Why is the vSphere console view so slow?

Hi, Why is the Console view on the vSphere client so slow? It's a real shame because it's a shame to have to establish an RDP session every time you work on one of the VMs because of the speed of the console (I saw a tool to right click and open an RDP session to a VM in vSphere Client/ESX but this was not reliable). The Workstation console view is very smooth so I'd expect the vSphere Client console view to be very smooth. Thanks

Hi, How can I improve RDP performance? I'm on an 8mb line, and I have disabled all the fancy features like visual styles. One page said if I set a low speed, that too will increase performance. Is there any proof in this? Also, there was an ad here about an application/technology which can increase RDP performance by x20. Has anyone used this? Thanks

BackupExec Hyper-V availability (within BackupExec 2010 or seperate?)

Hi, I have downloaded the trial of Symantec BackupExec 2010 but I am a little confused: The agent for Hyper-V is available and for sale ($1800 or something), but the trial of BackupExec tells me i can install the agents I need from the installer. Can I install a full version of BackupExec, providing I have the license, but also install a full version of the Hyper-V agent? Or do I have to download/buy this seperately? Is a trial version available for the agents? As is probably obvious from this thread, I am a bit confused about the business model of this product. Please clarify. Thanks

Cannot resolve Hostname to IP, but IP to hostname works

Hi, I have deployed a bunch of windows server VMs on a cloud hosting service. These machines are all joined to a domain controller on the same service, which also hosts DNS. All of the domain-joined machines have dynamic IP (along with the DC). If I try to resolve any of the hostnames remotely, it fails. For example, I am in SQL Server Reporting Services and I need to connect to a remote server. I provide the hostname of the desired target server and this fails, but then if I provide the IP, this works. How can I pass the hostname and have this resolve to IP? Is there anything I need to look for in the DNS server? It has records of the hostnames (in forward lookup I think), but reverse is empty. Isn't it the case that forward lookup resolves ip to hostname and reverse resolves hostname to ip? Also, I don't know what he subnet mask because this is not in my control, so the machines may not be in the same subnet - can this be a cause of the problem? Where is the problem? Thanks

Forgotten account password

I kept my passwords recorded but the location on my PC where I kept this went missing. I now can't get into Windows Server 2008 R2 as I can't remember the administrator or named account credentials and have no password reset disk. This is on a VM (VM Player - which btw is temp till I get Hyper-V). How can I get back in? If I make AD can I join the server to AD and then set a domain account?

Is defragging right for me?

Hi, I am using Hyper-V on my Windows Server 2008 R2 DC x64 machine. I am also using standard SATA drives. I read some threads on here about defraging but could not reach a conclusion about whether or not I should use defragging. Can anyone shed some light on whether this will be right for me? Furthermore, what tool is best? Convert VM running on Linux hypervisor to OVF/VMDK

Hi, I have a bunch of VMs on a Linux hypervisor (cloudsigma.com to be precised). I want to convert these to deploy to an ESX hypervisor (opsource cloud server), but need to create an ovf with the vmdk. I don't have access to the hypervisor of either service but opsource allow me to import ovf/vmdk so this is possible. What tool can create an ovf (With vmdk) of a Windows OS? I am not sure if VCenter Converter would work as it requires access to the hypervisor, if I remember correctly. I am hoping for something like vhd2disk which will create a .vhd of the currently running, parent Windows OS on a system. Thanks

Sudden complaint that Windows is not genuine - some questions

Hi, I used to use VMWare Workstation and made several VMs with Win Server 2008, which worked fine. My first tasks were to setup RDP, updates, and activate the OS. I deleted Workstation and thus did not have my VMs available to use for about 2 months. Now I have VMWare Server 2.0.2 as I this is free and I am going to get Hyper-V on a host Win Server in about March, but when I have accessed one of my VMs (haven't tried the others yet), it complains that the copy of Windows is not genuine. I now have a black screen but can access all my apps on the VM. Will the OS eventually shut me out from accessing it? I got my key from the Action Pack but the standard R2 key has been taken down and replaced with the Enteprise R2 key. I have Enterprise R2 but apparently the autorun is corrupt! Thanks

Free batch image watermarking software

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a simple yet effective software to watermark a lot of photos in batch. I have to apply a transparent png watermark image on 400 photos. The program have to place the watermark at a custom position relative to the bottom right corner of every picture. I would have done this in photoshop, but the scriptable action doesn't allow me to do conditionnal placing if the photo is portrait or landscape. I'm looking for a free lightweigh program. How can I move an existing VM's files to a new directory in the same datastore?

Hi, I have some VMs deployed on ESX. In vSphere 4, I want to move these VMs into another directory in the datastore. So the VM directories are under root, but I want them in root/MyNewFolder. I tried this by turning off a VM, copying the VM's file (VMDK etc) into the directory I want, deleting the hard drive from the VM's settings, adding a new hard drive and then selecting the new path to the VMDK. When I press ok on the settings dialog box, having made this modification to the settings, I get the following error: not found. What I am trying to do also does not seem to be possible when making a new VM. I can only make VMs under root.

How to ensure dbs are all in sync when restored?

Hi, In large server environments, how do you handle the issue of backing up SQL Server dbs which may not be in sync with other dbs they rely on? So if I back up DB1 from a server, and it uses another db which is not backed up, doing a restore when the dbs are in differing state could cause problems? It seems like all dependent DBs should be backed up, regardless of size etc, but in my current job (where we're a datacentre company and I'm a .NET Developer), I only backup some of several dependent DBs on a SQL Server instance. SuperMicro BMC on OpenSuSE Linux --cannot access from LAN

Hi, I have an (old) SMC-001 IPMI device on an (old) X6DVL-EG2 motherboard. My problem is that I cannot access the BMC from LAN. I'm also getting some interesting output from ipmitool. First, the setup. I enable Console Redirection in the BIOS, turn BIOS Redirection after POSt to "disabled". I then modprobe'ed for ipmi_msghandler, ipmi_devintf and ipmi_si. I then found ipmi0 under /dev. So far so good. Can Current Backflow from Powered Hub's Adapter & cause PC Damage?

Getting this short: Can current flow from a powered USB hub's power adapter (lying 10 Meter away) back to computer via usb port and cause damage to Computer components like mobo, etc? What should be my concerns? Using a 2 Amp 5V Power adapter to power a 10m Long Active Repeater USB extension cable with 4 port HUB & plugging into PC's Front port, causes PC Chassis fan to keep running (thought slower than regular speed) Front Chassis HDD & power LED to turn on (though bit dim) may be other things which i cant detect/see at chip level, in motherboard?? All this even after PC is shut down (bit scary) More detail (in case still want to read): To run 4 High power (needing 450 mAmps) Wifi Adapters, far away from PC, Bought Active Repeater USB Extension Cable with 4 Ports & power port at far end http://www.ebay.com/itm/33FT-USB-2-0-Male-to-Female-Extension-Cable-Hub-Splitter-Adapter-with-4-USB-Port-/390846115254 Then added a locally bought 2 Amp 240V AC to 5V DC Power Adapter and plugged into USB hub which is a part of & situated at far end of a 10 Meter Active Repeater usb extension cable. Even 4 Wifi Adapters run fine (appear to) using this setup, but running chassis fan, dimly lighted Power & HDD LED, even when PC is switched off is bit scary and surely mean 5V & some current is flowing all though that 10 meter extension cable into my USB port & powering stuff. Can this cause damage? and what should be my concerns. Of course I can't switch off the power adapter (lying 10 meters away from PC) every time I switch off my PC to prevent this.

How Does EoR Design Work with Multi-tiered Data Center Topology

I just did a ton of reading about the different multi-tier network topology options as outlined by Cisco, and now that I'm looking at the physical options (End of Row (EoR) vs Top of Rack(ToR)), I find myself confused about how these fit into the logical constructs. With ToR it also maps 1:1: at the top of each rack there is a switch(es) that essentially act as the access layer. They connect via fiber to other switches, maybe chassis-based, that act as the aggregation layer, that then connect to the core layer. With EoR it seems that the servers are connecting directly to the aggregation layer, skipping the access layer all together, by plugging directly into what are typically chassis switches. In EoR then is the standard 3-tier model now a 2-tier model: the servers go to the chassis switch which goes straight to the core switch? The reason it matters to me is that my understanding was that the 3-tier model was more desirable due to less complexity. The agg switch pair acts as default gateway and does routing; if you use up all of your ports in your agg layer pair it's much more complicated to add additional switches, than simply adding more switches at the access layer. Are there other downsides to this layout? Does this 3-tier architecture still apply in some way in EoR? Thanks.

Computer wont start, just blinks on and off

This is really strange. I had a comp that was working fine for over a year, then suddenly it started to shut off, it got so bad that I press the power button and in around 30 secs while booting windows it would shut off, then 20 secs... then 10 secs, then it refused to start all together. So I bought a new PSU (850w Thermaltake, the old one was 550w corsair) thinking that was the problem, I fitted the new PSU now and its the same thing, I press the power button and my fans start for a split second (they have led lights on them, so the lights come on) and then everything goes off again. I thought maybe it was my power button that was loose on my comp, luckily I had another chassis near by so I disconnected the powerSW from the old one and put ran the powerSW from the new chassis, press the power on the new chassis and same thing, it blinks for a split second and off again. Double checked connections from the PSU to the cpu power as well as board mobo power, its tight. It's pretty unlikely both the PSUs have the same exact problem so am lost... Suggestions?

Hi, Is it possible to do an 'exact full text search' with CONTAINS. I have removed all noise words etc. but the dbms still seems to manipulate the 'exact word' (e.g. 'j-blade - blade'). Can I disable this? Thanks. Christian PS: I would like to avoid like because it is too slow and with exact I mean that the text contains the exact word.

Dropdownlist post in ASP.NET MVC3 and Entity Framework Model

I have 3 tables: RateProfile RateProfileID ProfileName Rate RateID RateProfileID PanelID Other stuff to update Panel PanelID PanelName I have models for each of these. I have an edit page using the RateProfile model. I display the information for RateProfile and also all of the Rates associated with it. This works fine and I can update it fine. However, I also added a dropdown so that I can filter Rates by PanelID. I need it to post back on change so that it can display the filtered rates. I'm using @Html.DropDownList("PanelID", (SelectList)ViewData["PanelDropDown"], new { onchange = "$('#RateForm').submit()" }) for my dropdownlist. Whenever it posts back to my HttpPost Edit method though, it seems to be missing all information about the Rates navigation property. It's weird because I thought it would do exactly what the input/submit button that I have in the form does (which actually passes the entire model back to my HttpPost Edit action and does what I want it to do). The panelID is properly being passed to my HttpPost Edit method and on to the next view, but when I try to query the Model.Rates navigation property is null (only when the post comes from the dropdown. Everything works fine when the post comes from my submit input). Finding out document template type of document library

Hi, When I make a document library in Sharepoint 2003 and select the document template type etc and come back to edit/administer the document library, how can I find out what document template type I selected at the time of creation? Another way of putting it: If an administrator makes a document library and selects a document template type and he/she leaves without documenting his/her settings for the document library, how could I find out what document template type he selected?
