• Inject Html Into a View Programmatically

  Hi, I have a tricky problem and I'm not sure where in the view rendering process to attempt this. I am building a simple blog/CMS in MVC and I would like to inject a some html (preferably a partial view) into the page if the user is logged in as an admin (and therefore has edit privileges). I obviously could add render partials to master pages etc. But in my system master pages/views are the "templates" of the CMS and therefore should not contain CMS specific <% % markup. I would like to hook in to some part of the rendering process and inject the html myself. Does anyone have any idea how to do this in MVC? Where would be the best point, ViewPage, ViewEngine?   Hi, I'm trying to solve the problem: when a user is being logged into a WebSite (via user control .ascx stored on the Master Page), it's name is being stored in a Page.User.Identity.Name property. OK, but how to retrieve that user name in the controller ? Is it possible without registering System.Security.Principal namespace in the controller ? In the other words - the controller must know whose user wants to do some action (e.g. change account data). I could store it's name in the Html.Hidden control on each View but I don't want to have a mess in my Views

• Strategy in storing ad-hoc numbers/constants?

  I have a need to store a number of ad-hoc figures and constants for calculation. These numbers change periodically but they are different type of values. One might be a balance, a money amount, another might be an interest rate, and yet another might be a ratio of some kind. These numbers are then used in a calculation that involve other more structured figures. I'm not certain what the best way to store these in a relational DB is - that's the choice of storage for the app. One way, I've done before, is to create a very generic table that stores the values as text. I might store the data type along with it but the consumer knows what type it is so, in situations I didn't even need to store the data type. This kind of works fine but I am not very fond of the solution. Should I break down each of the numbers into specific categories and create tables that way? For example, create Rates table, and Balances table, etc.?

• Google Maps or Open Street or Something Else

  I have been working on a concept for a while for a sports related website where users can record a location on a map and put that location into a category for a sport and then rate it by a metric or two. I want these metrics displayed on the map but then I want a link or button to view a full page description. I know that this is possible with Google Maps but I don't know a lot about Open Street Maps or other options. I am expecting around 50,000 views a day and am curious as to what the best option would be.

• Google analytics-style custom report builder UI

  I'm looking for a reporting engine/UI that can be integrated into a product, which has a UI along the lines of Google Analytics' Custom Reports builder. Is anyone aware of such a thing? The data is in our case is not page views/visitors/etc, but is similar in nature, in that there are limited entities or types of data, but each entity has many attributes/columns and many different ways of aggregating data (or in GA-style speak, metrics and dimensions). The analytics-style UI is very intuitive and allows many reports to be created in powerful ways, without having to know SQL. I have preference for a web-based tool (seeing that it is 2010 and this is a web app -- I mention only because it seems the vast majority of reporting tools still have only a non-web-based creation tool).

I have also base class for data managers BaseDataManager<T> : IDataManager<T> where T : EntityObject, IDataObject .... And i have particular classes public class Result : EntityObject, IDataObject .... public class ResultDataManager : BaseDataManager<Result> ... I want to implement service locator, which will return instance of IDataManager<T> for T But I stucked how to implement it in a neat way without a lot of castings. Any ideas?

  We initially didn't use any logging or debug tracing but after spending few weeks to trace down some data corruption we decided to put required Debug.Write and Trace for production and Debug.Assert So now question is What is the best practice to use debug and trace logging. • Can a single solution hold projects from multiple repositories?

  I've begun setting up SVN repositories to store my code, and am wondering if a single Visual Studio solution can have projects from multiple repositories. I have a shared library with different helper functions, generic custom controls, etc, that are used by multiple projects, and hosted in its own repository. Then I have my project repository, which contains all of the program-specific code such as forms, etc. I know I could copy the shared library into the program's repository, then copy them back when I make changes, but I'd much rather keep them in different repositories so I can hit "Commit" and the general library commits to it's repository, and the program code commits to it. I'm currently using AnkhSVN, but if it's possible with other tools, I'll look into it. Preemptive clarification for all the "just use one repository" answers: The shared library is hosted in an online repository, viewable by anyone, but the program code is proprietary and resides on our office servers, so they need different repositories.

• Cross-platform configuration, options, settings, preferences, defaults

  I'm interested in peoples' views on how best to store preferences and default settings in cross-platform applications. I primarily work in Perl on *nix and Windows but I'm also interested in the bigger picture. In the *nix world "dotfiles" (and directories) are very common with system-wide or application default settings generally residing in one path and user-specific settings in the home directory. Such files and dirs begin with a dot "." and are hidden by default from directory listings. Windows has the registry which also has paths for defaults and per-user overrides. Certain cross-platforms do it their own way, Firefox uses JavaScript preference files. Should a cross-platform app use one system across platforms or say dotfiles on *nix and registry on Windows? Does your favourite programming language have a library or module for accessing them in a standard way? Is there an emerging best practice or does everybody roll their own?

• Good tool to test WCF service (not SOAP/HTTP webservice)

  I recently found SOAPUI and discovered that it is just a great tool for testing any SOAP/HTTP service. Conventionally, we have been developing our own driver to test our services (WCF based netTCP binding) so far. But with SOAPUI experience, I am really looking for some such tool that can be used with such ease with built-in facilities for load testing, functional testing etc. The other thought in my mind is that for services that I wish to deploy with netTCP can be first tested using a HTTP binding using SOAPUI. Once found suitable, the binding can be changed for the intended one. I shall like the views from all the experts here. Thanks.

• Does Adorner breaks MVVM?

• Visual Studio 2005 - VC++ compiler C1001 on Windows 7

  When I try to build a simple "Hello World" C++ app on Windows 7 Beta, using Visual Studio 2005 (VC++2005) I get a rather generic error C1001 error (Internal compiler error) The compiler seems to just crash, and Windows pops up its (un)helpful This program has stopped working dialog. The file it complains about is mcp1.cpp. Has anyone come across this before? Cheers, Fritz EDIT: The code is: #include <iostream> int main(int argc, char** argv) { std::cout << "Hello!"; return 0; } EDIT 2: I have installed SP1 as well as SP1 for Vista. • How to get a reference to a method's caller object from within the method in Objective-C

  Hi guys. I have a few text fields and text views on my application's view. The keyboard comes up when I click in anyone of them. I have a method that gets called when any one of these objects is tapped in. However, I would like the method to execute its code only if the a certain Text Field(s) or a certain Text View(s) is tapped in. I would therefore like to have something like this in the method body: { if(currentField != mySpecialField) {return;} //Rest of the method code... } Now, my question is, how do I get a reference to the currently tapped in field so that I can perform the if-check. • Determine if on product page programmatically in Magento

  I want to insert tracking codes on all of the pages of a Magento site, and need to use a different syntax if the page is a CMS page, a category browsing page, or a product view page. I have a custom module set up with a block that inserts a generic tracking code on each page for now. From within the block, how can I distinguish between CMS pages, category pages, and product pages? I started with: Mage::app()->getRequest(); I can see that Mage::app()->getRequest()->getParam('id'); returns the product or category ID on product and category pages, but doesn't distinguish between those page types. Mage::app()->getRequest()->getRouteName(); return "cms" for CMS pages, but returns "catalog" for both category browsing and product view pages, so I can't use that to tell category and product pages apart. Is there some indicator in the request I can use safely? Or is there a better way to accomplish my goal of different tracking codes for different page types?

• How do I prove to a client/advertiser that my site's analytics numbers are what I say they are?

  I have been asked to provide recommendations on "Verified Analytics" for the next iteration of my company's site. Verified to mean that when we sell ad space, it's based on a number of page-views, and the people who buy that space want a way to verify that the numbers we give them are the actual numbers we're delivering. I have turned to The Google and the only services I can find for this sort of thing revolve around Google Analytics and the sale of a domain name. I export my analytics numbers to a PDF, have Google email the PDF to my auctioneer, and they look for signs of tampering. If no signs of tampering are found they put a little "Verified" badge on the domain auction. (Here) Other than this, and something similar on another domain sales site, I haven't found anything like what I've been asked to find. Currently we are using Google Analytics, however I've been also asked to recommend a replacement for that based on the ability to be verified. I'd rather just stick with Google Analytics since we also use Google for advertising.

  Hi Everyone I would really like to create a view. I know you can't use temp tables in MSSQL2005 views. Without rewriting the sql, is there anything obvious I've missed? Backup plan is to use a stored proc. • Cocoa: how to implement a custom NSView with an editable text area?

  What's the minimum implementation needed to make a custom NSView with an editable text area? I assume NSTextFieldCell can be used for this. I've succeeded in drawing the cell in the view (which is straightforward), but making it editable seems to require a more complicated coordination between the view and the cell. Is there sample code available somewhere? Update. I should have made clear that my longer-term goal is to have many more editable text areas on the same view. AFAIU it is better to use cells in that case as they are more light-weight than full-blown views. My updated question is: What's the minimum implementation needed to make a custom NSView with an editable text area using an appropriate NSCell?

• require_owner code to limit controller actions not recognizing current user as owner

  I am trying to restrict access to certain actions using a before_filter which seems easy enough. Somehow the ApplicationController is not recognizing that the current_user is the owner of the user edit action. When I take the filter off the controller correctly routes the current_user to their edit view information. Here is the code. • How to add reference an assembly that is not in the GAC from a t4mvc template (.tt)

  I have found the place near the very top in a T4MVC template file (.tt) where assembly references can be added, which looks like: <#@ assembly name="System.Core" #> <#@ import namespace="System.Collections.Generic" #> However, it seems that I can only reference assemblies that are in the GAC. i.e. if I have an assembly MyProject.Stuff.dll (not in the GAC) added as a reference to the VS project containing the template then I expected to be able to add something like the following: <#@ assembly name="MyProject.Stuff" #> <#@ import namespace="MyProject.Stuff" #> If I do this then I get the following error: Error 1 Compiling transformation: Metadata file 'MyProject.Stuff' could not be found C:\Work\Development\DotNetSolution\MyProject\Utils\T4MVC\T4MVC.tt 1 1 How can I add a reference to an assembly that isn't in the GAC?

• map view inside table view cell

  Hello, i have another (probably unanswered) question about map views. I have a map view inside a table view cell and i want to disable the table view scrolling if the scrolling begins in the map view. Also the zooming gesture does not function normally. It only functions if the zooming gesture is done horizontally on the iphone display. The same thing happens with swiping gestures. It only affects the map if i swipe the map area horizontally. If i swipe vertically the table view scrolls instead, and i want to disable that. Any ides how to do it?
