• Any competitors to db4o on compact framework?

  We've been trying db4o for persisting objects on the compact framework. It works very well from our tests so far. However, it appears they are on the expensive side for small startups with minimal units needed. Does anyone know of any similar object databases for the compact framework? How about a open source one that is free for commercial use? :) Thank you. EDIT: We're really looking for an object database. We don't want to create our own persistence framework at this point and would prefer being able to just save/retrieve the actual object trees.

This new compensation scheme is pretty clever and well thought-out, but the complexity that the implementation will involve will make the Hubble look like a toaster. A significant portion of the programming industry involves CRUD apps; updating insurance data, calculating commissions (Joel included) ...even storing questions and answers for a programmer Q&A site. We as programmers have Code Complete for the low-level formatting/style and Design Patterns for high-level architecture (to name just a few). Where’s the comparable book that teaches best practices for CRUD?

• Database independent row level security solution

  Hi, does anybody knows about Java/C# database independent authorization library. This library should support read, write, delete, insert actions across company organizational structure. Something like this: - user can see all documents - user can enter new document assigned to his unit - user can change all documents assigned to his unit and all subordinate units. - user can delete documents that are assigned to him I should also be able to create custom actions (besides read, write,...) connect them to certain class and assign that "security token" to user (e.g. document.expire). If there aren't any either free or commercial libraries, is there a book that could be useful in implementing this functionality? Thanks.

• Could the UIHint attribute accept a property of the current class ?

  I found the follwing code in MSDN . How can I change this "UnitsInStock" with a value that my Product class has. For instance, Product has a FieldType property which has a string property called Name. I'd like to use that FieldType.Name property instead of hardcoding with a string. However, I cannot specify "this", or the current instance as an argument of the UIHint attribute . • SQL Server Table locks in long query - Solution: NoLock?

  a report in my application runs a query that needs between 5 - 15 seconds (constrained to count of rows that will be returned). The query has 8 joins to nearly all main-tables of my application (Customers, sales, units etc). A little tool shows me, that in this time, all those 8 tables are locked with a shared table lock. That means, no update operation will be done in this time. A solution from a friend is, to have every join in the query, which is not mandetory to have 100% correct data (dirty read), with a NoLock, so only 1 of this 8 tables will be locked completly. Is that a good solution? For a report in which 99% of data came from one table, unlock the less prio tables?

This works as intended. My problem is that I now want to turn this single form into a formset. What I can't figure out is how I can pass the affiliate information to the individual forms when creating the formset. According to the docs to make a formset out of this I need to do something like this: ServiceFormSet = forms.formsets.formset_factory(ServiceForm, extra=3) And then I need to create it like this: formset = ServiceFormSet() Now how can I pass affiliate=request.affiliate to the individual forms this way?

  To improve performance, NTFS directories use a special data management structure called a B-tree. "B-tree" concept here refers to a "tree of storage units" that hold the contents of an individual directory. What I don't understand is where on the disk is this tree stored? Its surely not created every-time we reboot...that would take lots of time. and since its a tree(dynamic Data structure) unlike arrays it will grow. so space needs to be allocated every-time it grows. so how is this "dynamic meta-data" stored ?

• Multiple port asynchronous I/O over serialport in C#

  I'm trying to write a test application for serial I/O (RS-232) with multiple units in C# and I'm running into an issue with my lack of threading experience so I'm soliciting feedback for a best known method. I've got a pool of COM ports COM1-16 each of which can read/write at any time and I need to be able to manage them simultaneously. Is this a situation for a thread pool? What is some guidance on structuring this applet? Edit: Upon review I was wondering is I really even need to do asynchronous threads here, I could just maintain states for each COM-port and do flow logic (i.e., statemachine) for each COM-port individually.

  Hey all, I am trying to use the date command in Terminal on multiple Mac OS X machines that are synced via NTP to synchronize some code in a program. Essentially I am running a program... MyProgram with arguments[date] I can get date to give me the seconds since the Unix epoch with the %M specifier. When I try to use %N to get nanosecond resolution, date just returns N. Is there anyway to get date to give me finer then second resolution? I wouldn't even mind passing two arguments such as (date +%M):arg2 And then converting units in the program.   I have installed both shoulda and factory_girl, I can run shoulda just fine, but when I add this: require 'factory_girl' Factory.define :user do |u| u.mail '[email protected]' u.pass 'secret' end to my test/test_helper.rb I'm getting this error: /test/test_helper.rb:1:in `require': no such file to load -- factory_girl (LoadError) when I execute rake test:units I have installed both gems using: sudo gem install thoughtbot-shoulda --source=http://gems.github.com sudo gem install thoughtbot-factory_girl --source=http://gems.github.com and can see both of them being installed fine. And by the way, this works fine as well: script/console Loading development environment (Rails 2.3.8) require 'factory_girl' = [] so requiring the gems seems to be working

• Access to selection in gmail message body with Google Apps Script

  Can app scripts access the current selection in a gmail message? I frequently compose messages that include engineering calculations and make use of the Google Calc feature do the calculation or convert to the desired units, e.g. 4000 Btu/hr * 8 hrs in kWh It would be really convenient to be able to select the above, hit a mapped key (e.g. Ctrl-K) and have the inserted after the expression 4000 Btu/hr * 8 hrs in kWh = 0.9378 kWh instead of having to paste the expression into a search box and then copy and paste the answer. I could certainly write a solution using a keymapper and a small python script to grab the current selection, send it to the gcalc api, etc ..., but my real motivation is to get familiar with Apps Scripts's capabilities and limitations. I suppose the uber-question here is "what kinds of user actions and state information can App Script access in Gmail messages (and/or Google docs) that are being edited?"

• Programmatically determine DPI via the browser?

  Hi all. I would like to programmaticaly determine the DPI of a user's display in order to show a web page at a precise number of units (centimeters/inches). I know it a weird request: it's for a visualization research project and it's kind of a control. We currently do it by having the user place a credit card to the screen and match a resizable div (via Mootools) to the real credit card, and voila we can get the DPI and display the page correctly. Can anyone think of a programmatic way to do this?

  I've been trying to solve this problem for a number of days now but I must be missing something. Known Variables: vi = Initial Velocity t = Animation Duration d = Distance The function I'm trying to create: D(t) = the current distance for a given time Using this information I want to be able to create a smooth animation curve with varying velocity (ease-in/ease-out). The animation must be able ease-in from an initial velocity. The animation must be exactly t seconds and must be travel exactly d units. The curve should lean towards the average velocity with acceleration occurring at the beginning and the end portions of the curve. I'm open to extra configuration variables. The best I've been able to come up with is something that doesn't factor in the initial velocity. I'm hoping someone smarter can help me out. ;) Thank you! p.s. • Are rems replacing ems in CSS?

  I was reading about rem units in CSS3, and was a little confused. If you use rem, do you still use em or does that replace it? For example: .selector { margin-bottom:24px; margin-bottom:2.4rem; font-size:16px; font-size:1.6rem; } or .selector { margin-bottom:24px; margin-bottom:2.4em; margin-bottom:2.4rem; } Just trying to figure out if rem takes the place of em, or if it's just another unit.

• A compiler for automata theory

  I'm designing a programming language for automata theory. My goal is to allow programmers to use machines (DFA, NFA, etc...) as units in expressions. I'm confused whether the language should be compiled, interpreted, or jit-compiled! My intuition is that compilation is a good choice, for some operations might take too much time (converting NFA's to equivalent DFA's can be expensive). Translating to x86 seems good. There is one issue however: I want the user to be able to plot machines. Any ideas?

  Hi All, I have a bunch of .eps files (CMYK) that I need to convert to .jpg (RGB) files. The following command sometimes gives me under or over saturated .jpg images, when compared to the source EPS file: $cmd = "convert -density 300 -quality 100% -colorspace RGB ".$epsURL." -flatten -strip ".$convertedURL; Is there a smarter way to do this such that the converted image will have the same qualities as the source EPS file? WRT Mocking, not so much with C++. I would like some guidance on what others do to mock and test Asynch io_service handlers with boost. For instance, in C# I would use a MemoryStream to mock an IO.Stream, and am assuming this is the path I should take here. • jQuery AJAX get request - cannot see returned data

  I think I am missing something obvious here, but I can't figure it out. I expect the following HTML to alert a response from the server. But, the alert is empty. I can see in Wireshark that the expected response is coming back to me from the server. • Why avoid pessimistic locking in a version control system?

  Based on a few posts I've read concerning version control, it seems people think pessimistic locking in a version control system is a bad thing. Why? I understand that it prevents one developer from submitting a change while another has the file checked out, but so what? If your code files are so big that you constantly have more than one person working on them at the same time, I submit that you should reorganize your code. Break it up into smaller functional units. Integration of concurrent code changes is a tedious and error-prone process even with the tools a good version control system provides to make it easier. I think it should be avoided if at all possible. So, why is pessimistic locking discouraged?

  Hello I have a question for a c programmer out there, we have a tast at school to create a soft real time system in an operation system made by our teacher. Well that is all fine and dandy, we have chosen to create a system that calcuate how many unites of medicine a diabetic need based on his or hers blood sugar. It does not need to be correct just that we have the idea of a real time system :D But we have hit a little snag our formula for calculating the units of medicine is [blood sugar] * 1.2 But the only way we can send messages between processes is via a structure that contains 8 longs, but here is where my knowledge of c ends, we need for some way to split this double into 2 longs, example: the whole number in long 0 and the decimals in long 1 and then assemble it on the other side. But I have no idea who to do this, and therefore need a little help. We have tried but we do not have access to c standard libraries

• what's the "best" approach to creating the UI of an audio plugin that will be both audio unit and VST for OS X and Windows?

  I'm working on a couple audio plugins. Right now, they are audio units. And while the "DSP" code won't change for the most part between implementations / ports, I'm not sure how to go about the GUI. For instance, I was looking at the Apple-supplied AUs in Lion. Does anyone know how did they go about the UI? Like, are the knobs and controls just subclasses of Cocoa controls? are they using some separate framework or coding these knobs and such from scratch? And then, the plugs I'm working on are going to be available too as VSTs for Windows. I already have them up and running with generic interfaces. But I'm wondering if I should just get over it and recreate all my interfaces with the vstgui code provided by Steinberg or if there's a more practical approach to making the interfaces cross-platform.

  I am trying to code a function for a camera that orbits a point. Assume a 3d coordinate plane where Z is up. Ignore Z. Let's say the camera's position starts at (0, 0, z). The object to orbit is at, say (50, 50, z). So we have a distance of ~70 units. Calling the function with {(50, 50, z), 70, x} where x is the position in orbit, in radians, should return where the position of the camera should be. I believe this involves cos and tan but my trig isn't that great... point3d getCameraPosition(point3d objectPosition, float distance, float rotationRadians) { // ??? }
