the GPO objects) can actually print with color. This is the account that was used for installing the printer driver software. How can I manage to get everyone to print in color? Any suggestions as to what to try next?

• scp No such file or directory

  I've a confusing question for which superuser doesn't seem to have a good answer, and neither google. I'm trying to scp a file from a remote server to my local machine. The command is this scp user@server:/path/to/source/file.gz /path/to/destination The error I get is: scp: /path/to/source/file.gz: No such file or directory user is my username on the server. The command syntax appears fine to me. ssh works fine and I can cd to the file and it doesn't seem to be an access control issue? Thanks; Edit: Thank you John. I spotted the issue. ls returned this: -r--r--r-- 1 nobody users 168967171 Mar 10 2009 /path/to/source/file.gz So, the file was on a read-only file system and user is able to read it but not scp. I just copied the file to a different directory and chown it and worked fine. It would be good if someone can explain why this is the case though.

• Adding a single 300Gb SCSI drive to poweredge 2850

  I have a 2850 setup with 3 146Gb drives, two partitions 1 12GB system with server 2003 sp2 and 1 261Gb Data. I am strapped on disk space on the data partition having to push data around. I wanted to add a 300Gb single drive for lesser critical data, is this possible? Or is it best to add 2 300Gb drives for another RAID 1 configuration? This is my church network and while it is mission critical it is not enterprise so I can take it down for a few hours. Any pointers to documentation or direct help would be greatly appreciated. John

  I've recently started using Windows (having used Ubuntu up until now) and I find myself unable to properly set environment variables. Whenever I set them they don't seem to work. I've been going to Start-Edit Environment Variables for your Account and editing the PATH value in the upper half of the GUI. Here's what I've got so far. ;C:\Chocolatey\bin;C:\tools\mysql\current\bin;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin;C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Server 5.6\bin\;C:\Python33\Scripts; These are each the parent directories of the executables I'd like to be able to run by name from CMD, but mysql, git, and pip aren't being recognized. Am I doing something wrong syntactically or at a general understanding level? I'd like to be able to run these commands without having to specify the full path to the executables every time. • Problem setting up HP PhotoSmart C4783

  I am trying to get several PC's on a network to connect to my client's new wireless printer, the C4783. I initially installed the whole HP 'tsumami of software' the comes with the printer onto my laptop, connected to the printer over USB, and corrected it's networking config. My laptop now also can connect to and print on the printer over the wireless network, as is intended for all PC's. However, when I try and install the HP software on my client's netbook, the HP software cannot find the printer. Firewall was turned off during this time, so doesn't play a role. I tried re-installing all software, but I initially only got a "Repair" or "Uninstall". Choosing Uninstall triggers a lengthy process that ends with a sudden and forceful restart, after which the same "Repair" or "Uninstall" choices are present. Looks like uninstall doesn't. Any suggestions as to how I can begin diagnosing why my laptop has no problem connecting to the printer, but two others do? Wireless is unsecured, and no, nobody has to know where I am right now. :-)

• SQL Server Backup problem when browsing to the directory

  I want to allow a group (eg. 'BackupManagers') who can only preform backup and restore operations on certain databases. When creating the BackupManagers user account I checked db_backupoperator. When the user logs in to create a backup they get an error message similar to the following when the select Tasks - Backup - Click on Add in the destiantion block - click on the "..." button to browse TITLE: Locate Database Files - MYSERVER\SQL2005 E:\MSSQL\Backup Cannot access the specified path or file on the server. Verify that you have the necessary security privileges and that the path or file exists. If you know that the service account can access a specific file, type in the full path for the file in the File Name control in the Locate dialog box. I have confirmed that the user has permissions to the folder. I have even created a share to this folder and had them access it through explorer. They are able to create and delete files within the folder. I have found that if they type in the path to the file instead of using the "..." button to browse the directory tree then they can create a backup file fine. Why is the browse button not working as expected? Thanks!

• Unable to communicate with EWS from Exchange Server

  We are currently running a 2 server exchange environment with Edge services on their own. We are in the process of trying to deploy a piece of software that uses the EWS API which has brought me to this form, the software ties into the EWS service and uses it to forward messages (this is failing). Using the software error logs I have found that accessing EWS from the exchange server is not possible. From my work machine and an external address I can type the following https ://webmail.companyname.com/ews/exchange.asmx and be prompted for a username and password, once I enter credentials I get a screen full of information from services.wsdl. The problem is when I try the same URL from the exchange server and get the credentials prompt I cannot get past it. Even with the same credentials that work externally and from my desk it just keeps looping around. Capture from software log (11:41:32.6415 000017e4 System.Net.WebException: The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized.) I have also found the same results when trying https://webmail.companyname.com/ Autodiscover /Autodiscover.xml . Environment Information Server 2008 STD 64bit Exchange 2007 SP1 Purchased Cert – webmail.companyname.com I have also confirmed that all services have the proper internal and external URL’s. Any help would be appreciated.
