• Internal Mic not working on Dell Adamo 13

  So I'm using Elementary Luna Beta (based on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) on a spare HDD after successfully using Jupiter release (based on 10.10) for many years. In Jupiter I had my internal mic work out of the box and with Skype installed from deb it was all setup without having to step foot inside the terminal. In Luna Beta the internal mic is not recognised by the OS and so also not recognised by Skype. I believe the hardware is this (from sudo lshw): *-multimedia description: Audio device product: 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 1b bus info: pci@0000:00:1b.0 version: 03 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=0 resources: irq:46 memory:f8600000-f8603fff As well as this I ran cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec which gave me: Codec: IDT 92HD73C1X5 Codec: Intel Cantiga HDMI How do I tweak Luna to get this hardware working properly? I'm able to switch out my Luna HDD with the Jupiter HDD to help troubleshoot what the differences are between the two and why the more recent OS can't find / use the mic correctly. • Attempting to install netgear N300 Wireless USB Adapter on Ubuntu without a present internet connection

  Hello Linux/Ubuntu world out there. I don't have internet presently on the desktop I am trying to install the USB wireless adapter on. This seems to be the problem, which if the hardware would work would theoretically fix the problem. I can NOT access the internet via anything but wireless. I am presently on my laptop searching for answers while trying to install this little device. So any advice will have to take that into account. Now I have tried so far, using WINE which does not want to work, I have tried Windows Wireless Drivers which doesn't want to work, I have tried Software Sources, Other Software and it will not acknowledge the cdrom as a repository stating errors like E:Unable to stat the mount point /cdrom/ -stat (2: No such file or directory) However I can open the CD icon on my computer and access and browse the files. The computer can read the CD. I can read the CD. I've tried just plugging it in and seeing if the computer will automatically recognize the hardware, and go from there. That does not work either. I have tested USB port to just verify that the USB port works. It does. My laptop recognizes the hardware, and would easily install the software if I prompted it to. The difference is that my laptop is Vista, and I HATE Vista. Any tips, tricks?

• Local file system not properly unmounted during shutdown

  I have a file system with two HDDs and several partitions mounted separately locally. /root, /home, /usr, /var, /local/share , /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder, /backup are on separate partitions and are all ext3. During unmounting the message "unmounting local file system" does not appear any further and when booting all partitions but the root partition have to reload the journal, which indicates improper unmounting. The root partition and /usr are on sda, the others on sdb or further usb-mounted devices. the only partition unmounted w/o problem seems to be the root partition on sda4. I wonder whether the script to umount all devices has a "wait for success" loop or that the script itself got corrupted. However, yesterday I upgraded to 11.04 and the error persists. pmount does not look to be appropriate since the device are not hotplugged but simply mounted during system start. Obviously mounting /usr and afterwards /usr/local/share as well as /home and later /home/bernhard/fotos/bilder presents problems for umount; the devices may be busy und thus not properly unmounted. Does anybody have an idea for a script to organize unmounting in an ordered way? How to wait for unmounting of the secondary mount? Do you know as well where to place such a script that it will be used instead of the original umount command? Could be a general solution.

• Managing Kindle Fire with on 12.04 via Micro-USB

  To begin, I have read both Is there a way to get a Kindle Fire to work with 12.04? and How can I transfer files to a Kindle Fire with a Micro-USB cable? My problem is that I am unable to mount my Kindle Fire in order to add books to it. I have installed calibre, but it is unable to manage any devices until the computer itself has recognized it. The latter post had an excellent answer (provided by @jeremiah) that was making some progress. Unfortunately, I think I don't know enough about the -t flag used with mount. This is what I've done... Ran dmesg to locate the device: [ 3.920886] sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk Confirmed it's location: $ sudo ls -l /dev/disk/by-id lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 Aug 18 15:52 usb-Amazon_Kindle_3C6C002600000001-0:0 -> ../../sdb So we know that my Kindle is recognized on /dev/sdb. I then used the mount command suggested by @jeremiah: $ sudo mount -t ext3 /dev/sdb/ /mnt/kindle/ mount: no medium found on /dev/sdb The same error occurs for sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt/kindle. Note: I have created the 'kindle' directory in 'mnt' Any suggestions?

• Mobile App Notifications in the Enterprise Space: UX Considerations

  Here is a really super website of UX patterns for Android: Android Patterns. I was particularly interested in the event-driven notification patterns (aka status bar notifications to developers). Android - unlike iOS (i.e., the iPhone) - offers a superior centralized notifications system for users.   (Figure copyright Android Patterns)   Research in the enterprise applications space shows how users on-the-go, prefer this approach, as: Users can manage their notification alerts centrally, across all media, apps and for device activity, and decide the order in which to deal with them, and when. Notifications, unlike messages in a dialog or information message in the UI, do not block a task flow (and we need to keep task completion to under three minutes). See the Anti-Patterns slideshare presentation on this blocking point too. These notifications must never interrupt a task flow by launching an activity from the background. Instead, the user can launch an activity from the notification. What users do need is the ability to filter this centralized approach, and to personalize the experience of which notifications are added, what the reminder is, ability to turn off, and so on. A related point concerning notifications is when used to provide users with a record of actions then you can lighten up on lengthy confirmation messages that pop up (toasts in the Android world) used when transactions or actions are sent for processing or into a workflow. Pretty much all the confirmation needs to say is the action is successful along with key data such as dollar amount, customer name, or whatever. I am a user of Android (Nexus S), BlackBerry (Curve), and iOS devices (iPhone 3GS and 4). In my opinion, the best notifications user experience for the enterprise user is offered by Android. Blackberry is good, but not as polished and way clunkier than Android’s. What you get on the iPhone, out of the box, is useless in the enterprise. • How to restore Windows7 after restore ubuntu bootloader?

  At first I will describe my situation in a few points: I have installed Windows7, and then Ubuntu 11.04 on my machine. Then everything works fine and at start of system I have screen from linux where I can choose the system. Then I reinstall Windows7 and install Windows 8 on other partition. Then I can choose between Win7 and win8 when I start system. Then I need my Ubuntu back so I want restore my bootloader from Ubuntu. I boot Ubuntu from USB and in terminal write this commands: sudo fdisk -l Then I get: /dev/sda1 1 13 104391 de Dell Utility /dev/sda2 14 2805 22425601 5 Rozszerzona /dev/sda3 * 2805 41968 314572800 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda4 41968 60802 151282688 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sda5 14 2445 19530752 83 Linux /dev/sda6 2445 2805 2893824 82 Linux swap / Solaris Next commands: sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc sudo chroot /mnt grub-install /dev/sda I get Installation finished. No error reported.. And when I start my machine I have old Ubuntu start screen to choose system. Ubuntu works well. But There are no Windows 8 option. But my primary problem is when I choose Windows 7 I have: error: no such device ... error: no such disk so I have no idea what can I do. I really need both systems to work. Any help would be appreciated.

• AT&T Application Resource Analyzer in NetBeans IDE

  Here at Øredev in Malmö I met Doug Sillars who does developer outreach for the AT&T Application Resource Optimizer. In this YouTube clip you see Doug explaining how it works and what it can do for optimizing performance of mobile applications. There's a free and open source Android app on GitHub that you can install on Android to collect data and then there's a Java Swing application for analyzing the results. And here's what that application looks like as a plugin in NetBeans IDE, click to enlarge the image, which shows the Android sources of the Data Collector, as well as the Data Analyzer ready to be used to collect data: Since the ARO Data Analyzer is written in Java and has JPanels defining its UI layer, integrating the user interface wasn't hard. Now working on the Actions, so there'll be a new ARO menu with start/stop data collecting menu items, etc, reusing as much of the original code as possible. That part is actually already working. I started up an Android emulator, then started the data collection process from the IDE. Now need to include the Actions for importing the data into the analyzer, together with a few other related features. A pretty cool feature in ARO is video capture, so that a movie can be made by ARO of all the steps taken on the device during the collection process, which will also be nice to have integrated into the NetBeans plugin. Ultimately, this will be handy for anyone creating Android applications in NetBeans IDE since they'll be able to use AT&T's ARO tool for optimizing the performance of the applications they're developing. It will also be useful for those using the built-in Cordova tools in NetBeans IDE to create iOS applications because ARO is also applicable to analyzing iOS application performance.

• (Abstract) Game engine design

  I am writing a simple 2D game (for mobile platforms) for the first time. From an abstract point of view, i have the main player controlled by the human, the enemies, elments that will interact with the main player, other living elements that will be controlled by a simple AI (both enemies and non-enemies). The human player will be totally controlled by the player, the other actors will be controlled by AI. So i have a class CActor and a class CActorLogic to start with. I would define a CActor subclass CHero (the main player controlled with some input device). This class will probably implement some type of listener, in order to capture input events. The other players controlled by the AI will be probably a specific subclass of CActor (a subclass per-type, obviously). This seems to be reasonable. The CActor class should have a reference to a method of CActorLogic, that we will call something like CActorLogic::Advance() or similar. Actors should have a visual representation. I would introduce a CActorRepresentation class, with a method like Render() that will draw the actor (that is, the right frame of the right animation). Where to change the animation? Well, the actor logic method Advance() should take care of checking collisions and other things. I would like to discuss the design of a game engine (actors, entities, objects, messages, input handling, visualization of object states (that is, rendering, sound output and so on)) but not from a low level point of view, but from an high level point of view, like i have described above. My question is: is there any book/on line resource that will help me organize things (using an object oriented approach)? Thanks

• What is the advantage to using a factor of 1024 instead of 1000 for disk size units?

  When considering the disk space of a storage medium, normally the computer or operating system will represent it in terms of powers of 1024 - a kilobyte is 1,024 bytes, a megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes, a gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, and so on. But I don't see any practical reason why this convention was adopted. Usually when disk size is represented in kilo-, mega-, or giga-bytes, it has to be converted into decimal first. In places where a power-of-two byte count actually matters (like the block size on a file system), the size is given in bytes anyway (e.g. 4096 bytes). Was it just a little aesthetic novelty that computer makers decided to adopt, but storage medium vendors decided to disregard? Whenever you buy a hard drive, there's always a disclaimer nowadays that says "One gigabyte means one billion bytes". It would feel like using the binary definition of "gigabyte" would artificially inflate the byte count of a device, making drive-makers have to pack 1.1 terabytes into a drive in order to have it show up as "1 TB", or to simply pack 1 terabyte in and have it show up as "931 GB" (and most of them do the latter). Some people have decided to use units like "KiB" or "MiB" in favour of "KB" and "MB" in order to distinguish the two. But is there any merit to the binary prefixes in the first place? There's probably a bit of old history I'm not aware of on this topic, and if there is, I'm looking for somebody to explain it. (Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I felt that a question on best practice might belong here, but I have faith that it will be migrated to the right place if it's incorrect.)

• Cat 6 Only 100mbit speed

  I tried two different cat6 cables directly connected between my two ubuntu machines. This one I ordered online: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002SQPDXS/ref=wms_ohs_product only achieves 100mbit speeds, but does appear to be supporting cross-talk (direct pc to pc), the other cat 6 cable, worked perfectly and gets the full 1gigabit speed. Both tests were performed using ftp and checking the network monitor with direct pc to pc connection. Did the product from amazon lie to me or do I need to manually set a setting somewhere in ubuntu for some cables? I had thought 10 quid for 20m of gigabit ethernet cable was a bit cheap, you get what you pay for... Regards, Stu Update: It seems that after rebooting, the device is set to 1000mbit sec when looking it up with sudo ethtool eth0 However after a while, this will drop down to just 100, after which to reset it to 1000 again, I have to reboot, and simply unpugging and re-plugging in the cable doesn't do it. I tried setting this in networking config file as suggested here: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static pre-up /usr/sbin/ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full but that resulted in my networking failing to start. Is there a problem with my 'auto-negotiation' or something? Can I manually override a setting to 1000mbit?

• Yoga Pro 2 Wi-Fi not working

  I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my new Yoga Pro 2 and the wireless is not working. It started with Windows 8 on it. The Network Manager says Wi-Fi is disabled by hardware switch. I tried putting a blacklist file in ect/modprobe.d as has been suggested in many places. I called the file "blacklist-ideapad_laptop.conf" and wrote in the file blacklist ideapad_laptop I checked to make sure that the wireless is enabled in the BIOS. It is. I ran rfkill list all and it displayed: 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 2: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: yes I ran iwlist wlan0 scan and it displayed: wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Network is down I ran sudo rmmod ideapad_laptop and it displayed: rmmod: ERROR: Module ideapad_laptop is not currently loaded. I ran ifconfig wlp1s0 up and it displayed: wlp1s0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device. I ran "lspci" and it displayed: 01:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b) I ran sudo lshw -c network and it displayed: *-network DISABLED description: Wireless interface product: Wireless 7260 vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0<br> bus info: pci@0000:01:00:0.0 logical name: wlan0 version: 6b serial: 7c:7a:91:5f:9b:fa width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=3.13.0-24-generic firmware=22.24.8.0 latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn resources: irq:61 memory:b0400000-b0401fff This No wireless with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 7260 seems to be dealing with a similar issue. It suggests that I need to update my firmware. So I downloaded iwlwifi-7260-ucode-23.214.9.0 from Intel's website. I put the file "iwlwifi-7260-9.ucode" in /lib/firmware and ran "sudo lshw -c network" again. It displayed exactly as before. Is there something else I need to do install the new firmware?

• Can't connect to or see my wifi ssid

  Today I installed ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop. I am unable to see my home SSID or even connect to it. I've tried to connect as a hidden SSID but I always get prompted for authorization although my key is correct. I'm in in Europe but my laptop is from US. I'm not sure if that is relevant. I've read around this site and saw something that has to do with setting the channel above 11. I'm not sure I did that correctly I did this : How to use Wi-Fi channels above 11? Did't help. I'm able to connect with cable but not via wifi either windows or linux. Other devices in my home can connect without any issues, even the kindle. • Host grub error after installing Virtualbox - Non Recoverable

  I have been unable to fine a resolution to my problem and I have been suffering from it for a while. I can install Virtualbox and can reboot the machine successfully straight after. Once the system is back up I can run Virtualbox ans start working towards creating a new machine. So, say I am installing an XP machine. 1 time out of 10 it will work successfully first time. If it doesn't work (i.e BSOD), I delete the machine and start again. But when the time comes to finish up and switch off my computer, but it doesn't happen gracefully. As soon as I click shutdown, The machine dies. When the machine is switched back on I get: Error: no such device grub resuce I boot up my Grub Fix Live CD, but the grub reinstaller get stuck on searching for partitions, gparted just get stuck looking for devices and even fdisk -l drops a line and displays nothing and is the same. Stuck. The only way I know how to sort it is by re-installing Ubuntu. Has anyone had this problem, or know how to fix it?

• Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver for Radeon HD 7290?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with AMD Radeon HD 7290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... Update: OK. Another attempt. I have a fresh Ubuntu 12.10. All updates done. downloaded Catalyst 12.11 beta drivers and decided to create a package. • How do they keep track of the NPCs in Left 4 Dead?

  How do they keep track of the NPC zombies in Left 4 Dead? I am talking about the NPCs that just walk into walls or wander around aimlessly. Even though the players cannot see them, they are there (say inside rooms or behind doors). Let's say there's about 10 or so zombies in a hallway and inside rooms. Does the game keep all of those zombies in a list and iterate through giving them commands? Do they just spawn when the user is within a certain radius or reached a special location? Say you placed the 4 units (controlled by players) on completely different places throughout the map. Let's assume you aren't being swarmed and then you have not killed any of these aimless NPCs. Would the game be keeping track of 10 x 4 = 40 zombies in total? Or is my understanding completely off? The reason I ask is if I were to implement something similar on a mobile device, keeping track of 40 or more NPCs might not be such a great idea.

• Mouse wheel speed, a permanent solution?

  I would like to address an issue that has been around for a while now. The wireless mouse's wheel speed is abnormally fast on Ubuntu (as well as Mac Osx, as I have read) and the way to fix this temporarily is to unplug and plug the wireless adapter. A solution for this have been asked for in various forum topics on Ubuntu forums and also askubuntu. However the best solution for this is to re-plug the wireless adapter for the mouse. This fixes the mouse wheel speed until the next reboot. My question is, what can be done to make this permanent? Can a shell script be written, or firstly what can be causing this? If you could give me some ideas on why this problem is occurring I would happily write a shell script for it... (I am thinking if this is fixed by a simple re-plug of the adapter, maybe a shell script to disable device and re-enable it or something like that... could do the trick) I appreciate any discussions and ideas on the subjects. • I don't know how to connect to the internet

  I'm having some trouble finding an answer to my problem. I have a dell desktop (studio hybrid) and i have windows vista on it. The internet on windows vista works great, no problem. But now i downloaded Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm having problems. I can't find how to connect to my wireless network, when i click the network icon, it shows a list of things but I can only click 'enable wireless network' or something like that and 'edit connections'. But in this list it also says ( in a grey collor and i can't click it ) : 'No wireless connection, device not ready (firmware missing)" Or something like that. Now i tried several things i read on the internet (using my vista OS cause i can't use ubuntu for the internet, which is really enoying). But none of them helped me. I would like someone to tell me what my problem is or what information I have to give you to get an answer. So tell me if i have to edit a connection, or tell me how i have to get the wireless connection to work and to repair the 'firmware missing problem'. I hope someone can/is willing to help me. Bye

• One of the partion on a usb harddisk cannot automount

  It is a very strange problem. My usb harddisk has four partitions, one is primary, the other three are logical (contained within an extended partition). When I plug in the disk, three of the partitions are mounted automatically except one--the first logical partition in the extended partition. Initially I thought it is the problem of system (at that time I used Mint). But after I change to Ubuntu 12.04, the problem wasn't solved. I don't want to add a rule in fstab, and I want to know what happened. • Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.
