• boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

  Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

• Anybody know how to get podcasts sorted correctly on a Zune?

  If I could understand the logic behind it I could actually manage to get my stuff sorted correctly on the device. It doesn't matter how things are sorted on disk, or in the software itself. As items are added to the sync list they end up sorted in some weird manner which, quite frankly, brings out an anger in me that scares me. A primitive, misshapen and unthinking anger. Kind of like the lumpy guy in Altered States. Frankly, I'm afraid one day its going to burst forth and I will track down the entire Zune team and make them pay for their failures. Help me prevent this from happening. Help me understand what I need to do to ensure my podcasts end up in the order I wish them to be in, not some obscure random order that makes no sense.

• Possible to use DRBD on two ESXi virtualized servers?

  I have two servers (attached disks have been set up as hardware RAID1 for disk device level failure resilience). Here is the setup in my mind: 1) Install ESXi on each of the physical server, M1, M2; 2) Start one VM on each of the ESXi virtualized physical server V1, V2; 3) Install the DRDB drivers within V1 and V2. Essentially, this is a "virtualizing machine running DRBD in the VM's instead of bare metal hardware" idea. My question is whether the above setup can achieve the same "networked RAID1" goal that DRDB can achieve in the bare-metal physical machines (http://www.drbd.org/). Thanks. [EDIT] I found this (http://serverfault.com/questions/49305/drbd-experimentation-and-virtualization) is a similar question, but the answer does not seem to be firmative enough for me to follow.

• Cisco redundancy modes

  I am using a Cisco 6500 series with an SSO redundancy configuration. The show redundancy output is as follows: Hardware Mode = Duplex Configured Redundancy Mode = sso Operating Redundancy Mode = rpr Maintenance Mode = Disabled Communications = Up I would assume the device is operating in RPR mode although SSO is configured. What could cause this? Shouldn't the operating mode be SSO? • Automation of software installation - should I ask for text or file?

  I am preparing a software installation in Windows environment for my application. During installation it asks for Subscriber ID which should be entered into text field. I am wondering if it is a best solution for mass installations. I know that for mass installations IT teams use systems like Microsoft System Center which allow automate deployment. But I do not know much about capabilities of such systems. Can such system automate data entry into the text fields? Will it be better to change installation process and ask not a text but a file which contains Subscriber ID? By the way, I am looking for beta testers for my software. This software let user view Microsoft Project files without having Microsoft Project installed.

• ASA5500 series logging for management interface in transparent mode

  i have a cisco asa5520 in transparent mode. the interface is on the same subnet as some windows machines, which are generating a lot of broadcast traffic that is filling up the logs. is there any way to have it not log that its blocking those packets? its a bunch of these messages: "through-the-device packet to from management-only network is denied: udp src..." im also seeing some of those zeroconf requests that id like to drop logging for. i tried to just put a rule on the management interface, but apparently thats not allowed.

  I'm trying to create a direct connection to a hardware device via RS232 serial connection. Am using a USB to Serial adapter and works fine in WinXP but the option seems to have disappeared in Win7. This is the only connection option available for this piece of hardware so I have no choice. Currently have a netbook with WinXP installed purely for interfacing with this hardware. In XP it was just a matter of creating an "Advanced connection" and then "Directly to another computer" etc, I can find no such options in Win7.

• How to add addtional disks to a Windows 2008 KVM based Guest?

  I have a Win 2008 KVM based guest VM running on a Ubuntu 10 host. It is a raw image of 22G. I want to add a "data" drive which would show up as "D:\" drive on the guest. I first created a raw image using: qemu-img create -f raw ~/vmdisk2.img 50G Then, tried attaching it using virsh attach-disk. When that did not work, I tried editing the xml file of the VM directly. Both did not seem to work. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to do this and what the best practice is. I want to keep the base image small, so that I can clone it (hopefully) and then attach necessary storage based on the application at hand. • USB forwarding from dom0 to domU

  What are my options to forward two USB connected phones to xen guest? I've read about PCI-passthrough http://www.wlug.org.nz/XenPciPassthrough, but I'm sure usb controller in the server isn't a pci card. There's device level forwarding, but I need to forward two devices, this here doesn't say how to do it: http://www.olivetalks.com/2008/02/03/usb-forwarding-on-xen-it-just-does-not-work/ Would something as simple as: usbdevice = [ 'host:xxx', 'host:yyy', ] work? • How to create a filesystem mountable by windows in linux?

  I have attached an external USB disk to my debian gnu/linux system. The disk showed up as device /dev/sdc, and I prepared it like this: created a single partition with fdisk /dev/sdc (and some more commands in the interactive session that follows) formatted the partition with mkfs.msdos /dev/sdc1 If I then attach the USB disk to a Windows XP or Vista system, then no new drive becomes available. The disk and its partition show up fine in the disk managment tool under "computer management", but apparently the file system in the partition is not recognized. How do I create a FAT32 file system which can actually be used in windows? edit: I've given up on this and went with a NTFS file system created by windows. In debian lenny this can be mounted read-write but apparently it requires you to install the "ntfs-3g" package and explicitly pass the -t ntfs-3g option to the mount command.

• Problems with webcame

  My friends is using windows 8.1 and he has a webcam. He says it is working very well even without installing drivers. Webcam is A4tech - PK-331F. I asked for this webcam for use. I plugged that that webcam and windows detected it and installed drivers automatically. Then I opened Skype for checking webcam. I got massage on top of Skype that "your webcam has microphone" when I clicked over it, it directed me to sound settings where I microphone of webcam was working. I went to videos settings but webcam wasn't listed their. As you can see in image. Webcam is listed in device manager but isn't listed in Skype. I am also using windows 7 professional. Any idea why it is happening?

• Finding spoofed IP address on network

  I have a few IP spoof dropped messages coming out of my Sonicwall firewall, we'll call them Source A and Source B. Both of these sources have the same mac address indicating they're coming from the layer 3 switch behind my firewall. Source A has an ip within a valid subnet on my network and it shows up in the ARP table of my layer 3 switch. I was able to trace the exact location and fix the issue. Source B's ip however, is not within valid subnet on my network and it's not showing up in my layer 3 switches arp table. Any idea how I can trace the location of this device within my network? • Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Internet problems

  I've got problems on my freshly installed windows Xp machine. I cannot connect to the internet and I've tried various 'solutions' provided to me by the help and support center. Surprisingly none of them worked... Anyways, I've got 3 pc's next to me sharing a lan which is connected to the internet though a modem. The computer I use right now uses windows xp aswell and runs without any problems. I've tried everything on not working computer. I've ran the connection wizard several times, but it's not working :( Also I've very little experience with this version of windows, so I'm sorry if the solution is obvious.

  I want to set up an Oracle Linux 6 server that gives users secure IMAP email (with dovecot), Jabber IM, FTP (with vsftpd), and calDav. However, I want each user logon to be able to authenticate all services (e.g. Joe Smith signs up once for a username and password that he can use for email, ftp, and his calendar). My question is, which database service will be best suited for that application? Also, is there a way to link the database with the preexisting server shell logins (e.g. so I can read the root account's LogCheck emails on a different device)?

• Jumbo Frames, ISCSI and ESXi

  I have enabled Jumbo Frames (9000) in ESXi for all my vmNICs, vmKernels, vSwitches, iSCSI Bindings etc - basically anywhere in ESXi where it has an MTU settings I have put 9000 in it. The ports on the switches (Dell PowerConnects) are all set for Jumbo Frames. I have a Dell MD3200i with 2 controllers, each with 4 ports for iSCSI. Each of these ports is set to Jumbo Frames (9000) as well. So now the questions: Do I need to log into each Windows Server VM I am running and delve into the NIC properties and manually set it to Jumbo Frames in the NIC properties in the device Manager as well? Whats the best way of testing that Jumbo Frames are indeed working as intended?

• Rollback driver in Windows via command line

  I have a remote system in which I've updated the Nvidia graphics driver, but now RDPDD.dll, which I'm guessing stands for RDP Display Driver, will not load (found this out via Event Viewer). I can use Sysinternal's Psexec to execute commands though. I'm sure something has gone very wrong and the user of this system (a CAD engineer) won't be able to use his system normally. I've tried two remote reboots and that has not resolved the issue. So I would like to use the "Roll Back" option for the Nvidia driver in the device manager. Is there a command-line way of doing this?

• Google Analytics unexplained spike

  My client's Google Analytics has had a spike everyday from May 6th (from 0 - 100.) This is in a city that he is not optimized for and does very little business in. The hits are coming in direct to the website. My client is concerned that it has something to do with competition using his site as a price shopping device. I can't view the ip to see where they are coming from and his site is not built in PHP so the work around doesn't work here. Any thoughts? Could it be a "referring site" situation and if so is there a way for me to find out what the referring site is?

• Windows (7 & Vista) laptop monitor does not come back after closing lid

  I'm experiencing an issue with Windows Vista (and now Windows 7) with my laptop. When I close the laptop lid the monitor goes blank but will not come back on after I re-open the laptop. The screen stays blank and nothing that I do will get it to come back. The laptop is an HP DV9000 series. Has anyone else ran into this issue? One of the solutions I've seen online is to go into the device manager and replace the lid driver with something nonsensical (the website suggested pointing the driver at the sound recorder). This does solve the problem by disabling the lid but doesn't really resolve the root issue. I'm asking if anyone has any method I can use to debug what's going on. How do I tell if it is an operating system issue vs. a malfunction within the lid itself. I'd actually like the lid to function as it's meant to. Thank you!

• some keyboard keys not working properly

  I'm using Windows 7. All of a sudden, a couple of hours ago, this happened: My keyboard number keys [above the letters] stopped working properly, both as numbers and as symbols. Only 5 and 6 are functional. Also, I've noticed that the End key isn't working either, and perhaps a couple more from that group. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with those evil Sticky Keys/Filter Keys/ whatever those ease of access things are, BUT I've turned off all the ease of access keyboard options and nothing has changed. Is it possible that something is still turned on while I unchecked it? Are the on/off checkboxes to control WHEN it happens or IF it happens? I also tried rebooting and uninstalling/reinstalling keyboard from device manager, to no avail. It's certainly a software issue and not a hardware issue, as I've tried another keyboard and the problem persists. And, predictably enough, it's annoying. Any ideas?

(Network Storage - 192.168.1.16) How can i acces one of them using a PC connected to the Secondery Router? Home Network Diagram: I currently have access to the internet using both laptop and Main PC. But i want to get access from my laptop to the Storage and to ym shared directorys. The problem is the my Main router always forwards all packets stright to the WAN.. (Internet)

• Mounting LVM2 volume with XFS filesystem

  Unfortunately I'm not able to access the data on my NAS anymore. I can't figure out why this is the case as I haven't changed anything. So I plugged one of the harddisks in my computer to access the data. What I did: kpartx -a /dev/sdc Now I should be able to access /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 When trying to mount it I get: sudo mount -t xfs /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001 /home/user/mnt mount: /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: can't read superblock Now I did a parted -l which gave me Modell: Linux device-mapper (linear) (dm) Festplatte /dev/mapper/vg001-lv001: 498GB Sektorgröße (logisch/physisch): 512B/512B Partitionstabelle: loop Number Begin End Size Filesystem Flags 1 0,00B 498GB 498GB xfs Does anybody have a solution how to recover the data?

• VMware ESX 3.5 Host Health shown as unknown

  I have an ESX 3.5 update 5 cluster of five host servers, all fully patched as of this Friday. Today I noticed that one of the servers has the Hardware Health status as unknown in Virtual Center Infrastructure Client. When I look at the Health Status view under configuration for that host, all the items are status Unknown. The server is exactly the same configuration as the others - same model (HP DL360 G5), memory, NICs etc. I have tried restarting the management service with service mgmt-vmware restart but this has not resolved the issue. Asides from this, I am not seeing any issues with the cluster - however, I hate having a blind spot like this. Any ideas?
