  • How can I tell groovy/grails not to try to "re-encode" binary data? (Revised title)

    - by ?????
    I have a groovy/grails application that needs to serve images It works fine on my dev box, the image is returned properly. Here's the start of the returned JPEG, as seen by od -cx 0000000 377 330 377 340 \0 020 J F I F \0 001 001 001 001 , d8ff e0ff 1000 464a 4649 0100 0101 2c01 but on the production box, there's some garbage in front, and the d8ff e0ff before the 1000 is missing 0000000 ? ** ** ? ** ** ? ** ** ? ** ** \0 020 J F bfef efbd bdbf bfef efbd bdbf 1000 464a 0000020 I F \0 001 001 001 \0 H \0 H \0 \0 ? ** ** ? 4649 0100 0101 4800 4800 0000 bfef efbd It's the exact same code. I just moved the .war over and run it on a different machine. (Isn't Java supposed to be write once, run everywhere?) Any ideas? An "encoding" problem? The code is sent to the response like this: response.contentType = "image/jpeg"; response.outputStream << out; Here's the code that locates the image on an internal application server and re-serves the image. I've pared down the code a bit to remove the error handling, etc, to make it easier to read. def show = { def address = "http://internal.application.server:9899/img?photoid=${params.id}" def out = new ByteArrayOutputStream() out << new URL(address).openStream() response.contentLength = out.size(); // XXX If you don't do this hack, "head" requests won't work! if (request.method == 'HEAD') { render( text : "", contentType : "image/jpeg" ); } else { response.contentType = "image/jpeg"; response.outputStream << out; } } Update: I tried setting the CharacterEncoding response.setCharacterEncoding("ISO-8859-1"); if (request.method == 'HEAD') { render( text : "", contentType : "image/jpeg" ); } else { response.contentType = "image/jpeg;charset=ISO-8859-1"; response.outputStream << out; } but it made no difference in the output. On my production machine, the binary bytes in the image are re-encoded/escaped as if they were UTF-8 (see Michael's explanation below). It works fine on my development machine.

  • Generate jpeg compressed Tiff using RGB colorspace (using Java + JAI)

    - by nOiSe gaTe
I'm trying to make tiled pyramidal tiffs from master tiff images using Java (JAI 1.1.3 + imageIO). The problem is: I NEED to make tiff files compressed in jpeg with RGB photometric interpretation and no matter what I try, the image still faces YCbCr photometric interpretation. Note: if I change compression type (eg. LZW or Deflate) I can get RGB colorspace but, as I said, I need jpeg compression. Except this detail the tiled PTiff I create it's ok, so I think it's better to focus the attention on simple compression step (uncompressed tiff -- jpeg tiff) this may be a basic example (removing any check to make it more readable) // reading MASTER BufferedImage img = ImageIO.read(uncompressedTiff); ImageOutputStream ios=null; ImageWriter writer=null; ios = ImageIO.createImageOutputStream(outFile); Iterator <ImageWriter> writers = ImageIO.getImageWritersByFormatName("tiff"); writer = writers.next(); // saving and compression params writer.setOutput(ios); ImageWriteParam param = writer.getDefaultWriteParam(); param.setCompressionMode(ImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT); param.setCompressionType("JPEG"); param.setCompressionQuality(0.8f); param.setTilingMode(ImageWriteParam.MODE_EXPLICIT); param.setTiling(256, 256, 0, 0); IIOMetadata metadata = getWriteMD(writer, param); // writing writer.write(metadata, new IIOImage(img, null, metadata), param); in getWriteMD method: .... TIFFTag photoInterp = base.getTag(BaselineTIFFTagSet.TAG_PHOTOMETRIC_INTERPRETATION); TIFFField fieldPhotoInter = new TIFFField(photoInterp, BaselineTIFFTagSet.PHOTOMETRIC_INTERPRETATION_RGB); .... here is the full version of getWriteMD()

  • SVG to JPEG/BMP conversion

    - by stanigator
I have a svg file that I want to convert to jpeg or bmp (or any other image formats). However, all the conversions that I have used on the various online tools yielded very unclear output images. I don't want to use svg as it is very inconvenient. What would be your suggestions to get around that?

  • Scanned JPEGs are large and slow to load - can they be optimized losslessly?

    - by Alistair Knock
I have hundreds of JPEG photographs which were scanned about 5 years ago from negative using a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Scan Dual IV. The dimensions are ~4500x3000, and the filesize is around 12Mb, compared to shots from a DSLR with dimensions of 3000x2300 and filesize of 2-4Mb (actually, these are the output from a RAW convertor). The filesize is obviously quite a big difference, but the issue that's bothering me is that the (perceived) loading time is at least 10 times slower. Is this size/speed discrepancy likely to be because the scanner software saved the JPEGs inefficiently / using an old compression format, or is it simply that the scanned negatives contain much more "detail" (in the form of grain/noise) than the digital images? If the former, is there a way to losslessly optimize them? I've tried re-exporting the scanned files to full size JPEG from my RAW software but the filesize is pretty much the same. Both files will have been saved at 100 quality.

  • How do I enable JPEG Support for PHP?

    - by ngache
My Configure Command doesn't say anything about jpg, nor gif/png, but I can see gif/png support in the output of phpinfo(). I built PHP with --with-gd, but only GIF Support and PNG Support are in the output of phpinfo(), how do I enable JPEG Support? UPDATE I got this problem when compiling : Sorry, I cannot run apxs. Possible reasons follow: 1. Perl is not installed 2. apxs was not found. Try to pass the path using --with-apxs2=/path/to/apxs 3. Apache was not built using --enable-so (the apxs usage page is displayed) The output of /usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs follows: cannot open /usr/local/apache2/build/config_vars.mk: No such file or directory at /usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs line 218. What should I do now?

  • Converting Source ASCII Files to JPEGs

    - by CommonsWare
I publish technical books, in print, PDF, and Kindle/MOBI, with EPUB on the way. The Kindle does not support monospace fonts, which are kinda useful for source code listings. The only way to do monospace fonts is to convert the text (Java source, HTML, XML, etc.) into JPEG images. More specifically, due to pagination issues, a given input ASCII file needs to be split into slices of ~6 lines each, with each slice turned into a JPEG, so listings can span a screen. This is a royal pain. My current mechanism to do that involves: Running expand to set a consistent 2-space tab size, which pipes to... a2ps, which pipes to... A small Perl snippet to add a "%%LanguageLevel: 3\n" line, which pipes to... ImageMagick's convert, to take the (E)PS and make a JPEG out it, with an appropriate background, cropped to 575x148+5+28, etc. That used to work 100% of the time. It now works 95% of the time. The rest of the time, I get convert: geometry does not contain image errors, which I cannot seem to get rid of, in part because I don't understand what the problem is. Before this process, I used to use a pretty-print engine (source-highlight) to get HTML out of the source code...but then the only thing I could find to convert the HTML into JPEGs was to automate screen-grabs from an embedded Gecko engine. Reliability stank, which is why I switched to my current mechanism. So, if you were you, and you needed to turn source listings into JPEG images, in an automated fashion, how would you do it? Bonus points if it offers some sort of pretty-print process (e.g., bolded keywords)! Or, if you know what typically causes convert: geometry does not contain image, that might help. My current process is ugly, but if I could get it back to 100% reliability, that'd be just fine for now. Thanks in advance!

  • Color space - RGB and YCbCr question

    - by HardCoder1986
Hello! I am now trying to understand how JPEG encoding works and everything seems fine except the color transformation part. Before attempting to do a DCT in JPEG algorithm, the image is transformed into YCbCr color space. To me this essentially means that we just (comparing to initial RGB image) take a chunk of color information and dispose it while applying the RGB -> YCbCr transformation. So, our encoding steps look generally like RGB -> YCbCr -> DCT -> Huffman. The decoding means inversing this process. And my question is - why does the image (for example, created and exported to JPEG) remain the same in terms of color, although we have to make inverse YCbCr -> RGB transform. Where does the disposed part of color information comes from or how is it handled?

  • Image Classification - Detecting an image is cartoon-like

    - by kingb
I have a large amount of jpeg thumbnail images ranging in size from 120x90 to 320x240 and I would like to classify them as either Real Life-like or Cartoon-like. Are there any applications that will have cartoon classification capabilities? This application should work on Linux, and should take an image path on the command-line and return either 0 or 1 (echo $?).

  • How do I make Windows pbrush default to a save-as JPG format?

    - by nik
Every time I want to save some image I paste into the Paint application, it chooses a BMP/DIB format (which is the worst for saving things from the clipboard). How can I hack this Windows pbrush application into defaulting to a JPEG format save always? If it matters I am using Windows XP SP3 and Paint 5.1 at the moment. But, I thought the hack would be generic, and I'd like to do this across all my Windows machines.

  • Image Resizing: Poor jpeg quality and black PNG backgrounds

    - by azz0r
    Hello, I have two issues with my class, basically the quality of the jpeg images is quite poor, but I'm not sure if thats down to my ratio resizing. Ideally I'd like this class to be strict with image sizes and crop into them, but I cant get my head around it. My main issue is that pngs always have a black bg, does anyone have experience with this happening? <?php class OpenSource_ImageResize { function __construct($theFile, $toWhere, $mime, $extension, $newWidth, $newHeight) { if ($mime == NULL) { $mime = getimagesize($theFile); $mime = $mime['mime']; } if ($mime == 'image/jpeg') { $size = getimagesize($theFile); if ($size[0] > $newWidth || $size[1] > $newHeight) { $sourceImage = imagecreatefromjpeg($theFile); } else { return copy($theFile, $toWhere); throw new exception('Could not create jpeg'); return false; } } else if ($mime == 'image/png') { $size = getimagesize($theFile); if ($size[0] > $newWidth || $size[1] > $newHeight) { $sourceImage = imagecreatefrompng($theFile); } else { return copy($theFile, $toWhere); //throw new exception('Could not create png'); return false; } } else if ($mime == 'image/gif') { $size = getimagesize($theFile); if ($size[0] > $newWidth || $size[1] > $newHeight) { $sourceImage = imagecreatefromgif ($theFile); } else { return copy($theFile, $toWhere); //throw new exception('Could not create gif'); return false; } } else { throw new exception('Not a valid mime type'); return false; } $oldX = imageSX($sourceImage); $oldY = imageSY($sourceImage); if ($newWidth == NULL) { $thumbHeight = $newHeight; $thumbWidth = round($newHeight/($oldY/$oldX)); } else if ($oldX > $oldY) { $thumbWidth = $newWidth; $thumbHeight = $oldY * ($newHeight/$oldX); } if ($oldX < $oldY) { $thumbWidth = round($newHeight/($oldY/$oldX)); $thumbHeight = $newHeight; } if ($oldX == $oldY) { $thumbWidth = $newWidth; $thumbHeight = $newHeight; } if (!gd_info()) { $dstImage = ImageCreate($thumbWidth, $thumbHeight); imagecopyresized($dstImage, $sourceImage, 0, 0, 0, 0, $thumbWidth, $thumbHeight, $oldX, $oldY); } else { $dstImage = ImageCreateTrueColor($thumbWidth, $thumbHeight); imagecopyresampled($dstImage, $sourceImage, 0, 0, 0, 0, $thumbWidth, $thumbHeight, $oldX, $oldY); } if ($mime == 'image/png') { $xparent = imagecolorresolvealpha($dstImage, 255,2,240, 0) ; imagecolortransparent($dstImage,$xparent); imagealphablending($dstImage,true); imagepng($dstImage, $toWhere); } else if ($mime == 'image/jpeg') { imagejpeg($dstImage, $toWhere); } else if ($mime == 'image/gif') { imagegif ($dstImage, $toWhere); } imagedestroy($dstImage); imagedestroy($sourceImage); return true; } }

  • iPhone: Going from transformed layers to jpeg

    - by Devin Ross
I have a bunch of images that are transformed (using touch gestures). I want to take the transformations the user does to the images and create a jpeg from it. (ie. if a user rotates a photo to the right, I want to get a jpeg of the photo rotate to the right just as the looks on screen). This takes into account that the photo could be bigger than whats displayed on screen too (no screenshots). I'm trying to use CGContext (CGContextRotateCTM specifically) but its not been too successful. Thanks for the help.

  • Colors less saturated in Snow Leopard Finder, Preview & Safari than in Chrome -- why?

    - by Andrew Swift
If I look at the picture here in Safari, Preview or the finder, the shades of blue are significantly different than if I look at the picture in Google Chrome (they are less saturated than in Chrome). Since I am a photographer and need to prepare pictures for publication online, I need to know what a jpeg should really look like, in order to color-correct it. I have an excellent Eizo monitor that is correctly calibrated. If I open the same image in Photoshop CS3, I get the Chrome colors if I use Monitor RGB under view proof setup, and I get the Safari colors if I use Macintosh RGB. Can anyone explain the difference between these two settings, and the difference between Safari and Chrome? Which colors are correct? Photos that I prepared under Windows (during the past five years) now seem washed out in the Apple Finder and Preview, even though I had correctly prepared them. Is there a setting on the Macintosh for color calibration, besides the monitor calibration control panel?

  • Strange activity in My Pictures folder: Thumbnail doesn't match actual picture.

    - by Sam152
After finding an amusing picture on a popular imageboard, I decided to save it. A few days past and I was browsing my images folder when I realised that the thumbnail generated by Windows XP in the thumbnails view did not match the actual image. Here is a comparison image: What's even stranger in this situation is that the parts of the photograph that are different have actually been replaced with what might be the correct background. Furthermore, it is a jpeg (no PNG transparency tricks) that is 343 kilobytes but only 847x847 pixels wide. What could be going on here? Could there be anything malicious in the works, or hidden data? Before anyone asks, I have checked and preformed the following: Deleted Thumbs.db to reload thumbnails. Opened image in different editors. (they appear with the text) Moved image to a different directory. Changed the extension to .rar. All these steps produce the same results. Pre actual posting update: It seems that opening the image in paint, changing the image entirely (deleting entire contents and making a red fill) will still generate the original thumbnail, even after deleting Thumbs.db etc. I'm also hesitant to post the original data, in case there is something malicious or hidden that could be potentially illegal. (Although it would be very beneficial to see if it works on other computers and not just my own).

  • JPEG artifacts removal in C#

    - by Arcturus
Hi all I am building a website for a club that is part of a mother organisation. I am downloading (leeching ;) ) the images that where put on profile pages of the mother organisation to show on my own page. But their website has a nice white background, and my website has a nice gray gradient on the background. This does not match nicely. So my idea was to edit the images before saving them to my server. I am using GDI+ to enhance my images, and when I use the method MakeTransparent of Bitmap, it does work, and it does do what its supposed to do, but I still have these white jpeg artifacts all over the place. The artifacts makes the image so bad, I am better off not making the image transparent and just leaving it white, but thats really ugly on my own website. I can always at a nice border with a white background of course, but I rather change the background to transparent. So I was wondering if and how I can remove some simple JPEG artifacts in C#. Has anyone ever done this before? Thanks for your time. Example image: Transformed image:

  • A generic error occurred in GDI+, JPEG Image to MemoryStream

    - by madcapnmckay
Hi, This seems to be a bit of an infamous error all over the web. So much so that I have been unable to find an answer to my problem as my scenario doesn't fit. An exception gets thrown when I save the image to the stream. Weirdly this works perfectly with a png but gives the above error with jpg and gif which is rather confusing. Most similar problem out there relate to saving images to files without permissions. Ironically the solution is to use a memory stream as I am doing.... public static byte[] ConvertImageToByteArray(Image imageToConvert) { using (var ms = new MemoryStream()) { ImageFormat format; switch (imageToConvert.MimeType()) { case "image/png": format = ImageFormat.Png; break; case "image/gif": format = ImageFormat.Gif; break; default: format = ImageFormat.Jpeg; break; } imageToConvert.Save(ms, format); return ms.ToArray(); } } More detail to the exception. The reason this causes so many issues is the lack of explanation :( System.Runtime.InteropServices.ExternalException was unhandled by user code Message="A generic error occurred in GDI+." • Server Push CGI Perl Problem writing the JPEG image

    - by Jujjuru
I am a beginner in Perl CGI etc. I was experimenting with server-push concept with a piece of perl code. It is supposed to send a jpeg image to the client every 3 seconds. Unfortunately nothing seems to work. Can somebody help identify the problem? Here is the code.... use strict; # turn off io buffering $|=1; print "Content-type: multipart/x-mixed-replace;"; print "boundary=magicalboundarystring\n\n"; print "--magicalboundarystring\n"; #list the jpg images my(@file_list) = glob "*.jpg"; my($file) = ""; foreach $file(@file_list ) { open FILE,">", $file or die "Cannot open file $file: $!"; print "Content-type: image/jpeg\n\n"; while ( <FILE> ) { print "$_"; } close FILE; print "\n--magicalboundarystring\n"; sleep 3; next; } EDIT: added turn off i/o buffering, added "use strict" and "@file_list", "$file" are made local

  • FFMPEG dropping frames while encoding JPEG sequence at color change

    - by Matt
    I'm trying to put together a slide show using imagemagick and FFMPEG. I use imagemagick to expand a single photo into 30fps video (imagemagick also handles things like putting some text captions on the frames along the way). When I go to let ffmpeg digest it into a video it clips along nicely on the color parts of the video, but when it gets to a black and white section it reports "frame= 2030 fps=102 q=32766.0 Lsize= 5203kB time=00:01:07.60 bitrate= 630.5kbits/s dup=0 drop=703" and drops every frame of video until it hits something with color. As you can imagine this results in entire photos being removed from the slideshow. Here is my latest dump... ffmpeg -y -r 30 -i "teststream/%06d.jpg" -c:v libx264 -r 30 newffmpeg.mp4 ffmpeg version git-2012-12-10-c3bb333 Copyright (c) 2000-2012 the FFmpeg developers built on Dec 10 2012 22:02:04 with gcc 4.6.1 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.6.1-9ubuntu3) configuration: --enable-gpl --enable-libfaac --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopencore-amrnb --enable-libopencore-amrwb --enable-librtmp --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-libx264 --enable-nonfree --enable-version3 libavutil 52. 12.100 / 52. 12.100 libavcodec 54. 79.101 / 54. 79.101 libavformat 54. 49.100 / 54. 49.100 libavdevice 54. 3.102 / 54. 3.102 libavfilter 3. 26.101 / 3. 26.101 libswscale 2. 1.103 / 2. 1.103 libswresample 0. 17.102 / 0. 17.102 libpostproc 52. 2.100 / 52. 2.100 Input #0, image2, from 'teststream/%06d.jpg': Duration: 00:12:02.80, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj444p, 720x480 [SAR 72:72 DAR 3:2], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc [libx264 @ 0x3450140] using SAR=1/1 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast SSSE3 FastShuffle SSE4.2 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] profile High, level 3.0 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] 264 - core 129 r2 1cffe9f - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec - Copyleft 2003-2012 - http://www.videolan.org/x264.html - options: cabac=1 ref=3 deblock=1:0:0 analyse=0x3:0x113 me=hex subme=7 psy=1 psy_rd=1.00:0.00 mixed_ref=1 me_range=16 chroma_me=1 trellis=1 8x8dct=1 cqm=0 deadzone=21,11 fast_pskip=1 chroma_qp_offset=-2 threads=12 lookahead_threads=2 sliced_threads=0 nr=0 decimate=1 interlaced=0 bluray_compat=0 constrained_intra=0 bframes=3 b_pyramid=2 b_adapt=1 b_bias=0 direct=1 weightb=1 open_gop=0 weightp=2 keyint=250 keyint_min=25 scenecut=40 intra_refresh=0 rc_lookahead=40 rc=crf mbtree=1 crf=23.0 qcomp=0.60 qpmin=0 qpmax=69 qpstep=4 ip_ratio=1.40 aq=1:1.00 Output #0, mp4, to 'newffmpeg.mp4': Metadata: encoder : Lavf54.49.100 Stream #0:0: Video: h264 ([33][0][0][0] / 0x0021), yuvj420p, 720x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 3:2], q=-1--1, 15360 tbn, 30 tbc Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 - #0:0 (mjpeg - libx264) Press [q] to stop, [?] for help Input stream #0:0 frame changed from size:720x480 fmt:yuvj444p to size:720x480 fmt:yuvj422p Input stream #0:0 frame changed from size:720x480 fmt:yuvj422p to size:720x480 fmt:yuvj444pp=584 frame= 2030 fps=102 q=32766.0 Lsize= 5203kB time=00:01:07.60 bitrate= 630.5kbits/s dup=0 drop=703 video:5179kB audio:0kB subtitle:0 global headers:0kB muxing overhead 0.472425% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] frame I:9 Avg QP:20.10 size: 33933 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] frame P:636 Avg QP:24.12 size: 6737 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] frame B:1385 Avg QP:27.04 size: 514 [libx264 @ 0x3450140] consecutive B-frames: 2.5% 15.2% 13.2% 69.2% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] mb I I16..4: 8.3% 80.3% 11.5% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] mb P I16..4: 1.5% 2.5% 0.2% P16..4: 41.7% 18.0% 10.3% 0.0% 0.0% skip:25.9% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] mb B I16..4: 0.0% 0.0% 0.0% B16..8: 26.6% 0.6% 0.1% direct: 0.2% skip:72.3% L0:35.0% L1:60.3% BI: 4.7% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] 8x8 transform intra:64.1% inter:75.1% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] coded y,uvDC,uvAC intra: 51.6% 78.0% 43.7% inter: 10.6% 14.9% 2.1% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] i16 v,h,dc,p: 29% 19% 6% 46% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] i8 v,h,dc,ddl,ddr,vr,hd,vl,hu: 23% 15% 17% 5% 9% 10% 7% 8% 6% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] i4 v,h,dc,ddl,ddr,vr,hd,vl,hu: 31% 18% 11% 5% 9% 10% 6% 6% 4% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] i8c dc,h,v,p: 46% 18% 24% 12% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] Weighted P-Frames: Y:20.1% UV:18.7% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] ref P L0: 59.2% 23.2% 13.1% 4.3% 0.2% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] ref B L0: 88.7% 8.3% 3.0% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] ref B L1: 95.0% 5.0% [libx264 @ 0x3450140] kb/s:626.88 Received signal 2: terminating. One last note: If I remove the -r 30 from the input and output it works flawlessly. I have no idea why the -r 30 is causing it to freak out.

  • Converting JPEG colorspace (Adobe RGB to sRGB) on Windows (.Net)

    - by Imageree
I need to generate thumbnail and medium sized images from large photos. These smaller photos are for display in an online gallery. Many of the photographers are submitting JPEG images using Adobe RGB. I would like to use sRGB for all thumbnails and medium size images I am using dotnet (asp.net) and need a way to convert from Adobe RGB to sRGB without losing any quality. Thanks in advance.

  • JS/Jquery, Match not finding the PNG = match('/gif|jpg|jpeg|png/')

    - by nobosh
I have the following code which I use to match fancybox possible elements: $('a.grouped_elements').each(function(){ var elem = $(this); // Convert everything to lower case to match smart if(elem.attr('href').toLowerCase().match('/gif|jpg|jpeg|png/') != null) { elem.fancybox(); } }); It works great with JPGs but it isn't matching PNGs for some reason. Anyone see a bug with the code? Thanks
