• PHP Script causing high CPU

  I have a website which is causing me a major headache. There is one PHP script which is using far to much CPU, this only seem to happen when bots hit the site, I dont want to block all the bots because we need them. I have the the process manager output: Pid Owner Priority CPU % Memory % Command 16943 (Trace) (Kill) specialone 0 99.4 1.0 /usr/bin/php /var/www/specialone/page.php I ran strace -p 16943 on the process but it comes up with nothing. We have 2GB of RAM and the php memory_limit is set to 128M which should be enough. The trouble I have is the PHP code is a Framework and the culprit page.php pulls in a lot of other PHP files so I cant debug the PHP. Is there any way of finding out what the script is doing when its using so much CPU which will help me solve it?

• Two mail servers, need help with dns configuration for the backup one

  I need to run a redundant backup mail server in case the main one goes down. The settings in GoDaddy look something like the following: A (Host) Host Points to @ ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail1 ip address of mail1 41.x.x.x mail2 ip address of mail2 196.x.x.x MX Priority host points to 10 @ mail1.mydomain.com 20 @ mail2.mydomain.com When mail1 goes down, mail2 is able to get emails. I can access it through the browser with no problem, but I want my users to able to pop3/smtp as well without changing anything in their outlook. I dont want any impact to the users when mail1 is down. Also, I'm using the windows server DFS to keep both folders of the mails in sync. Is this the right way, or should I be using something else?

• Video on demand streaming solution

  we are looking into building a commercial vod service and I'm doing research on the subject. We need the video to be protected with DRM so users cant rip/copy (i realise its mostly useless but the lawyers demand it from us) and the server solution to be scalable and able to distrubute content in hd to a high number of clients. Besides, we would need to be able to develop a player integrated with the payment system, so users that havent bought access would for example only see the first 30 seconds of video and then have the playback interrupted, or only be able to watch video for 72h after payment. Also it would be nice if we could distribute video to mobile platforms like android/wp8/ios but thats not a priority at the moment. I have zero experience on that topic so I would greatly appreciate any feedback or giving me stuff to read about like protocols or key phrases i should know. Thanks

• Exchange 2007 Email Address Policies

  We have recently upgraded to Exchange 2007 (from 2003) and have noticed the change from recipient policies to email address policies. We have two separate domains (let's call them domaina.com and domainb.com) we receive email for, have email address policies and both email address policies are not applied. In our Exchange 2003 environment, domaina.com was the default email address when we created new mailboxes and due to the migration, domainb is the default (and its email address policy is a higher priority). Now, when we create a new mailbox (or edit existing ones), the primary email address becomes domainb.com. Now the question is, is this as simple as putting the email address policies in the correct order? Do I have to apply both policies? What effect will the above changes make to existing mailboxes? Since we do not have any conditions set on the policies, I assume prior to making these changes, I should force all domainb mailboxes to not automatically update email address based on policy?   Hi, I got an disk array appliance of 8 disks 1T each (UltraStor RS8IP4). It will be used solely by PostgresQL database and I am trying to choose the best RAID level for it. The most priority is for read performance since we operate large data sets (tables, indexes) and we do lots of searches/scans. With the old disks that we have now the most slowdowns happen on SELECTs. Fault tolerance is less important, it can be 1 or 2 disks. Space is the least important factor. Even 1T will be enough. Which RAID level would you recommend in this situation. The current options are 60, 50 and 10, but probably other options can be even better.

• Linux QoS: bulk data transmission during idle times

  How would I do a QoS setup where a certain low-priority data stream would get up to X Mbps of bandwidth, but only if the current total bandwidth (of all streams/classes) on this interface does not exceed X? At the same time, other data streams / classes must not be limited to X. The use case is an ISP billing the traffic by calculating the bandwidth average over 5 minute intervals and billing the maximum. I would like to keep the maximum usage to a minimum (i.e. quench the bulk transfer during interface busy times) but get the data through during idle/low traffic times. Looking at the frequently used classful schedulers CBQ, HTB and HSFC I cannot see a straightforward way to accomplish this.

• How can I run a job when the server load is low?

  I have a command that runs a disk snapshot (on EC2, freezing an XFS disk and running an EBS snapshot command), which is set to run on a regular schedule as a cron job. Ideally I would like to be able to have the command delayed for a period of time if the disk is being used heavily at the moment the task is scheduled to run. I'm afraid that using nice/ionice might not have the proper effect, as I would like the script to run with high priority while it is running (i.e. wait for a good time, then finish fast). Thanks.

• How can I shut down all my Virtual Machines when my UPS kicks in?

  I have a Dell T610 running ESXi4, an APC Smart UPS 1000VA and a local "console" machine running Vista and the vSphere 4 Essentials pack. A dedicated management network is in place between the T610 and the Vista machine. We have 4 VMs: SBS 2003, Server 2003 running Terminal Services, and two XP Machines. Ideally, when the UPS is forced to use battery power [for a set number minutes], I would like to gracefully shutdown all the VMs, then the ESXi, then the console machine. The latter two are not strictly a priority, but the VMs within ESXi are. Google provided lots of deprecated scripts that used to work on ESXi 3.x or similar, however I am unable to find what they were deprecated by. What do I need to be able to do this? I have Powerchute Express as supplied with the UPS, but would be willing to pay for software if required.

  Hi, I need to setup an SVN repository for an iPhone / iPad app that I'm working on. It needs to be setup on a Windows server 2003 instance. We run VSS on it, but it doesn't really work all that well with XCode, so I'd like to migrate ASAP. The problem is, I'm a new graduate and this is the first time I'll be using a souce control software, so any tutorials on how to set one up, configure it to work correctly with Macs using XCode are greatly appreciated! Though it's not a priority, I'd also like to try to get my company to ditch VSS for SVN (Been reading this article yesterday - http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/08/source-control-anything-but-sourcesafe.html). • What to have in sources.list on an Ubuntu LTS server (production)?

  I have several Ubuntu 10.04 LTS servers in production and I'm using apticron to check that my software is up to date, security-wise. However, by default, Ubuntu has the lucid-updates repository enabled. This means lots of low-priority updates (such as this) that I don't need and thus, extra work for me. Is it okay to just remove the lucid-updates line(s) in sources.list? I still get security updates via lucid-security, right? • Prompt for user group when logging into OSX domain

  When a user is a member of more than one group, when logging in to a 10.6 machine, it shows a prompt asking for what group to apply settings for. We're using the groups to mount different shares, e.g. Production and Accounts, based on user membership. Often, a user is a member of more than one group, and needs all the drives available. The Open Directory server is running 10.6 also. Is there a way to skip this prompt and apply settings for all groups. I can foresee that there may be conflicts between group settings, but perhaps a priority can be set too? Or is this totally the wrong way to go about this?

• Why is an Ext4 disk check so much faster than NTFS?

  I had a situation today where I restarted my computer and it said I needed to check the disk for consistancy. About 10 minutes later (at "1%" complete), I gave up and decided to let it run when I go home. For comparison, my home computer uses Ext4 for all of the partitions, and the disk checks (which run around once week) only take a couple seconds. I remember reading that having fast disk checks was a priority, but I don't know how they could do that. So, how does Ext4 do disk checks so fast? Is there some huge breakthrough in doing this after NTFS came out (~10 years ago)? Note: The NTFS disk is ~300 GB and the Ext4 disk is ~500 GB. Both are about half full.

My asterisk .call file looks like this: Channel: SIP/flowroute/1234567890 Context: test Extension: 1234567890 Priority: 1 Here's my extensions.conf: [test] exten => _1NXXXXXXXXX,1,Set(CALLERID(num)=8005552222) exten => _1NXXXXXXXXX,n,Dial(SIP/${EXTEN}@flowroute) exten => _1NXXXXXXXXX,n,Playback(hello-world) When I receive the call, the caller id number is 1-206-445-6979, even though the CDR log has both src and clid set to 8005552222. I'm using flowroute as my carrier. Is there something wrong on their side?

  I'd like to re-open the question from link below, where several packages were suggested besides Ninite.com such as allmyapps.com. Package managers for Windows What I'd like to know is if they are all to be trusted to install in Windows 7 (64bit) so that the manager: Installs the latest version of software. Supports 64 bit installs where possible. Strips ads/toolbars/similar stuff. The later two points from previous questions are good but not a priority in the preparation of a clean install Provides a way to keep the programs updated after installation. If I can add custom installers to the software, that's a big plus. I am more concerned here about using a legitimate application I can trust to establish the basis of clean image of my operating system with all the application of choice installed without fuss and spam/bloatware.

  Is it possible to set up the standard backup system in SBS 2011 (or Server 2008 R2) to use an internal drive as a destination as well as external drives? Before you say yes, from my tests and from what I've read on the web, backups with internal drives included as a destination always seems to prefer the internal drive over connected external ones. (Regardless of what drive might be marked as 'active'). So no data ever gets written to a plugged in external drive. In my opinion external drives should always have priority over internal drives or including them is pointless.

• Where does traffic shaping typically take place?

  As part of upgrading our network infrastructure we are looking to traffic shape our bandwidth since we only have about 3Mb down / 1 Mb up. We're looking to prioritize it so that web browsing gets priority and in the future some VOIP might be added in as well. Internal LAN traffic doesn't need to be controlled just our outbound connection. I've been looking at Cisco hardware and it seems that several of their products do shaping at the core switch, firewall, and router level. I'm wondering where does shaping normally take place? Is it normally done at the router, core switch, or firewall?

• Make the recycle bin of the SSD on a RAID0 drive?

  I don't know about you folks, but I hate the idea of junk sitting on my tiny 30GB SSD. Any way to designate another drive to be the host of the Recycle Bin for items formerly on the SSD? Basically, I need to know how to make a lower-priority drive receive the recycled materials from the 'main' drive, which happens to be short on space. The best thing I can think of is a batch file that a) syncs 'recycle' to another drive; and b) empties the recycle bin. ... but that's too much work for me.

• Windows Server 2008 scheduled tasks cannot create files

  We have a series of tasks which, when run interactively over the command line run fine creating temporary files and (importantly) logs and backups. When we schedule the task with Administrator privileges to run at the highest priority, however, no logs or temporary files are created! All the directories have read/write privileges as administrator. Has anyone else experienced this?? We are running Windows 2008 Server & the job is configured for 'Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008'. Any help would be much appreciated! OK - so we installed Z-Cron and it works perfectly.... Still a really really strange error from Windows 2008 Task Scheduler, but a solution is perhaps not quite so urgent now we have Z-Cron working!

• OEM Windows 8 Downgrade to Windows 7

  I recently Purchased an ASUS K55A As you may know, all Windows 8 machines come with a BIOS that contains 'Secure Boot'. This basically makes sure that the BIOS won't load anything other than the Windows 8 OEM bloatware version that comes with new Laptops. However the Asus Bios allows for me to disable the secure boot, and therefore I should be able to revert to Windows 7, Linux, etc. Drivers may or may not be supported. When I put my MINT LINUX boot disc in CD-R Drive and try to boot from ISO, nothing happens. There isn't even a boot priority list in this BIOS... I can provide screen shots later. It just says WINDOWS 8 Bootloader and also on the other tab it says WINDOWS 8 BOOT OVERRIDE Has anybody purchased a windows 8 machine and successfully loaded windows 7 or Linux?
