• How to debug EXC_BAD_ACCESS that occurs only on release target for an iPhone app?

  I'm developing an iPhone application. I have an EXC_BAD_ACCESS that occurs only in the release target; when I build the debug target the exception does not occur. However, when I set the NSZombieEnabled environment variable to YES, I still get the EXC_BAD_ACCESS with no further information. Is it even possible for NSZombieEnabled to work when executing the release target? I don't see why not, since gdb is running in both cases... • WYSIHAT 'resonds_to_parent" undefined method - Ruby on Rails

  I just successfully installed WysiHat in my rails blog. Seems that the 'add a picture' feature is not working. It successfully allows me to find and select a picture from my desktop but upon clicking save, it does nothing. I also have Paperclip successfully installed and can attach images to records outside the WYSIHAT form field. Any ideas? (let me know if I need to post any code). Also, WysiHat-engine uses facebox, not sure if that is relevant. UPDATE: Added Server Log, looks like paperclip is saving it so not sure what else is going wrong. • Creating a Serializable mock with Mockito error

  I'm trying to create a mock object with Mockito that can be serialized. The object is an interface implementation. When this method is called, I receive an object that I want to pass to another object, hence using the doAnswer(...)-method. This is my code. • Smart auto detect and replace URLs with anchor tags

  I've written a regular expression that automatically detects URLs in free text that users enter. This is not such a simple task as it may seem at first. Jeff Atwood writes about it in his post. His regular expression works, but needs extra code after detection is done. I've managed to write a regular expression that does everything in a single go. This is how it looks like (I've broken it down into separate lines to make it more understandable what it does): 1 (?<outer>\()? 2 (?<scheme>http(?<secure>s)?://)? 3 (?<url> 4 (?(scheme) 5 (?:www\.)? 6 | 7 www\. 8 ) 9 [a-z0-9] 10 (?(outer) 11 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+(?=\)) 12 | 13 [-a-z0-9/+&@#/%?=~_()|!:,.;cšžcd]+ 14 ) 15 ) 16 (?<ending>(?(outer)\))) As you may see, I'm using named capture groups (used later in Regex.Replace()) and I've also included some local characters (cšžcd), that allow our localised URL to be parsed as well. You can easily omit them if you'd like. Anyway. Here's what it does (referring to line numbers): 1 - detects if URL starts with open braces (is contained inside braces) and stores it in "outer" named capture group 2 - checks if it starts with URL scheme also detecting whether scheme is SSL or not 3 - starts parsing URL itself (will store it in "url" named capture group) 4-8 - if statement that says: if "sheme" was present then www. part is optional, otherwise mandatory for a string to be a link (so this regular expression detects all strings that start with either http or www) 9 - first character after http:// or www. should be either a letter or a number (this can be extended if you would like to cover even more links, but I've decided to omit other characters because I can't remember a link that would start with some other character 10-14 - if statement that says: if "outer" (braces) was present capture everything up to the last closing braces otherwise capture all 15 - closes the named capture group for URL 16 - if open braces was present, capture closing braces as well and store it in "ending" named capture group First and last line used to have \s* in them as well, so user could also write open braces and put a space inside before pasting link. Anyway. Question I would like for my links to be replaced with shortenings as well. So when user copies a very long links (for instance if they would copy a link from google maps that usually generates long links I would like to shorten the visible part of the anchor tag. Link would work, but visible part of an anchor tag would be shortened to some number of characters. Does the replace string support notations like that so I can stil use a singe Regex.Replace() call?

For example, I can use {if}, {foreach}, or {assign} tags without any problems. But whenever I try to use {html_select_date}, {html_image}, or {html_table}, I get the errors. In case this matters, the programmer who is designing the plugin copied the openXWorkflow plugin and made some changes. I noticed that the openXWorkflow plugin has a file (openx/plugins_repo/openXWorkflow/www/admin/plugins/openXWorkflow/library/OX/UI/Smarty/SmartyCompilerWithViewHelper.php) with a class that overrides the default Smarty compiler, supposedly with the ability to compile shorthands for calling ZF view helpers. That file has a list of Smarty functions, but the list is incomplete. If I add the functions to the list, or simply delete the file, my template works fine, but I don't like to change library files. It may make the app hard to maintain, and I don't know if it will mess up something else. The file has the comment "There is no easy access to the list of Smarty's built-in functions so we need to list them here. HTML-specific functions are not included as we cover HTML generation separately.", so it seems like certain Smarty functions may be disabled on purpose for some reason. Will anything bad happen if I try to use them? If, for example, I want to use the {html_select_date} tag in my template, how would I go about doing that? Keep in mind that much of this stuff is new and unfamiliar to me. This is my first time ever using OpenX or Smarty, and I only have a little bit of experience with the Zend framework. Please let me know if we are using the wrong approach.

  Here's a simplified version of a problem I'm working on: I have a bunch of xml data that encodes information about people. Each person is uniquely identified by an 'id' attribute, but they may go by many names. For example, in one document, I might find <person id=1>Paul Mcartney</person> <person id=2>Ringo Starr</person> And in another I might find: <person id=1>Sir Paul McCartney</person> <person id=2>Richard Starkey</person> I want to use xquery to produce a new document that lists every name associated with a given id. i.e.: <person id=1> <name>Paul McCartney</name> <name>Sir Paul McCartney</name> <name>James Paul McCartney</name> </person> <person id=2> ... </person> The way I'm doing this now in xquery is something like this (pseudocode-esque): let $ids := distinct-terms( [all the id attributes on people] ) for $id in $ids return <person id={$id}> { for $unique-name in distinct-values ( for $name in ( [all names] ) where $name/@id=$id return $name ) return <name>{$unique-name}</name> } </person> The problem is that this is really slow. I imagine the bottleneck is the innermost loop, which executes once for every id (of which there are about 1200). I'm dealing with a fair bit of data (300 MB, spread over about 800 xml files), so even a single execution of the query in the inner loop takes about 12 seconds, which means that repeating it 1200 times will take about 4 hours (which might be optimistic - the process has been running for 3 hours so far). Not only is it slow, it's using a whole lot of virtual memory. I'm using Saxon, and I had to set java's maximum heap size to 10 GB (!) to avoid getting out of memory errors, and it's currently using 6 GB of physical memory. So here's how I'd really like to do this (in Pythonic pseudocode): persons = {} for id in ids: person[id] = set() for person in all_the_people_in_my_xml_document: persons[person.id].add(person.name) There, I just did it in linear time, with only one sweep of the xml document. Now, is there some way to do something similar in xquery? Surely if I can imagine it, a reasonable programming language should be able to do it (he said quixotically). The problem, I suppose, is that unlike Python, xquery doesn't (as far as I know) have anything like an associative array. Is there some clever way around this? Failing that, is there something better than xquery that I might use to accomplish my goal? Because really, the computational resources I'm throwing at this relatively simple problem are kind of ridiculous.

I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements". What I could do is just add another row underneath "1 2" and increase the rowspan from "1 2", but the new cell would then appear out of order amongst "1 2 5" and "1 2 6". I don't really need the exact code to do this, just something to stop my head from spinning around this...Thanks!

• Is the Unix Philosophy still relevant in the Web 2.0 world?

  Introduction Hello, let me give you some background before I begin. I started programming when I was 5 or 6 on my dad's PSION II (some primitive BASIC-like language), then I learned more and more, eventually inching my way up to C, C++, Java, PHP, JS, etc. I think I'm a pretty decent coder. I think most people would agree. I'm not a complete social recluse, but I do stuff like write a virtual machine for fun. I've never taken a computer course in college because I've been in and out for the past couple of years and have only been taking core classes; never having been particularly amazing at school, perhaps I'm missing some basic tenet that most learn in CS101. I'm currently reading Coders at Work and this question is based on some ideas I read in there. A Brief (Fictionalized) Example So a certain sunny day I get an idea. I hire a designer and hammer away at some C/C++ code for a couple of months, soon thereafter releasing silvr.com, a website that transmutes lead into silver. Yep, I started my very own start-up and even gave it a clever web 2.0 name with a vowel missing. Mom and dad are proud. I come up with some numbers I should be seeing after 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 12 months and set sail. Obviously, my transmuting server isn't perfect, sometimes it segfaults, sometimes it leaks memory. I fix it and keep truckin'. After all, gdb is my best friend. Eventually, I'm at a position where a very small community of people are happily transmuting lead into silver on a semi-regular basis, but they want to let their friends on MySpace know how many grams of lead they transmuted today. And they want to post images of their lead and silver nuggets on flickr. I'm losing out on potential traffic unless I let them log in with their Yahoo, Google, and Facebook accounts. They want webcam support and live cock fighting, merry-go-rounds and Jabberwockies. All these things seem necessary. The Aftermath Of course, I have to re-write the transmuting server! After all, I've been losing money all these months. I need OAuth libraries and OpenID libraries, JSON support, and the only stable Jabberwocky API is for Java. C++ isn't even an option anymore. I'm just one guy! The Java binary just grows and grows since I need some legacy Apache include for the JSON library, and some antiquated Sun dependency for OAuth support. Then I pick up a book like Coders at Work and read what people like jwz say about complexity... I think to myself.. Keep it simple, stupid. I like simple things. I've always loved the Unix Philosophy but even after trying to keep the new server source modular and sleek, I loathe having to write one more line of code. It feels that I'm just piling crap on top of other crap. Maybe I'm naive thinking every piece of software can be simple and clever. Maybe it's just a phase.. or is the Unix Philosophy basically dead when it comes to the current state of (web) development? I'm just kind of disheartened :(

• Slow Jquery Animation

  I have this webpage : http://miloarc.pyrogenicmedia.com/ Which atm is nothing special. It has a few effects but none that break the bank. If you mouse over a tile, it should change it's opacity to give it a fade effect. This is done through the Jquery Animation, not through CSS (I do this so it can fade, instead of being a straight change). Everything looks nice when the page loads, and the fades look perfect. Infact if you drag your mouse all over the place, if gives you a "trail" almost like a snake. Anyway, My next problem is that you will see there is a box in the top left, which is going to tell you information about the tile you are hovering over. This seems to work fine. When you mouse over that information box, it switches it's position (So that you can reach the tiles that were previously hidden underneath it). From my understanding, this is all working fine, and to the letter. However, After one move of the info box (One hover). Viewing the page in Firefox turns slugish. As in, after a successful move of the info box, the fade effects become very stuttered, and it doesn't pick up events as fast meaning you can't draw a "trail" on the screen. Chrome doesn't have this issue. It seems to work fine no matter what. Safari also seems ok. Although I do notice if I move my mouse really fast, it does jump a bit but not as much as firefox. Internet explorer doesn't work at all. Seems to crash the browser... And there is an error with the rounded corner plugin im using (Not sure why...). All in all, I think whatever I'm doing inside my code must be heavily sluggish. But I don't know where it is happening. • wave.getState() returns null

  When trying to call wave.getState() in my Google Wave gadget, I get back null (no state object). How can I initialize the Wave state object? I am working in the Wave Sandbox. My ModulePrefs contains the following: <Require feature="wave" /> <Require feature="rpc"/> I got the "rpc" feature from some google groups post when searching for a fix, but it doesn't seem to be any help. When I click on the new button link (the link at the bottom in edit mode), and trigger the newButtonClick handler, I get an error because wave.getState() also returns null. How can I initialize the wave state so that I can work with it? The purpose of my gadget will be to keep track of combat initiative order in a Shadowrun tabletop game (4th Ed). • Explain the Peak and Flag Algorithm

So I ran across this site http://codility.com/ Which gives you programming problems and gives you certificates if you can solve them in 2 hours. The very first question is one I have seen before, typically called the Peaks and Flags question. If you are not familiar A non-empty zero-indexed array A consisting of N integers is given. A peak is an array element which is larger than its neighbours. More precisely, it is an index P such that 0 < P < N - 1 and A[P - 1] < A[P] A[P + 1] . For example, the following array A: A[0] = 1 A[1] = 5 A[2] = 3 A[3] = 4 A[4] = 3 A[5] = 4 A[6] = 1 A[7] = 2 A[8] = 3 A[9] = 4 A[10] = 6 A[11] = 2 has exactly four peaks: elements 1, 3, 5 and 10. You are going on a trip to a range of mountains whose relative heights are represented by array A. You have to choose how many flags you should take with you. The goal is to set the maximum number of flags on the peaks, according to certain rules. Flags can only be set on peaks. What's more, if you take K flags, then the distance between any two flags should be greater than or equal to K. The distance between indices P and Q is the absolute value |P - Q|. For example, given the mountain range represented by array A, above, with N = 12, if you take: two flags, you can set them on peaks 1 and 5; three flags, you can set them on peaks 1, 5 and 10; four flags, you can set only three flags, on peaks 1, 5 and 10. You can therefore set a maximum of three flags in this case. Write a function that, given a non-empty zero-indexed array A of N integers, returns the maximum number of flags that can be set on the peaks of the array. For example, given the array above the function should return 3, as explained above. Obviously my assumption is that the beginning or end of an Array can be a peak, is this not the case?
